Hey man, you've done a lot since i last visited your sketchbook!! I've seen some of the pieces of msn, and given my crits there, but you've been holding out on me, there are some really cool works here! Your girlfriend and the gerome study are looking killer, perhaps the best i've seen from you, and i think these might be the first in the next generation of d-cept!
Keep rockin man, and get your ass on msn more often!!

the neck thingy becomes too small on its right shoulder, too extreme perspective. could use more texture to get the right fabrique-feeling.
And the last two or three buttons are a bit to flat, they should be rounded and more to the left side of the pic.
A thing you can do to understand it better is to (on another layer) draw a line along the center of his body to see it more clearly. Like I did with that assassin of yours before.
Anyway, I like this a lot and will check it out later on.

Lovely stuff. Papers are looking good also.
You seem to be doing hair pretty flat, do it with quick strokes as the outline, hair is pretty random stuff, especially after a few blast of wind!
Keep it up mate!

interesting stuff dcept - I'd have to say you're concentrating a little TOO hard on your rendering. Try doing some unrendered linework sometime... just outline it and try to make light using only line weight. I think it'd help a lot.

a thing that popped into my mind is that you have the same 'problem' as me. we always tend to draw characters from the same angle. their heads and bodies always turned left..
well it's not a problem, just flip it in ps.
last creature has some things i'd comment. the visible arm looks a bit too much like a cone. try to give it more dynamic shapes.
same with the legs, give them a more nonregular shape. think peanut instead of melon.
first head of the second sheet reminds me that i'm going to the knife-concert this thursday!
get your ass to sthlm soon, myself - I can't afford travelling.

Loong time no post from me. :)
I like that you're spending time on bigger pictures. Looking good. One thing that I noticed is that they seem a little too monochomatic. What I'm trying to say is that you could try to introduce more tempereature into your highlights and shadows.
Ie. warmer highlights and colder shadows etc. To manage the transition use a more intense version of the color in the core shadow (where light goes over to dark). Not sure I'm making sense. But if it needs more explanation I can give it a try. I'm struggling with this myself at the moment as well.

the first one here is definitely the best I've ever seen from you. Great use of color and composition, and you really haven't overdone anything here. If there's anything to crit, it's just that the ground is too flat and you need to finish detailing. but that's all!

the rendering is indeed has improved a lot, would not
mind seeing some line work, I feel that the edges of
your images some times are a bit rougth, you are way
more confident on your use of ligth, but your line work
still hurts the cuality of the images, oh! and the anatomy
studies are looking real nice, good idea mixing mentler with

Cold: I work in painter, but basically yeah... I start out with one fairly dark and one fairly light and toggle between them and adjust opacity first.. After I get some of the values down, I go in with the colorpicker and choose values. Last I pop in some darker darks and highlights and such with an opaque brush.
Badger: Thanks, man! Glad you're liking it :) More expressions coming tomorrow. Here's the WIP you said I should post..hehe
Right.. I've been noodling a bit on this one the last two days... wanted to do a horror-ish thing.. Gonna push it more tomorrow, so I'll post another WIP then. I went for a 2:35 ratio on it...wanted to see if I got a cinematic feel from it... lemme know if it works.

Just letting you know that i was here and looking at your faces, one thing though, can you leave the backround white, or paint them white after you are done with the faces, gives it abit more edge if you like, thank you!
panda is right, and the way to sharpen up is, contrast, put brightest lines next to darkest lines = bobs your uncle!

Nice facial expressions! A lot of subtle stuff on the face is coming across well. Did you try any small, pure white highlights on number 2, or were there just none to be had in that lighting? The face does look darker than the others. Your morgue scene is also looking creepy, I think the monochromatic tendencies kind of add to that effect. =] And what is 3CH?

GOOOD work, but I fell that the mountains are a bit too soft looking,
perhaps suing a hard flat brush giving more efasis to strokes (more
defined brush slices) could make the trick, and imo the clouds look to
regular looking, go more crazy with em think of Mr. Blonde abstract
paintings when doing skys, dam that kid is good! or Jfoster´s texturing
going crazy on the sky is fun cause whos gonna tell ya that cloud

Woah! That last one is something !
Great enviroment! And the colours! Very different from the colours you usually use! Your horizon is really expanding man. =)
And I like the changes you made on the morgue scene. Nice light colour, and nice textures on the dead guy.
One thing though... the light sources in the ceiling. They're lamps right? Not windows? I think perhaps it might be good if you added some detail to the nearest one and perhaps the second nearest one so that one could see that they are indeed lamps, because it looks sorta flat, if you know what I mean.
Then again, it might not be important. I studied the picture for a quite a long time before I even noticed it.
anyway, keep it up man! You're getting better and better!

I feel I'm on my way out of the hole, though... so that's good! :)

Finally the oil-WIP...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/2dpics/SPoilAngry.jpg
More soon, guys!
[EDIT] Forgot one oilpainting... this one is kinda minimalistic as opposed to the usual stuff I do... I made it after I'd been in a slump (not just artwise... but lots of different reasons playing in there...).. there is a term in norway at least (haven't heard it in english... ) that for example a story will have a "red line" that runs through it... i.e. the main plot, or chain of events... if you lose that you lose the story... so here's where I found my red line again...
There are some glares from the surrounding light (presumably from my livingroom window) that can be seen at the bottom right corner and at the top of the image.. sorry about that, but this was the best I could get... photographing oils is a bitch.. hehe

Like that last painting nice hand, composition and I have always been a sucker for the black or dark and red combination as a contrast. And :teeth: even I thought of picking up the red thread and of much of what comes with it when I saw the painting 8) Looking at it I can't stop thinking I got only 6 weeks of 24/7 at work then I´ll be back to taste the paint over and over and over oh my..... anyway have to go back and finish some more work before I go to bed...keep going and remember

Wip look great so far, especially the background and lighting!
Front figure doesnt quite fit, I think the colours are too bright for the environment. I'd expect more contrast in the shadows seeins as the lightsource is so limited. Punch up the darks and desaturate them more, ground the character into the scene more!
Oh, and the base of the lampost seems to be behind the corner its lighting, im guessing its partially in snow, but that doesnt read too well right now.

This (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/2dpics/SPoilAngry.jpg) is amazing D!! wow!
Work is getting much more solid mate, i also really like those quick little doodles, very creative, very lively.
Be careful to universalise the amount of texture you use across and enviro.
On the chow i'd bring some warms into the light and really knock back the furthest background using desaturated blues, cause it's competing with that side wall.
Sweet work.

Hi yeah I think it will get other people thinking tooo since I'm not very deep you you know not thinking about jungian archetypes and such I´m more like duh most of the time :tihi:
Anyway took a break from work and thought I would try to better my understanding of the illusion of and sense of direction in a painting, so I used you muhaha.... anyway since you got a wip I will try some of my thoughts with you. If you think I'm wrong - please - tell me where I went wrong so I get back on the right track. ok
It look likes she's just about to start the movement where you're about to sit down on a chair or needs to lean on the wall. The thighs have the wrong direction. Not this kind of direction like / or \ , but the third dimension. I did an example the orange painted thighs are a quick overpaint of the girl thighs. It's exaggerated to make my thoughts more clear. Follow link.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Mindboggler/hm.gif
as you see the 2d direction are correct but not the third one. The way you show volume is key to get the correct weight to your figure so she doesn't fall over etc.
I think using the simple construction Pernilla showed us in Stockholm would be very useful to get it easier for you to attach the legs correctly in the hip thus getting the right kind of ellipses that show the correct direction. I think the key problem is how you think when you attach the leg into the hip. This because the thigh gets wrong but not the rest of the leg. And finally the ellipses are important to show direction the "ellipses" I "see" in yours show the wrong direction if she's not to lean against the wall that is :)
Well what do you think?
well now I'm in a hurry :^^;: :)

Hey man, i'm liking the oils. It's always nice to see more traditional work after a serving of digital buffet. The WIP is looking nice, makes the viewer wonder what the hell's going on. And nice work with the red line too, i'm liking the sense of mystery in that. For all we know there's a damn monster at the end trying to fish for humans. And the ChoW is nice too, you did a really good job highlighting the bricks being illuminated by the lamp. But keep up the good work as usual man, cheers.

Oh! I see big things have happened here!
The Mirror Produtions stuff is interesting!
Looking forward to seeing more of that.
Very neat wounds on that second Mirror prod guy!
The enviro for the project is also cool.
When I saw it, I got one of them "aha" experiences, you know.
"So... That where they got them nasty wounds, eh?" :P
Lots of neat sketches as well.
Y' know I approve of that weapon sketch! :P
Haha! And that Uncle collabo is hilarious! Poor guy :D
And I love the oils! Great stuff! Lots of emotion on the first one. I think those facial expression studies really paid of. ;)
I believe it could do with some teeth in the lower jaw too, though.
I thought it looked sorta fishy, so I tried to scream out in agony myself, in front of the mirror, and teeth were clearly around!
The red line picture is... well. Tight! Very cool idea! I love the lighting and shadow play in that picture as well.
It's cool to see you put an enviroment on the CHoW girl. Bad ass fella she's shadowing there. She's very brightly lit herself though, so if the guy has got henchmen, she's up for some trouble!
I love the weapon of the gas masked fellow!
And I think the Space Pirate lady could make a nice digital painting. ;)
Anyway, you've added a lot of cool stuff since last time I popped in here!
Keep it up!
Ah, and we've gotta hook up and do some rolling sometime soon!

There's some interesting themes, and obscure historical references running through your environments. There's also haphazard colour choices and inconsistent lighting. I'd advise you to take a bit more time when establishing your palette and lightsources.
I often find that setting a part of the painting aside to be flooded with light and richer detail, leaving much of the rest fairly obscure, helps to establish a focal point of interest. Don't pile on the detail and uniform light all over the painting.
Patronising, incoherant rant ends
;)

Wow! You astonish me! That's a huge amount of stuff since last I checked.
Let's see....
The Ship painting is cool! Different from your usual stuff in both colour and topic.
The one with the guy with the spike piercing is good Stuff!
I love the lighting in it! Looks really good. His hair too, is good shit!
Things look sort of soft and blurred though, but I guess that it is intentional?
His armour could perhaps do with some neat ornamental shit as well. You know. Either that, or scratches and bumps ;)
As for the battle scene, that one looks good as well!
It looks like they have been fighting for a while, and are getting pretty tired. ;)
There's one thing I've been thinking about for a while though.
You seem to use a lot of green light sources everywhere.
Now, there's nothing wrong with green light, but I think perhaps you could benefit from experimenting more with different colour and lighting settings!
That goes for hard/soft light as well. You use a lot of very soft light sources, me thinks. But still! Good shit!
Woah! And those design process characters! Please make something of that first guy, in the robes! That looks like a bad ass character to me! Evil elven mage! Hell yeah!

May 28th, 2006, 05:41 PM
wow, stuff has apparently happened here since my last visit!
I really like the direction your going into in the, of Badger, mentioned pic.
The life drawing from the hospital shines confidence in your pencil, especially the bottom two. And I must say, it looks like you've begun to compromise your style, bringing new fresh elements into it.
The thumbnails of characters are also awesome, good thinking and interesting designs.
But sometimes I see you go back to a more insecure way of drawing. You tend to forget sometimes the things you learned in your studies.
Work on the proportions, both facially and bodily.
Now the ears are to flat and pressed against the head. The skull is more caveman-like with the slope of the forehead, the thickness of the bone area around the eyes and the big lower lip.
Now we must arrange for the summer's week session of countryside-drawing!
Peace!

Hey man, im diggin the sketchbook, went through it and the development was astounding. You work wonders with paint man, its sick. Your imagination is also quite astouding and your ability to sense what is needed to complete each work, perfect example being the painting of the green scenario with the red priest type character looking on from the balcony. Very impressive.

hey dCept, looking pretty darned good...only a few things to work on, like the figure ground relationship...see the halo of color around the subjects? I have no idea how to fix that, but its something which painters have been struggling with for centuries....and edges, soft to hard transitions and stuff like that, hard edges in light, soft in shadows, all that crap....
anyhow, silhouttes are sweet, and I hope for more pencils!!

Awesome stuff Dcept! I love the guy with the mutant arm. Your pencils are looking mighty fine as well! One suggestion I have about the last digi you did with the mountains, is that the color of the light on his face doesn't seem to go well with the environment. But everything else looks really good. Can't wait to see some more.

Uuh, I like the monk guy, though I must admit I think he´s even better without the armor, but it´s a matter of taste I guess. That angel speedy´s nice as well, good use of light. Your characters come out best if you add a little backround, like the mountains in the blueberry sketch. Really pushes your figures.
Keep up the good work and have fun at Hultsfred. :)

First of all, talk to an admin and do something about the title. 24th of april doesn't sound to good. "We want to see an update soon!" :P
The buildning from life looks really good. Perspective drawings from life isn't always so easy to draw.
About the digital chow painting. It looks to clean and soft. Almost static. My view of this could have something about my view towards digital painting most of the time. Painting digital you don't have any textures when you begin and the colors from the brushes are placed in a regular pattern and it always flow perfect. So when painting, things can easily look static and almost to perfect. People that I look up when painting digitaly are those who can do this, creat a chaos that is irregular.
Hope this wasen't just rambling and that you can take it with a grain of salt :)
Hugs!

that digi paint is tight! i really like the eerie lighting. your figures are massively improving! im working on my figures as well, its tons of fun. the perspective drawing is good, keep in mind composition when doing environments. the two posts on either side of your drawing are exactly the same distance form the right and left of the page. its creates a somewhat static composition and chops up the movement (sometimes this is intentional). but i think if you left one poll out the composition might look more interesting and move the eye around the page better. for instance if kept the left poll and got rid of the right one the eye would move across the top of the building, up the poll and then if you through some clouds in for the eye to follow back to the building it would create interesting movement. the perspective is looking really tight though. keep cracking at perspective and always have composition in mind and you'll crank out some sweet shit. keep postin bro!

Heya babe --v
That last Buddha statue is great, the shape reads very, very well with the hard highlights (on the head, knee and arm).
It could probably use some more flipping and rotating cause the shape might be weird, but I'm guessing that you put most time on naling the values. Which you succeded with :)
Like your latest chow. It has nice colours and details, though you should check the weight. She looks as if she's tipping over anytime now :)

I got a theory that if you had made the little highlight in the eye one perhaps even two nuances lighter the contrast would have lead the viewers eye toward the eye in a way that would enhance your frog-perspective and make him a little bit more mightier. hey dCept, your stuff is getting stronger and stronger, I especially like that spanish ChoW, you milked that pose for a lot of attitude, plus the push/pull of the edges is a lot stronger than normal. which brings me to my crit about edges, don't forget about them when working digitally. I'm sure you're already aware of the types of edges and why they look the way they do, but here's a thread (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913) by elwell that gives some brief rules. I actually thought your toreador was quite strong, but unpolished, and at first glance I wouldnt have noticed that hes non spanish, I mean hes not completely decked out in the classic uniform, but I could see a Spanish toreador wearing that... also like some1 else already mentioned, theres not a place for the eyes to sort of zone in on, what actually stands out the most is the guys back and his ass, and where his shoes and pants meet. I mean thats what your showing us, but it would be nice if you would have lead our eyes a bit more towards the cape, or head, or even the lettering on his pants.

If you take requests for practice I'd like to see you do more Eastern Statues.. preferably Krishna or Kali. I love this one! <3
Great stuff all around... Some of these need more depth and the lines are shaky like your nervous.. unsure of yourself... even after all that practice. Do you do mostly digital art and your out of practice with pencil and paper or is it something intentionally stylistic? If it's supposed to be stylistic I don't think your quite pulling of a believable "He's got control of the medium, but he choses to morph it this way" flow to it that allows the breaking of the art foundation rules.. err.. guidelines.
err.. you know what I mean right?

hey fellow pker. the tribal geezer up top is a strong piece, good rendering, think it needs to be a little darker in the dark areas tho, as they say, lighter lights darker darks or something.
i had an idea for poses, i was gunna try drawing from some still pics of people doing kongs and other moves to see how the muscles work, think it would be a good exercise anatomy wise, maybe look up david belle pics, or seb foucan since his muscles show more.
PS don't mind if i have a go at drawing some of them pics you posted in the 'wats everyone look like' thread do ya? nice poses there.

I haven't been around here too much, and I'm sorry for that... a lot of stuff has been happening lately... some good and some not so good...
Anyways... time for an update at least! Some sketches and some digis... The last digi is a concept from the short film we're making now.. more stuff on that on our webpage: www.mirrorpictures.com or directly to the short: http://www.mirrorpictures.com/holdeplass/web/main/main.htm.

dude, here's a critique that i think will change the appearance of your stuff alot (or something)
your objects doesnt touch ground, or the shadow that is there, the edge against edge form are almost never present.
so i think you need to really define stuff more on certain areas... no core shadows on that electric post thingy leaning against the wall...
think about it, look at all the hard edges/shadows there should be in the last 5 pics.
cheers dude and keep on pushing, your progress is insane!

Your sketchbook is way underated imho sometimes

Your work are above average, and I have seen several "awsome"

great improvement in this thread, i like it.
The zombie head looks great, and the last head is so weird its actually cool.
Nice to see some good variety of subjects in a sketchbook, but maybe when you practice enviroments you should try something more abstract, even without actual rendering but by defining individual shapes first and then adding light, mood and the rest. And change perspective too, try different 2 point persp in varrius positions.
Probably once in a while you could try the complete opposite exercise, just practicing detail and rendering in an extreme manner (the last head could be a nice start for something really horribble ;))
keep us updated ;)

whats up d-c?
nice update! im really diggin the holdeplass concept. The expression on his face is pretty interesting. He looks like he got his ass kicked but still has a very confident glare. Nice concept and depth. Its always cool when you can tell whole story with a character concept. One thing im confused about is whether or not he is alive or a zombie. I feel he is still alive, just beat to hell. Really try to hit your point home with the concept. My other suggestion bro, is maybe to work on some hardcore anatomy studies and really beef your characters up! :spam:. Keep in mind the planes of the faces that creat shapes. Your photoshop skills are improving very quickly and combined with a just a little more understanding of anatomy and rendering you'll really push the boundaries.
TheGnoll brought up a good point about environments studies. I have a hard time with using abstract shapes myself, but the other day i just played around in photoshop with shapes and really found some interesting compositions! Check out Scott Robertsons "Creating Unique Environments" if you havent yet. Really nice work and dedication. Keep at it!

Hey dCept! Just jumping in to say: Stop the fiddling around and do more studies! Anatomy, perspective, line quality, rendering...you know, stop pulling those shapes out of your head and take some time to observe them from life! Yes, studies can be rather boring and aren't too entertaining to the average CA browser, but they are cruicial to YOU and your art. I haven't checked your latest updates, besides the last two, but I still see alot of bad habits that has been present since last year, and you know...put three weeks of focused, repetitive and accurate studies on your calendar, and you will improve so much, you might wonder why you spent the last six months on grinding things out of your head.
There. I'll go practicing some martial arts now, just in case I'm unfortunate enough to meet you in person :P

Hi!
I love your last studies on the face and the comments you put near them. I allways forget so many things, so it's allways nice to look at these almost tutorial like studies.
As promised: some crits on the piece with the chick. Very nicely rendered shadows on the forearm! I really like the overbright light on the hand aswell, even though that hand is pointing out of the painting.
The background is a bit flat and the guy behind her does not seem very relevant. It would be nice to darken the lower side of the background as you did between her arms, which makes the light on them really dramatic.
Her face and maybe arms could use a bit of that blue reflecting off the edges to make her fit into the scene a bit more.
Nice how you saturated the edges of the shadows, but it may be a bit overdone in some areas... It bothers me a bit on her cheek.

The flying tube fat guy is a huge improvement in rendering over the soldiers before him. Great progress. And good ref study too... when you do these, watch the value in percent when picking colors to become familiar with the range light/mids/shadows should be in when you paint from imagination.

Meatsworthy: Thanks man! For the kind words, and I appreciate the tip! I tried to keep it in mind today when I did one that is much lighter in values.
Meagre offering today.... a moleskine page and a digistudy from ref... at least I'm being more frequent here than I've been lately... and wanting to keep that up keeps me kicking my own ass into drawing and painting more! Hehe..

Right... I've been out and about most of the day... so no anatomy, sadly... I'll do some now though... update tomorrow with that.. However, my brother was out flying his R/C airplane... and a moth decided his ear was a good place to hang out inside... he had to go to the doctor to get the fucker out :D He freaked out pretty bad... so I did the moleskine-sketch after he told me about it... hehe... and the flightsuit study is from ref. My brother is mad into airplanes, so I saw this book with uniforms and stuff at his place. Result below..
thanks for looking!
