Portrait of woman from photo reference, first finished post
About 4 hours in photoshop 7

looks nice, but there is very little shadow. perhaps post up the original picture so i can see what im tryign to say. i think the eye cavities should have shading...just please let me see the picture to see if im just being a moron. also, this looks a lot like my chemistry teacher.

Yeah the face does look kind of flat, but I couldn't see many value changes in the face on the reference. I think its the way her face is lit from the front, it seems to wash out the shadows.

you could try upping the contrast to see where the shades would be..

My guess would be the absence of a background. The figure is in such a strong frontal situation, that without a background no amount of rendering is going to help. In the photo there's an out of focus something or other creating a sense of depth due to figure/ground stacking.

I guess what makes the Photograph cool is the contrast between the girls light colour and the dark background. The darkness of the background is also the same value as the darkest shadow of her hair.
I'd say this is the essential contrast that is missing in your composition and may solve the "lack of contrast in the girl itself" issue :)
but what do i know... :)

Thanks for all your comments/crits...
I've made some of the changes you suggested, darked the background, put the out of focus window in and tweeked here and there.
