heres some non payed work im doing on a game called ballistic to try and get myself up to standard.
Any advice would be grand!

Is this game free to download and play? If it isn't be sure to have your share, you can do this kind of stuff even if you're not actually working.
For your art, do yourself a perspective grid even for characters, can be really useful.

Hitsu, yeah they said its going to be free to play, probably - but there talking to steam at the minute.

So... they may be got paid to sell this game eventually and you will be surely not? Isn't there something wrong in this picture?
Man i'm not going to say this enough maybe but being a concept artist is the same as being a pizza boy: the client makes a request, and you deliver a product in answer. There's not such a thing as be a free taxi driver or a free laborer, even if you are the worst in the earth. No one is going to take you seriously after the second you'll start a work for free which isn't at least for charity. In that case then you're going to have your share of glory, it's ok, even if it's free to play be sure to have your name in the credits. You know, the fact that most of people who's starting out will take works for free is cause they compare with the high end pros and think that they're not going to be paid if they don't become like that one day but this is wrong. It's a ladder and the high step is on the sky, i'm aware that seems like this, but before that high step there are a lot of others in the middle.
And (i'm talking a lot) you surely are doing a work which is worth paying something for.

thaks hitsu, i read something on this section yesterday about 'if there are artists out there working for free then no studio is going to pay other artists when they can employ them for nothing'. and i totally agree with thative been trying for like a year to get payed experience and couldnt get anything; so i thought i might as well get relavent experience as the stuff i was going at the time had no structure so i thought doing free-freelance would at least teach me a couple of things.
i was talking to the guy in whos basically serving as the producer and hes trying to get a demo out there, and at the minute him and all the guys working arent getting anything. He also said that when they start on the full game hes gunna create payed contracts for the team and i am already going to be credited for the work. obveously im trusting the guy and keeping contact with him; i guess i just have to see what happens when the demo hits.

It doesnt matter if its an official game or not. Dont work for free.

Rather ponder first //why// you aren't getting those paid jobs before jumping into obvious "you'll get paid when the product starts netting money!" trap.

yeah i know i shouldnt be working for free; im sort of trying to just use it as studying time/ experience building.
i have pondered at why im not getting payed, its something to do with not being up to professional level and not having any experience yet.

Why don't you make up some mock briefs for yourself if you want practice.
Or there's always the CHOW's and IDW's and stuff like that, which are similar.
As for the art, the environment sketches are lacking in contrast, sharpen up and put more detail in the foreground.

fireblade - yeah thanks dude thats great advice.
also yeah most of these where worked background to foreground, but i sort of neglected the foreground. i'll sort them out.
