Hey all. Finally got around to starting one of these. I hope you all enjoy viewing these drawings as much as I enjoy making them. It's gonna be slow for now because I'm working on my 3D Demo Reel. That WIP thread can be found here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22309) or at the bottom in my sig. Take care and enjoy =)

Random sketches on notes during class:

Did these next three in class during our fifteen minute break. Ran down the hall to the life drawing room. One minute studies:
http://img51.photobucket.com/albums/v155/Character/CAForum/Daily_Sketchbook/20MAY04/008.jpg

This one started as a 5 minute study but then I had to go back to class so I drew some sketches around her:

One more life drawing sketch, don't remember how much time i spent on it, but it was quick:

let me be the second. ha.

sup, love the line style. your figure drawings i like the most. especially 007.jpg, the girl with her hands behind her head. nice form, good use of strokes/hatching. what kind of pen are you using.

your line work is reminding me of MIKECORRIERO and how you carry the line to create form. cool.

alright man cya around, hope to grab maya from ya soon...i got a bit drunk last night had 2 32oz miller high lifes...

Cool style, very loose. My fav has to be the dude with the sword on the first page, althought the life drawing and gestures are cool too.

thanks for the comments. and this whole time i thought know one would notice, hehe. i'm glad you guys all like the loose stuff. i prefer to draw like that. whenever i start going into detail i usually loose it, well, only when i start off loose. if i want tight, i have to start tight. wierd enit? anyways, here are my notes that i took this morning while reading over the coffee bean orientation manual. started today at 6am. then had school from 12-4 and started my second job at papa johns at 5:30-9pm. GOOD STUFF, haha. anyways, here ya go:

Wow character, great stuff. Your pen style is off the chain, it looks like you never even pick it up when youre drawing, and that takes alot of talent to get good at! Your gestures are also nice, and have just the perfect amount of infornmation. I think I could learn a thing or two. Post more soon!

this is my character named "Corona". I'm re-designing her for either a graphic novel or a video game format. her old design was made for tv animation:

Just went through your thread ::: like your work a great deal ::: particularly your looser drawings ::: you seem to have a good feel for form and I like the way you go about searching it out.

THX: For your comments on the Dom thread people either love it or hate it.
It is either a 5 or a zero vote, no in between. Of course you get the zeros from people who are still eating their crayons and shouldn't really have voting rights on this forum (they prove that by giving threads that have a 5 star rating a zero just to bring it down. These people think their opinion is more important that everyone else. Are it proves is that they have a lack of taste. I have had 3 or 4 zeros in a row on the Dom thread which was a 5 for ever. It is also in the CA's best gallery, which means these zero givers, which never post by the way, think they are smarter than the administrators.

well, been awhile since i last posted. been super busy working 3 part time jobs trying to pay the bills and finish school. hopefully i'll graduate this quarter. good news tho, i scored a job at a place called tomo software where we're developing a game for the cell phone and i'm doing all the artwork from now on. i'm so happy it's nuts. i get to quit 3 of my other jobs since this one more than makes up for 'em. now i'll finally have some free time to work on my demo. and i've been thinking of making a short after i finish school. we'll see. anyways, i would do a huge post but i don't have time to scan everything and resave, upload, etc so i'm gonna share something with you i did last night and just finished off. linework you'll see in an earlier post, the colors tho i did after watching one of feng zu's dvd's. after i finished it, i noticed that it kinda came out looking in the style of prostate sunrise. whereever you are, you f'n rule. thanks for coloring that one pic for me. it blew my mind. i'll have to find your sketchbook thread as soon as i get some more free time. peace out all. enjoy, or not. it's a free universe

i found a new pen today. my friend at school let me borrow it 'cause i forgot to stuff my pen and pencil in my pocket this morning in a rush to go to school. once i started i couldn't put it down. unfortunately, she had to go home eventually so i had to give it up. but tomorrow, i'm going to office max and buying a box. i love discovering new pens. i just love inks. the pen in question, by the way, is a uniball jetstream. it's a ball point pen but amazingly handles and performs like a refillable ink pen. it's nuts. the lines are so beautiful. i started with the thingy in the middle with the stuff just stickin out. after that i did the eye above it and to the right, then the messed up face on the bottom left, followed by the arm, then the monster on the top left, tree guy next to him, girls face next to the half, well, 70% naked girl on the right, then the guy under the thingy that i started on, then the figure on the top of the page, then the face on the top right, then the 70% nekkid girl on the far right. i added the captions at the end of it all. just thought i'd drop that info in case anyone was interested. click on the image for the full size version. 350k, beware

thing i love most about these are the bodies themselves... without the heads. the cartoony style is funny, but i wanna see something that kicks ASS! imo, you should work on heads the most. your bodies are solid. not seein' too many 3/4ths views... so do more of those. keep up the good work, and good to hear you're outta Papa John's. :D

hey, thanks odds. unfortunately, heads are the one thing i'm not as good at which is why i draw 'em cartoony. i kinda dig it but alot of people mention it. i try to work on 'em more and more but they never match the bodies. i don't know what it is. i really have trouble drawing from observation when it comes to faces which is a major factor in this i think. i dunno, i'll try hard with some good ref's or maybe do some sp's or something. we'll see what happens. thanks for stopping by man. cool hanging out with you today at the meet, even if it was for only an hour =p

These were fun to look through,, the ones where you loosen up you hand because of conte or cuz' you are more confident in the subject matter are my favorites... The last page and the other B/W one before it are really good looking.. pages where all the drawings are good look really rewarding.

how there are lots of thumb-nail size drawings around the last page seems really to keep your hand moving and not dawdle too long on a small detail or area..

Your drawings look alot better when you are thinking with thumb-nail sketches as you go towards a larger more intensive drawing. It seems to give you more control and dynamism. When you are kind of just going back and forth between them it seems like you are firing on all cylinders.

Just thought you should know that, in case it is so natural to you, you don't see it.

hey man!

had fun looking through your book. I think our styles will mesh well (go sinister 6 woot!). Maybe we can do a collab some time soon.

In regards to the last piece, and your overall rendering style. SOmething i picke dup while oc'ing with hurricane is the importance of blending, even in stylistic rendering. Its good that you have identified planes and shapes like int he neck, but delineating them so strongly can sometimes harm the piece. A lot of stylistic 'looks' only work in series - i can see ten of these together looking awesome, but as a one of the rendering looks awkward (if you take my meaning).

Have a look at good pencilworks and hatching (insane_visions, wes9000) and see what i mean by how they identify planes and shapes but still blend it all nicely so the form holds together.

Looking forward to working with you man.

Peace

thanks guys. i agree with you on the rendering form. the thing is, i don't understand what you're saying. i need to see it happening in front of me to actually get it. the whole shading bit that is. this is why i like sticking to lineart. i don't have to color it. here's something i was fiddling with. girlfriend said it needed more tones/shadows etc. but when i asked her how to implement it, she went blank. so, any tips? or is this good? is it finished? i dunno. i thought i was =\

http://www.forestzachman.com/images/forum_images/character_birdie003_PO.jpg

The main thing I wanted to point out was what a difference cast shadows can make. They really go a long way in helping to define the form and show spacial relationships between objects. I just threw a luminosity layer on top of yours and threw down some grays, blacks and whites in a few places to add cast shadows and a little lighter areas. There's also a quick overlay area to add some hot spot highlights both for interest and material. Oh yeah, and I threw a quick Color layer on there to blue-ify the shadows and warm up the beak and armor a little in a few places.

I dunno if it helps or anything.

Character,

You have some fantastic stuff here. Really love the heads. I particularly like the flamingos and the 'horse skull' demon head.

Your recent photoshop experimentations are A1, I'd definitely like to see more.
Viewed your website, looks great.

One crit though. Some of your renders kinda look flat. This might be happening because the shading used on them is all going in one direction. Try shading around the form. Break the object/objects into basic shapes in your mind, or even in another sketch and then shade them accordingly; following the curves and planes of their surfaces. This takes practice, but eventually your sketches will scream volume.

Keep up the amazing work.

Hi Character,

this is definitely a good start. There are a few things that could use a tweak. Since the light is coming from the top left, the arm should cast a shadow on any portion of the torso below it. But remember, the cast shadow won't shade anything that would be affected by bounced light.

When I get the chance, hopefully in the next day or so, I'll do a shape breakdown for you on this particular piece.

Here's a quick shape and lighting breakdown of your torso sketch. It's far from perfect, but it may help.

Your most recent sketch needs more work. What I think is hindering this sketch from being a good piece is the silhouette and the proportions in your anatomy. Try bringing the arm on the left away from the body, (point the gun away from the viewer).
Having a firm foundation in construction and compostion is far more important then good rendering.

Your models are hella cool. There's tremendous progress between the first few images in this thread and now.

I dig some of the more recent ones, the really ornate looking armaments and things.

One thing I noticed is that some of your lines look like, shaky, almost. As though you're second guessing yourself mid-penstroke. It makes your work look unconfident. You have no need to be. Some of these could be really fantastic pieces with a little more polish.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Keep 'em coming.

Nice big update. I'm liking the pen stuff.

Try to utilize the toned brown paper with white more when you use it.. It will give you much more value right out of the gate. Where you did use white.. it looks more like you kind of outlined with it or something, rather than using it to define highlights

dcept: yeah, before i would spend a bit more time on the sketches, but after watching feng and church and a bunch of other people paint/draw through either their dvd's or live demos i've learned to stop sketching something if i don't like where it's going, THEN start working on it some more. i mean, that's standard stuff that all the badasses do, so why not try it? it definitely helps seed out all the bad ideas. i haven't really finished anything lately but i will tomorrow. gotta do some tdome stuff

well, watched lady and the tramp tonight. managed to get some time with my sketchbook on the couch during the flick. once it was over i pooped on it in photoshop and came out with this crap:

That creature texture is looking good man... starting to gain 'character'. Are you going to leave it black and white or use that as an overlay and color it?

character
March 27th, 2006, 08:34 PM
no, that's just the base lighting. gonna go in and add texture overlays, color, etc. thanks for the comment bud =)

little by little i'm building up the confidence for more finished stuff. that last tdome piece is the closest thing i've gotten done in awhile. i just have a huge problem with perspective but i'm working on it. we'll see what happens

and here's last nights crap. almost all of 'em are from ref:

So much friggin neat stuff in here, man! Seriously loving your stuff. Hey, where's El Mustacho?

I think with the SP, you went to the hard small brushes a bit too soon, so now it's a bit scribbly here and there. Maybe attempt again soon? Bigger brushes!

here's another one. this is getting addicting. i didn't notice until just now but the eye on the right is too high. i think my problem is that i'm going to fast. i'm still trying to find my pace. oh well, we'll see how the next one comes out

Dile: Thanks for the kind words =)
Cookie: thanks for the feedback. i tried sticking with the same size brush this time around. definitely got a better result. not the best, but better. and maybe i'll do some el mustacho's today. if you're lucky =p

Ewwww, you did an SP of your ugly pirate mug.

HAhah, well it looks like you that for sure.

Still the skew problem is present, try doing center lines and guides before tackling the features on faces, if you are not doing that.

The thumbs are kickass on the other hand.

disco: thanks for the tips dude. i'll keep that in mind from now on. i'm just so used to drawing all sloppy that i forget about the guidelines

almost done with the geometry. still need to add flesh on the face which i'm gonna use opacity so you can see the teeth underneath. should be done tonight but i've got some business to take care of so it might not happen until tomorrow. peace out

nice sketchbook! I especially like the pages with lots of small figures doodled all about. That last posting of the colors over sketches are great. I love those. It looks like you went a bit bolder or thicker with the colors over the sketch than in some of your older colored pieces. I think it works way better. The first 2 girls are great, sorta dominatrix babes.
