Haven't posted a thing in a long time. Need to start again. Here is something from a tutorial I am writing for the book I am completing. Can you guess what the tutorial is about ?

Why Photoshop and not painter? I've never been all that comfy with painter for some reason so I stick to photoshop but out of curiosity more than anything I'd be interested in knowing why you picked photoshop over painter....most people lean the other way for painterly work.

Great work by the way, I've been an admirer for some time...

The reason for Painting this one in Photoshop instead of Painter is that the upcoming book is a Photoshop version of my last book. All the tutorials will be in Photoshop. AND, this particular tutorial is indeed about painting hair....I would do a pretty poor job of doing a tutorial about being a sexy girl...

nice, good work.

first, i think it makes no difference which porgram u have used. these stupid "software-wars" are boring.

i have a small problem with the right shoulder/arm, it looks, for me, too flat. perhaps i´m wrong.

I agree, the software is just a tool but the publisher thinks the photoshop crowd will buy this book when they might not have bought the earlier version as it was Painter oriented....I guess time will tell :) It is all new tutorials/images so hopefully some will find use for it.

You are also right about the shoulder...very flat looking. I need to fix that. I was concentrating on the hair and not really intending to finish the drapery or lower section of the image but that is a glaring error. thanks for the fresh eye.

I think you are right. It is not a particularly dynamic piece but then it is meant to demonstarte a technique and not to stand on its own as a painting. In that context, maybe it fills the need adequately. Could it be improved, undoubtedly.

Well your publisher was right! I remember when the last book came out and I was wishing it had been for PS instead. Interested to see how you handle flesh tones etc in PS. Looking forward to it this time.

As for the best program.....Hmmmmm. :D The most honest answer that I can give is this. I use both programs extensively, sometimes for similar tasks but mostly for different tasks. Most of my digital painting is still done in Painter though some is now done in Photoshop. Almost anything I do that is done using text, I will opt for Photoshop. I do most preparation of images for either web or print in Photoshop though Painter is getting much better here. So the answer is that neither is better for all things and both are better for some things.

Given that wishy-washy yet accurate evaluation of my feelings about Photoshop and Painter, I must admit to using two or three very inexpensive shareware programs quite often too. They are Real Draw Pro, Project Dogwaffle, and Art Rage. If you have not seen these before, I would suggest you have a look. They are all very cool programs and do some things extremely well.

Absolutely love this Don (as much as I have your original book next to my desk on standby *fanboy slurp*).

However, I find this piece lacks some of the colour variation that you have in your Painter work. I think that's because Painter does some very subtle colour effects when it applies brushes and photoshop does everything in such a linear way that it can seem a bit harsher.

Anyway, I really like, look forward to the new book as well.
