awesome. your sketching is getting a billion times better.
the red chick piece is awesome. however her face is just killing it. showing that much of her face is not only taking away from some of the mystery factor but it looks like she is leaning backward in a very uncomfy position. i would tilt it down some.

Those updates are rocking! I can't decide if I like the paintings or drawings the best! Very varied but remains competent! Only crit I can give is that the brown pool border in that Red Dress painting looks too much like a solid color shape. Perhaps it could use further light reflections and shadows (from the branches). Anyway, pic is already quite tough with the drapery and water. Wicked newborn concepts!

Sorknes: Thanks for the thoughts! Seems like the contrast thing along with my.. flimsy grip on color is a big issue (that is to say, I know it is.. ) will work harder on improving!
Eon: mmm you're totally right.. If that thing took some shadows from the surroundings I think it'd definately be an improvement.. I've already gotten some good crits from hp on it, so I'm reworking it anyhow.. I'll keep it in mind!

your painting is quite well done. I also enjoy your creatures ^_^
The only thing i have to say is that your faces need work. Usually when the faces are far away. Most of your closer faces look decent. I myself suck at faces from imagination so ya.
By faces i just mean the ones from imagination.

Hey d-cept, really nice sketchbook ya got goin here :) I really like the variety of ideas you've got going here, specifically the newborn ones and the sheet of birds from a couple of posts ago. This recent WIP has a really nice depth to it; you've seperated the fore, middle, and backgrounds quite nicely. Definitely progressing well though, curious as to where ya take it.. keep it up!

Your pencil stuff is really good and the Newborn WIP looks great. Just an idea: perhaps the Newborn could be paler--he hasn't seen the sun throughout his existence. That could also easily distinguish him from the dark background.
Have you seen "The Machinist" with Christian Bale? He lost 60+ pounds for the role, your Newborn reminds me of the character: http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/stickman.jpg

Ey!
The Newborn wip is looking great.
I like the colours your using here.
The blue and red is nice, and the green in the foreground adds just that little extra!
Good work. And the composition is tight, and there's a great feeling of depth as well.
Here's a couple of crits:
The depth of field going on in the foreground is a cool idea, but as it is now it doesn't work for me. The most subtly blurred insect legs are ok, but the blurred pipe seems kinda wrong. I doesn't feel like it's a part of the picture right now in my opinion. I don't really know how you should fix it. Perhaps make the blur less subtle, or study photos with DoF that you find on the internet perhaps, to get more of a feeling of what it looks like.
Also the anatomy of the guy who is new born is a bit generic.
I guess people who are "constructed" like this might get a generic kind of anatomy, but I think that if you made him really weak, or really strong, that would bring out more of a dramatic effect. You know.. Weak like in very thin and all ribs and such. Or strong with broader shoulders and more muscles. At the moment he looks pretty thin, but he's got muscle as well, so I'm not really sure what is going on.
This is last one is really more of a personal opinion than a real crit though. :)
Keep up the good work! Looking forward to see this one finished.

YihyoungLi: Hey! No.. haven't seen the film.. guess I'm gonna have to now! I heard that he was advised not to go so extreme by a doctor while filming that thing, though... haha.. Thanks for the suggestion on the Newborn :)
Spect: Thanks homie! Always in here.. hehe.. YOU RRROOOOCCCKKK
zelda_geek: Yep.. totally right.. I need to do more studies... I'll pick it up and post soon! Thanks for the crit on the Newborn piece!
Shin: Damn... you really sat down and thought this one through didn't you? Awesome crit man! Hope everything is good on your side of town :D Done with that summer gig yet? ;)
Ok.. So I got so many suggestions from people not only on here, that the grey scale was way more creepy, so I went for a monochromatic with a kicker for the final.. I'm gonna brush up some more on this thing at some point, but this is what I got in as a final for the competition.. Got a new gig as well I moving into a new apartment while doing this, so I was spread a little thin a while there.. haha..

i would have darkened the foreground even more on the left, and also right now since there is a equal amt of rendering between the two chars, my eye actually kind of goes thru them to the very background. i might add some glow or hazy smoke to the bug bot so that the guy has more focus.
great tho, good luck :D

Nice update! The samurai hairstyle is unusual, but the highlights are spot on.
The skintones could be a more consistent. In some areas, the shadows are dull; but there are also very saturated parts--like his forehead. He seems to have been out in the sun for too long. Also, it's not so apparent, but his head shape is strange; notice the area between the bottom of the ear and the black clothing. I believe he's missing some neck/hair over there.
The pose in the second is convincing and the expression is great--I wouldn't want to mess with him. The shadow is a good addition: it really plants him in the space. These are really minor details: The right forearm's shape could be more informative as it's rotation; it doesn't really connect with the hand well I think. Also, it's kinda difficult to tell the pant's texture.
Keep up the good work!
EDIT: 52 pages yeah!

YihyoungLi: Thank you for a really good set of crits! I'll definately have a look at 'em!
hp: Yeah.. I've been hearing about that ear.. hehe.. Rework comin' up! :D
Right.. so I did a couple of light/color/composition studies from movie stills this weekend.. trying to get outta what I usually do. Noted on 'em which movies they're from :) I tried to keep it very loose and not fall into my usual render-whoring.. I'll do more of these and try to strike a balance between loose and rendered somewhere.. we'll see where this ends up :) My definate favourite of these is the one after "From Hell".. Seems the implied detail is sorta working there.. The knife (yeah, the blob in the guy in the foreground's hand :P) could probably be better defined in order to get the point across a bit more.. as well as the chair she's sitting in sorta reads as her leg in between 'em there.. So I shoulda rendered some more there, perhaps..
Thoughts, crits and such are very welcome!

Ah thought I had this subscribed; was wondering why it wasn't popping up on my list... fixed either way! hehe great updates man, really strong work. I love this one (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=750142&d=1250082419), great pose and the technique works really well for it (love the Champ/Chimp thing as well hehe). These movie studies are looking really good as well, nice color and contrast as well as a very solid feel to each character.
Not a whole lot I can see to crit; the knife, as you mentioned, is a little wonky but I'm sure that'd be a pretty quick fix. Otherwise I'd say you might want to try to use a bigger brush to block in larger areas, reduce the amount of brush strokes you use a little. You did say these were meant to be looser though, so that might not be helpful in the end hehe... either way just keep it up!

Onir: Thanks! Yeah, I'm trying out some new ideas.. hehe.. But a bigger brush is probably good :) I tend to pick at stuff.. hehe..
So I tried a little zBrush today.. got a buddy who is a 3D modeller who's been bugging me about doing some zbrush.. haha.. I made a very rough model and painted on top of it.. Definately a different approach to character design.. Here's the result of my fumbling about today :D

Did another quick movie study last night.. from Interview with the Vampire. I've only used a "/" shaped brush with tilt sensitivity and opacity to pressure.. I'm thinking maybe I should bring a soft brush into the equation to get more control over the edges and the rendering. Just put down a few strokes with a soft brush at the end.. These studies are supposed to be fast, but they can be better while still being fast :D

Some cool stuff in here. The Heavy Attack Crab is seriously awesome... worth the admission fee alone. Also really liking how you are using Artrage, and your pencils are nice too. But where are the DS speedies you promised? ;) I linked here from the setup thread.
You seem to be pushing in all areas so I don't really know what to crit, although I did notice that some of your more finished pieces that feature figures loose a little definition. The different masses tend to become more generic and lumpy? The new zBrush paintover, on the other hand, retains the nice structure, so maybe doing a few more would help the memory retain?

Glad to see these great studies! The "From Hell" study is really nice. Overall, your colors and values are convincing, but some planes could be clearer. The shirt sleeve in the Benjamin Button screen is kinda vague; it's hard to tell what's going on there. I think more definitive brush marks could help out, or cell-shading to a certain degree.

hey, looks great! really got the expression, the pose, and the moistness! lol only crit I have is that the top of his head (his forehead area I guess) is flattening out a bit, I guess because of the hard edges along his temples. it is really tough since his hair is dark and it's on a dark background, but you definitely did a great job with it. keep at it!

Nice update. The color and lighting seem spot on--very convincing. I don't mean the sketch has to be more detailed, but the shapes of your brushstrokes could be more informative. The chest/pectoral area and the trapezius are vague/muddy; perhaps simplifying the shapes.

Onir: Thanks for the crits! Yeah, the hair/temples transition was a problem area for sure.. Maybe I should've worked it a bit more.. I kinda liked that the edge of the hair disappeared against the dark background.. maybe if I defined the hairline against his skin it would've read better?

from the last page judging i think you will get a lot from doing a really long study where you focus on planes and form only.. You're putting a dozen of suggestive brushstrokes even when using reference.. be more patient if you need too and try not to be satisfied with the first value/color that you pick from the colorpicker.. there are a billion colors in there so its unlikely that you'll get the right one at your first pick :p but yeah.. spend more times with your planes... you are 'supposed' to spend more time on your studies, so that when you make it from your head.. it comes naturally...!

Awesome update. I'm really surprised--those color studies really paid off because the three character portraits are great. Slash pointed out some issues in the second one; the color bones are wonky too it wouldn't hurt to use some references.
The lighting in the environment is great. Perhaps introducing some cooler colors into the shadows. Also, the perspective of the rocket is off right now; double check the where it connects to the ground and where the parts are connected (the three dark lines).
Keep it up!

i think the yellow structure is a bit too straight on. you need more references to scale too IMO, at the moment it's looking a bit miniature-esque. also i think you need to decide on a focal point (most likely the rocket) and darken other parts of the piece in relation so it stands out more. keep us posted! :D

Yea, the improvement since the beginning of this SB is huge, and I can clearly see that in your last updates. Keep 'em coming man! :)

i'd say leave the eyes,i mean, there are women like that...but the rest of the face (or particularly chin) does indeed look very male. the general's looking very good, could use abit finer details on the face though,to contrast with the rather loosely kept jacket (which works very nice in contrast).

Hey dCept! Sorry for not stopping in so much recently :\ that'll change though! Great looking characters, really nice rendering and personality in all of them. I'm with Carnifex honestly, I like the woman's eyes how they are; right now they seem to change and reflect a sterner, more imposing sorta person (not sure if that's what you were going for of course). The only thing I would change about her eyes are the directions of her pupils, they sorta making her look a little cock-eyed. Otherwise great job with them once again, nice gestures too!
Very cool environment, I really like the direction you are taking it. I'm really enjoying the detail you put in spots throughout the piece, the sepia tone and the overgrown vines on the buildings and train are a really nice touch. A crit I'd offer is that the train looks a bit big (at least in comparison to the building next to the rocket); might just be me though hehe. Either way keep workin it, looks good so far!

Tjena Norge!
Very juicy stuff, mate. Really digging the Portsmouth resident. If there's one comment I'd make on that one, it's that you could give his eye another once-over. It's such a focal point, but feels much sketchier and less well-defined than the areas around it.

Woah nice one! The hair really makes it creepier; makes it seem like some experiment on a human gone wrong.
Just some minor crits: the musculature on the back could be more defined, especially in connection to the armpit.
Great pose gesture and design!

Sorknes: Levelin' up yourself these days! Thanks for stoipping by!
Yeah.. been a while (lotta my posts start that way, I realize).. got some stuff I can't show yet, as usual.. some of the NDA stuff I can show in January though.. Lotta stuff goin' on! I've quit my job after much deliberation.. I'll be a freelancer come next year.. wish me luck, gang! ;) I really really needed some change in my situation, so I'm cuttin' loose! Hopefully I'll be a lot more active on here as well.. I feel a bit of the drive coming back, so I'm happy about that!
In other news, if any of you guys are in New York, there are three ink drawings hanging in a gallery New York that I've done! It's called climate/gallery and it's located at 37-24 24th street, Suite 406 on Long Island! I'm super stoked that some of my meager attempts at art have made it into a gallery across the pond! In my daze when I sent the things I totally forgot to scan them though... haha.. If they don't sell, I'll scan 'em when I get 'em back.. haha..
Ok.. nuff talk, more art.. just a few sketches in ink washes and markers.. I haven't paid close attention to anything else than having fun with most of these.. getting back into the joy of creating stuff again!

Good to see you posting again!
Nice and clear arrangement of values with the marker sketches, especially in the second and fourth ones. Double check the 3/4th profile for the first: more of the cheek needs to be shown on the right side of his face. Perhaps looking in the mirror to solve that.
Also, the samurai seems kind of stiff. Maybe pulling up his left shoulder to counteract his lower left hip.

I'll get some more digital stuff up on here soon! I'm still internet deprived at home.. Anyway.. I was watching the end of a Crimson Daggers session with Dave Rapoza, so I joined in.. he was doing a color study after a photo of an Indian dude.. I opted for an aborigine with face paint.. hehe.. so I'm posting both the photo I found online somewheres and my study.
I was focusing on the colors, and eyeballing them correctly (lotta back and forth.. haha), so the face is a little wonky..and the colors of course.. but I'll keep doing them and hope I get better at it! I often do like a greyscale version and then color it, but I wanna start doing colors directly.

wicked study man an i dont really know what im talk'n bout cuz i thought it up right know but the stretching skin on th shoulders might need a bit of attention to help balance the color composition aspect of study the color of the head shoulders an belly kinda create a diamond shape or tilted square that rotate the eye in a clock wise motion from ''red'' to i geauss ''light bronish'' to ''red an light brown shapes'' to ''dark brown'' back to red that shorta serve as a pedestal to show off the face ......haha i know thats not quite what yer study'n lol ill be quiet now haha stay good dc

Here's todays Crimson Daggers study! N.C. Wyeth this time.. spent a lot of time figuring out the colors on this one! It's hard, but I feel I'm learning a LOT! Like I went with blue first for his coat, but it was screaming way too much.. after a ton of painting over and over I found that desaturated reds and oranges read like a blue-ish that was a lot closer to the piece I was studying from.. Knowledge +1! Also the fact that he's wilfully used lower saturation on the colors of the dude, than the clouds in the bg was pretty awesome!

Just swinging by with a piece done for the Desimal Group over here in Norway. I know the guy is a little confusing, lookin' like a blacksmith and holding a wrench, but hell.. that's what the brief read :P I was thinking I'll maybe add some grit and dirt smears on hus face and arms and such as well (and maybe change the wrench to a hammer, or something like that.. more blacksmith-y)

Sorry haven't been posting in here lately--keep forgetting to do so.
It's great to see the studies. In the Wyeth one, more blues could be incorporated into the shadowed areas of the jacket and pants.
The warm/cold play in the mechanic/blacksmith is good. His forehead is bit flat; a highlight could help that out. It's good that the background has asymmetrical lighting, because the front/symmetrical pose in the middle of the canvas can be boring sometimes. Maybe a more interesting set-up next time.

Long time no see!
I'm digging your studies! They look great and will definately do you a lot of good. :)
Especially digging the Rockwell and Wyeth studies.
Forgive me for giving you a harsh crit, but when you design your own characters from scratch you have a tendency to give them a bit generic faces.
While overall anatomy and poses are great, I sometimes feel that the faces are lacking a bit. The face and the eyes are mirrors to the soul, so I think you could benefit from giving them a bit more attention. In your studies however, there are great emphazis on faces, so they look great!
This doesn't ring true for all of your pictures of course. Some of them have some nicely detailed and animated faces. Like the blacksmith/mechanic for example, and the sketches of the guys in turbans. Make-up lady and marine Stalin both have good faces, and the summoner lady (I think I know that face!) from the shadowrun pictures also have a very good face!
But the rest of the guys from the shadowrun pictures do look a bit generic.
Another crit is regarding the moustache mech-hand guy.
Sword blade looks a bit too flat and too shiny.
I know the sword isn't really that important in the picture, and when you have to work fast you have to simply things a bit, but a few more lines could give it a lot more "beef" and make it look a lot more vicious.
Have a look at these pictures for reference. Really look at the blades!
http://www.nihonto.us/HIZEN%208.jpg
http://www.nihonto.ca/morokage/page-l.jpg
I really like the summoner illustration btw.
The "strings" and the wireframe kinda look on the summoned guy are very cool,
and I dig the lighting. Good mood. And the guys grilling a dog in the city look cool.
Really like the reds and yellows in it.
And I'm looking forward to seeing more of those colour studies! They're a delight to the eye.
Keep it up! :)
