Hey guys,

Just a quickie...
What's the difference between a Thumb sketch and a Silhouette ?

In my book they talk about both, so both are not the same, but they don't show me the difference!

Hi,

You haven't told us much about the context in which these terms are used, but here's what I think of:

Thumbs = thumbnail sketches = usually small, quickly done sketches just to lay down the idea of how you want the final image to look.

Silhouette = a solid color/black image with no detail, as if you stood in back of a person who was standing on a hill looking out at a sunset, with light coming only from in front of him. He would appear to you as a solid black figure with no visible detail seen from your viewpoint. In the context of your book, it might be referring to an outline, filled or not filled with color/black.

Websters.com says (paraphrased):

Thumb - (thumbnail) synonyms include bare facts, diagram, draft, main features, rough idea, rundown, skeleton, sketch, synopsis, thumbnail sketch, study, summary,

Silhouette - definition - An outline drawing, especially a human profile, filled in with a solid color.
Synonyms include contour, form, profile, shadow, shape.

In web design, thumbs, or thumbnails also refer to small versions of a gallery image, or small snips of images displayed in a gallery. Usually the thumnail version is clicked to view the larger version.

In desktop publishing, thumbnails refer to the small version display of pages in a document, in order to see a lot of them on the screen at once, even the entire document if it's not too large for all pages to be displayed on the screen at one time.

:D

Well, I'm not a man (Jin = short for Jinny), but you're most welcome.

Using the dictionary and a thesaurus is a lot of help (thesaurus gives a list of synonyms, or words that have the same, or similar, meaning).

Try http://www.websters.com

Type the word into the Search field, then click either Definition or Thesaurus... or both.

Galo,

You have me laughing out loud, asking...

"did I hurt you?"

... followed by two smilies, one bashing the other. :p

Thanks for the laugh, and no, you didn't hurt me.

bash, bash, bash.
