In addition there is also a stand alone painting program called OpenCanvas..

you can download it at

http://www.portalgraphics.net/

It is basically like painting in that style.. give it a look see the brush engine is lacking, but very cool at the same time.

ok just a question ont the tutorial if your stil around dj im using 7 instead of 6 from the tuts ive been reading investing in buying a copy of 6 may be worth it instead but whcih brushes translate to 7 from the ones he metnions in 6 ? why they would change the name of the brushes is kinda stupid in my opinion between versions

Try using the tinting brush - basic rounds in painter 7 to get a similar effect to painter 6 simple water brush. You may have to download the patch for painter 7 to get access to the tinting brushes.

Hi Cerreto,

The actual brush engine for the watercolours was changed in version 7, so basically Painter watercolour brushes prior to version 7 cannot be converted in the same way as most of the other brushes.

Painter brushes prior to version 7 were also platform dependant, and Mac users were provided with a utility called Copy RSR to aid conversion between the two formats. Painter 7 makes use of xml brush files which are platform independant, so life is much easier when sharing brushes between users.

Now for some very good news;

A Japanese artist named Juma has built a set of excellent watercolour and 'dry layer' wet brushes for Painter 7 which include some water only diffusion brushes. There are other brushes also- for Painter 6. The Painer 6 brushes are named in Japanese and are .lzh files. You will need to decompress them with WinRAR (possibly Stuffit expander: free Windows version available). You will then need to rename and resave the P6 (PC) brushes with recognisable names.

The Painter 7 file at the bottom of Juma's page has been kindly translated into English names (wetset20021210e.zip)

Juma's download page is;
