I think this is very interesting. I find myself wondering how much to read into the various elements as symbolism. Like, is it important that that's a swordfish? Or just a fish. Then there's the directions they are facing. Or maybe you just want that to be a generic underwater environment. I like the painting of the face. I think the sketchiness is consistent with the idea of being out of place. I also wonder about the decision to have him looking at us. I guess I read that as him trying to relate.

Your questions have rather simple and non-deep answers. :)
It is important that it is a swordfish and a mussle cracker for no other reason than my brother will recognise them. He is a spearfisherman and has had close encounters with both types of fish. I wanted them to be larger deep sea fish rather than say umh gold fish or Koi. These fish can easily grow to be the size/weight of a man if not larger.
I made the fish point out and in because it made my eyes swirl around in the painting, moving from swordfish to mussel cracker to human in a sort of circular current.
My brother is a kind of an alienated guy who would sometimes rather kiss a fish than talk to a human. I am sure he wants to relate sometimes. On the otherhand I he were facing the otherway I would just be painting the back of his head ;)

I like this very much, mia, and despite not knowing your brother, he looks the way you described him (not being too much friends with anybody). The execution of the painting is loose and still consistent. What disturbs me is the spot of pink in the swordfish's mouth - is it meant to be a tongue or just an accident?

thanks jester, I think a sword fish has a pale mouth, not sure about a tongue. I thought he needed a bit of pink in his mouth to tieup with the human colours so no it isn't an accident. They are carnivores so it could also be leftovers from lunch :D
