Ohh, phantom of the opera, I'm still trying to find the DVD release.
The guy's forehead feels like it caves in a little too much. Other than that, lovely job, especially on the girl!

Dude - the last one is really cool. I love that eye - looks evil, tired of life, depressed etc - more sad than evil really, but still creepy. Great job. i agree a bit with look and maybe some darker shading under the nose to spice up the highlight.

Oh yes, very smooth and artistic outcome, the Phantom of the Opera indeed is.
Though the woman's chest might have some more features in it, looks kind of too flat, or then it's just my eyes playing tricks on me again :P I am glad to see the outcome, for it sure is artistic!! Great work.

Your traditional stuff is intriguing, as always, they always hold many interesting things and aspects in them. That is what I like in them, yes.

More to come soon, I hope !!

panda: appreciate the asspat :D

look: I'm kinda happy with the phantom. Thanks man!

Malavon: More stuff coming soon, dude!

Now... I haven't been updating madly lately, because there's been a few things happening that have... taken all my attention, and a lot of my energy for the last couple of days. So there is just this a4 from ref., but something that was stuck came loose when I did it, so I've got a couple more pages that I haven't scanned yet. So there will be more updates coming up shortly.

More, more, more~ *shouts madly*.

I love the update of yours!! Stylish shading and pose, especially the hair is very cool not to mention the wrist wrappings. I like the eyes the way they are, gives him a very intimidating and mad look, just the way I like it *huuurrmmm*.

Great to know that you have more workds to be scanned yet, excellent.
I myself have 7 new drawings done, I am just waiting for the moment to unleash them all upon my sketchbook. I have updated it since, by the way, you last commented there ;) , take a look if you dare.

Waiting forward to the new stuff, keep them coming, for they are HOT STUFF!!!

I was away for a few days, and I missed so much of your updates. :)
They all look nice. Although it'd be better with more contrast. I just learned something new over the weekend in the convension, one of my friend does all initial sketches with a red mechanical pencil, then go over it with regular black pencil. It looks great. The red lead doesn't smear as much and good for experiment and loose sketches, and the black stand out and good for details. I'll be trying that method out, and thought I'd share :)

Those inking on the last pieces are nice, although I think the white highlights are a little too strong.

hurricane
July 12th, 2005, 03:58 PM
yo dude, killer stuff... about what 'look' said, try to fade the highlights so the nearest part of the piece (if the lightsource allows it) will be the brightest white... so you budget the highlights...in relation to the depth... like on this one...check its backlegs, the yellow part is a highlight but its not brighter than the darker areas than the front legs... THIS ONE (http://www.rainysaturday.com/Hurricane/Illustrations/Animal11.jpg)

the digital ones, in some the colors get dirty...you should know that digital colors needs alittle bost, they dont blend as trad. colors do... if you remember what Leo said when he showed the guys the palette thing...

you're getting better and fast man, now you just need to tighten up and work the skills man !!

btw, on the kungfu pose, our left leg is off... either in depth or anatomy... i would check the ref if you're still working on it ! :P

panda: Very valid point! Thanks man! I'll keep my mind on that!

hurricane: 'sup bro! Thanks for dropping in and droppin' some cents ;)

So you're having fun with painter?

I love the ninja sketches! Some good ninja poses you've got there.
Keep them ninjas coming.

Actually, I think it would be cool if you made some more detailed ninja stuff sometime. You know... on a Japanese roof with a crescent moon and everything. Could turn out awesome!

Glad to see you're still drawing hands! You're getting good, but hands are complicated, and a serious matter that shouldn't be neglected ya know. ;)

heh, and the "what's crackalackin'" monster cracked me up! Gotta love them written notes on you leave here and there.

Now... I thought I should leave one little crit too, and it's not really a very helpful one, I'm afraid. Anyway, here it comes:
Sheaths and scabbards. I notice that when you draw people with Japanese style swords, the characters wielding them never have any scabbards on their persons anywhere. And... well.. This is only my opinion, but I think some scabbards would look nice for 3 reasons:
1. Scabbards look impressive. They just do. Even when the character has it's sword drawn, the scabbard(s) on his side and on his back makes the character look more dashing and impressive.
2. Sword maintainance. Because you know how those Japanese swords look up close, right? They're beautiful. Works of art. Imagine all the scratches and bruises they would get from lying around scabbardless. It makes me shiver, and the smith sure as hell wouldn't like it either. :P
3. It's a cultural thing. I think I'll just explain it with a quote from the good Musashi. ;)
When he was fighting Sasaki Kojiro, when he was wielding the oar, they fought on a beach. Kojiro drew his blade, and then threw his scabbard down on the beach. Musashi then said something along the lines of: " Are you so unconfident in your skill? Are you so sure of your death in this duel that you leave your scabbard for the waves to take it?".

So having the scabbard anywhere else than on you when you were fighting was a bad thing, at least in the eyes of Musashi. :)

Anyway... I'm rambling. Good job with the drawings! Keep 'em coming!

peace!

Edited for removal of too many smileys

great updates !!

some thoughts if you may :

1. you always seem to draw a whole figure almost exactly in the same angle... maybe try to mix the "camera" angle up, close ups... some times less is more (thinking about the amount of details or explanation in the pics)

2. nice digitals, good progress, some coins have dropped into the slot? :P

3. on the last one, explain to me (to yourself) how the light goes, wich area is extruding and wich area is going into the "depth"... ATM it looks like a cross, areas meet eachother depthwise very strange... i think you need to construct a background/middle ground/forground set thing......push the levels of brightness/contrast so the objects the closests or the ones who needs focus the highest contrast... like the iris in a eye... and give relative areas that has a purpose (like the bridge or what it is) lesser "focus"..

tell the story, don't sum it up... (oooh, very poetic :P )

/rant
anyways... a "hippie" rant hasnt killed anyone yet hehe....

keep on fighting !!

cheers

Maybe you can work a little longer on that last one to make it pop.
His shirt is a bit mushy, and you can exaggerate the planes of the head a bit more, for instance his cheek looks quite flat as well as the nose going into the cheek underneath the eyes.

the first digital in this set is your best thus far, I think. however, there's not really enough contrast between the guy and the background, at least I don't think so. I'm not sure why, but your brushes seem dry to me, or a bit abrasive. Consider using something more watery or softer next time? I dunno, just a suggestion.

try to find a balance between digital and traditional. All of your digital works scream "digital! digital! look at me i'm digital!" try to find some way to blend the two more seamlessly and your works will succeed much more. Also, try to think of how each one of your marks as you draw with pencil will add to the form of what it is you are trying to draw, don't worry about ghost lines and light marks that may make your drawing less "clean" use those building marks to build a better sense of form in your drawings. This is certainly something that I need to work on, but as I develop my own sense of form with line drawings I am trying to help others too, sorry if my advice doesn't make sense. keep up all the drawing!

wish I knew more about painting so that I could give you a more in depth crit. All I can see though is that the little "sections" on the tentacles are inconsistent with their size. Purty work though, I see you're experimenting with knocking limbs back by desaturating and lightening up the values. cool work.

The piece for Cow is looking very nice. The one comment on it is that the black fur doesn't seem to go with the Arctic Theme. The rest of it seems very fitting and it seems almost like an arctic displacer beast. :) good luck on finishing it.

BlackGuy
October 11th, 2005, 10:21 PM
the tentacle "section" sizes are still too inconsistent man. That's holding that piece back in my opinion. You see where there's blood on the creatures mane? Look directly below that and slightly to our left, those sections are way too small. I think you were going for perspective there but it doesn't quite look right. I think you should try to measure them out somehow to get them to a closer, more consistent size.

Great start to your SB. Your proportions are great, your work from life is your strongest. The two things that would really solidify your art would be working on cross-hatching and line weight. There are a lot of great books on line weight, but the real trick is to just practice like crazy. Getting better at cross-hatching is easier than that.

Start by drawing spheres, work on them til they are perfectly smooth, the more angles you draw your lines the smoother it will look. Then move on to stranger shapes but keep making them super smooth looking. Another trick I've done to get better is use just a typical ball-point pen. Ball point pens are completely not made for drawing nor cross hatching, so if you can master that you can do it with anything. I used to do it constantly on notebook paper, more specifically on my homework, science notes,or whatever random paper that was around back in my high school days.

Anyway, great work. Keep it up.

woah!
I really like the black&white digitals, did you do them in painter or photoshop?
Though you have quite a bit of knowledge, your pencil sketches could LOOK a lot better if youre lines were better...theyre all chaotic&uncoordinated...try to get steady, thin lines on the sketches (sharpen your pencil?), and shade using paralell lines (not necessarily all lines in your picture have to be parallel, but in every plane at least they should be)....this will tighten up your pictures in no time and having them looking a lot more IMPRESSIVE, and generally looking "nicer", without you having to learn very much!

cheers,
n.

on this one, you've visibly improved a great deal! I love the scales and the lighting. However, on the next few that you do, I advise you to stay away from textured brushes! they muddle up your outlines. Remember that although the light in the real world creates color without outline, there is still a visible end/start point for the edge of an object.

Hi d-C

Nice creature you've got there.
Tiny crit: I know the human is there for scale ref, but it looks kind of weird that he is placed on a different groundplane (perspective)
And I'd suggest giving him some townails, they would go well with the other pointy stuff :)

Back I am, finally!
Great to see you back here as well dCepT !

I see lots of new and interesting stuff on your thread that is now all of the sudden 8 pages long, seems to be that you've been busy as well, hidden from us , tee-hee-hee.

As always, it is awesome to see so much difference, variety and all the more new aspect in your drawings. Especially those disfigured and mutated creatures, they have that something ;). There's just so much new things here that I can barely comment anything reasonable, save my praises for you ;p .

I can only say that keep working and update regularly, so we can feast upon your works, eh ;) . Keep it up, dCepT !

really dig the figure drawings
the one with the girl leaning on the ladder seems to be the best
saw enough pictures of her to know what she looked like

panda: Yeah..you should make the next one! Europen, that is.. not sure if I can make the next american.. hehe... Thanks for the crits! btw: Your sketchbook is giving me trouble... a lot of the pics won't load... it's just stalls, sort of.. I don't have that problem with any other sketchbook... You're not using photobucket, am I right? Could it be the server you're using?

MorteM: Yeah.. I'm coming over to sweden soon! Won't make it to the croqui-session the 12th-13th, though.. sucks.. Thanks for the props!

buzzz: Thanks for the crit! I'll put the size-dude on the same plane.. hehe... The idea behind the creature was a mutated poison frog.. Hence the feet, but hey.. Spikey toes are a good idea! Might add 'em :D

Malavon: Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate it! Dropped by your SB, btw :)

daqu: Yeah.. that was the one I was most happy with :) Thanks, man!

Last two are really nice man, noticable improvement.
Poop went home and apparently the two guy next too him thought he was british, so maybe you can learn some tips from them. Though i know Poop and to be honest they were probably both deaf, to think that.
Anyway, look at a tinney bit of colour, that orange is very vibrant. though i like it subtle.
Wonderful values on the sketchbook page, you deserve a game of croquet.
Laterz man

Latest one is very cool man, one of your best i think.
Good textures.
Clear up the ground, use some ref if it's water.
try and give the guy some more basing, it's unclear what he's standing on.
Oh and it's gotta be a pretty funky light sourse to light the bottom of those near arches and the top of the rail to the same value. I'd drop the highlights that high up.
Sky is very nice.
I look forward to the development.

Hey! on this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/2dpics/BugCritterWeb.jpg) piece I suggest a little more variation on the scales. As of right now they are all close to the same size and shape. Try making them smaller on the more articulated parts of the body (near the joints) and bigger on the more static parts (chest, forearms, back of hand-area). Keep on truckin'!

great color pallette. he wizard guy looks spot on. the perspective of the bridge seems kind of off though. It could definitely use some good two point perpective in this scene. Also it might be cool to have an object even closer to the foreground, out of focus. It would add some more depth to the picture. Great work man.

Keep reminding me, man! Character isn't for the ChoW, actually.. It just appeared while I was doodling nonsense... The building is one I see from my window.

One more for today... I found the liquid inks..think it was Libor that put me on the idea.. I had NO idea what I was doing with these, but they were fun, seeing as how you haven't got total control over your lines when using 'em.

Wizard update is nice. The back part of the walkway that the wizard is on really solidifies the wizards placement in space. Those liquid inks are nice as well. I am unfamiliar with what that even is. Those are digital right? That's a cool effect.

spacemanchris: Thanks man! Yeah.. the liquid inks are digital.. Painter-brush :) Sometimes I just like slopping around with brushes I haven't tried before.

Gauge: Don't have to have balls for that.. hehe.. I'm just prepared that it might (most likely) turn out like crap at first.. but you find out of stuff that you might use later on if you just try. Thanks for dropping by!

buzzz: Hey, bro! Thanks for the props, and the crit. I know his forearm is all twisted.. I couldn't get it right, but I was sketching it late at night, so I didn't bother to check it out in a mirror :D I'll fix it if I take the character further, though.

blog: mmm... damn.. did we speak in Prague? Is there a picture of in the prague-pictures? I'm starting to get comfortable with a few of the painterbrushes, but like I said above.. I like to just try out different stuff.. might come in handy.. I'm diggin' on Painter, though.. probably because it was the first software I got and started painting in.

Qxzi: Thanks man! Appreciate an asspat any day :D Drop by again!

Soo... I went to Stockholm and visited Leo, MayaSan, Hurricane, Pencilator (aka Mr. Hugs), Lunch and a bunch of people not from CA for some croqui-sessions, so I've had an awesome weekend!
We did some sketching in the evenings, so I'm gonna post those now, and the croqui-stuff when I get 'em photographed.. did 'em on A3, so they won't fit in the scanner..hehe.

Its good to see you keep up the pace. I havent got any useful crits for you today, just a little nitpicking. That ogre's head could probably be a little smaller. Its a size thing, now he looks like a fat little goblin, with a smaller head he'd look like a big fat ogre. And there's something weird going on on the yellow leg of this last character. I think its the foreshortening thats not getting through to me, it looks more like he's låghalt. :P
