Character of the Week #285
:medusachow:The Horror Survivor:medusachow:
Design the lone survivor of a bloody and horrific event (Horror Movie)
:right:DEADLINE: MONDAY 23rd APRIL 8PM GMT+1 (9PM British Summer Time):left:
Check your timezone!
This week, we would like you to create the sole survivor of a horror movie. The character design needs to show how they looked before the event and how they looked at the end. You need to think carefully about what events might have transpired, what location they might be in and what timeframe the event has taken place over. Also think about the type of person the character might have been to start with and what they are like after. How did they survive? Did they fight? hide? were they protected by someone else?
Your final image should be of how the person looked after the event, however the character sheet should include a before AND after sketch.
Can be any gender
Can be any time/setting
Must be a horror story
The character sheet must contain both before and after designs
They can be any age
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
Files must be named: CHoW#285_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow285final.jpg will not be accepted)
Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
Follow the brief!

Zombie movie survivor, here I come! And this time I'm finishing if it kills me.
April 15 Deadline?
(EOFN: Well spotted. Changed :) )
April 15th, 2012, 04:58 PM
Ha! Great topic.
This time, I'll make the deadline - I hope.
April 15th, 2012, 05:30 PM
hmm, cool topic.
I can't decide, humorously play off horror movie tropes or do something serious and original?
April 15th, 2012, 06:02 PM
So I know the character sheet generally has to show at least two views of the character (ie front and back, etc). Does the character sheet for this contest have to show two views of the "before" and "after" characters or just a single view of the "before" character and a single view of the "after" character? Thanks!
April 15th, 2012, 07:01 PM
Hi, the horror movie could be invented too or should be an existing horror movie?
April 15th, 2012, 09:26 PM
Going a bit Prometheus on this one. Wippywippy. :)
April 15th, 2012, 10:07 PM
Soul survivor or sole survivor? :P
April 16th, 2012, 03:38 AM
Dread_Reaper The character sheet needs to contain AT LEAST, the front and back sketch of the AFTER design and the front of the BEFORE design. You can however do a full sheet for both.
elephantīs stroke Try to think of something original as we're not looking for fan art, however you can take inspiration and themes from existing movies.
MasterTroglodyte lol point made :P
April 16th, 2012, 07:24 AM
little update :)
April 16th, 2012, 06:48 PM
one question, the characther must be alive? i ask this because, my idea was to make the character something like a ghost, that died in the incident, but because of the way he died he could not leave the world being trapped here in spirit, so as his mission is now to take revenge on the ones that killed him, i dont know if iam deviating too much from the briefing, or he could be like half death, or bount to this world by a machine, something on the likes of raziel from soul reaver, please confirm if i can continue with this idea or have to change it somehow
April 16th, 2012, 08:26 PM
Messing with ideas, need to shred him up a lot more and indicate what was killing people.
April 16th, 2012, 08:26 PM
I'd assume by reading the brief that a survivor would be alive.
April 17th, 2012, 11:38 AM
mcreation prepsage is right, the survivor has to be alive.
April 17th, 2012, 12:26 PM
Here's my idea.
This biker gave some randomer a lift. He turned psycho on her. Sadly for him, he made the mistake of damaging her bike. No one damages her bike...
Anyway here's my first scribble.
Hmm better go fix that arm length.
April 17th, 2012, 03:31 PM
I did want to try for an illustration, but maybe I should just draw her standing there instead?
April 17th, 2012, 03:56 PM
yay! jumping! omg horror!
April 17th, 2012, 04:04 PM
thanks eonf and prepsage, well had to change, so my new idea is a bride, who on the day she was to marry, who happens to have been at 06 june 2006 the door from hell opened in the church, killing everyone inside, and only her trough sheer determination, strengh and intellect, survived, the demons inside, of course that made a diference in her personallity, as she had to make everything to survive inside
April 17th, 2012, 04:37 PM
Inspired by the this little trinket called a Nazar which is suppose to ward of the curse of the evil eye. So my idea was some sort of curse that turns people into zombies, my character was a merchant who sold all sorts of trinkets and talismans, but now wears his merchandise (as well as other found talisman's) on his person. Believing them to ward off the curse which has claimed so many already, the before and after images are set over a period of months or even years, still haven't decided, need to work on it a bit more.
April 17th, 2012, 08:27 PM
I haven't decided what sort of catastrophe took place (I guess it will probably end up being a typical zombie apocalypse centered in a shopping center) and the only one to make it out alive was the old janitor/handyman, because he's just that badass.
April 18th, 2012, 12:18 AM
Ok, this challenges are kind of adictive! are a great way to organize the practice and to try different approachs and styles.
The idea here is that of a hunter ( nothing to do with the northern hunter!:wtf:) that is saved by an animal from the attack of a zombie, so after that he ends up being an activist fighting for the animals, he will change his mind, his clothes, his attitude to life in general. He will use a ifaw tīshirt or something like that.
A little bizarre idea maybe but i donīt care!jeej.
edit to upload an update.
April 18th, 2012, 07:02 AM
nice topic.....just sketching
April 18th, 2012, 12:14 PM
here's a wip - thought I'd go with an athlete... cheers all :)
April 18th, 2012, 04:36 PM
Before and after. The prissy civilian has to buck up after the zombie apocalypse or face a painful agonizing doom.
And I cleaned up the sketch for inking. Something still feels odd about that sky line.
April 18th, 2012, 05:25 PM
My first though was to make character Bruce Campbell like from evil dead :)
But than i decided to go with more peasant like guy inspired by old school game Redneck Rampage, loved mod in these game :D
Nice works every ones!
April 18th, 2012, 06:48 PM
hey all! first time posting for CHOW! I'm excited about the topic and hopefully I will be able to get this done before the deadline
Its a luchador! So these are mainly WIP-'before' pictures and I'm still deciding on a story and how best to illustrate it in a single final image.
I'm thinking vampires:)
April 18th, 2012, 08:13 PM
awesome work everyone! love the ideas im seeing!
heres a rough design sketch..
April 18th, 2012, 08:57 PM
Somewhere in eastern Europe, a plane crashes into a forested mountainside. As luck would have it the survivors are only a couple of miles from a small village, visible at the bottom of the valley.
The rag tag group salvage what they can and gather together for the trek, little knowing what awaits them. A distant howling prompts 'they've GOT WOLVES here?'.
Our erstwhile survivor is an arrogant, wealthy, indolent waste of space who soon learns a lot about himself.
April 18th, 2012, 10:32 PM
Where I'm at right now, a goth teenager that went military radical, loosing a limb in the process.
I may change my mind and go totally overboard with the 'after' design, instead of this conservative one.
April 19th, 2012, 12:04 AM
@JBurrough, i dig your idea
@krAtul the same, very interesting.
Very good stuff in general.
So i changed the design to have more contrast between the before and after.... a more radical personality change.
I like to see the process of designs, so here is mine so far. I like to do a lot of sillhouettes but i rarely end up using one and like in this case i end just sketching something and thatīs it.
Any opinion about how to improve the design or the process will be great.
April 19th, 2012, 12:22 AM
Gah... we'll see if I can finish one.
April 19th, 2012, 05:50 AM

Thought an "End Is Nigh" Homeless guy predicting and surviving a zombie apocalypse would be kind of cool.
Here are my initials.
April 19th, 2012, 05:12 PM
Here's more WIP!
It's vampires, I'm thinking either a rival luchador or a loan shark. And they've murdered his family and he's out for vengeance.
This is the after picture. His signature is that he always has a rose in his mouth when he fights. He's equipped with a garlic necklace, his wife's rosary and two wooden stakes. I'm still debating whether I should add his child's blanket, it seems like too much but I feel like it gets the idea across that someone he's close to was murdered
April 19th, 2012, 05:32 PM
little bit of an update...
im not sure if this is gonna be my before, or my after... well see.
April 19th, 2012, 06:28 PM
April 19th, 2012, 08:59 PM
im gonna call this version finito bandito. gotta work on the before version now...
April 20th, 2012, 12:16 AM
A bit late,...might not finish,...although I'd love to!
April 20th, 2012, 11:15 AM
This is my first CHOW. Starting a little bit late on, so I doubt I will get this finished. We'll see
So my idea was something Blair Witch-esk.
Couple of teenagers out camping, or having a party and 'something' starts picking them off one by one.
This young girl, is the sole survivor, hiding where she can, and using the open weapon she could find- a tree branch.
April 20th, 2012, 11:22 AM
here is the 'before' shot of my character... boring, everday business man...
April 20th, 2012, 01:24 PM
sketch. dont think ill have time to finish
April 20th, 2012, 03:55 PM
working out ideas. Other than a few portraits of my daughter I've never drawn a little kid before, so this is a little frustrating. I was thinking more like "Newt" from Aliens, rather than "Survived due to being a badass"
April 20th, 2012, 04:49 PM
If there is one thing I learned after reading World War Z is that you don't want to have weapons that produce loud noises. So I decided to go with a female who uses an axe and who also uses a handgun with a suppressor for warding off hostile humans.
Time to get to painting now that I'm done with the concept stuff. Keep up the good work guys :D
April 21st, 2012, 05:11 AM
Cool transformation from nice girl to badass. I got similar associations.
Cute children is a good component of a horror movie. I know how frustrating it can be to draw, but I think you done well.
I think you have a solid ground to continue
vigorously pictures One can imagine everything has gone through. The colors and the light feels horror advantageous
I think you have conveyed spirit. At this point I think you should look up some refs to go further with her hands and legs.
April 21st, 2012, 03:27 PM
Good stuff from eveyone.
April 21st, 2012, 04:12 PM
Straighten up the linework a teeny touch and added the first colourhttp://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss245/DonReek/CHoW285_DonReek-1.jpg
April 21st, 2012, 04:39 PM
Ok, iīll need a little more time for the final presentation, but since is a little overkill what i did (i couldnīt stop drawing really).
the history is simple, Dylan had a gang, they were hunters and some criminal stuff now and then.
One night they went to hunt, but they were hunted instead... the gang is anihhilated by a zombie "living" in the swamp.
Suddenly a cat saves dylan from an painfull dead. From that moment, Dylan changed 180š his attitude to life and he adopted that helpfull cat wich he called "jazz" honoring the music that he now listen all day long (before he was more a heavy metal dude)

I wanted to pay homage to the 50s Sci-fi Horror genre, so I came up with this sketch.. Yes I know it's probably too late, and I won't finish, but meh, it was fun P:
The basis of the story is, we have a future world (in the style of 50s/60s Sci fi) Our surviving character is a police woman, in air surveillance (via jet pack).
Suddenly an alien plant life form that has been cultivating under the surface of the earth bursts through, and starts attacking people.. It is spread across the world and it takes the form of razor sharp vines that blindly move and cover everything.. upon coming across a living object, they either pierce the skin, and absorb all the blood - 'feeding' or they eject a black tar like substance into the blood stream, which puts the victim into a delirious killing spree - where they will kill anything on sight, after a couple of hours the victim will then die. My heroine is armed with a machete (after all what else would you kill plant with) and a fire blaster.. She has nearly been drained before, but has managed to cut the vine and pull it out before it was too late.. hence the pierced holes in her skin.. well that's about it for now (: I shall upload some thumbs for the composition later..
April 21st, 2012, 05:34 PM
O.K. here's my ortho.
April 21st, 2012, 06:36 PM
I need help! I've blocked (very roughly) 4 thumbs.. anyone wanna give me opinion as to which would be most interesting whilst showing off the character?
EDIT - now including final character sheet, and I went with 4.. here's the first sketch (:
April 21st, 2012, 07:21 PM
