Thanks for dropping in on my sketchbook! Go to last page for latest work.

Thought I'd start up one of these as well! I'll start off with some work I did a while ago, and finish off where I'm at now, more or less. I've gotten so much help from people on the forum 'til now, so big up to all of you! It's been great so far, and the only way is up, right? :D

A few of these will probably be double posts, if that is frowned upon, let me know, and I'll kill those pictures that are.

On with the show:

Starting out is a couple of old sketches/paintings (not that old, but I forget to date my shit, so I'm not sure how old.)

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Old%20Junk/Tiger.jpg

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Old%20Junk/Face.jpg

Old sketches...

Here are a couple more, these were made between the tiger and the face somwhere in time. The red/blue face was my first attempt at airbrush. It was a fun piece to do! I used a ref, as far as I recall. The alien-dude was made while we were playing an RPG called Alternity, so he's supposed to be my character. The color on his staff was done in watercolors after the RPG session.

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Old%20Junk/AlienDruid.jpg

I'm not going to bomb you guys with loads of my old material, so the above is so you get an idea of where I was at when I first started getting seriously into drawing and painting.

Following is more recent stuff. Placed in as chronological order as I can remember :)

A friend of mine. Made this a bit before easter.

Same dude, made this during easter holidays.

This is a section of a sketchpad-page. Also during easter holidays.

I've done stuff in between as well, but below is a couple of ones I made lately.

Update june 6.

All of these were made with a graphite pencil.

Some generic dude...

real quick self portrait... I like the one I did in charcoal better, but here it is. Gotta have some f***-ups to.

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/SP6.jpg

I messed around with this one in painter a bit. The colored version is in the "Guest self portrait"-section.

Any pointers/crits/comments are more than welcome!

As Buzzz said you´re on the right way - your stuff is showing good potential. One thing I realized you should work on is your confidence of lines - you´re quite often scribbling in short strokes that "feather up" the picture and make it seem "nervous". Try a bit working fast with strong lines - maybe with a pen instead of pencils.

I know what I´m taliking about, I´m suffering from the same problems :D.

Hope this could help a bit and you could understand my english.

dCepT

Fipse: Thanks man! Always nice to get encouraging words! Concerning the lines, yeah... I know! :) I'll try to clean it up and use stronger lines. I have a tendency to end up with a fuzzy image.

More to come soon!

Yes, indeed. Bags of potential here. I've written the same advice on my previous post, but I think it applies here too. Settle on a single lightsource, perhaps from the top left and stick to it. The orc with the earing is an example of where you need to apply this rule. Both sides of his nose are in shadow.

dCepT
June 14th, 2004, 06:34 PM
Summer Pudding: Thanks, man! I'll keep it in mind, what with the lightsources and all!

Here's a new batch. One from my head... a cave troll with lots of cocoons with more cavetrolls in them.

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Cave.jpg

One from ref. I'm from Norway, and this is out largest feline animal; a lynx

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Lynx.jpg

and finally one from life.. it's an old ink-pot from my great grandfather. It turned out kinda twisted I think. I'm going to have to focus more on life drawings...

I almost forgot! I didn't post for a couple of days, because I was on a trip with my day job (shudder) and I forgot my sketchbook at home (shame on me), but I found an envelope and a pen, so I got in a few real quick sketches... damn people on the docks couldn't stand still, dammit! :D

Very good that you're doing work from life also.
Moving people are very hard but the exercise is very good.
I Like the lynx, maybe you can experiment with different pencils (hard soft), that way you get a more complete valuerange (I'm missing some very dark tones)

nice stuff !!
one thing tho, might be the scans but dont be afraid to go dark in the darkest places in your pencils sketches, or use a pen with a highr softness, like 4b or 2b, i like that one, cus you can go light and dark with the same pen.

dont stop drawing, post more !

dCepT
June 16th, 2004, 04:00 PM
hurricane: Thanks man! I've got a problem when it comes to contrast, I think... like with the lynx. It was just flat until I pushed the deeper tones more. The scanner also steals a bit of the values, I think. Anyways, thanks for the crits! I'll be posting more soon!

I've been too busy with everything else this weekend, so shame on me, I haven't been drawing as much as I would've wanted to. But there has been coming a few things down on my sketchpad. Also I've gotten myself some oils and I'm now making a self-portrait in oils. Oils ROCK when compared to acrylics, damnit!

Here are the few sketches I scanned. Not much, but hey..

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Anatomy4.jpg

Here's the oil-SP... I'm into the second layer now. I'll be posting updates as I go along. I've never tried oils before, so this is a brand new experience! :D

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/2dpics/SpOil.jpg

Oh yeah..sorry about the glare...the oil is wet some places.

And finally, something I made in Painter.

I'm experimenting a lot with oils these days. Haven't been updating daily, so I guess I've been in sort of a slump.. I was over at a friends house yesterday for some bbq. I started sketching a bit there (at least I had my sketchbook with me, right? ;) ) This is what came out of it... no ref. on any of these. The guy with the sunglasses is the result of my girlfriend getting her hands on my sketchbook.. hehe

http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/Noodling.jpg

This is a WIP of an oil piece I'm working on... Lot of experimenting going on there. Still getting used to the medium.

Anyone have any good tips on how to photograph paintings without getting that infernal glare? I usually borrow a canon EOS300D to take the pictures...

And by the way; I've been looking at some of the stuff that has been coming back from austin... and I'm mad jealous of you guys that were there! ;) I'll be there wherever the next workshop is!

Yep that's hard to photograph I guess.
The best thing I think is to use daylight as much as possible, indirect because in the sun you also get that glare.

The damn camera had no batteries! Anyhow...here's the udpate.. and a WIP I'm doing in painter... any crits/tips/flames you guys feel like throwing my way on the digital piece is most welcome! She's still too bright, even though I'm planning on lightening the sky a bit.

BTW: photographing the oil-painting is a bitch! This picture turned out all red... I even used the manual white balance to get the colors as true as I could... guess I'm gonna have to try some different lighting.

I've been in sort of a slump, and I've been too busy lately to get in as much drawing/painting time as I would've liked. Just the way it is some times, I guess. Anyhow, I'm back fo' real now, and I'll be posting (hopefully) a whole bunch of stuff soon.

This is a couple of attempts at dynamic poses, which I need to get better at. No ref used. Tried to stay loose.

Good work on the Rembrandt study.
The oil, I like the colours on that one actually, it's maybe not how you painted it, but I like it.
On your Painter_WIP I would suggest that you paint in some cast-shadows, for instance underneath the arms onto the leg.
Also, it's not clear immediately that she sitting on a ledge, maybe you should push back the area underneath her feet (the background, not the part she is sitting on) by making it darker.

Cheers!

Van: Thanks for checking in on me! And yeah, the slump has passed! I just haven't updated here a lot.

I've bought a new gfx-card, and I'm running dual screen now, and MAN is it sweet!

The image is a bit off on the colors, as usual... I can't seem to figure out what to do to get the colors correct... I even got my photographer buddy to take this picture... It's kinda blurred out to, 'cause I had to hold it at an angle, and obviously I couldn't hold it still :) Anyways... I'll get a proper one taken when I'm completely done with the image! Yeah... rant done now...

What up man, looking good so far.. keep pushing. I did a quick paintover over of the immortal WIP. I'm not sure if you are going for the girl being a light emitting kind of ethereal feel or not, if you are then just ignore what I'm about to say. I think that it would help if there was a greater amount of difference between light and shadow on the girl. You've got it going on in the ledge she is sitting on but its not really happening on her. The pose is good, definitely captures her mood really well. The dress and her skin seem to have the same local value too, if you desaturate the pic, you'll see what I'm saying. Can't really crit the colors as I dont know jack about color. Hope this helps some.

If you're chicken, a good way to experiment (in Photoshop) is to duplicate the layer, bump up the contrast on the new layer (or whatever you want to do to the image) and then paint in the layer-mask to bring back the layer underneath by painting with black.

I'm baaack.

I've been inactive for too long now, but I've been busy with art-stuff, so I guess that makes it a bit more ok ;) I've made some stuff for a music video. I've made three 1.5 by 3 metres banners that were to hang behind the band, based on the brown, monochrome sketches I've posted here. I'll post pictures of the finished works if/when I get permission from the director.

Here are some sketches that I've made between then and now

I'll start off with some gesture/croquis stuff I did on set for the music video. It was hard to get down the pose in the few moments the actress sat still.. Good practice!

Hey man, good to see you updating again. Hope you're allowed to take a picture of the banners.
Good work on the gestures and that last portrait from ref. The eyes are really alive in that last one.

OK, switching to EVIL mode >:D
This one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/3_9_04_6.jpg) has some issues but I'm sure you know.
As you also know I'm not the expert on human anatomy (at least not yet :dad: ) but his right arm is too straight and rather short/small. His head is also too big.
[END of EVIL mode]

Maybe you can try to use more distinct lines, most of you drawings have very sketchy outlines, first create good lines and then try to shade them, it will make your drawings look cleaner I think.

Good work.

Thanks for the heads up, buzzz! I know the guy with the sword has some serious issues :) I think the expression on his face was kinda cool, so I'll redraw him...maybe make a painting out of it. I'll try to update more often from now on.. I'm getting used to the workload I'm putting on myself now (day job which suck, but I gotta get some money, right? ;) and I'm applying for art-related jobs wherever I find them, and wherever I think I have a shot in hell at getting 'em) and still I find time to sketch and paint for personal stuff/practice.. hehe. I'm looking forward to the day I can work solely with art. *stares dreamily into the future*.

keep going at it man...your work is improving steadily. keep up on your anatomy and porportions...your lineweight could use some work going from thick to thin but it comes with time. dont feel you have to rush a drawing...jetpack took his sweet time on his t dome piece and it was more amazing than anything of his i have ever seen. it was lightyears ahead of what he was doing before...just some things to keep in mind

Crunch: Thanks, man! I'll try to focus more on lineweight. Always cool to get constructive crits :)

Here is a page I did to loosen up my hand. It's an A2 page, so I had to take a photograph of it. Didn't get the whitebalance right, so it's very red, and it's damn blurry. Anyways...it's an update, right? Hehe.

'Sup ya'll

I've posted this in the WIP-section as well, I've started painting it in oils, so I thought I'd post the sketch in here.
To be noted: I was very inspired by both coro and Marko when I started this.

The oils from this sketch (just started out, I'll be updating regularily) can be seen here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29930

I'll be uploading some sketchbook stuff tonight.

See ya.

nice show of progression in the whole thread, you learn from piece to piece which is a good sign. i would recommend picking up few books on animation character creation as well as anatomy reference, the construction blocks of animation characters such as say Warner brothers subjects give a good sense of pose and proportion and muscle squash and stretch and would help you a great deal.

defcombeta: Thanks for the kind words and the tip. I'll check out some animation books in the very near future :) Hasn't really occured to me at all, but that is a great source for dynamic poses and such.

Now for the update. Just some random stuff I've been doodling...mainly on the bus to and from training.

Actually this first one is made where I work out. Just a couple of poses while I was watching another group go through a kata.

Here's a little something I made while dodging work. I realized after I finished it that it's a little hard to read. It's supposed to be a bull crashing down on a bullfighter. I think it would've been easier to read if I showed more of the bulls head, rather than just the horn.

looks great d-cept!!

but i have a crit/tip... buy a pensharpener and after you finnish the sketches so they look like they are in present status, go over some places with a sharp tip and add details, add details where you want the viewer to focus on (a good way to attract attention in a piece)... right now they looks good, but they have this "fuzzy" feel to it.

rock on, and keep on posting !

Nice studies dude. You're doing some good construction work on head etc. Try going for some harder values with the pencil/charcoal. It might just be the scan but try and find the lightest and darkest point in the picture and make that only a few select spots.

Steak-tron: Thanks for pointing it out. I need a kick in the ass every now and then.. :) It's part the scanner and part me not getting into my thick skull that I need to point out more contrast in my sketches. Hehe. If I can fix both, it would be nice! :D

dCept, a comment on your skull with the chrome chinspike..

I can't understand the colors you use for the chrome..

chrome reflects the surrounding color, the colors you used represent a desert (blue for the sky, light ocher for the ground). Your colors should be green and red/orange

For your style of pencil rendering i suggest you get a kneaded eraser so you can erase out your highlights

good job on the persian guy, although he could use some sharpness (that's what you can use the eraser for)

about your last painting, his robe could use some wrinkles

dCepT
October 18th, 2004, 05:24 PM
Jens: Thanks a bunch for the crits! The colors got a bit messed up when I took the photo of the chinspike skull. You're absolutely right about the light ochre, the blue is actually green, but I suppose I should paint it closer to the surrounding green.

I'm trying to get the highlights out, but I seem to still make fuzzy sketches, no matter how much people tell me I should clean up :P Gotta get a grip on myself there.
Thanks for the props on the persian dude! Always nice to hear!

About the last painting:
His robe is gonna get some wrinkles, promise! ;) I'm going to paint another version of it as well.

Hi D-Cept, long time no see.
There's a lot of improvement in your sketches, I like the orc on the buffalo and this portrait (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/18_10_04_2.jpg).
You should use more contrast though to make certain areas pop, and your shading and linestyle is still a bit messy. Think about your lines before you put them down, Be the line haha. Or first draw lightly and then darken the correct lines.
Try crosshatching as a shadingtechnique, look at Steak-tron's DSB for reference.
About the oilpainting, I like the blueish version better somehow.
Keep it up!

Love to see more attention to line quality and contrast in your pencil works::: I try to think in terms of 5 values
(1) Hightlight (USED VERY LITTLE)
(2) Light
(3) Midtone
(4) Dark
(5) Accent (ALSO USED VERY LITTLE)

It is important to get your darks (4) in very early in the drawing because this will dictate everything else you do.

Save your highlights and accents to the very end!

Do not swallow to much Hogarth (a little is O.K.) you will wake up round
Don't have to take my word for this ::: ask around!

There is some very helpful stuff in his books on feet and hands but leave it at that :::: if you want to copy some ones drawings pick an OM

Hi d-Cept, you're on a roll here.
Good structure on those latest faces and the creature is coming along nice.
Be careful to not lose the muscle-structure when coloring.
I see you're using Painter, or at least the impasto-type brushes look that way.
My suggestion would be to first try the digital watercolour on a separate layer to add the base colour, and then later flatten it and work up the colour using opaque brushes. That way, the structure of your pencils is better preserved.
Cheers mate!

Yo dude been awhile since I checked in, coming along nicely. For this last comp you wanted to add perspective, dont be afraid to use basic forms to do your problem solving with.. imo it beats spending a lot of time on details that arent necessary until you get the picture working. For the gestures at karate, dont worry about trying to define the forms at all, be more concerned with showing the movement, posture, weight of the body. Look for the line of symmetry running down the neck and into the waist, or from the back of the neck down the spine. The belts should give you a good indication as to how their hips are tilted. Try to see how the weight is distributed between the legs.. Do a bunch of em, real quickly. As you warm up it'll get easier to add some volume if you want to on top of the gestural movement.

Some_Guy: Thanks for dropping by, man! All the commens are much appreciated! I'll definately take that tip on the perspective on the latest comp.!

I was going through mentlers thread, and I decided that the "Three graces" stuff he was talking about had to be a good idea. I'll add more stuff to the next batch of these (like legs and such).

The sloppy color-thingy is just me messing about with color on the sketch with the little girl... I'll probably rework it with some more dramatization, though.. Digital watercolor.

Hey man no problem. That portrait looks good man even though you dont like it : ) Thats cool you're doing the tre grazies looks like a real good exercise. Couple things I spot on your figures - the feet should be about the length of your forearm, sounds real big at first, but put your foot up to your arm and check it out. Your figures seem like they are loosing a little bit of their bulk in the torso. Hmm.. trying to think of what it is, there should be more volume front to back in the rib cage I think. And remember the spine curves around the shape of the ribs. Thats all I got for now, keep at it man!

Some_Guy: Thanks a bunch! I'll be keeping that in mind for the next batch, especially the part about the bulk of the torso!

I'm going to study the muscles and insertion points of the muscles in the leg for the next one as well.. I'm really lacking there, which is why I avoid them, I guess..

Here's what I got for today.. Just two, but at least I'm doing 'em! ;)
Personally, I like the one with the arched back on the second page..

Hi d-Cept.
Small comment, I like the portrait, but I think the nose needs a bit of shading.
The tip of the nose is quite oily on humans and has a highlight most of the time.

About the torsos: most of your figures have very tiny waists, like their hips are squashed or something like that. Also, on most of them, it looks like you drew the person while sitting down on the floor and looking up at them.
Keep it up bro!

Hey man, there's some good things happening on the painting. A pretty good start. I like how you handled the reflection, the ground plane, and the background. Parts of the figure look pretty good, but it seems the torso and arms are too long in comparision to the legs.

Also if I can offer up some advice (and I've found this to be helpful on my own work lately), is that when working on non-referenced stuff (especially figures) I'll try to make it up as best I can with what I know, and then I'll come back and try to find refs in similar poses or use a mirror and try to duplicate a pose I've drawn, and then compare and see what mistakes I've made. I find I retain the information fairly well that way. I hope that helps. :)

its wonderful that u have so much energy to make all these drawings. I just have one thing to say tho about your pencil sketches, which u may or may not agree with. Try using (cross)hatching when your shading instead of smudging, i find it looks much cleaner that way.

Anyway, keep going, ur works looking good!

Yea, I agree with Admiral_Hahn here. Get rid of the smudegstick and try to take your time with a sharp hb/2b pencil instead...it might seem more tedious, but it pays off and your images will come off much cleaner.

the last one: the head looks completely flat. It seems to be scewed, like edited text in MS Word. It might help to draw a perspective box around it...doing several studies will help as well.

Keep up the hard work. I admire your motivation. You are doing well. :}

very cool d-CepTs. I like how you have a lot of emotion in them.

I suggest you stray away just a bit from the scratchy look and try to keep it crisp and clean and professional. Try to make your hatchings consistent with what your other hatchings are. This will create a good clean consistent professional look. Takes practice but I can see you're dedicated.

Keep it up.

Nice hand : good looking stuff starting to happen : would like to see you use line more and shade less : shading or shaping as I like to call it should only be used to define form : you seem to get lost with it sometimes like you are just filling in a shape : the style you are working is very soft : you need a few strong dark accents to add some spark to your works : all in all I see some major improvements without some of the resent work!

Like other people have said, try to be less messy with the lines and be more aware of the basic perspective, the big shapes. Your waists still look kind of thin to my taste, this one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/23_02_05_3.jpg) for instance.

Hi dCept,
Thanks for the advice on the cheekbones, I will look into that. Something was bothering me too but I didn't know what it was. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Ok, about your latest update. Good stuff.
You still can't seem to get away from the scratchy lines though :)
I don't know how big you are drawing but maybe you should try to work a bit bigger. Try to hold the pencil in the middle and try to draw with the whole arm, makes it easier to focus on the big shapes first.
Look at Justin Sweet's website (http://www.justinsweet.com) , he has some great line-only sketches on his site.

I like the ninja actually, think you could take it further.

Second picture:
Top person with pony-tail. The part below the nose (jaw) seems to bend inward to much. The wrinkles on the shoulder look a bit weird. Shouldn't the wrinkles start below the shoulder? The hand/sword part also looks a bit weird, like the hand is reversed. Needs a bit of cleanup maybe.
The face below that: I think the skull could be deeper and his ear is too narrow too. Good work on the eye-nose area.
The bottom drawing: Wow, great pose on the left guy. Shading is also a lot cleaner on this guy.
Finally the one to his right has a good pose, linequality is a bit woozy again :) and the skull needs more definition.

Good work man, looking forward to the oil-stuff!

Hey dcept

Good progress!

For figures, I would focus more on gesture and minimal use of lines. A lot of your drawings have a scratchy feeling, unsure lines that dont describe the form. Think of it, you only need so many lines to show the form, what do all the various other lines tell the viewer? Simplification is key!

Keep working at it. Work on proportions and structure, your work will improve dramatically!

Yeah, I find that after every semi-time consuming drawing you do is complete, scrutinize it, find everything about it that you could do better and take note for the future. You'll improve with each piece and find new issues to take care of with each one. Of course this is easier said than done, but I assure you if you keep at it it'll work.

March 12th, 2005, 07:59 PM
You got a nice progress

since it seems you're going to put more attention on lines, you may think of using line to define form (sense of 3d) even more by almost omitting the line in the highlights and making it heavier where the form is in shade/dark.

you've improved nicely since your first posts, especially in anatomy. keep the muscle studies up! You're also very creative with color.

It looks like proportions is your biggest weakness. You are consistenly cropping the top off of people's heads. remember that the eyes are halfway up the height of the head. Dont be afraid to give them foreheads. Just doing that will make your drawings look waaaaay better.

Having fun with your new Wacom eh?
Good to see you are having fun with Painter.
Maybe you can try working on a toned or coloured canvas instead of pure default white.
Painter lets you set the Canvas color which I find makes it a lot easier to set up the basic values.

Cheers!

tablets are fun... try working along some more specific lines if you're going to use a small brush, it'll look sharper. Otherwise, use a large one to put in the general areas.
And what happened to the mass studies you promised?
Watch for a huge update over the weekend.

Mike Frank
March 25th, 2005, 11:31 AM
Hey dude nice stuff lately. I see you've gained a lot better control on your lines. Just an exercise for you that you might like - try to draw some things from reference or imagination where you pick up the pencil as minimally as possible. Let it all flow out, if there is a form that you are drawing that is part of a larger form, just let the line flow over the surface to what you're trying to draw next ( for instance moving from the outside of the head into the eye ).

In your color stuff it seems like you are using a lot of different levels of saturation in the piece. This is probably because you are using white and black, when you add black or white to a color it brings down the saturation or chroma of the color. Ah, what do I know.. still too afraid to start tackling color til I can make some good compositions with value.. but check out this stuff of Ron Lemen's - http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=17837 , http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18610 . Heya :D
You've improved alot since your earlier posts (yup I dled most of them with my dialup). I see your doing good work with your tablet and it's good you don't lay off the pencil when working digital :)
I'm very bad at colours and that kinda stuff. I've just got a wacom temporary, have to return it to Calle_ soon :/ so I'm just gonna comment your pencil sketches. As for values, try to use very little shadings instead of making it all look very greyish. Pick out the darkest parts and make them very dark, then work your way to the lighter parts. You've gotten better at this but some of your earlier ones were all drawn in grey.
Hope to see some updates soon :)

The hand on that digital painting is really good.
As for where to go from there, humm, what's the character doing? Attacking? Who is he attacking? Running away? Who is he running away from? And where he's heading to? Perhaps you can figure out what to add on by answering the questions? And what city is that, modern, ancient, futuristic city? Oriental, western? Once you think about those, you might be able to get an idea of what features and details to add.

The last image in your pencil studies is really good. The facial features seem really accurate, the expression and the attitude of the character are carried out nicely. Although it could do better with more contrast and richer shadings on the skin. =)

Hey! New to your sketch group.

I can already see you're making a lot of progress. Like others said, just keep pushing those darks, get some higher contrast in there-- it'll make all the difference. Also, I'd drop the inch thick border you draw around some of your sketches (I use to do the same thing). I've been told by an illustration major at ringling that they hate that over there. In some cases you work it well, but overall instead of defining your images with a black border like that, develop a composition or background. I've seen you do it a couple of times, like the sketch with all of the heads composed together (which I think looks wonderful, and could look even better with darker values). What type of pencils are you using (hardness/brand)?

Look forward to seeing more!

Awesome shading in your newest posts, not to mention their shapes and aspects. Once again your creative mind and hands have done quite astounding work here.

The technology/scifi style implementation indeed looks awesome as well, those have always somehow tickled my fancies, but never have I actually spent any time trying to create such styles. But glad to see you have :D ! For they look really good.

The latest head-model has great shape too. Has a very realistic look!
Glad to see more and more of your work and I desire to see even more!!!
Keep it up, you are absolutely gifted!

- I updated some of my own gallery, so take a look if interested ;) . Profil: I try to keep an eye on them, but I slip every now and then. The guy on the monsters belly is a prime example of me not remembering my waists. Thanks for pickin' on me! I need it!

razuel: Most of the sketches lately have been made solely with a .5 mechanical pencil. I'm thinking about some more variation in tools, but that thing is so easy to bring with :) Thanks for the heads up on the outlines vs. backgrounds!

Malavon: Thanks man! Love to hear that my stuff tickles your imagination :)

panda: I'm gonna add some more detail 'n stuff for the next update on it, so I'll bump down on some of that smoothness :)

Now...I've been struggling with my damn scanner the last couple of days, and it just won't work.. or that is.. the software seem very unstable, and I can rarely get a scan going. That was the excuses for today :)
The sketches will come as soon as I sort out the scanner software.

Heh, I've been slacking the past two three days. I'll try my best to catch up.
The second shooting piece is a lot better, but I think you can dramatize the perspective even more, especially the leg part.
The last shooting piece's pose is a bit static, and doesn't quite feel the viberations from the machine gun. My thought is that his right arm is too much forward. According to the leaning pose, it seems the gun is giving a lot of back power to push the body back. But if you think of how human body works, instead of having the whole body fall back first, the arm will be pushed back before that, because the arm is not as stable as the whole body. And I'd imagine his body will be facing more toward the other way as the gun's back power push the arm back, along with the shoulder, thus rotate the body face the other way.
Anyway, I'm really no expert with guns and powers, but you can try a sketch with the differen pose to see which one look better. Or better yet, hold a stick and ask a friend to push on that stick. ;)

again, same crit as last time. very posed.
Next time, when you draw out your anatomy, don't just think about where the muscles are supposed to go, but also how they stretch.
I dunno, maybe that'll help. teehee!
I need to draw more.

Fipse: Thanks! Nice to hear I'm moving in the right direction!

panda: Yeah, I guess I need to focus even more on how the muscles work in action.

Mindflaw: Yeah, I guess... I haven't thought about it much, to be honest...I just go with it when I'm painting on it :)

Now.. My scanner suddenly decided to work again (WOHOOO!), so here's some paperwork. I'm gonna scan some more and throw 'em up soon!

Love the light in this one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/16_05_05.jpg) though the arms need some definition.
Good to see you're still using pencils too. Digital is fun, but the connection between your brain and the paper beats a wacom every time.

Well what the hell, I turn my back for a second and you got a whole new page FULL of awesome, nerve breaking stuff here!!
First of all, your body shapes looks grand, the shadings, expressions and motion has some real emotion in them, I got to love them!
And those hands make my eyes bleed for the sheer awe I feel looking at them, hahah!

I love the smooth shapes of about everything you draw and that forest scene is absolutely lovely. It has very nice feel to it.
Great faces, muscles, eyes, gestures, raaarghh, everything!!!
Keep it up, for you are just getting so much better that you are near some God-like transcendence, to say the least!
Awesome.

Like the middle tone background ~~~ love to see you work some sanguine into them ~~~ I think it give them another dimension ~~~ going to demo multi techniques in my summer workshops and this one appeals to me a lot!

Try the sanguine as just random stuff in the background and yet the picture work into it instead of filling in shapes!

I like that bunny and this one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/18_05_05_2.jpg). It's beautiful

I noticed that you tend to give lighting on the edge, especially for profile views, I think it's better to avoid lighting on the edge, it tends to flatten the object no matter how well you use the shading.

animeidiot
May 19th, 2005, 06:02 PM

I like the use of positive and negative space there on the last piece.
As for critique, the guy's legs are a tad short, especially if you think of the ground are going up as it goes farther back due to the perspective point of view. I like the placement of the two characters, although it'd be more interesting if the guy is pushed a little further back, it'd create more space and mysterious feeling to this.

Cool...second pic capoeira chick?

Ok just some quick thoughts might be useful about your latest WIP..I have no idea anyway if it's not just pm me...theres no need to take time writing unnecessary stuff :)

<> You might want to do the arm in background smaller if you don't want it to be a giant.... it looks to be the same size as the left figures arm (from tip of fingers to shoulder) and since it's in bg it's a lot bigger...
<> don't forget to adjust the cape to according to how the left figure is pulling it.
<> Left figures head imho is in a to neutral position. If the zombie is weak and stiff it might be better to pull the head even more back...have read that if you want to show movement it's best to either show the startpoint or the endpoint... If he's a lil bit stronger make him look where he is grabbing. I htink most people looks where to reach before they reach like if I take a glass of water I first check where it is.
<> About the lighting it might be more dramatic if you only use the glowing "ball" as light source and skip the halo around the head...I think the lightsource is close enough to the head to make the sharpest contrast between light and shade there and far away from other stuff to make the softer..so i think it would still be the center of attention.

keep going

At long last I got myself arsed here! Very cool, intriguing and great updates you got here! I love the pen&ink experimentations you tried, they turned out very well, I assure you. Especially the wolf at its prey is great work. And the rat-like fighter is very interesting and well done, they all are actually :D .
You just blow me away with you many ideas and turnouts. You got the skills and you sure know how to use them in many ways.
Great to see inks, colors and black&white used and done works. You have many great dimensions in which you rule supreme ;) . Your poses, faces(were they monstrous or human, matters not), and stances are all taking very good shape, truly you are improving alot. All the mechanical and and human aspects are truly intriguing. I just cannot even BEGIN to imagine what you will become in few years O_o . You ought to be something impressive, that you already are.
Fan the flames more and unleash your everything upon the paper, I crave for more!

It seems like a lot of your sketches are kind of flat. It could just be your scanner, but are you using one thickness lead? If you are, I recommend using a variety, I always keep a 2H and 2B hand-- it keeps my drawings flowing better and look more life like.

Lake

try making your outlines less dark and instead using shadows and lighting to make the contrast that differentiates the subject from the background.

and the boar's head is awesome.

Glad to see you got your scanner working again, or some way of scanning at least. :)

The drawings could use some more difference in shading and contrast, to make them pop more from the paper. Give it more of a 3D feeling. Good to see you drawing something that has finer lines and isn't as "rough" with the strokes as usual, like the face. :)

Like the colours on some of your latest digi work, you play good with them. :) You could get those pop more out from the image as well though, by adding more contrast colours in the right places.

Keep at it, lotsa improvement going on here! :)

Hi

don't have time to write something that might be useful, but I checked out your update in helpful... anyway try to think a little bit more about composition: Is it is exactly like you want it to be? does it fulfill your purpose with the drawing? your story? If yes then go on if not then work on that before anything else. you said you should post some pastels do it I like pastels and I'm going to draw more with pastels as a way to get into colour sketches and thinkning about colour probably also water colours but mostly pastels I hope you use soft pastels and not them oil pastels. So make sure to post them so I can see if I can steal something from your style :)

Great new updates here, DcepT !! The boar is fantastic and is great show that you have something else in store than just human poses ;) .

Also the WIP work is very good, like the colors in it. Though the girl's hand-shapes seem rather odd to me, is it because of the lightning or what, somehow the shape eludes me. But anyhow, it's great piece of work.

Also the bald man's nose and/or mouth seems a little bit off, as if they were not symmetrical to the human shape of head. But anyway, round and solid style of yours is absolutely awesome ;) .

The Phantom of the Opera work looks nice as well, hope to see it complete later on, it has a nice feel to it.

Keep it up, for I crave to see more of your work!!
