Hey guys,

http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/Pen Bobcat Sketch.jpg

I am having a lot of fun using a pen to sketch...it is teaching me how to control my strokes. I had a lot of problems with rendering the fur. Can anyone provide any help? Maybe point me to any resources. In general too all the stuff I do in pen ends up getting way to muddy or jumbled (if you know what I mean)...the strokes don't convey what they should. Any help would be appreciate...thanks

One thing about doing exceptionally complex objects is that its sometimes a pain in the ass to do the whole thing. Unless you're really into rendering the entire thing, or just plain psychotic, then why do you even need to? Try just placing the lines that are only necessary to represent fur. The viewer gets the idea even if you don't do every single piece of fur as long as the important parts are.

Thanks Ironspy...that makes a whole lot of sense. I guess in time I will learn where those important parts are. I am new to art so that's probably a Newbie thing...feeling like I have to render everything. Thanks a bunch man that's great advice.

Beautifull piece. Rendering hair or fur is tougher than many think, especially with pen.

One suggestion, I agree with Ironspy in simplyfying it a bit (no need to render every strand). Also, maybe tapering the end of strokes a bit more will help establishing the fur texture.

Thanks Talos...that's a great suggestion as well. Tapering the ends...good call. Yeah I find that I always go way darker than I want to when I am trying to sketch in pen. I don't know if it's my lack of experience or what but I always end up doing that. I guess with time I will get better with that. I think I need to think more about my strokes before I put them down too. I tend to feel the need to hurry up for some reason. I need to slow down and be more patient and think more about where I should be placing things. Thanks for the help man. I have been following your stuff for a while. It's really good. I am a rookie so I can offer much criticism but I can say I like it. Good job man.
