I think that first male figure you have there (4th picture down) is definately the best of your figure drawings...solid anatomy and proportion, some interesting line variation and a good sense of light. I like the one immediately following it too.

The first and third ones seem to have a fair number of proportional issues...namely the first figures torso seems too long and the third ones head just seems...off. I'm not sure exactly how..the ear and forehead looks too small...the profile of her far cheekbone might be too extreme. Of course, not seeing the model, who knows. :D

The girl in pink actually seems pretty decent anatomy and proportion wise. Interesting effect there...is that pastell over charcoal?

I really dig those gesture drawings too. Some good stuff there.

whats up 'tern. i like to see the amount of work as well as the variety. it think that your life drawings are your strongest at this point. i think that it might be a good idea to do a lot more drawing from life and maybe find a focus for your work, maybe a goal or unified subject matter. just keep rocking man.

work on finding the planes and geometry in the figure. The body does have some hard edges and I think you should bring that out more in your figure drawing. The bone and muscle studies should help :)

I hope you didnt find this offensive. I`ll remove it if you wish, i just had to make a little joke.

You have some really good life drawings, i think you should keep doing them, and remeber the things you learn while drawing. Use this knowledge when you draw from memory.

Keep rocking, and visit my sketchbook! :D

very kool stuff here man... you will definately kick my ass at this stuff if i dont buckle down and draw more. i can only offer a couple suggestions with your pix.

your heads in 3/4 and straight on seem to be taller than wider. bridgeman puts his in a box to simplify the idea of a head. this is not how i would recomend you drawing them but i suggest you look at the width of some of your heads. some of them are only off by just a bit and ron is always telling me that bit is what makes it look right or a little off.

i like the eye studies you are doing there are some great things there. the one with the mech style figure is the best and it reads really well. i recomend picking up VANDERPOEL's book the human figure it is a study of facial anatomy and other parts in a tonal approach which is the way we both are heading. its an awesome book. dover printed it and its cheap but if you want really good pix of his drawings look for the old hardback often found on ebay.

i can see the anatomy studies and Marshalls class paying off for you. i can see in the later posts accurately guaging the volume of the forms your drawing. kick ass stuff. oh and when drawing women (taped boobs or not) remember the breasts are at a right angle from each other pointing out from the body. if you look at a top down view of a ribcage and halve it with a line from vertebrae to sternum 45 degrees from both sides of the line the breasts should sit and face out. the only time they might look taped is when there has been a surgury gone wrong or they are wearing a corset or pushup bra to make the cleavage line.

the perspective stuff just needs to be done over and over again. HPX is the man at this but he studied it in school and when i looked through his old sketchbook in austin there are older pages with the grid lines he hurried me through. that means the pros used to do it that way too but now after doing it forever they can eyeball it. i need to do more of those too :)

your on the right track :) just look for volumes of the forms and you might want to pick up bridgemans constuctive anatomy for those knee studies. i found it very useful for studying arms and legs.

I like your reaper idea. As for the legs, they are too short! But it looks like you are running out of paper, so they may not fit on the page! :D

Try to draw a line straight down from the chin. It will help you balance the character. (not that your character looks off balance, just a general tip.)

I agree with Kazz man.... end of class doesnt mean end of lessons...

There is one thing that bothers me about this thread. Keep in mind that this is my personal opinion. I see a lot of empty spaces on these pages that could fit some random doodles... You are wasting trees and I was raised by hippies...

I see some improvement in your anatomy and forms as you go, but you shouldnt stop because a teacher isnt there to make you do it anymore...

I would keep it up with the anatomy and gestures. I'm still working on them myself and I've noticed that it really helps out. You can see an improvement in your later gestures from the earlier ones and if you keep working on them they'll only get better and better. Studying the muscles and how they react to weight placement and center of gravity can also help out in doing creatures and animals. Just keep practicing and keep trying new things man, you're doing good, keep it going.

hey thanks for the reply beatnik. i plan on doing some creatures for a change. i actually liked a few of the gestures i did. i just got into a life drawing for animation class this semester and its pure gestures. we also have to really exagerate and we can make the drawing more interesting by adding in costums and what not.

greeings unto intern from 'the gugg'...

Great work here in your thread. I'm really impressed by the way that you've posted the series of pictures of the murdered bert thing: It goes to show how much lighting can help out the look of a composition. The particular lighting scenario that you have developed, from behind and to the character's (ernie) right REALLY keys up the dramatic effect; making the oh so innocent natured ernie totally murderous--RAWK! (and) OH HELL YES.

bravo
and
cheers!

The aerosol can and the ladybug---Intern this series is REALLY psychotic and scary (same technique as ern)! The teeth? ha ha ha-totally WAcK! YOu should continue with this stuff (maybe turn it into a series or something)... It's so unexpected, psychedelic and over the top! (Cue: undead guggenmaneuver screech-cackle!!!!) Again, great work! Keep it up, eh?

The psychological impact is astonishing. Where did I leave my carkeys? Oh. THAT'S RIGHT--My shaving cream ATE them.

hey |intern, just realised i havent posted here yet, shame on me ^-^

there is some serious improvement going on here, those coros rule and im loving your life studies.

the only thing i can think of right now is that for your pencil drawings, try getting some darker darks in there, at the moment everything is around the same tone, and is making things a little flat and dull. adding some real darks would bump things out loads and make them alot more impressive.

awesome stuff, i'll be keeping my eye on this thread ^-^

looking forward to meeting you in san fran

Yea, the girl could use some work, although the rendering level is quite nice, the proportions really collapsed below the ribcage (really don't wanna curve inward much at all if ever). The arms are also really skeletal looking. You should try doing more thumbnail poses and figures.. it really lets you feel more comfortable and in control of proportions when you're working small, and drives it more into your subconcious. Keep up the good work.

Second. You have tips. You need to share. Especially with me as oils are my passion right now. So out with it. :D

Dude keep rocking it out, sucks that I didn't get to go, but next one in the US i'm going, and oil painting is looking sweet!!! It's good to see that your parents are involved in what you love to do, I wish my parents are like that. Good Luck with this year, I know your always getting better and better.

Fukifino_ thanks forest. the dark is a mix of burnt umber, ultramarine blue (these two make a nice blackish color) and a tiny bit of ivory black to darken it up a bit more. i might have the bg light or dark. dunno yet

Van- i only tip i have is one that jason gave me. dont be afraid to be think with your oils. he said before it looked like i was trying to use as much as possible so now im not being as conservative.

sok- thank man. ya it sucked you didnt go to the WS. i was really disappointed you couldnt come. hopefully your able to save for prague or something.

Hmm. Could you possibly elaborate on that? You were using too much oil and so now you are NOT being conservative? Im not understanding. :bashful:

The painting itself is coming along really great! But I'm a little concerned about the proportions...I noticed it earlier, but thought it might just be the way the shadows where going. Your arms look a bit long. But in that last photo, your head looks a bit small too. *shrug*

Cool stuff, |ntern. :)
I dig that last painting.. bet you learned some bout hands durin' the process.
You live in so cal, right? I'm trying to get a sketchgroup (not online) going with socal CA'ers, so it'd be cool if you could join up. Keep up the good work.

you've got a great variety of stuff here. Love your figure studies, the cave troll and the eye study on the first page. Your Darth Intern progression is very cool. It seems you really like the look of hard light. It looks great on the troll...but seems a bit white/cool on Darth Intern due to his warm surroundings....it's just a thought.

hey thanks guys for diggining up this thread and showing me some love.

odds ya i learned a bit about hands on my last oil. im beginning to have a fascination with hands and feet and eyes. i always stare at now.. kinda weird huh... k i'll stop the crazy talk

ya i live in southern cali. im living in vista, california right now (san diego area) but my home is in the oc area. anywhere close to either spot is down for me. i think phil holland wants to get a gettys trip going. im really down for that

plsangel - thanks man, ya i had a thing for the right side shadow because i was painting it every day for that painting. it was easier to stick with it while still working on that project but im trying to venture away from that now. im really trying to expand my knowlegde of the human form and structure. its on of my main focuses for now

thanks again for the time for digging up this thread. i have some new shit to post but my internet connection at my place in vista was giving me trouble on photo bucket so i'll try to post it tomorrow
