View Full Version : Chris Anderson's Sketches A Day
Chris J. Anderson!
May 27th, 2004, 01:00 PM
This is my first time really checking out the daily sketch book section. There's a lot of inspiring work in here.
I decided to kick my own ass to better my art skills by forcing myself to do at least one quick sketch a day. I feel I've been slackin in some areas of art, so this way, even if I happen to not accomplish anything too important in a day, I at least do one sketch of something, and learn something.
I'd greatly appreicate all crits and comments that anyone can give me. Rip me apart, I need to learn as much as I can.

I did this yesterday, it took me about 30 minutes. It took 15 to get down the composition and figure, and another 15 playing around with paint techniques to see what works. Kinda dorky, I know.

I did this one today. It took about an hour. I learned a lot more about how to approach faces quickly, I created his face in about 25 or 30 minutes. The reason I'm thinking about time is because I'm trying to get more acurate with my approach rather than spending weeks trying to figure out something.

I got tired of this one and quit. But I thought the paint marks where interesting. Created a little movement. I got lost at the color stage.

Hey Chris,
I'm probably the last guy to rip apart speed paintings since I so rarely do any myself. As for the piece you did today. The rim lighting on his body would work better if the background were a few values darker than you have it now. What did you do to get that background texture on the first painting? Is that painter or PS?
May I should open up my own sketchbook thread.

hey chris, glad you decided to start a sketchbook. because you requested it.. i ll do my best to give you some areas to work on in your art. in the first painting, i see a couple of anatomical problems. ..one being the twist of the neck.. .its not possible to turn your head around that far, and also, his right arm seems out of place because of the angle of the body. ..i think it should hide behind the figure more. on the second piece, i dont get a strong sense of mass and form. .. it think the figure should be rendered out more and the light and dark areas established better. i know these are quick sketches, but breaking down your lights and darks to establish form is one of the first steps in painting. im not sure about the third one, but because you gave up on it, i ll leave it be.. . and i think its a little too early in the process to crit. anyway, i really dig your technique and style of painting, i just thought i would give my 2 cents.. ..even though your work owns mine.
i hope you keep this going.. . .too many people start sketchbooks and let them die

Groover - Yeah man thanks. I'm gonna try to keep this going. THis is pretty fun.
Eric - thanks, I agree about darkening the background a tad to make the rim lighting better. I was struggling with the armor in that one. I used Photoshop.
Josh - Haha.
Metal winds, your right, I exaggerated the anatomy a bit too much on that first one. I have to try and tone that down, I have a habit of doing that sometimes. Your correct about that second one. I struggled with that, I was tempted to trash it half way, but tried to salvage it. I kind of lost focused in some areas. Thanks for the crit.
Obid - Yeah, I'm trying to get better at the first stages of painting. When I sit down for a week on a painting, I feel it's easier to make it all work. But when it comes to getting things down precisely and quickly, sometimes I can do it, but sometimes it's difficult to focus. I'm trying to coreect my focus.
Dan the Man - Thanks for the compliments! And thanks for checking out my stuff. I saw you thread and I was like, well daaaang, he's already taken over. Great and insipiring work man. I'm forcing myself to keep this thread as long as possible to push myself. I figure I gotta learn something more about 'focus' for quick paintings doing this.
This is good to get these crits. With each sketch and crit, I'm gonna try ot let the info soak in my mind and use it in each new sketch. Usually when I'm focued.

I didn't have the right focus today, I apologise. Here's a quick line sketch. I concentrated mostly on the drawing, and then simple color method.

May 29th, 2004, 02:18 AM
some really cool stuff... the girl in green/orange is my favorite-although i have a suggestion, if you don't mind- the backlit effect on her leg is really cool, but is that where you want the focus of the drawing? i would think it would be more on her face or upper torso, or if you wanted to keep it on her leg, then continue it up to guide the eye along the form and direct your audience. just my two cents
I really like how your style doesn't feel forced at all, just a flow of your personality....keep it up!

May 30th, 2004, 12:25 AM
Your sketchbook is lookin very cool. Your last dump especially, the green girl is definately your strongest post so far. I like it becasue the pose is dynamic and the colors are simple, but I agree with cotron in the sense that I think a bit of that highglight on her upper half would really make her kick. But the drawing itself rocks, the lines are nice and loose.
And your Megaman brought back a whole flood of fond memories of the hours shared between me and my old SNES...*tear*
Keep em' comin!

Van - Haha, still drawing.
Matt - Thanks man.
elboy - Thanks a lot. I'm trying not to over work and just let the paint marks happen. I'm glad you like the green chick. I wasn't sure what anyone would think of her.
Cotron - Hey thank dude. I see what your saying about the backlit effect. I agree, it probably would have worked better with the upper torso being backlit to add more focus in that area, etc. I think I was too afriad of messing up the face sketch. I'm glad you like the paint style, I'm trying to loosen up more.
Keepiru - Thanks. Haha, hey man, did you hear about the new Megaman Aniversary game coming out this summer? It's got all the megaman games all on one disk, can't wait ti buy it.
Retinal - Thanks.

hey chris,
i really love your quick style, the megaman pic is awsome. i was wondering if you pick a color scheme and have an idea of what the picture is going to look like before you start? or do you just start sketching something.
-oh, that apple looks delicious;)
Chris J. Anderson!
June 1st, 2004, 05:40 PM
Thanks Dingo - When doing quick sketches, sometimes I have an idea and color scheme of what type of picture I'm doing. But most of the time, I have no clue, and what ever happens as I draw or paint, happens. Which is my BIG problem with random quick sketches. I usually don't have a clear clue what I'm creating. I'm so used to thoroughly thinking about creating a time consuming piece that I'm still not very used to quick stuff. I try to do my best with quick sketches without any reference, very vague idea in mind, and usually within an hour. If I gave myself at least 5 hours, I'd have something more ot my liking. But So far, one hour quick sketches is my greatest weakness, I hope I get better.
I'm going to start working on a three week illustration this month. I want to see if I got any better with long term illustrations compared to one hour quick sketches.
Actually, it makes me wonder...is speed and accuracy ultimately more important? Masters like Rockwell and Leonardo, Bougouerou, I'm sure they took time with their great illustrations and paintings. Some took weeks. Others took months depending on how massive and/or complex the peice. I know in the concept art world, speed is essential. But for big and complexed, beautifully finished peice of work...is it? Perhaps it all depends on the job and the purpose of the art.

Hey thanks guys. Man, I'm glad you guys are liking this stuff.
ALRIGHT! break time with relying on line and graphic shapes is over for now. Time to get back to more rendering. I worked on this a little bit yesterday, and finished it today. I spent about 4 or 5 hours on this one. I wasn't suppose to but I'm not very fast with detailed rendering yet. Plus I forced Bouguereau to teach me a few painting techniques to learn a bit more with photoshop painting.

Nice paint Chris. Now we have to match your "quick drawing" with your "quick painting". The beautiful paint out weights the structure and form in terms of anatomy and stylized anatomy. But I'm sure you can see more fault than even I could point out.
All in all. Great study.

artkitty - Thanks, that last one was fun. I think I'll do an asian chick next. Some of these are defult PS brushes, and some are custom made. The default brushes, I manipulate the settings to get different effects.
Yina - thanks alot.
Groover McNab - Thanks, I'm glad you liked the way the color turned out. I was gonna do something more bright, but I decided to go this route somewhere in the stages. I'm glad it turned out okay.

Hey, if you guys think these are good enough for a work WIP, I'll wip one up.
Chris J. Anderson!
June 7th, 2004, 05:56 PM
Here's a WIP for Kara, the girl with the pink background.
First I started with a pink canvas. Then, in the second panel, I began using different Photoshop brushes to build a textured canvas look. The third one is the final canvas. I treated this as if I was working with Oils watered down and soaked with Turpentine, and wiped down with a scraggly brush.
http://www.chrisjanderson.com/Forumimages/Kara_step_1.jpg
From far away, some areas look like real brush textures. But if you look closely at this image below, it's just different noise brushes spitter spattered many times sparatically on different opacities and different sizes, along with other brushes. The key is to make it look as natural as possible, by painting naturally as if you would with oils, etc.
http://www.chrisjanderson.com/Forumimages/Kara_step_2.jpg
Here I scribbled in loosly the character. Again, I treated this as if I were using Oils watered down with Turentine to scribble in the lines. I created a brush to sort of (try to) simulate the randomness of line. Then in the other two, started glazing down some color.
http://www.chrisjanderson.com/Forumimages/Kara_step_3.jpg
After I glazed down enough ideas for the color and value, I started to use thicker brushes, and adrker colors, brushes with different textures, applying the medium down the same way I made the textured canvas. Painting with different textured brushes on different opacities.
http://www.chrisjanderson.com/Forumimages/Kara_step_4.jpg
Applied more details here, trying to keep focus with using the photoshop brushes as if they were real oil brushes on canvas to see how close I could make it look to traditional paint. Whether or not I did come close, not sure, but I was liking the effects happening. I then fixed the head on the last panel, I thought it was a bit jacked up and squashed before, which made me realize just how much I lacked in drawing in this one.
http://www.chrisjanderson.com/Forumimages/Kara_step_5.jpg
I learned a lot from this so be able to do much more with my current illustrations.

excellent work and a warm welcome to the sketchbook thread. Your work rocks the house and now it rockin' this house. A little while back you said something about speed versus rendering. You concluded with how it depends on the job but I think both parts are equally important in everydrawing. Some of the best marks come from the spontaneity of quick drawing, you end up with forms that would never appear without having thrown them down. I can't think of a finer example than Jon Foster. On the other hand, you can then sit down and render a quick sketch and come up with something really unique, which is i suspect how Lukias comes up with his beautifull draws.
anyways it looks like your looking at it both ways. Being able to achieve a happy medium bettween the two is a great skill.
Thankyou for putting up the tutorial as my digipaint skills are nil.

Coolness. I love your style! You exaggerate things and they still look spot on. I have a question though, do you add noise to different parts of the pic, or are those just custom brushes creating the noise effect?
Eric UNSL
June 12th, 2004, 12:28 AM
I'm curious too. What are you doing to achieve that grainy look? Been trying to figure out a way of doing it with different layer settings and opacities but no luck so far. Got me stumped chris. Nice work by the way.
Chris J. Anderson!
June 12th, 2004, 12:57 AM
Thanks everyone.
Groover McNab & Eric UNSL - Yeah for that chick and other paintings with this more simplified color look, I used the noise filter to give me some grain, I played around with the filters option a little, and played around with it more on the painting after I applied it to make it look a little less computered. On other paintings, some times I don't use the noise and instead, modified brushes that give me different types of grain for a different surface texture/tool texture look. Sometimes don't us em at all, and try to create texture through paint opacities.
Yeah it took me a while to figure out why photoshop with default tools and a blank document looked so slick and waxy with no grain like you have in reality. Photoshop was pissing me off with it's slick, flat, no 'surface grain or texture' look I was getting when I first used it. Felt like I was painting with crisco oil.

Groover McNab >> Yeah, thats an anteater, gettin ready to sip his ant tea. I'm glad you like.
Here's a figure drawing sketch. I know I could have when further with this. It took an hour all together. I may go in and really detail the hell out of the face or arm and hand, torso area, at some point.

Thanks for the complements everyone. And Gaboartpage >> Wow, thanks for the big response. Very much appreciated.
I'm really thankful for all the responses and crits I've gotten. Thank you for liking my work. However, I don't feel that I have really progressed at all since my first post. Compared to other artists that I've compared my work to, my skills in art are rather mediocre, quit limited, and I feel foolish for not being as good as I should be at this point. I've learned a few PS techniques here, but not much else, which really doesn't do much for actual skill level. So I see no more reason to continue these sketches here, time to go back to my cave. But with all that said, still, it was fun. Good luck to the rest of you, keep up the hardcore works.

I was checking out your sketchbook and remembered I've seen your site before, Always thought your style was very cool. Stylized and unique. From the stuff on your site to what you're showing here, your digital stuff is looking better and better. Keep on killing it and thanks for showing the demo steps.
