E.O.W Round #180: Arctic Desert Shipwreck
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/chaosrocks/EOW2.jpg

Happy new years all! 2011 was a great year for EOW and it's been my pleasure to host this activity. Looking forward to what 2012 brings and I will continue to harvest quality topics with the assistance of those who make suggestions and whatever else I can conjure up from the confines of my mind! :yayca:

This week's topic is...

TOPIC = Arctic Desert Shipwreck

Brief:

Open. Can be a flying vessel or an actual ship(s).

- Please specify which image is final in this thread! I will post your finals in the Voting Thread myself.

***I will be gone for 11 days starting Jan. 5th so if you have any questions please consult another moderator for the time being.***

Happy New Year 2012 everyone!!

This is a kickass topic. I guess 'desert' refers more to the landscape than to the ship, but since I was curious about rendering ice/water interaction, I placed the scene in a sort of isolated cove instead of a dry place.

Ah! This topic is FANTASTIC! It reminds me of a few of my favourite pieces by Aivazovsky, Church, and Caspar Friedrich!

Aivazovsky's paintings are particularly magnificent references for man o' wars and maritime landscapes. Church's iceberg paintings will top any photograph from Antarctica in my opinion...

First digital sketch based on some scribbles on paper. The Terror by Dan Simmons is a great reference read for this topic (if you can read fast, you might be able to finish the 1000p book before the deadline) ;)

atm I'm more worried about the composition, everything else is very sucky.

Looking awesome guys!

scrapped my last one and had a better idea, also approached it a differently, looks much better...I'm a beginner when it comes to enviros so I'm gonna try and keep things fairly simple for the time being, if I feel the need I can add other things to it later...but I definitely need some kind of foreground element in this one...

I missed a few of you sorry guys, i'll try edit in more comments later

Rob:
Good to see you around here parts! your secound one is starting out good remember about the false perseption of depth, thats a trick for landscapes.
things are less saturated the farther they are etc, your sort of setting that up it seems. . . .

Ryvax:
liking the sun setish effect, pretty cool

Timmi-o-Tool:
liking the passage way tunnel thru your ship!

Dm7:
pretty abstract, but so much potential here, its almost like a sci-fi painting, keep just hammering the shapes out eventually youll find yourself at a point
where you can start going into little details

JanJager:
like the smoke like apparence of the ice/snow at the right base of the ship, like cream, a sort of hint where you are heading with this???

Animare:
potential in this one.

Nick.M:
everybody is doing a ship thats been there for years, i like your original approach of the ship just being wrecked, not sure if it fits with the breif but it seems like it.
the northen lights are a great touch.

unruhe:
great set up, multiple ship wrecks is also what im going for. i want to see more MORE!!!!!

melman:
loving the distruction and lighting + scale.

Mandavar:
nice original idea, its just hard to see the ship form and how its halled out of the ice. but the scale is great.

Panshi:
Love it, but the sides make this seem like a cavern, wouldnt it be better to make it panaramic, taking the sides out and just extending the background to infinity in the sides
you could eventually make a whole civilazation in destroyed ships in the background. Insane scale by the way EPIC HUGE!!

Makrozon:
on the cliffs edge!! Great, makes me wonder what other possible elements you could add in this? helicopters?? cant wait to see more

Shorinji_Knight:
finally somebody doing a old scunner, tho its hard to see it being a wreck looks like its playing bumper cars with the icebergs, the polar bear is a bit too big, makes the ship look really smale in scale for the type of ship that it actually is.

8smoku8:
looking good, the footspets of the two folks approaching the ship, rather than using black lines maybe try dark blue blobs, snow sort of melts when you walk on top of it making water, therefore blue colour????

Pixeltuner:
liking the ship structure, not sure but the clouds in the far background might not fit in with the blizzard snow flakes in the fore ground???

Only started painting with Acrylics last week, thought id try this one that way.
its suppose to be a freight ship toppled on its side half buried, with containers sproon across the tundra, once the paint dries for sure, i'll scan and post. might use the scanned image in photo shop and turn it in to a panoramic landscape, seems to compressed right now on the A5 Budweiser 6 pack cardboard carrier

Pixeltuner
January 6th, 2012, 07:02 AM
Corrick: Epic. Very nice sense of scale!
Timmi-O-Tool: I like the movement in this one. The way the ice curls gives it an almost Munch like quality. If you pull that through in the cloud shapes as well you'll have a really nice flowing piece of art :)
Nick-M: A night scene with some northern lights eh? Makes it stand out immediately from the rest of us white ice blue skies nutters :) Make it happen!

Tried some different stuff on mine. Angled the composition a bit, some vertical spikes to break it a bit more, different colourscheme and a bit more story. And more stylization and abstraction on the environment itself.

Ryvax
January 7th, 2012, 02:43 PM
Corrick> impressive sense of scale!

PixelTuner: liking the new elements adding to the story, but I think the composition is less efficient than before.. their placement attracts the eye too far from the focal point imo, vertical spikes dragging eyes to the right, and the flare very close to the top edge..

Little update, starting to be more happy with the compo and color (struggled to get out of the blue monochrome!!) need to fix the drawing now!

Update from my sketch...dont know if I should ditch the chain in the foreground or not

Shorinji_Knight
January 8th, 2012, 11:01 AM
unruhe: I'd ditch the chain. It's too perfectly centered and takes all of the dynamics out of your composition. I think you need some element there instead, just to the left of where the chain currently is, but I don't know what. Otherwise looking good.

I'll call this my Final for now...if I decide to continue working on it, I'll post the update...

'Look! A ship! It looks like one of those icebreakers.'

'What could've happened?'

'I don't know, but the ship still has power.'

'But it must have been here for years. There's no way it could still have power.'

'C'mon! There could still be someone on board.'

'Something doesn't quite seem right'...

It has now been six and a half days that the carcass of the USS-Intrepid was lying in the middle of nowhere. The water that had occupied the ballast tanks had frozen to the point of breaching the hull, and the adverse weather conditions had only worsened the situation.

The remaining members of the crew had managed to build a camp at the foot of the wreckage. Out of provisions and with only one signal flare remaining, the four men were now considering their last move.
