May already, let's make this month even better than the last one :D

And I just wanna say thanks to all the self portrait people for support and such. It's been a great experience so far getting comments and trying to improve the basic motoric skills of my hand. :p

I'll try to comment more on other people as well cause i haven't really done that a lot.

this is nr. 95

^ about 45 more minutes on this i thought it would be a good time to post some more of it. slight changes in refing the drawing of it.

i am going to start doing quick sp sketches again so i can keep up on it... i miss doing them but i don't have time for longer ones right now :(

- CRITS -

Jens - cool i am glad you are moving yoru face around :D in this one you hair kind of looks like a bllanket placed on your head :D i think it is b/c of the strong shadow you put in. i am not saying it looks bad, but it def has a feeling of weight to it!

farley13 - i like your lines and most of them move in the direction of the forms and masses. good work!

Tjendol - looking better. that is the key experiment, try using maybe to brushes next time and see what you can do with them :D also try giving you head and neck somehting to rest on. keep going!

-Jesse

p.s. - i don't like how some of my subtle colours just get ignored by the digi-cam and are just grouped into a general colours i.e.- the nose and some other spots :( is there a way around this or will i just need to get a camera and take a photograph of it when i am done?

Jens - The first thing I noticed on your sketch was the lips. o_o I love them XD Overall nicely done~

farley13 - You really know how to sketch shadows :D I love the eyes. Would've liked to see you finish the hair tho :P

Tjendol - *thumbs up* ^_^-b Really cool to see lotsa colored works as well! And as mentioned before, give yourself some shoulders XD

J.Mac - First thing that came to mind when I saw your drawing was: Woah! Scary! So it really affected me o_o Maybe I'm odd for pointing out small details like this.. But I cant help it! The way you've drawn your tounge XD looks really good!

bhuddistmonk - i can't wait to see what you are up to!

Tjendol - good! :D

JenJen - Fun quick sketch i see :D your nose makes you look arrogant :p Thanks the tongue "imo" is one of the most dolid pieces on the canvas, i haven't found a reason to touch it yet unlike the rest of it :(

i knew i couldnt sit out of this for too long. so here is my first for may.... blurry and blotchy as usual, and it turned out to be a horrible composition, i should lean forward more and should have put the figure more to the right of the image. i may work more on this one, i'm having a photoshop phase..

http://nirvine.250free.com/may2.jpg

and some comments before things get too busy..

jens- nice work, a couple of hair studies would really help your SPs i think, try to avoid the scribbling ;-)

farley13- nice drawing, i like the chaotic lines and you really showed the form well. mechanical pencils are great!

tjendol- it is addictive isn't it! i vote for you adding shoulders too. good improvements.

jenjen- less manga this time, try drawing with only straight lines, i found that a good exercise to get me away from drawing what i thought i saw, nice little sketch though

jmac- coming along great, i love the range of colours and the slight light on the far cheek really brings the form out. as for the hand, the only thing that bugs me is the finger, it looks like you're bending only the end joint, and in the earlier photos i see that the finger is in a more natural position, maybe that would help...

cheers

jmac- glad you fixed your broken finger :-p it's looking good, maybe need to push the focal point a bit, some highlights around the eye? not sure what stage you're at so ignore if you're still working through it.

sone_one- nice sketch and shading on those, dropping the ear seems like the thing to do but i'm not 100% sure on that ;-)

this one was a little ambitious i think and turned out a bit 'arsey' (no pun intended) great fun to do though and i like it better than the previous one.

LadyLioness,

I hope you don't mind, I brought your picture into Photoshop and adjusted the levels real quick.
I'm rather new here, but I've been following your progress.

http://www.emilygordon.com/sp34darker.jpg

Now, you probably can't get it this dark with the pencil you're using.
You would have to use charcoal or a really soft pencil.
And you don't have to get it this dark, either.
It's just something to think about. I like your progress and I know you will keep improving.
And don't worry about making comments right now--the more you learn, the more you will be able to see in both your own work and in others'.

Hopefully, I'll add a sp to this thread soon so you guys can all give me crits.

cheers,
emily

I have been on a photoshop kick for a while now, getting to like that program...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/hourselfporty.jpg

J.Mac... haha, that last one is cool, I have been in a wierd mood too. dont know why, I have been out of motivation for a few days now.. anyways, love that last one, it is pleasant to my eyes..

LadyLioness... you are getting better, the details in this show more than most past efforts.. You seem to be pretty good at critting yourself, so that is good. This particular one could use more symetry, your left and right sides look pretty different than each other, i think it is the jaw lines and the eyes mostly...

pixelherder.. oh so nice there, I love your choice in the placement of all of your strokes... not sure if you were going for it but this kinda looks like a characature due to the big eyes.

Ni*... haha, look at the naked man.. I feel like the computer tools are holding you back more than your artistic skill. I dont know how to get these cleaner but what has been working for me is using a higher opasity and working slower. Also maybe try using more saturation with your colors, like the shadows of your last one could have less grey and more red. It seems like all of the mixing colors at low opasities are kinda greying out the overall colors... I like the overall sense of form and value on these a lot though, as I do your colors...

someone... that last one is very clean and nice, if a bit stylistic in the eyes...

Tjendol... Yours is very clean and nice as well. One thing to liven it up a bit is to shade the eyes. THey are eyeBALLS so they have shadows too.

JenJen... awww. so cute. looking so good for so few of lines...

farley13... The proportions seem to be very nice and the shading is good. if cleaned up it would be very nice...

jens... solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid put more effort into your hair solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid solid

Pixelherder: that's a great piece man!

J.Mac: It's getting better but I still think that finger is a bit crooked
I also think the nose should be a little lighter..the rest looks just fine, like the facial expression.

Jook: you're right, thnx. I tried to shade the eyes a bit more in this piece. Great piece but the hair looks a little more flat than the rest of the painting to me...it's like it,s hanging in front of your head...but maybe that's just your 'do'...lol

Jens: that one is really cool...the eyes are nice and i dig the way of shading in the face.

Well...here's my latest speed SP :) I'm gonna finish it later I think...I need a bigger mirror anyway. The one I'm using is like half the size of my face..explanes why the shoulders are missing every time :)

Ni* > cheers. In answer to your question, simply draw as much as you can as often as you can. No other way round it, but its guaranteed to work. And pick up and do as many tutorials as you can in the meantime. Which is one of the best reasons for being here on conceptart

jook > no, not a charicature. The big eyes are probably just a by product of drawing using a mirror and ending up unconsciously focusing on the eyes. That and i'm probably kind of google-eyed anyway :)

Tjendol and jmac > thanks a lot!

Very strange day, I did this with no reference, just experimenting with colors...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/eldiablo.jpg

Axiom-... cool man, welcom. Tis a good drawing. It seems as though the plane of the eyes are facing the viewer where the mouth and nose are pointed off more to your right.

strych9ine... neat colors, if a bit muddy... The proportions see off a bit (small eyes, small mouth, small chin) keep them coming...

Rash Overdrive.. wow, very nice. not sure how old you are but this almost makes you look kinda like a kid, I think it is the skinny neck.

Tjendol... I like that one, I like the more loose brush strokes... I dont think the saturation of the lips and eyes match the piece though. Also I think the jaw line needs to be dropped a bit below the ears...

JenJen.. cute. besides the eye thing you mentioned, I think it could benefit from less scratchy of lines, like single solid and confident lines.

Jens... damn man, I dont know what to crit.. looks very good... again...

Tjendol
May 6th, 2004, 09:16 AM
Jook:

I agree with you on the saturated lips...it doesn't fit..and the jaw..im afraid your right again..lol. I just stopped painting at that point though...just like you don't see a neck..there's no lower part of the jaw...but I will add it because I also think it will look a lot better.

About your pic:

It scares me :D It looks like this guy's face was smashed up..hehe
just joking..I understand it's an experiment.

Well..here's my latest thing...I wanted to do something just with dark colors...I'm not pleased with it myself..first of all it doesn't resemble me that well and secondly...well..painting with dark colors is just a damned hard thing to do
So..more practice for me I guess..

Rash: I like it! Is this done in PS?

ok, here's the sp I promised:

http://www.emilygordon.com/emilygsp5-6-04.jpg

A little under an hour, done with Painter using the charcoal brush.

tjendol--looks good. I would make the upper lid overlap the iris a little bit more, but maybe you did this to make it look scary.

jook--you are getting some good flesh tones on the nose, especially on the shadow side.

axiom--very nice. The right eye looks a little elongated compared to the left one. I like the blue coming in on the right side of the face.

strychnine--I can tell you're still getting warmed up, so I'll hold a little on the comments. Maybe try a line drawing or do a monochromatic one so you can get back into it without worrying about the flesh tones.

rash overdrive--cool. The background is a nice touch. I am losing the form on the shadow side of your face.

jenjen--cute. Your style is very whimsical. I like it.

jens--you are doing very well. I would like you to do one where you include the shape of your skull drawn lightly underneath your hair. This will get you to see the structure of your whole head. (I think your hair is hiding this for you.) Good job!

j.mac--I think the flesh tones on the "dripping" part of your face are really great.

pixelherder--very nice. I love the little hatch marks. They show the planes very well.

Ni--I would like you to try a flat brush. I think this will be very interesting and challenging for you. Flesh tones are getting there.

sone_one--cool. The structure lines in your drawing show you know what you're doing. I'm impressed that you didn't use a mirror. I think the forward eye is a little big, but I think it works with the piece.

farley13--I really like this. It has an "old masters" feel.

Havent played with enough traditional stuff lately, here is a page from my sketchbook I decided to try my hand at inking again...

the eyes are too big and the nose too small, bummer I cant erase ink...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/selfdelinkias.jpg

emily g... nice. it seems acurate.. nice technique on the lips.

Tjendol... This one reads very nicely. good overall values. again, I am not a fan of the eyes. I always get the very generic impression when I see very bright eyes like that, mabye just me though...

now for some comments :)

jook- I like how you experiment so much. I think your most recent black and white SP is my favourite.

emily g- nice. I like the feel of it and I like the use of shadow. It seems simple but I think that shows your confidence in doing it.

Strich9ine and Rash Overdrive- I like the solid feel of both of these ones

sone_one- your tone work feels so solid and 3dimensional, looks like it's modelled rather than painted.

well that's it for me, unless you wanna skip over and check out my sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22972)

Hi there everyone

Nice work and good progress. Hope there will be a day for me to be glad of one of my SP. I just bought a Wacom tablet and already started to learn. I never drew a SP, so iti is very difficult for me to do it.. but THANKS GOD this forum exists. and I have alot of motivation and reference to gladly do it.

This is something I have tried to get used to the digital painting and to get used how to draw a head. I think not all proportions are good, but still.. I did my best. Please any good advice (where to learn more, what to focus on more.. etc.. ) and critics are welcome.

Well, the DSG has been broken for two days, so I finally got a chance to join this thread. Been meaning to do so for quite sometime, but never found it... two kids, full time job, and a pregnant wife, no time.

shadowman: could use some more contrast, background could be made darker to bring the face out more

expat: eyes look big in all of them, love the nose and the mouths!!

jook: yay traditional!! i've been handeling my pencils like ink in a way, i didn't use an eraser. All i can say is that resemblence will come slowly. Focus on proportions first.

emily: thx :) i think i did that in the third one i'm posting here below, if that's what you mean?

tjendol: looks creepy :) you could do something with the background to add to that feeling

I had fun with this yesterday so I squeezed in some time today to do another. When I did both yesterday's and today's I actually drew myself without my glasses even though I was wearing them while I was drawing it. Not because I am afraid to draw the glasses, but I usually wear contacts and don't like the way I look with glasses.

About an hour in Painter 8.

well, I have been enjoying these traditional SP's so much that I decided I will keep doing it this way for a while. This was just ink. the grey is ink that is watered down with alcohol...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/squiggly_giggles.jpg

shadoman... these are nice, glad to see you over here. I think that the rendering is nice. What could use some attention is the anatomy, on your last one the nose and forehead seem a bit big where the chis seems small. Keep at it and things will get more and more accuarate as time goes..

Cue... I like this one, the values are nice. I like the way you rendered the nose. Mabey think about doing some up-close mouth studies?

Jens... I love the one with markers... looks fantasticle...

Brain... THese are neat, lets see your whole face...

alithenake... good to see you are motivated. You are in the right place to learn. A few things.. YOu will hear this alot, draw from life, or a mirror. Using photos as reference is good at times, but if you draw from life you will learn quicker. There is an explanation, and its not simply because its harder. The idea is to get your mind set to think in terms of 3d. When you draw from life, look at it like you are translating 3d into a 2d picture. It is very hard to explain, but trrust me, all the pros say it so it must be true... Try to really concentrate and focus on your line quality and strength. Your lines look very unsure and sketchy. Look at Jens' portraits to see what I mean. Smooth, solid, single strokes that just look confident. Before diving into color, I suggest doing a bunch of Black and white portraits. There are just too many things to think about when dealing with color, I have been trying for a number of years now and I dont feel very confident with it at all yet. To understand color, you must have a strong hold of value (black, white, and greys). Keep at it bud, lets see you do hundreds of these over the next year or so, I wanna see what you are capable of...

expat... thanks buddy... I really like your last one, has neat flow to it...

Hey Jens,
Thanks for the note about the eyes. The big eye thing is a common mistake and it's been mentioned to me before but I'm pretty sure they're right, I've just got big eyes...I wanna post a photo or a trace over of a photo just so I can get another opinion on whether my eyes are in proportion or not. Hopefully I'll do that with the next couple of SP's I've done...

Jook- I like the latest one. What I would suggest is using your line work and ink washes in closer harmony. For example, there is a grey wash on your left cheek which looks to me like shadow (could also be texture i guess) but it doesn't blend with the area around it much and has a pretty defined edge. Maybe by building up your linework over the top you could blend that tone and use it to describe the form a bit more. I don't think this is so much a technical crit as much as my personal taste so take it or leave it as you want...

Tjendol - In Painter 8, you can set the paper texture to the default 5x5 dots, which is basically a canvas material, and then I used broad cover Guache with a high grain setting and painted lightly. Whalla.

Next time I need to spend more time on the sketch before jumping right in and painting... I agree that the anatomy was off, especially on this one. I actually knew it while I was painting, but I was too damn tired to go back and tweak... my mistake.

Sorry I've been absent. Been studying anatomy like it's going out of style and I find myself passing out before I even get a chance to get here. I did a little form study on my face, tried to break down everything into objects. Not sure how well I did, values could probably use some work. It was a fun exercise though, learned a bit from it.

evolve... That one looks good. I agree that we need to get may rolling, we are still only on page 2 man... lets get going...

Blackhawk... That seems like a good exercise, I am thinking I will try that soon... looks pretty solid to me man...

shadoman... you look heavier and asian in this one... The arm angle is off I think, I am sitting here this moment and I physically cant hold my arm behind my head in that angle. of course I cant dislocate my shoulder either.. I like the highlights on the nose, mabey could have added a bit more highlights to the cheeks, chin and forhead to add a bit more form. looks good though, keep bringing em...

wazzo... I like this sketch. I really like how simple you rendered the neck, very effective. looking pretty solid overall there...

Cue... looking better, if you finish this, you could possibly have a really nice piece to show off...

Lady Lioness... You are improving and your overall proportions are looking solid. you are still getting that skewed to the top right thing going. ARe you holding your paper at an angle? Maybe make a conscious effort to hold the paper directly in front of your face once in a while to make sure it is all correct. hope that made sense. I took your pic in photoshop and moved the top of the pic to the left a bit, took about 10 seconds. Plus your pupils are a bit small... keep it up, you have made leaps and bounds of progress so far. I think you are getting ready to try and tackle 3/4 view of your face by the way....

Hey lads and lassies,

First up, some comments:

Brain- A fellow Aussie, we seem to few and far between around here...funny portrait too

Jens- As usual your SPs are pretty tight, I like the 12/5 particularly. Your portraits usually have a great sense of form- I'd like to see some with more shadow and higher contrast between light and dark areas, I think you'd do that well...

Blackhawk- it's a pretty strong start, are you going to finish it? Or is it just the exercise of building the forms?

jook- you experiment so much i'd surprised if you're not descendant of Dr Frankenstein or something...where do you get your inspiration?

righto, here's a couple of little SP's I did for fun, I didn't use any reference, I was just trying to do something a little different.

expat....thought id throw in my two cents. just keep in mind, at my current exchange, they are only worth about 1.25435 cents.

its hard to tell...if you draw your eyes too big....at first it seems that way, and no, i dont think you have gigantic eyes...i think what might throw it, is it looks like (hard to tell from the photo) your jaw should be bigger.
also, in that last sp...YOUR right eye...the eyelid looks 'longer' than the left. which makes the eye look really long. the left one looks proportional to the photo and portrait. cover one, see what i mean.
also, neck is too narrow, and yeah, ear too small. all those details might play a part.

good luck, hope this helped.

I will post another pic later today, but I first wanted to try and help Expat out...

I agree whole heartedly with Wazzo. YOu are making the bottom half of your face too small. The jaw, chin, and neck should be a bit bigger. for the eyes, they seem to be a little big. I think if you moved your lower eye lid up a bid and added that fold underneath it while keeping your eyes the same length would fix things a bit.

Overall Expat, your SP's are turning out oh so very nice.

and as far as my inspiration? I think the last few have been beer. That and I am just determined to try and use every different form of media that I have. THis little sketchbook that I have dedicated to nothing but selfportraits is all about exploration and experimentation. I wanna have somebody look through the whole thing and have them see something totally different on each page... Other inspirations = the obvoius Android, coro, marko, ect....

Mindflaw... glad to see your face up here, even if it is a small quickie... we gotta get more faces in here.

Hey Jook, thanks. haha yea i know others are getting sick of my plain ol' front portrait. And you were correct on the skewed thing, i didnt use my folder to tilt it up. i usually use a 2 incher to get it up to level.

ladylioness:

Use something to prop up your paper/sketchpad when you drawing. Put it on an easel (I think it's called that...) and every once in a while, close your eyes and look at the picture after a couple of seconds. Sometimes that's all it takes for you to spot a mistake. I know I stare at my pictures for too long, and then I fail to see the mistakes I'm making. Your showing good progress, though!

Here's a WIP from me. I've been very busy lately, so I've been neglecting the forum :bash: bad bad bad d-CepT!

Jook and Wazzo- Thanks a heap for your help- I hadn't considered that I'd been drawing the lower half of my face too small...I'll have to go back and see if that's a consistent mistake and try to fix it next time.
As for the eyes, Wazzo you're right about the one on my right being off...before I posted it I flipped it in photoshop to see if anything would stand out and the eyes jumped out straight away...I didn't notice the weird length but they're also crooked, as in they're at a different angle to the rest of my face.
Again, thanks for your help, I'll keep those things in mind for next time.

dCepT... The drawing underneath is looking solid. I am waiting for the finished version, Like said before, some warmer colors could bring it to life...

LadyLioness.. well, you seemed to point out the problems, so you know what can be improved on. Implement it. for the hair, it would look more natural if you drew it with longer, fewer, and more confident strokes. Dont worry so much about the rendering, get it to look flowing... keep at it...

and a bit of crit...

jens...wow, excellent rendering...yeah, the mind can sure overpower the inspiration. i almost broke up with my girlfriend over the week (a semi good excuse for no posts) and whilst in turmoil, i had no ...reason to do anything. my ambition was sapped. all i could think about was this girl. i see similarities in all walks of life...its easy to get obsessed about something and it drains our focus. great sp jens :)

jook...your attitude is admirable...to just go all out and explore the many facets of creative outlet.. just keep in mind that there is exploring, and then there is work. i say that coz i see a real loose and free feel to your recent sp's...which is great for what it is...but i also see quite a 'charicature' style emerge. its very cartoony and diproportionate. all im saying is dont stress if your just exploring, who cares if the colors arent working...just have fun! there will be a time for work no doubt! :)

rash overdrive...good solid sp. a little more rendering?

lady lioness...i've been watching your progress, like everyone else here....and you are making leaps and bounds in the rendering area. one thing you could do to push that farther, is like you say, dark charcols!! hehe, i know you know. but the other, and in my opinion more important thing you need work on is your proportioning....like everyones been saying hehe. this is what i think you need to do. 1) make circles. lotsa em. follow the tutorial someone posted! you gotta lay downt the proportion lines! ya gotta! ...the one down the middle, the one across the center...and then lay things in place...the tip of the ear at the bottom of the horizontal divider line and on and on. it really is easy....the tricky part comes later when you need to render the parts, where they belong, and make them look like yours! if you want to improve, you gotta work! good luck :)

Pixelhereder you got some nice sp:s going on the ear in the last one imo takes up to much attention my eyes tends to go to much towards the ear and not the face.

Jens: i liked your so called "overrendered" sp

Blackhawk: Ok Iīll try to give you some comments

Canīt give you any crits on your technique you got a good grasp on form and values etc imo opinion anyway, so I say like some others break your comfort zone and go wild with the colours. About the composition I think you should keep the transparency in the right head and take away all but the head, and int the left one you could work with the body like it was made of rubber and was pulled out of a bottle (like a genie).

Anyway some thoughts of major changes I got when looking at it was to bring the left one further back in the painting and change the right head so that it would look at the other one without eyecontact and create the feeling like I was looking trough a window and the right head is the reflection from the window.

Ok Iīm running out of time so I canīt give anymore comments now sorry

Ps: to people posting that we shouldnīt comment him if it was not in colour please donīt kill me

I guess I wasn't really up for the self portrait today. I gave up on the sketch and decided to tweak it in photo shop. this is all that is left of the original sketch.

Maybe I will use this as my Avitar...?

All the others are great! But I noticed how serious we all are...I wonder is it a self concious thing or are we just grumpy

The problem is it's hard to hold a smile or a frown in the same position for a long period of time, so it's just easier to relax all the muscles and draw that.

@pencilherder... only thing that bugs me are the high value strokes on the bridge of his nose and the short one above his left (our right) brow. they draw too much attention imo.

Pixelhearder: Nice placement of the brushstrikes, Thats something I should work on.

Blackhawk: Totally sweet

Jook: Well I'm 17, but I guess I probably look about 15 or something... My family seemed to think It was a good Likeness, I guess I'm just sursed with eternal youth.

a bit of black ink, then colored ink, then some colored pencils for todays...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/sketchidityinkidy2.jpg

Tjendol... this is my fav from you so far. pay close attentin to the shape and size of your eyes, they seem a bit big still...

Atreyu... This is nice. I would have so much funn drawing mysdelf with hair like that man.. a wacom isnt NEEDED for art other than line art, my past 10 or so postings in the self portrait area have been traditional media, and most are done in color... lets see some sucka...

mephistophyls... hey, its great to see you here. lets see some more of ya...

Rash Overdrive... these are great man. you are doing fantastic for your age, I'm sure you hear this a lot too. Its awesome to hear and all I know, but I honestly cant trust my family with their opinions about my art, they would say my shit on a plate is beautiful if I told them I made it... I gotta say that the textures on your recent one are awesome.. keep these faces coming man...

sone_one... You are doing great with your values still, but this time your eyes are looking a lot better than before. Great job man. Keep your eye open for detail and this improvement I am seeing will keep coming...

Jens.. its great to see you throw in some creativity in your SP this time. It was executed nicely... Does it make me homo if I say I love you?

Cue... While I am glad to see your face here and all, I do gotta ask if a five minute sketch is all the time you had to put into it. It was on its way to being a nice finished piece. The eyes were drawn nicely and the measurements for the most part seem pretty tight as well. I think it could have benefited from some stronger and more planned out lines instead of all that sketchiness... I am awaiting some more stuff from ya man....

She Who Says Ni!... Shruberry! Its a pretty eye. how dare you tease me with so little of your face. show me the rest of your face.

Brain... Thats a clever way of going about it and it was pulled of well. I think that compositionally the blue along the bottom is REALLY distracting though...

pixelherder... SOLID! I love your confidence on brush strokes man.. nice values as well...

Blackhawk... update update update update update update update update update update update update update update update update update update. THis is looking really nice, the composition is so fun...

Ni*... good to see you here again as well. you and your crazy colors man... the ear seems a bit big is this one...

Mr.Brian... hey, this is very nice man. Good rendering... please show me more of you...

Jook: You were probably right..I painted the eyes a little too big and in the sp before this one I look like ten years yonger too..lol.

I like the style of yours, although the mouth seems a bit flat, like it's sticked onto the face.

I guess that's because you used some highlights on the forehead, cheekbones and nose..but not on the lips. Other than that..keep it up!

Simwerks... You communicated that hard to draw angle very well. I also like that you used different line widths and weights. The main problem I see is in your brush choice. If using a mouse, it is hard to get nice and fluid brush strokes. It might be a better idea to use a bursh that doesnt really show your strokes like that, something like an airbrush. At least try to plan out each and every stroke if you are gonna use a brush, try to make the strokes follow the contours of your face.. good stuff though, keep them coming man...

Ni*... tis a good start man...

Tjendol... these are very nice. your rendering is getting better, as is your attention to details. keep it up man...

Hey Ni*, I think this is my favorite of yours yet!
Shapes are nice and clean, good structure.
I especially like how you handled the hair.
Watch the ear placement--the top of the ear should line up with your eyebrow and the bottom of the ear should line up with the bottom of your nose.
I know you're tilting your head back, but I still think the ear's too far down.
Regardless of that, good job!

My update, sorry, really haven't worked on it much, been doing some commissioned portraits for some families. I will finish this one up before the weekend though and get another extended SP started. I'll try to comment on a few SP's though. Sorry for the size too

http://images.snitzerart.com/poop5.jpg

Ni - First off, great, absolutely great. Your getting better on each successive one. Nose needs work, try concentrating more on the form for now, don't worry about the nostrils until the final details. I find they can be a bit distracting in the early stages of a portrait. Keep up the work though, your definitely pushing along.

Brain - Watch out for the axis of your features in this last portrait. Everything is on a different horizontal plane and it's all mushing around. Also, conserve your values. Try to use maybe 3 values (not including highlights and cast shadows) and let the edges between the value shapes do more for the form instead of blending everything together. It gives it an over-rendered look when everything is blended as is. Keep the long studies going though. It's good of you to finish, something I rarely do and now am working on :D

Jook - Thank you. Your traditional SP's are crazy, good experimentation. Maybe try working in more careful drawing into your traditional ones. No one says you can't practice while still having fun, which looks like you are, definitely a good sign. Keep it up man.

Jens - Great job, excellent improvement on your SP's. Were you the one that gave me the chocolate in Amsterdam? I can't remember if it was you. If it is, I've spent the last two months trying to find the stuff here in the US, I can't :o

Cue - I use Painter 7, it is a mix of Oil Pastel, my own variant on it, and sharp chalk, my own variant on that one. I customized a lot of my frequent brushes, so the originals won't really react like mine. Be careful of proportions in yours and get some more confident linework going. Right now everything is 50 lines on one another and the portrait feels flat. Experiment with line weights along the same curves and lines and try to get a feel for what gives your portrait better form just through line. Keep it going.

More comments on next update, too much to keep up on, you guys and gals are rocking. Goodnight everyone.

hey new to the thread. just wanted to make my voice known.

Jens- I like what you have been doing, but you could push your shading just a little bit more. your values are too close together in some areas. a good trick is to squint your eyes while looking at the piece. If the shading from light to dark seems to blur into one tone of light or one tone of dark, then correct it accordingly.

Atreyu-really like the green SP! can't wait to see more.

tjendol- you have come a long way since the start of the month! adding the tops of your shoulders definately helped to ground the SP. particularly like the one done in blues. you've got your values down pretty well just keep an eye on your proportioning and the curves of your face.

Blackhawk- Damn!

okay that is my 2 cents for now.

its good to see the big surge of activity after this thread slowed down for a while. there are alot of new faces too.

just some comments today,

emily- thanks for the positive feedback, as for the ear, i went back and measured it as best i could and i think it is too big, thanks for pointing that out.

jetpack- thanks, glad people liked it:)

brain- nice subtle shades on that one but the blocky background and scratchy lines are a bit distracting, try to get the lines to flow and be more fluid.

jens- your pencil work is getting stronger and stronger, i'd like to see how you handle a portrait of someone else. stop scribbling in the hair though :p

jook- i'm tempted to try that technique, it looks fun. try and retain the structure and solidity that you had in your digital SPs though, some of the real media ones look a bit more like graphic compositions, which is cool if thats what you're going for. ach, ignore me, enjoy :-)

blackhawk- you're right about the nose in my last one it is a bit off, thanks for the feedback too.
that study is looking great, i'm reluctant to comment too much because i dont know where you are going with it, all i notice is that, at the moment the composition looks like you are leaning back looking in a mirror which gives the pose a slightly uncomfortable feel. excellent work though, can't wait to see it complete.

cue- thanks, i may work more on that one, but it is som easy to start again with digital stuff that i rarely go back to complete things.

atreyu- nice one, it is a shame you stopped, that has a real feeling of you worshipping the mighty wacom :-p you should paint in a wacom stylus floating in yur hands..

phew, i'm done

cheers

Sorry for the long absence. Been busy (insert lame excuse here).

But I've been drawing even though I haven't posted here. So here's one I did tonight in charcoal. I did it on an A3 paper, so I could just fit my mug on the scanner, hence the too tight crop. :)

Crits are always welcome!

There are too many to give comments to, but in no particular order:

Atreyu: I'm diggin' on the one you did with the wacom! Do finish it up, so we can see it done!

Blackhawk: Your full-body SP has a lot of potential! You've captured the light very well! I'm looking forward to more detail! Keep 'em coming!

jook: Eclectic styles, dude! Your last one is a bit crooked, though. Your chin is placed too far to our right.

wizard of koz: I really like the dark expression in your pieces. This might just be a matter of taste, but the red and blue one might be a bit too dark, though. Bring your face out from the background just a little more.

jens: solid as ever! I like the overrendered one. The last one, just from your front looks a bit...cartoony(?) compared to your usual ones... Also, try to render the volume of your hair. Your doing it with the reat of your face, so the hair looks a little flat... :)

Mad props to everyone, though! I want to be as active as you guys are!

dCept, yea i know problem with hair is that it takes about the same time to render as the face, but i'm gonna try do do it more. I love your last one, there's something really facinating about the eyes. Some parts look a bit smudgy and blurry around the nose and the shadow side

Ni* the hair yes, i gotta stop making excuses and just do it :D
