Unfortunately my art teacher has a nasty habit of tearing apart her student's artwork when she feels they aren't working hard enough. Unfortunately mine was one of the sacrifices the other day. That's why I usually scan my drawings half way through so I have some form of a record.

The sketch in question was part of an art assigment and a part of a book cover for my creative writing class.

I left the tapestry there unfinished because my story was originally called "The Unfinished Tapestry." I don't know why I put the tiara or the yarn there. It just seemed to fit more than anything.

The guy holding the sword and the gal in the tapestry were created from what we call "skeletal systems" in art class. I don't know if there's an official term, it's just what we jokingly call it. We're all given these stick figures and we have to work off those to make them into people or things. That's where I got their positions from.

It's kind of a weird sketch no matter how you look at it.

...Tearing up her students' drawings? Ack, I didn't know such barbaric art teachers still exist in civilized society. If I ever had such a teacher, I'd give him or her a nice lil kick in the ass.

Hmm, your picture's a bit too small to see properly, but a suggestion would be to practise on faces and anatomy. I don't know if you've heard of Andrew Loomis, but I find his figure drawing books to be really good references. Here's a site where you can download one of his books:

Thanks! Yeah, I do need some work on my faces and anatomy. My problem is I've never really had any formal art training. I've taken a few composition classes here and there.

For some reason or another my head and shoulder shots always seem to turn out better.

Can I ask where you go to school? Ripping up work sounds a little harsh, I don't really care if teachers criticize my work to no end, but ripping stuff up seems ridiculous. I mean, I still have old drawings that are terrible that I keep, just so I can document my progress, or lack thereof...

 If any of my teachers even THOUGHT about even TOUCHING one of my pieces in order to Commit this Heinous Crime upon them.... I would rip them a new one.
Anyway, I feel for the loss of one of your creations :( Even if it was just a sketch. I like your style, but i agree with the comments on face + anatomy. Keep up the good work

I go to a JC for the most part. I'm over here in California. I hope that you don't mind that I'm a little edgy about giving out the name of my school. I've had a bad experience that way once.

I do agree that my anatomy does need some work. I'm better than I was though. When getting reviews I usually do want to hear the good, the bad, the ugly, and the what the heck is that? It's the only way I'm going to learn and hopefully get better.

Well, feel free to tell your art teacher everyone here thinks he's an ass :D . And those "skeletal systems", they sound kinda like art manikins to me.

so if i understand this correctly, this teacher literaly rips artwork into pieces... if this is the case, a basball bat and blow torch might be required... if anyone ever thought of doing anything like that to my art, i swear i would hurt them, maybe even kill them

basicly, as far as your drawing goes, i agree with what others have said, you are on the right track... still a lot of work to do, but it's heading in the right direction

No, the human body will not instinctively stay in contact with a blow torch long enough to cause real damage. Rope is required too...hahahah-oh not funny? Well it sucks that the teacher rips things up, but keep working at that anatomy!

hmm... I've constantly pondered the blowtorch-to-the-kneecaps paradox...
I Believe that with the correct use of force to the base of the skull will incapacitate the victim long enou---- oh, you were joking? nevermind

Lady_Dernhelm-
That's fine. I'm not really all that concerned about what the school is, but I'm just afraid that if your teacher is doing things that crazy then he/she is probably not the best art teacher and it might benefit you to look for another one. I know with JC's it's kind of a hit or miss situation.

I've got lecturers who tear apart, or crush work in progress if they think you're not keeping up to standards.

The worst one was in Foundation year, we were doing a sculpture made out of paper boxes and cones. She crushed mine and got me to do it over. I finished it, minus 2 nights worth of sleep. Naturally I didn't get very good grades.

Some lecturers feel its tough love, rather than seeing you make a mistake all the way to the end, they rip up your work so you will start again, and hopefully not make the same mistakes.

But when not properly explained, they just piss people off.

Ah, the cruel art tutelage of Pai Mei...

"It is the blank page that should be afraid of YOU!"

(edit) Actually, that's a pretty good state of mind to be in....

Groover McNab,

You're right about the hit or miss thing in JC's. There's one good art teacher that I had last year. Unfortunately he's retiring so I'm kind of left to fend for myself. It's my last year there so there's a chance I can get some different and good teachers.

Darth Massacre,

Oh, I feel for you in those regards. In High School I had a project of mine get dropped and broken, but that was when I got my grade on it.

If it's tough love on the teacher's part then all she's doing is ticking off her students.

MoFra,

When that happens you think "There has GOT to be a better way to tell me." When my teacher tore mine up I was thinking "if you didn't like it you could have just said so."
