You know, I work in a bookstore, and one day I came across a book cover that horrified me. It was a book called Fortress of Grey Ice. For the longest time, I could not for the life of me understand how a professional artist could put together such a poorly done cover. One of the foreground figures had this bow drawn back ready to fire, but wasn't even looking in the direction of the background monster. I figured this guy was just a hack, he got some model to pose for him, and slavishly painted her in the exact same pose without any regard for how the final image would turn out.
So today, I'm flipping through Spectrum 10, and there, on page 65, is that same cover. And I'm like, "What? They put this in? They musta needed some filler or something." So I look at who the artist is and it says some guy named J.P. Targete. "Hmmm, that couldn't be the Targete from CA.org, could it? That guy knows how to draw, he's not some amateur." Lo and behold, it was indeed. So now I'm racking my brain : "Did he just slip up? Some kinda rush job?" And then a light-bulb went on in my under-educated mind. "Could it have been a compositional thing?" My only experience with composition theory was one class period in my Drawing I class at the local community college, plus Marko's tutorial a month or so ago. So I went back and looked at it, and whaddayaknow, the two foreground figures seem to be drawing the eye to the big bad monster in the middle. And since it's a book cover, you want something that says "Look at me! Buy me!". So then I say to myself, "Damn, I still got a lot to learn."
So, Targete, I would like to formally apologize for doubting your artistic abilities.
Moral, kids? Composition is important.
Second moral? If you're a student in a community college art class, and someone else is being paid to paint the cover of books that appear across the country (not to mention having his stuff put in a couple editions of Spectrum), he might know a little more than you.:bash:

Fantasydelicatessz
Targete, this is so IN YOUR FACE
That flying creature that has a moon
behind is so fantasy romantic, i can
imagine a story behind this drawing
Your drawings are very Narrative, yes
thats the word NARRATIVE and they
all sing big mythology epic stories
You have talent to FINISH this drawings
even that "man with joker hat" that isnt
finished has great finished lines
That 6th drawing of .. that guardian black
thing with horns, i dig that character design,
to be able to see a proffesional sketchbook
and to read some comments of the artists
is a gift that only CA could give me
Thanks for posting Targete, please bring
this treasure chest to Austin Gathering
the court will surelly be amazed by such
craftsmanship and beauty

Thanks for the comments as always everyone.
SeraphSword,
Thanks for being honest and hey artist are human and to be human is to be imperfect at times, we all have good and bad stuff, its the not so good stuff we can learn from.
My advice to aspiring illustrators: it aint easy! expect the worse and hope for the best, its okay if others doubt your skills as long as you dont you will be fine!
gaboartpage,
You are to kind my friend, and I will bring some goodies to Austin I hope I can get to see some sketchbooks from everyone.
Here are a few more, and below is a little tip on what helps me to do sketches when I'm out of ideas.
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxI.jpg
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxe.jpg
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxd.jpg
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxg.jpg
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxK.jpg
Sketch tips:
Every once in awhile I run out of fresh ideas and find myself in a corner so I decided to use these words to help with my sketching.
POWER
MOVEMENT
EMOTION
SOPHISTICATION
The sketchbook page was created quickly using those ideas as a start.
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/SKETCHXXXxN.jpg
POWER,
To exude power in your characters you can do a few things, you can show it in a pose or stance or muscle strain/definition and even in weight or bulk.
MOVEMENT,
Movement adds to the reality, you can quickly establish movement with gestures, try running in place or throwing a punch just dont injure yourself or someone near.:)
EMOTION,
Emotion is connected to power and movement both can be the result of emotion expressed by a characters emotions, anger, sadness and happiness etc. Throwing a punch and having an angry look on your face is a good example of emotion :).
SOPHISTICATION,
Sophistication doesnt mean detail or useless accessories. A good example of sophistication is a really well drawn face with a great expression, and interesting lighting/rendering. A bad example of Sophistication would be a weak drawn face covered with tattooes to hide the immaturity of the artist.
Hope that helps someone,
I leave ya with one more and a preview,

ahahahaha. well that's pretty plain english. Great works, thanks for sharing the tips. I always find I have great ideas, then get the blank page in front of me and I drop a load in my drawers. My mind goes blank....I'll try and keep those words in mind to inspire me to something moving next time I'm sketching (tomorrow). Thanks!

Much praise from me!!.. I wanted also to ask about your process for a few pieces
ALIENHUNTERxx, what paints/inks did you use.. plus your process?. What gsm/thickness is the paper and do you get any warping with it?.
The split panel piece with black bordering.. dig that bottom right char.. is that ink wash for the blacks??.
Super amazing cool dragon re the last image! How big + process?.

Thanks for the comments all, I'm glad you find my tips helpful, sketching is basically the key to creating beautiful and masterful finishes, when a finish looks off its usually due to the artist not spending enough time on his prelims/sketches, thats happened to me a few times.
Mike,
I try to keep those words in mind if I'm stuck and that happens some times when I'm sketching for myself. See if you can find that old teacher of yours on the net would love to see his work.
Fipse,
nice to have you drop in my friend, yhea to bad you cant make it to austin that would have been great to meet you, but hopefully we will have another chance.
Lukias,
My man! thanks for dropping by and the kind words partner. To answer your question the process for the big alien dude is Elcoro's famous marker ink technique, you can check it out here..
Elcoro's bad ass technique (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=566)
The drawing of the guy in the lower right of that split piece was done with a piece of black conti crayon or charcol I'm not sure..no ink though.
The dragon was a regular pencil drawing on tinted paper I touched it up with watercolor opaque white paint. The colored version is digital. Ill post as soon as I get the okay from the publisher.
Okay ready for a few more images? and some more of my home grown sketch tips?:D
Okay lets roll.
A good way to get yourself to get out of the same routine of sketching the same old way is to draw bigger, the page below was created on an 18x24 inch news print pad using a pencil and Ink and brush. Drawing big will do two main things for you.
1st you will draw with more of the motion of your arm and hand rather then your hand and fingers, your strokes will be bolder and more accurate.
2nd, You will be so in awe of the size that it will force you to put detail aside and focus on your basic drawing..step back and enjoy the view, don't noodle.
18x24
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/CRUSHHEAD.JPG
Back to my previous tip,
Draw with POWER! explore MOTION! express EMOTION! strive for SOPHISTICATION...
http://targeteart.com/JPshit/DOGBOYEE.JPG
Last tip before Austin, *draw without erasing,* try to just draw continuous lines. Okay the first time you do it your drawing may look like crappola but handicapping yourself by cutting your eraser supply will force you to develop your other skills and perception. You will judge distances and positions of shapes from one another you will think about your anatomy much more and how to translate your structure better and quicker. Dont be afraid to screw up thats the whole point, but when you do a decent figure you will be very proud.
Below is an example of no erasing, some figures are better then others. Sorry for the dark scan.

Okay here are some sketches I did while visiting with the Wife's family, my Plane got held up in Dallas for about 4 hours so I had alot of time to render my azz off.
Anyway aside from the portrait of the kid, my nephew done from life, the rest comes from my noggin.. YES THE INSANITY BEGINS!!!!!.
The first and last one is Dedicated to all of you on the sketchbooks threads who are brave and sick enough to show us whats on your mind, the one thing no one can take away from you is your imagination, thank you so much for igniting my imagination again.

Just some quick digitals and a few sketches, the first is titled the "The Teddy Bear diciples" as some of you know who attended the workshop a hero was born in the dreaded heat and creativity that was the Austin CA workshop, he had a teddy bear strapped to his back and hell in his eyes.

woosh..what a great series of updates recently! I really like how I can see the elements of the el coro technique but I don't know that I would have guessed it if you hadn't said so, you're using it your way. How much did you clean it up after you scanned it in (I think I see digital eraser marks on Rusty's side of the page)?
I think you're pushing into new areas, the goth fairy, the demon with the glowing halberd and the WotC book cover look a little different from your usual stuff, but in a good way! The colors and loose lines on that demon summoning scene are awesome! (but what does that warrior think he's going to do with that sword irritate that demon-god into submission?).

Thanks so much for the kind and supportative words. Man I'm very flattered that you put my dragons as wallpaper..little stuff like that makes me feel all mushy inside :). I have great respect for your work , and if I can be as consistant as you are with your critters I'd be a happy man.
HA ha I'm not that young, I've goofed around far to long with my skills, time to do something with it.
davi-
Dude you rock man! I've been impressed with your creatures lately, keep it up man!
bwkeough-
Thanks for those comments man. To answer your question I dont think I used the digital eraser..to clean up the edges I used white Gouache paint. I turned up the levels in photoshop to fade the marks in the white areas.
I'm trying new aproaches but its what I'm not doing that seems to do the trick, I'm not over doing the painting in some areas, just leaving areas rough and tightening others. Yhea that warrior is trying to play dart with the demon..dumb ass he will definately get fried.
guggenmaneuver-
Gee man thanks a bunch, those are very kind words. I really like creating stuff thats fun to look at rather then a book cover though those can be cool too, but stuff that is on my sub-conscious always excites me more to draw or paint.
I honestly feel an artist has to be true to him or her self and to break boundaries. If you look at some of my stuff you might see influences from other artist but I always try to break from that and put myself into it, even if I fail and make a crappy image, thats a part of being an artist. Be honest do your own thing, and ofcourse have a blast doing it.
ps..THAT BOTTLE OF INK sounds good
