View Full Version : CAOS: Attention All Concept Artists from AUSTRALIA:
Form

Hey guys.
Its time to get a serious australian community for concept art together.
Ive made it a mission this year to organise an NPO for local artists - ive tentatively negotiated the possibility of an Australian Concept Art workshop, and the more people who get interested the easier it will be to organise activities, sponsorship and so on.
If you want more information or to get in touch with me, please PM me here. Also, please spread the word and feel free to PM me on behalf of friends or any people you now who may be interested in concept art, or any related art.
My email is form_n_focus@hotmail.com, im on AOL as form n focus and msn, as well as in the mIRC channel fairly regularly.
Speak to you all soon.

I might be a little on the stupid side but NPO? Non Profit Organisation?
I've loosely been talking with a dude who was at Enmore Design Tafe and it sounds like there might be people there who would be interested in a workshop. I'm definately interested!
Just a thought

technically a "Not-for-profit organisation". In other words, people will pay for stuff like the workshops, but myself or any other administrative persons would not make any momey - all revenue goes back into funding the organisation.
When the org is up and running ill give you a website or some such to direct your friends to.
Until then feel free to distribute my contact details provided you trust the people not to spam me.

I reckon this is a great idea...
So you want people to PM you to get an idea of how many people would be interested?
Can you give us a bit more of an idea of what you envision for the NPO? For example, would it be just a way to organise and facilitate events like an Australian Conceptart.org Workshop or would it also be used to organise a community (like in the Sydney community thread).
I'd like to get the word out to some people but I just want to be able to give them a good idea of what's going on to get them interested...

ok man
the NPO can go as far as we take it. Of course the larger and more serious it gets, the more involvement will be needed. it really depends on how many ppl are interested!
It will probably involve:
*Australian Workshop
*Other workshops/annual/biannual conferences with guest speekers and school reps etc
*A discussion forum (will not 'steal' members from CA)
*A database of contact details
*Schools and job opportunities
*A method of arranging meetings between members
*An official membership - which means stuff like probably a membership card which opens the possibility of discounts, future promotions, cross-networking, and eventually advanced standing on job apps due to affiliation.
Much more, so on.

I'm with nil, Anything that gets a workshop into the asia-pacific area gets my vote!
If we could somehow trick the concept guys from weta into turning up. That would be cool.

Hey! I'm glad my bro frequents a lot of threads on CA, or I never would have known about this! I moved to Oz over 4 years ago and it would be a major boost to have something like CA workshops and NPO down this way.
Last couple replies in this thread mentioned WETA workshops... we're going to be having the Film Fantastic event here at Robina Towncentre on the Gold Coast from the 5th through to the 8th of Aug.... and WETA is going to be there and there are going to be several workshops along with ameteur short films etc. Promises to be VERY beneficial artistically speaking. :teeth:
I'm definitely all for a CA in Oz.. starving for some kind of artistic community around here, especially within the realm of concept art.

What sort of venue is suitable? What sorts of venues have been used in the previous workshops?
Form
August 10th, 2004, 09:31 AM
Priority requirements:
Power
Air Con or the ability to cool it down
Capacity for 100-150 people
Able to do messy art in there (cleanable - implies cement floors probably)
Doors that will fit stuff like easels thru
Location accessible via public transport from city (not more than 20 mins out of the cbd preferably
Secondary requirements:
Natural light
Cost
Location (near cool hang outs)
Oh and it has to be in sydney O_o

I don't really have any specific suggestions for locations. Maybe art schools or universities would be a place to try- they'd all be on holidays in January so the rooms should be vacant.
I'll try and find out if there are any places like the one you're describing that anyone I know has access to.
Apparently my drawing teacher has (had?) a studio that overlooked Central station- I don't know how big it is and all that but I could try and find out.

i will try contacting cofa - that space would be damn near perfect as long as they r willing to lease the space...

I'm working on getting space at UTS and I've got a few other contacts I'm going to try. So I'll keep you all updated. There's no way in hell I'm going to give up on an Australian workshop.
I'd try UWS but the location is crapy but they seem desprate for money atm(no offense to anybody out West but it's an hour train ride from Sydney).
sOOlaco: Welcome to the boards, post more often. Who's your brother?
Marcatili
August 13th, 2004, 01:44 AM
hey yeah...UWS...
it's got air conditioning, art spaces and it's 5 minutes from cool hangouts, i.e. my house! there's also three local parks with slippery dips and everything!
meh...typical north shore, eastern suburbians tryin' to keep us westies down...
but seriously, i'd rule out UWS for sure...who wants to come all the way to Australia to hang out in Penrith?

Hey Form, lemme know if you need any help with COFA organising. It'd be good to have there in the painting studio space, F Block level 2 or 3. Though I don't think they have airconditioning.
Though the location is great, so many pubs and bars to go to and just a busride to the beach. :D

thats wat i thought- cofa is perfect!! its hard fo me to get into the city. reckon u could talk to some ppl there for me?? Just get an idea if its feasable/???
Marcatili
August 19th, 2004, 10:23 AM
I thought COFA was perfect too....I thought you went there form...i thought maybe that was the place that was jerking you around.
Just for the record, one or two other suggestions...
Art galleries...does the Gallery of NSW allow booking of artist rooms?
Any artist run spaces in Sydney anywhere?

On monday, I'll go ask at UWS, they'll most likely say yes and it'd be good to have a backup, even if it isn't perfect. I'll also go ask at COFA too. I mean, with more than one person asking, and not being from the school, it will help them know that we're all serious. I'll also go ask at the local galleries about similar locations people have used that might be feasable...........we're not about to give up yet. Depending on what you really want to do, we could probably get a warehouse for free but that could be roughing it :) If anyone can trek along, just PM me :)
Post my report on Monday afternoon....... and if that fails, there's always my backyard...... I'm up for it ;)
oh, 3demon here, just changed names :)

in terms of it being a major workshop, i think so. i mean really for massive black its just a counterproductive thing to do in a country that costs in excess of 2000 dollers to get to.
i think mg want to keep the major workshops in the US and europe for now (which is fair enough too).
However there remains the possibility of a smaller workshop like the one in berlin. Flying out 3 or 4 instructors is nowhere near as much of a logistical nightmare.
Australia is a very litigous place and hard to organise events. ive asked for help finding locations and so on as it is impossible for me to do it alone.
its up to us to present a plan of action to the instructors we want. if we organise the thing, they will come to us.
im sorry if people got really excited about it. I know i did - at one point it was thought very seriously that sydney would be the next major workshop but the logistics of it proved just too insane to make it happen (especially considering 90% of the attendees would be americans paying 2 grand to fly out here).
Hope you all understand.
Adam.

Sorry but Im a Newbee, and I'm curious as to what a workshop intails? I'm assuming that its place to hone your skills, but would I be right in saying its a school but with a smaller amount of students?
Cheers (And sorry for my lack of knowledge)
