Meatsworthy: Thanks man! Glad you like!
OleOlsen: Probably won't do more on that one in particular... just wanted to veg' out and do something fast. I'll probably do more like it though :) There was half a thought behind the design at least... hehe.. Thanks for the crit!
One real quick'n'dirty SP and a sketch below...

Improving really fast there dCept! Veg'ing out and doing quick ones give you a lot of mileage lighting wise.
If you find your lighting feels a little off, zoom out to thumbsize, and make a big srtoke over the problem area to brighten/darken it. When it starts to look more correct at thumbnail, then that's the direction to go. Keep it up!

Hi there my friend, love that sp. Show us them muscles :D
And the fish is terific, I think you're on to something in your art. The texture from the custom brushes art awesome. Keep at, maybe it'll remove some of the smoothness from your digital art, make them more traditional looking.
By the way, I'm taking up my old parkour intrest. Was out climbing trees yesterday. So much fun and good training.
By the way tell me in good time about meeting up with you and hurri.
Take care my friend, and log on to skype once in awhile.

Good fish! Real bad ass deep sea fish! We like that!
I can't really see the two newest studies though. Perhaps you should do something about the contrast? Or perhaps I should get glasses?
The pilot guy is cool too. I love the colours.
I sort of get the feeling that his jaw is misplaced though.
Or maybe it's just the light. Anyway, keep up the good work!
BTW, we should take up our bords of wood, sandpaper, trucks and wheels at least one more time before the snow comes, methinks!

frostsnake: Glad you like! Bridgman is very good for studying! Glad you like the colorstuff.
Pencilator: Haha... well... I was ready for bed... at least I didn't tilt the mirror more, right? ;) Cool that you're taking up parkour again! I'm still into it.. check out the videos-section on parkour.net for some inspiration! I'm planning on seeing hurricane in the near future... I'll be sure to give you a holler! Glad you like the new stuff!
Shin: Hehe... it kinda came outta nowhere... wasn't planning on a fish.. wasn't planning on anything really... just playing with shapes, and there it was... ;) Maybe we can get in a little skatesession... most of the time I'm out and about these days, I'm running up walls and shit... like I said to Pencialtor, I'm getting more and more into parkour. But yeah... some rolling might be fun as well!
Just a color/drapery study... I know her face is real rough and all, but the dress was what interested me... reffed from Memoirs of a Geisha.
I'll have some more stuff up soon to show you guys what I've been up to lately.

hey dcept. i really like the kind of fish u did a post ago i think. the last one is looking good too. nice work on the folds and the cloth. really looks like thick cloth. so i guess that is exactly whaz u intended to work out. even if it is just a practice piece, u could to do some more graphic design to it, so that it becomes more special and unique! e.g. some pattern in the cloth or more texture.

hey dcept, man there has been a ton of imrovement since i was last on here. some really good drawings and concepts. i especially like the colors on the fish. study it a bit and find out what makes it successful. the last paint is looking nice (the fabric folds, and anatomy) however, i think the colors need some reworking. maybe get some nice oranges and purples in the fabric. also, i think the background colors should be changed. overall, looking good bro. keep at it

Nice looking gesisha. You're doing some nice brush work these days. What I'm missing is the image to tell me something? Not just studies, try interperate studies with a finished illustration, you're ready for it, I promise :D
Do you have any more film clips?
Me and a friend found a military track. Damn it's though.

OleOlsen: Glad you like! Good suggestion on taking the studies to something more interesting! I'll try to give 'em some more punch!
Ryan DeMita: Yeah... could probably use some more variation in color... I could probably use some more artistic license even though they're just studies ;)
xoet: Yeah... they're speedies no more than an hour put in I think... I don't time them though.... and well... hehe... like I said... the dress was what interested me... I think there's a nude study on the previous page, if that floats your boat...hehe
Pencilator: Thanks bro! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definately try to make the studies more interesting as a whole... glad you believe in me! ;)
And about the film clips... nah.. haven't had anyone with a camera with us the last times we've been out... I'll try to get someone to tag along next time... we're gonna hit a few of the spots in Oslo. Military tracks are good practice! Don't have anyone nearby, but it would be fun! I love doing parkour in cities, though... Something about the organic feel of running up a wall or vaulting something vs. the urban setting/concrete surrounding I think... don't know if that makes any kind of sense in anyones head but mine, but hey..hehe
Forgot I had a couple of moleskine pages... the egyptian statue and the faces from life. Spaceships... gawd I suck at tech stuff... hehe...

Fredrik, I do know what you mean. I call it freedom. Running towards a wall, puching with yourself high and grabbing the edge. Finding ways where there are no.
Would love to do more parkour. But my legs can't take the pressure. Still ahve problems with my lower legs. Just keeping it soft, training on sand and on the military track. Training the whole body without putting the whole weight on my legs.
Jump a little for me to :D

dCept, I think you know I love your sketchbook. You've got some really cool things going on here.
If I could offer you one crit, though, is to slow your lines down. Instead of doing short sketchy lines, try doing longer, slower lines on your subjects. Also, with your shading, experiment with backing off some. Where you do use shadow, draw the shadow shape in (outline it) and fill it with short controlled strokes moving in the same direction, and pay special attention to the shape of the object when doing this.
Cheers bro,
~Shane

Right... the raped moleskine-pages is the result of Dirty_C's thing "you're not here to make pretty pictures"... result was that I wanted to make something ugly... oil-speedies, if you like. Anyways... didn't concentrate on these... just slopping paint around... was kinda refreshing :)
Some crap-ass anatomy-studies. Bridgman and not Bridgman.
And last, a "too-speedy" (seems I have a thing for arachnids lately... hehe).. I've been loaded with lots of stuff (which I promise to show as soon as I can!) so this is what I've managed to squeeze in.

hey dcept, your using the more opaque brushes seems to be yielding stronger results. I particularly like that landscape, it conveys an excellent sense of depth. As a crit, be aware of the planes of the face when contorting the expression into an emotion. You seem to be twisting the planes and the features, distorting it. Bring more on!

Holy crap! Are you trying to give me a heart attack or somethin'?
Here I am, looking through your stuff, nodding appreciatively, and thinking to myself: "Good show!"
For there's a lot of good stuff here. The pencil of the guy with the sword, a pretty cool enviro, etc... but then BOOM!
The elven mage and the guy with the sword! They're great!
Very living, very detailed, good colours, and EQUITMENT I'd die to loot. Especially I love the mage. That ain't no wine sipping pancy tower wizard, but a real adventuring battle mage! I love the leather armour, and the thing he uses to strap that book to himself is absolutely awesome. I want one of those, damn it!
The sword of the other guy is good stuff too, and the tattered cloak is a good effect.
The insect monster is also very cool. Nice details. Looks realistic.
The scaly guy has a very flat nose. And the "bumps" or scales on his neck look sort of flat as well. The bumps around his eyes look good though!
I like the helmeted guy. His helmet has got this.... emotionless brutal killer look to it, but his eyes look sad and tired, and it sort of looks like the light replies to that. Good stuff.
Keep doing your thing!

wow tons of paints. very nice bridgeman studies too! dude massive improvement here as always. good designs and concept. very impressive work.
its been said, black "kills" the color. this is sorta true but its really grey that kills the color, not necessarily black. grey will flatten out the saturation of your image, i have this problem all the time, its frustrating. remember to have a well thought out combination of darks, lights, saturation, greys, and all that in your color selection (doesnt always need to be balanced always). think about the color porportions. for instance, grey carries very little weight in a composition, whereas bright fucking orange has a WHOLE ton of weight. bright fucking orange next to darker blues is even more dominate. anyhow i guess some of that might help. basically, get rid of some of that grey in there and make some areas pop, are you using color layers to paint in photoshop? or just adding in transpartent color layers?
alright bro keep at it. once you get your colors figured out these images are going to be top notch.
take care

damn nice stuff, that critique is coming, rest asure :P
i think you should change texture in your brush, i'm starting to hate it because you use it to everything, skin, cloth, sword, lips... etc
it's almost so bad it destroyes the image, dirtying it up too much because of the lack of following the form and texture variation.
ESP. when the texture is close to the background which has the same (see last samurai)
think about it.... try to blend, change texture, google something etc etc...
pen work is shaping up nicely, starting to add more "sub-shapes" and good light... keep on trucking and try to merge each part more with the rest and not having it local....like last paper, bottom dudes chin tentacles, almost looks like a cope-paste job ;)
all in all, i'm ripping you hehe, but with a cute big lovefilled plastic hook :P

Good job on the master studies. Looks like an interesting approach that i'm gonna have to try! Here's that one crit i promised you ages ago: That sword fella from the art test has some problems with his sword. first of all, the edge of the sword looks blunt, cuz you put shadows and highlights along the cutting edge to suggest that its rounded.. looks off to me. second, the grip of the sword (hilt?) should go into the sword nearer the blunt edge, if you understand what i mean.. Third, that horn thing on the helmet should be smack in the middle of his forehead, now it looks like he has only one horn on the side of the helmet, and it looks weird. another horn on the other side of the head (the hithermost side) could also work, but i think a "unicorn" kind of helmet would be cooler. (and way more phallic ;))
I also agree with hurri on the brush texture. Maybe a week of detox would do you good? nothing but airbrush for a month perhaps? :P

Hey there D, great work as usual, skin values are begining to level out also. Weird imaginative stuff as usual. Make sure you describe the form on facial features, not just stick them on the ball of the face like 2 dimensional stickers.
Really improving though. Where you've used hard confident high opacity strokes on the rembrant is where it's most effective i think.

dude - your digitals have gotten much better my man! looks like the tablet and anatomy practice have been paying off! One thing I'm noticing on your figures (from life mostly) is that they tend to be either a little too fat or a little too skinny. This is usually the case when you measure everything from a horizontal or everything from a vertical. When figure drawing, always find a stationary point that you want to be "correct" and then you can build everything around that point - measuring angles will give you correct proportions. Also check the position of something in relation to something else (on straight lines). For example, if you have a sitting pose, you might ask yourself "how much further out from her nose does her shoulder come, or for that matter does it at all?"
btw I LOVE this one _ http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=38874&stc=1&d=1161550213

December 12th, 2006, 06:46 AM
Hey dCept,
Looks like the life drawing class is going well, always a pleasure to see the studies. I've got an assignment for you for the next figure session. concentrate on contour. Do some blind contour drawings of the model, spend a few minutes just slowly letting your eye and hand together, looking at how the body swells and ebbs. This will help you forget about how the drawing looks and will make you be very delibrate about your marks. Then, try some regular contour drawings, but ONLY draw when your actually looking at the model, don't make marks when your looking at the paper, there aren't any answers there. Do a LOT of these, it'll train your eye and free you from correcting yourself as you make the mark, which sounds like a good thing, but it breeds a lack of confidence and a lot of erasures, which isn't.
I only harass you about this because you're attacking both line and mass when you do the gestures, which means you're worrying too much about the marks rather than actually learning from the model.
Anyhow, that digipaint environment looks bad ass! Can't wait until the next update dude!

Wow, very impressed with those life drawings. Keep 'em going, they have such a nice flow and energy to them for such a short amount of time, so good job!
Good work on the enviro, try and think and look back how you can make bigger strokes and minimise the unecesary details.
Just an idea, try working over the top of the life drawing on a new piece of paper, lay down the pose real quick like you did the first time. Then practice the anatomy in a bit more detail, or add your own creation, make it a character, a creature .. or morph it into a building or something.

I have a suggestion for the digitals, remember to add areas were your stroke
texture is very intricate and some were the eye can rest, think of how
hurricane creates focus by mantainting some areas soft and some harsh...
I made a little paint over to show you my idea, just say the
word and will remove it, heres it is the link, I hope you get some
ideas out of it :P god knows I'm still figuring out all this color sat
and edge control thing, so do take my suggestion with a lot of salt :^^:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/maxetormer/MatriarchWoverP.jpg?t=1166174105
Remember that contrasts its your friend, try experimenting vanishing edges
with the airbrush and mix it up with hard plane brakes were the light
strike on a more perpendicular way, an well just experiment away
use bold colors strokes and see how you can make it work for your self,
we all have different pallets, still I wish you did more color experiments.
Well thats about it, Oh I posted a sneak peak of the oil piece that ill
will send to you on my thread, drop around and tell me your opinion :^^:

hey, i got a challenge for you. Next 4 drawings you draw should have nothing but linework. No shading. That should be interesting. Catch you on msn.
Niva.
January 8th, 2007, 06:48 PM
Hey, I like your pencil sketches and your style, it's unique. I'd like to see more work with realism and accurate human proportions though. The position of the guy with the fiddle in #1147 isn't working... I tried to draw a boy playing a fiddle recently too and struggled with it and I didn't even have the challenge of dealing with him sitting down! It's a difficult piece to work out but perhaps you should consult some refs for that position, the legs look ok, the upper body and arms, neck and head where the problems are and I'm sorry I can't be more precise.
In your most recent batch of sketches I like the little boy and girl - however I'm only saying they're little because of proportions... the rendering hints they might be old but I can't tell.
Anyways, keep them coming, you have a huge SB and I have lots of things to learn from your work.
fooxoo
January 10th, 2007, 09:00 AM

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=70188&stc=1&d=1167518918
Is in my opinion the best one you have made so far in regards to proportions.
I think it was Hurri that said that your proportions dont work, not the proportions them selfes, but in combination with eachother.
This is something you have almost constantly, and is one of the hardest things with proportions.
But you are getting better and better with each post.
I really like your valuestudies.

Hi there my friend. Sorry for not posting here sooner. You are doung fine, steady progress. This last challenge was fun to see. Good work. Intresting that both you and fooxoo only used the silhouett for the creature nad renderd the backpack. But then again, it was a 1h challenge. I'd like to see you work more with both hard and soft edges. Maybe it'll add more depth.
Take care, talk to you soon again.

dont know if I posted this before, but totaly helps!
your latest is coop is good, and only in one hour. soemthing that could define some areas better, is if you scaled up the image double size, and used an eraser to define the siluette more, like in focus areas like the heads. then scale back..
seems like you got something going for you, so keep playing with it!

keep on doing the studies and be anal about the proportions!, and don't draw straight arms!
things are looking good, better proportions but you still need to tighten it up more!
cheers buddy, you're doing great
Lake
January 16th, 2007, 09:19 AM
Glad you're doing your studies, D. Hurricane's got a more than valid point; be anal about proportions. More specifically, thinking about what you're drawing, while you're drawing it, instead of "just drawing" - meaning as you pencil in the arm, refer back to your studies and put it ALL in - this would tighten up pretty much everything you need work on.
frostsnake
January 16th, 2007, 10:38 AM
just saying hi and keep it up!
studies are killer. all the muskle is hard to remeber, so maybe try to create some kind of simplefied construction, your own personal inventions that looks like the bisep, tricep or supinator longus... this way you will hopefully remember it better, but I guess still its all about drawing them alot.

Ok I have a suggestion, try not doing the pencil
strokes in the same direction all the time,
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=77895&stc=1&d=1168915821
right now the fabric only has strokes from left to
right going down, remember to switch directions
with the form, a good way to avoid going in the
same direction its to spend no more than 10-5 secs
on one area of the drawing;jump around!,
also its good to avoid getting caught in detail ;)
KEEP PUSHING IT!!
Oh and I like your sig cabron, every time I read it

That last horse is great, but there is something about the bend of the neck that bugs me, i think it's the area just behind the back of the head... odd curvature..
And i would like some skin folds (vague) around the front legs because the legs are up.

Thats what i'm talking about! Nice job on the art test! Your swirly lady is coming along nicely too, you got some nice contrast going on there! But i still think the shoulders are too manly, and there's something odd about the hips. I think the hips should start further up or something.. As for this latest one, even if its just a speedy, you should think about how the skull would sit under the skin and muscles, think about how the teeth sits in the jaw.

wakazou: Thanks for the crit... yeah... I know I kinda left 'em hanging... really lazy... seeing as how there's so much detail there... oh well... :)
Slash: Can always count on you critting when you're in here :) Good stuff! The swirly lady is turning into a long term project.. hehe... I'll definately keep your crits in mind! How's the comic coming along?
Hurricane: hehe... brainfart... too much ganxta hiphop :P hahaha
Sirio_Brozzi: Honestly don't know what I was going for... heh... kinda exaggerated something something... glad you got that association! Cool to see what kinda stuff people connect with!
Badger: Thanks for dropping by! Glad you like my stuff! More color below :)
Right... I've gotten a freelance gig that's taking up a lot of my time these days... I'll show some stuff when I can from that! So hence the lack of updates... here's a couple of digis I've squeezed in though... the whale-thing is a COW that I saw the topic for... didn't submit though...heh
... and I'll get around to scanning some pages real soon! Promise :) Thanks for the support and crits!!

Hehe, thats one wonderfully phallic whale! ;) I think it could be more elegant if you gave him a longer body, right now there head to body ratio is a little uneven. Nice dynamic self portraits too, i wish i could do that! You have good control over simplified shapes/light direction/form there.

Nice update bro!
You should start thinking about edges and how to controll them.
i did a quick rape-paintover of the latest pic to show you what i mean.
http://www.bjornhurri.com/sb/07/March/Dcept_paintover.jpg
when you're using a hardbrush only you can go over it with additional 5 minutes and soften transitions and edges where the "focus" can be toned down.
cheers buddy i hope it helps :P

nice update, and thanks for stopping by.
good design on the lava swimmer, maybe throw in a few more of those reds at the tail or something to pull it all together more. bit more contrast maybe aswell.
concur with hurri on those digi doodles, now's the time for edge control (look who's talking?:P). but the depth of the original is definately there,so keep it up! :)

yeh cool stuff man! nice energy and looseness in the digis! id also like to add with the limbs to think of harder edged forms around the boney ends, and fleshier, rounded forms over the shafts of the bone

Wow... lotsa replies! Thank you all for the support! I'm terribly sorry that I've been away for so long, but I've started working full time painting now... I'm hella stoked and I'm working on a very cool project... having a blast to say the least :D Unfortunately I can't show any of the work I've been doing on that yet.... and I guess I've had to adjust to working full time with painting and getting in studies and personal work as well... getting there though... I've got a small shitload of sketches lying around that I haven't scanned yet, and I'll get to that soon... but I'm moving out of my apartment these days as well, so my scanner is temporarily unavaliable. Below is some digis I've been doing, some updates on stuff I've posted before, some speedies and experiment... I haven't dug up everything I've done of personal stuff since last time yet, so I'll put that on here as soon as I sort through my HD's!
I'll try to be a better CA'er and update more frequently! Missed you guys!

Hey looking good :confident
If you decide to work some more on the Mushroom_sporeflower.jpg I would suggest that you put in the dude again for size. In the colourized version without the dude the plants size feels small like an ordinary mushroom.
Hope you get back to updating more often.

YO Dception - it's been a while since I stopped by -
your new digitals have a life to them that your old ones definitely did not - they're tighter and have more character.
I'd advise you to begin with gestures, or to watch the ones that you're already starting with. your finished figures seem somewhat disjointed, like you drew each body part separately.

After three years and 42 pages, you have improved A LOT! You have some really like concepts and studies. Its impossible to find a favorite as they are all great.
Litt engelsk og litt norsk :)
Rett og slett nydelige tegninger du har her! Du har tydligvis en ypperlig sans for lys og skygge!

max1975: Thanks! Yeah... good looking girls for sure :) The one you were wondering about is a hiphop artist I work a bit with in Norway... The name is Stella Mwangi aka STL... You'll find her on myspace.com/stlmuzik I think the URL was, if you wanna listen to what she's done as well :)
hp: Good advice for sure! I'll be sure to remember that! Thanks!
Camara: Guess you got me there :) Sometimes I do that, sometimes I go directly into color... hehe.. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the greyness..hehe
Guilemo: Cool that you found me in the insane amount of SB's on here now! :) Glad du liker sakene, som jeg skrev i SB'en din... alltid fett å få positive kommentarer!
Right... a few pages of sketches and a couple of speedy digis... sorry I don't have more to show for after such a long time...
