hey dcept... sorry I've been a while. Your stuff is showing massive improvement, especially your digital painting. I see in your digital paintings that you've tightened up quite a bit, and I think this helps a lot. Your rendering's still a bit bulbous (I have problems with this myself)... try to let the highlights reach the edge of the objects.

Hey Cept,
Like Some Guy said, you are really improving and im really chuffed
that your trying new things and those perspective drawings are
great. The tree looking down looks good, but the wooden
plank bit to the left doesnt look in perspective. At the moment its
raised up, but i think the end of the plank it should be lowered
slightly, but still super ! :teeth:
That market stand painting( if its not a painting sorry), looks very
funny with the dark background and those bright eyes, like the
simpsons really :)
The Feral-alley looks like an excellent presective peice, love the
dark colours. Overall your works improving and i cant wait to

Awesome perspective on that tree picture. I also like that alleyway, and the guns (though maybe you could draw them from some more interesting angles).

Even more variation and even more progress can be seen throughout the pages again!! I like the guns, I myself have had those in mind as well, but haven't got myself to draw them just yet.
As always, your strong shadings and figures are really inspiring and evokes some cool ideas for me. The tree picture with the oh-so-intriquing perspective is my favourite, for it just.....has the feel!! Very well done with that one.

Something looks a little off on the smoke...Maybe it's too textured? Maybe too evenly textured, like it needs a few bigger, fuzzier areas in the foreground. The ship on the other hand could use some more definition.
Good atmosphere, and good colors for the most part, but I dunno about the orange on the ship. Maybe the ship oughta be bluish like the rest of the scene, but with some clearly defined orange lines and highlights? Just a thought...

Hey man. I see the workshop has done good things to you. :) I'm gonna be the party blooper and crit you right away. (Or at least attempt to.) You seem to have a lot of fun with non-ref drawing, and thats cool, but you could benefit greatly from doing more studies. What I find to be the most rewarding method, is to be analytical when you approach the chosen subject.
Lets say you devote one week to intensively study arms. The first thing you do, is to get alot of info on arms. You have several anatomy books, (both hogharth and loomis are awiable on the net) you know that kChen has some awesome geometric breakdowns of the arms and you are more or less familiar with baboartpage's studies. Besides, you have two arms yourself and, most likely, a mirror. Where to start? Basics. First you get familiar with the proportions. (the scapula is half the size of the humerus, the humerus ends at the lowest rib of the trunk, the radius and ulna are slightly shorter than the humerus, etc etc.) Drawing from life is the most effective way to study, in my experience. You can do some lengthy copies from the books. It will improve your drawing and copying skills, but drawing the subject from life will speed things up. I have seen some of your arm studies here and you chould should would take it alot further. I great way to apply anatomy knowledge, is to draw the subject from life (simple, accurate shapes) and then apply the muscles, connections, movements etc. This way you will go beyond the "symbols" and your drawings will end up more consistent.
It has been said before, and I'm saying it again. Clean up! Stop smudging. I know you can archieve good results with smudging if you do it right, but I bet my 2 cents that most of those artist who is getting good results that way, didn't start out with smudging. Focus on planes. Look at Wes' scetches. Look at Loomis' finnished drawings. They both have smooth surfaces, but if you look closer, you will notice how subtly their knowledge is laid out on the paper/canvas/whatever. They didn't learn that by smudging!
Do you have a kneaded eraser? Get one and experiment! Great for cleanups too. Do you have a mechanical pencil? Get one and push your patience up a few levels. If you want more consistent tones, stop using the side of your pencil for a while, and focus more one depicting the shapes and planes.
Lastly, your colours. What's stopping you!? It's definately not the medium. Using Photoshop is the most forgiving way to experiment woth colours. Just add a gradient here, apply a blending mode to it, and BAM! You got yourself a totally new pallette.

I'd love to write more, but It's late and I'm supposed to get up early tomorrow and clean my room exersise and all those things you should could would do.;)
See ya later.

Sorry for the bump with no pictures..heh... I just wanted to respond to n0fish's crit..
Dude... you definately don't bloop my party :D That was a very on point crit (or number of crits), they are all things I try to think about, but apparently I don't think about 'em enough, so I'll be focusing more again. I'm heading back to doing studies for a while (well... I'll probably through in some brainfarts as well..hehe). I really don't know why I don't go for adjustmentlayers, but I'll be sure to try it out... I think I get lost in "I gotta paint this thing, and if it's supposed to change; I'm gonna paint it!", but as you're saying, applying an adjustment layer and then painting on top of that might be something to go for. It's probably my own inexperience/fear that has stopped me from experimenting with colors in painter, but there really is no reason.. some digital artist (can't remember the name) said that "the digital medium is a totally consequence free enviroment", now I've quoted that dude, so I better practice what I preach.
In the last picture, though.. I was going for a predominantly blue/cold pallette with a few hits of warms (and ofcourse the ship), but bottom line is...would the image sell? And just that adjustmentlayer you put on made it more exciting to look at, so it was definately something to think about!
So bottom line; I'mma do some more studies, gonna try to change my pallettes around to see what the different effects/moods I get out of 'em are, and yeah... dude.. I'll clean up.. promise! ;)
And all of you regulars in here (some of you already kick me in the ass on a regular basis), but for the rest of you... kick my ass more! I'd like all of your thoughts on what I do.. of course, if what I've done merits a compliment or an asspat, I don't mind those either ;) But for the most part.. kick my ass as efficiently as n0fish did right there..hehe.. 'cuz now I really DID ask for it :D

Still not loving the color on the ship, but it makes more sense & works better now that there's more orange in the picture as a whole.

December 2nd, 2005, 06:58 PM
Hey! Hey hey hey!
The environmental work looks nice, though I mus say as well that the orange kind of a color of the ship doesn't quite tickle my fancies, somehow too colorful to fit in to the rest of the setting. And n0fish gave a good advice of using more of the colors, which you did good work with when updating the latest version ;).
The girl with the skeletal hood has great looks in it, good shading and very nice expression!! I like it. The torso-study looks great as well, but there's something that eludes me, somehow. I am not sure if it is the shape of the stomach area or the other hand, but something catches my eye that doesn't look so vivid =P . But all in all, very good work with all the updates!
Oh, and thank you for asking about the NWN mod. We are doing both fine and not so fine with it. We are in dire need of a scripter/coder, else we are jammed. But otherwise, things are going just fine. Can't wait to unleash the creation upon the World ;) .

Hi
long time since I visited your sb, but now I got a working computer and Internet -connection :teeth: so now I´ll make my comeback. Going to sit down and draw all day tomorrow:^^: . You got some nice stuff going on.... ok going to try to give some minor constructive feedback....
In your "goindown05.jpg" pic... I would suggest that you move the ?figure? in the upper window to the lower window....since I feel it disrupts the "eyemovement" (at least my when I started notice the figure) .... like I follow the smoke upwards then the ship downwards, but then abruptly up again because of the figure.... if it would be in the lower window or not at all.... I think my eyemovement would continue down in the direction set by the ship. Also it would put more sense of danger towards the figure. Did I make sense?
Keep going steady :yayca:

so..
Wow. your stuff is really awesome. I love how you do those human bodies, and those armory thingos aswell. Armory seems so hard to do, so many details and things and stuff, but it seems like you really got the hang of it!
Now, if I'm gonna try to give you any pointers that will help you, I think you should work a bit more on expressions. So many artists have this "dead" look on their characters. Might just be me, too much into cartoons and the like, but you might know what I mean?
I love that wizard!

'ello!
Ah yes, now the ship looks more....sophisticated by its colors ;) .
Forgot to mention in the last post, though, that the smoke that follows up from the engines to the bypassing ship...it's perhaps too solid, the smoke I mean. It looks too thick and material somehow. Try to add some opacity kind-of-an-effect to it, or scatter it a little around. It looks kind of a tube of black materia. Though I like how it looks now, but too solid for my eyes still.
Ooh, the creature design looks great, I like the very subtle looks of them. So many creatures and so good looking indeed, I just wonder how can you manage them all!?!

Hi
This time I just gonna write something cause I just want to fill some space eh? Anyway I know they're just colour roughs but they seems to only have two maybe three values and shading by using black or some variation within the same colour...try to darken using a dark setting of the complimentary colour instead. Maybe by using a low opacity and going over until the shade gets right or starting by creating the pallette you want to use. I think it would make the colours more interesting etc. anyway it's just me rambling about stuff I just started to explore as usual hehe . Well I'm off to bed so goodnight

Nice job! I actually still like the colored version better, maybe that'll just give me something to look forward to. I really like the shading though, and getting to see a slightly bigger version of the design.
I might need to show this to my kid sister, I'm sure she'd find it adorable.

Hey hey,
I think mentler has a point there. The far legs look to "atmospheric", try to make them stand out, you dont want just one bit of the animal to stand out, you want ALL of it to stand out! And maybe the two legs could be closer to the "standing out" ones. Overall as a picture, i like it. And you have improved loads ! :tihi:
Keep it up & ill be back!

Hola mi guen!!! merry freaking Xmas dude, you seem to be
getting some real hardcore creature desings man, keep working
on that process, now Im gonna find this thread that you said Mike
was running, I just got all curious; the desing for your waterlope
is looking good, myabe you could spice it up a bit by looking
at some shot of deers running and jumping and to make
a more dinamic posse for your creature, right now it looks to
static (and even tho I get you wanted a shot that was easy to read
maybe for a 3D modeler) I belive you can make it a bit more
natural in terms of weight and balance by looking at how some
four leged animals stand, I think you maked the legs to even,
animals do shift weight on their legs in a similar way as humans
do, you could do some experiments to find a posse that is good
readable and with a nice sence of weigth.
:P Not that I know how to posse an creature very well, this are just
some thoughts I cooked rigth now, dont forget your salt while reading
my posts he he.
see ya later and keep it UP!

The waterlope came out great, still waiting for those action gestures of it though, heh.
The last illustration is promising, I know it's still a wip but I have to mention it, the face of the spidergirl express fright rather than the nightmare-ish look I would've presumed. I got the impression that she woke up with those spiderleg-fingers and this is her reaction.

Happy new year! I see there's no rest for the wicked, you keep on pushing yourself. You're doing good. I like the portrait of your bro, i can tell he's related to you. :D I think you can push that digital piece with the spider lady a lot more. the foreground is about the same value as the background, and im not quite buying the foreshortening. You should also think about what parts of the image you want blurry and which ones you want sharp. it looks a little haphazard right now.
I agree with badger, i really like where your values are going in this last piece.

now, I would mostly focus on drawing from life and doing studies if I were you, I guess you've heard that one like a thousnd times already, but it can not be repeated too often. :) It would improve your concept drawings and your portaits, etc alot.
The painting above is quite good, especially the colours are nice, but for example his legs look very stiff. The anatomy is missing drama and so on.

I'm totally digging your sketchbook. I see what you mean about being a scribbler your's is taming up though. Nice Job. I love the new color scheme on the ogre orc thingy and the lighting is sweet. I see one thing on the gesture that seems off. I think the way the weight is shifted in his pose makes it seem as if the leg pictured on the right should not be touching the ground. It could be just me.
Mindflaw
January 2nd, 2006, 07:59 PM
Looking at your last one I think skapegoat got a point there. To me it looks like his weight is on his right leg and his left as skapegoat says not on the ground. Maybe extend the canvas a little and change the ground going upwards or put in a stone etc or remake the entire leg. Anyway been starting the enviro going very slowly though heh.

Nice update, I like the second one most,
Really like it alot actually.
The first one has pretty good lighting.
Though, What you need to do is to think of how much light that bounch from surface to surface especially when doing that kind of lighting scenario.
or maybe he has killed alot just recently, which made him sweaty?
That would ofcourse make bounching light more obvious and self explained, always take in concideration what material it is that you are trying to illustrate, and what it's conditions are.
Depth is pretty good to, the facial lighting kills some of it though.
But I am drawn to the facial area, which is a good thing, that is were the story is told, so I am half part wrong there, imho it is a lighting issue again.
The reflection on the most visible sword is wrong, think of how the surface in hand reflects, studdy the surface in real life.
This is only in my humble opinion,
cheers, and keep postin! :)

Re: Legs
The bulge of muscle/fat just above the kneecap is convincing, but it looks like it's more sectioned than it should be. There's a line about a third of the way up the thigh that needs to be de-emphasized, I think. Also, the kneecap should maybe be pushed a little more to the inside and should be a bit less circular.
The other problem is going to be tougher to fix. The left leg (his left, our right) looks like it's coming forward, while the right is pointing straight down and supporting the weight. But it looks like the left hip is higher than the right--which means the left leg is too long.
I'm picking nits because you asked for it :) On the whole (probably because of the lighting and rendering) it's a pretty convincing painting.

Can't go to GBG :[
Hm the westcoast shaman.... his stomach imho doesn't fit the rest of the character especially where the stomach ends at the (our) right. Heh he could have some weird silicon implant though...even a shaman wants to be pretty although pretty are indeed subjective.

Orc dude is coming along nicely... oh and to fill some space...The arm gadget construction works imo ... Are the bottom four leather rings attached to a thinner leather eh.. sock with holes on both sides under the rings on the arm? Hope you understood what I said couldn't find the right word. Are you to keep the brushstroke texture? Personally I like them with some tweaking here and there.
Have a great time in GBG

How long did you spend on that orc concept, a month? I´d never have the patience for that. Looks good so far, I like it. :) There´s something really scary about that spider woman from december 27th (and no, I don´t have arachnophobia), maybe you could work that one a little further. Your stuff is coming along nicely, I´ll come back here. Keep it up. :)

Dcept sir, good work/progress on the orc. Just a small crit, his left boot facing towards us seems a little oddly shaped. I don't know if you were going to continue working on it, but just a heads up. I'm loving the figures a lot. The looseness really suggests the form/shape of the models. I dunno why you wrote "crap" on this one: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/2dpics/Key1zZzZzJjJfxXsMall.jpg ...perhaps because it's hard to tell what kind of animal it is? Woah! You're still improving like a madman aren't you?
Shit! Those hands are looking great! Especially the painted one! Mad props yo! And I'm excited about that enviro! Seems like it's going to develop into something most worthy of solemn nods from the elders.
As for your girlfriend on the painting? Is that the same girl you had with you when you attacked me in Oslo the other day? heh.. Anyway, great painting. I love the hair.
Oh, and just to let y' know: I've been pretty busy myself lately too, even though I haven't posted anything anywhere in a while. Demand to see "the fortress" next time where hollering at MSN.

What do you get when you mix a mermaid and Bloody Mary?.. Your sketch. The gas station reminds me of the ones in Malaysia; because of the trees, vines, etc. The digi. of the girlfriend's done really well too. Have you thought about putting it in color? Just a suggestion because the gray background is dulling the piece a litle bit. But good work! Cheers!

Hey man, that last creature shooting the beam of light or whatever is pretty bad ass. The thing is though, i'm not sure if i'm right or not, but it seemed like you drew the head first, and it doesn't seem to fit well onto the body. Like it seems like it could be better placed onto the shoulders; as right now it's head is on his chest. yep, seems to fit you quite well. personally i'd say make yourself some custom brushes with abit texture to get more interesting results. also, try to think abit more in 3d,make cylinders instead of arms (f.ex.) and lay down a basic grey shading on these, and if it looks 3d already then, then start to work out anatomy and details. i'm just saying that because to me,this creature, while i absolutely love its design, looks really flat. you may want to increase the contrast on some parts, and put in some really hard edges. also i think the bg is pulling way too much attention(saturation),which also really flattens the piece. try putting more saturation into the creature instead, and keep the bg a desaturated green(or multiple). but i think the most important thing is probably the hard edges you yet have to put in,because personally i can't find a place to focus my eyes on really.
keep it up!
Lake
February 23rd, 2006, 11:44 AM
hmmm - look's like you're trying to emulate hurricane. that's ok; I am too.
I'd say that besides some anatomical issues that I'm sure you're already dealing with, the background's color scheme is way off. The large dark green patch sucks up all the atmosphere of the picture when used with the brighter strawberry color. I'd suggest something less saturated, like a cool grey or a warm, dark brown.

personally, I really like your pencil work. It's shown a definite improvement since you started, and you're still improving fast. One thing I'd say you should try is to vary your technique. If you're sweeping with your wrist instead of your elbow, try an underhanded pencil technique. Try adding in tons of tentacles and teeth. Try drawing some cute bunny thing. New stuff will make your old stuff better.
by the by, are you attending montreal?

Carnifex: Yeah I know... That's why I gotta think 'em through a little... Push it further.. :) THe smudging was both unintentional and not... I totally lost feeling with it, and I smudged some parts as I didn't have my eraser handy... and it just turned out like crap... hehe.
Pesmerga: Thanks.. and yeah.... she's hella nice! But then I would be biased.
Badger: Good points! I shall paint some more on it now!
panda: Thanks for your suggestions! Appreciate it! I don't think I'll be attending Montreal... I'll be going for Florence... you going there?
Storyboards... WIP, and photoshop fucked up my values and added some wierdass artifacts when I saved it... but nonetheless... hit me with your crits! I'll post a better version when I get it more polished without the stupidass artifacts...

On the first panel of the storyboard be mindful that line direction sculpts how the eye sees an object within planes of perspective. IE, slant the lines, cause it's not directly readable as an above shot.
12th panel is hard to fit in the story.
Otherwise really good emotion, i love the car interior, really nice suggested marks. Oh and on the 7th and 8th define the horizon line before i cry.
Nice progress on the lady! I love those little cast shadows!
See what shadows you can add to the hair to make it less hat like.
Good stuff though mate, your dedication is astounding.

Hey man, just wanted to show some respec'! More digi work? Dayam. Good idea with the assassin woman, just one little bitty crit, her head seems like it's going to fall off. The size of her hair combined with her head makes it seem a little weighty, like how the neck is a little thin. But other then that, things looking good. A little Sandmanpic? Appreciated!
What I began to think about concerning the assassin is her expression. It makes me wonder why she looks...hm, in lack of other words - stoned.
Her motif would be more clear if you turned her eyes towards the victim, 'cause I believe it's one of the guests in the ball-area(?)
Right now she looks surprised by swallowing something she shouldn't have.

I'm sorry, but your post has been bugging me lately. The digital medium will NOT make your art look better if you don't know the basics and have some control over your values. Sure, Hurri has got some pretty crude scetches and his digitals kinda makes up for it, but following his 'ways' won't make you look better. You seem to have fun - and fun is fundamental - but if you choose to stay at one point, you will be stuck there untill you move on. (Duh!) I don't know how far you want to go with your art, you sure have improved over the year, i don't know if you post everything, but I think you can go faster. It's not stressful, it just requires more work and some healthy frustration.
Right now your figures are flat and disconnected, you make assumptions on how the anatomy might look without researching, your heads needs alot of work (construction, proportions, modeling of the features etc.), hands, feet, line quality (imho has more to do with observation than anything), well, you get the picture. And try to work those values in properly as well. I know you can do it well, that charchoal SP looked pretty good. Dare to overwork and ruin some drawings. You may hate the results, but the experience gained is well worth it. I can sit for hours and render, tweak, curse and whine and an hour after finnishing it, i can pick it up again and realize there is alot of work left to do.
/jerk mode off.....i think..
Good luck with that Gerôme study. One thing I have learned from doing master studies, is to get the proportions right. This is the hardest par for me, as it doesn't show any pretty results before the rendering is applied, and well, it's hard and aggrivating to get those subtle lines correct. It saves you alot of trouble later on, though. Remember to work in layers when you render. Drawing with the side of the pencil wil help you cover big spaces quick, but you'll have to apply a cleaner layer to make it consistent enough. And whatch out for those edges. There is alot of hard edges in the study right now and they only reinforce the flatness.
Well, that's it for tonight. I hope I pissed you off...at least a little:P Good night!

fredrick you, you ass :D
i need to tell you some critique, to speak it, because i can't put it into typed words, hard to explain, but to make it simple, manequin + activly checking it while drawing and not just blindly drawing form = key to next step...
more when we meet up :P
cheers dude, progress is obvious!!

The portrait of your girlfriend turned out very well. I think it´s one of your best works up to now. And the enviro coming shortly after that is fine as well. Maybe it would get even better if you gave it a light source that is a bit more stronger. Therefore creatings darker shadows... but maybe it´s just a question of taste...

Lunch: Thanks for the continued support and crits on the poison-chick-piece! Update coming soon... forgot my wacom at Johannas place this weekend... hehe... so it'll have to wait a bit :P The sandman-inspired stuff was a direct result of me buying "A Game of You".. I'm completing my Sandman collection..one each month :)
Mindflaw: Thanks man!
n0fish: No sweat, man! I'm doing more anatomy again now after your post... it did piss me off a bit at first... I don't know entirely why... seemed a bit harsh at the time I saw it, but then I thought about it a bit, and I know you crit me as harsh as you do to push me on, and ultimately, I appreciate it. I guess you wouldn't switch to jerk mode if you didn't think I could take it... hehe... Thanks for swinging by, man!
Yoonjin: Hehe..yeah... I know... the chalks are rapidly developing into some of my favourite brushes... Using different papertextures with the chalks is fun!
hurricane: Bro!! I posted in your SB... we need to hook up soon.... I'm curious to see and hear what you have to say to me! Miss ya, man!
looky: We're not hard to get along with ;) Where in sweden do you live?
Erilaz: Thanks man! Appreciate it!
johnny78: I'll have to up the contrast on that one a bit, yeah... But like I said to lunch above here... I don't have my wacom for a week... so digi-updates will have to wait a bit... thanks for swinging by, man! And keep on rockin' the inks over in your own SB!
Some papers...

EDIT:
Here's a couple of really bad photos of two oilpaintings I did for my mom on her birthday... I was happy with 'em at the time, and she's happy with 'em, and that's the most important thing about 'em.. hehe... the blue one is of my brother and the other is supposed to be me... I f***ed that one up a bit, though... the one of my brother is the best concerning likeness.. and sorry about the glare, and they're all fuzzy and excuses excuses excuses... :P

I'll try to photograph a couple of my more recent oils and get 'em up... just gotta get hold a proper camera... the two above were photographed with my moms automatic compact camera...

Have you been studying faces? 'Cause they look way more solid now!
Those studies and paintings of yours seems to be exactly what you needed.
Keep them coming, if this is the progress you make by just doing a few studies I can't imagine where you'll be in as little as a month!

Thanks man, I can only say the same about you. By the way, do you get any free time do draw these days?
Or are you in Gbg every weekend? I know one doesn't get much done due to girlfriends :P
Looking in your sb, I remind myself that I have to do more paintings.

Wow!
That new digi-thingie is looking good!
Very cool wings and feathers! They look burning! Phoenix like!
Very cool concept! Looking forward to see it pushed further! =)
The pirate sketches are very cool too!
Keep it up!
Heh, and I'm thinking about your challenge too! Been looking at drops today. The plan is to start tomorrow, after I've modelled a celebrative St. Patrick's Pint!

Panda: Yeah.... the glowbrush is pretty cool... I'll see if I can make a rake-glow-thingy... I'll let ya know if I get it done..
Pencilator: Yeah... I draw all the time... she's got studies as well, so sometimes we sit and work together... works fine! Also I bring my wacom over if I'm staying for more the two days... and now she's addicted to the thing and wants to keep it...haha... Thanks for the props!
Shin-Akuma: Dood! Thanks for the kind words! I'm waiting to see that picture... I think it could rock!
Mindflaw: My brother doesn't only like planes... he lives and breathes planes... he's an airplane mechanic by profession, flies r/c planes as a hobby...he's getting a license to fly small aircrafts... yeah... that plane is his favourite.
Just a couple of papers... one brainfart and a small update on the Gerôme study... I attended a funeral today...my best friends mother... I couldn't get myself to do much today...

Sounds like it's been a bit of a tough few days. It was the anniversary of one of my best friend's death 2 days ago. It's a weird place to be.
Keep on with those brain farts, keep on with those studies :)
Howz the digi lady?
