My mom is a retired school teacher and has written some young children's books but hasn't had any luck getting them published. I suggest she self publish her books in ebook format since she can do it now without the help of a publisher.

For instance she can create an ibook/ebook for the iPad/kindle/B&N basically for free.

I'm trying to find out for her how viable it is to hire an artist to do simple cartoon type illustrations for her books. For instance one is about hamsters and she wants it to be around 30 pages long.

Unfortunately I don't know how well an ebook would do for her and don't want her to spend too much money trying to see if it would take off or not.

Anyone have any advice?

You know that most e-book readers have relatively coarse graphics in b&w, right?

Welcome to the world of business. If you believe in the product put your money up and you will get people. Expect to pay at least 100 an illustration for low end work. Otherwise have a friend do the art for free, publish it at kinkos and pass it out at family gatherings.
