--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROUND #225 VOTING

Topic: the alchemists golden companion

Deadline for the voting: August 24th

Requirements this week...

- the creature must be made entirely of gold.

- the creature must be in the smaller size range. Keep the size comparable to that of the range of dog sizes. Anywhere in that range is acceptable.

- the creature is mild mannered and friendly. Stay away from vicious violent designs. This familiar is not a fighter, it's a helper.

- like last week you are not required to include the alchemist in your image. But you can if you would like to. Also you can include the philosophers stone in your image, but like the alchemist this is not required.

Concept: Gylden valp
As above - so below... Gylden valp began like so many alchemist's musings - a hazy hallucination brought on by the philosopher's stone- yet once sobered up the alchemist found that his golden puppy didn't vanish but rather stayed around. So did the gold the alchemist had managed to create that fateful evening - but damned if he could remember how he did it. Gylden valp remembered however and much to the alchemist's delight.

Concept: The Golden Anteater
It began as a rather filthy junk of iron successfully turned to gold, and became alive! Over the years it grew and become this strange but remarkable golden anteater that does a very good job at keeping the floor clean of... anything really. Including the most unfortunately toxic alchemic potions.

Concept: The Mighty Philosopher´s Smelter

“–A pound of gold for a golden coin… I guess we have a deal? –the alchemist looked to the knight with a funny look in his eyes. Fast as hell, the knight dropped a clinking bag onto the table full of sculpted runes, and started to rub his hands while smiling with greediness.”
The Mighty Philosopher´s Smelter appears when an alchemist achieves his greatest goal and makes the Philosopher´s Stone work for the first time. The first creation coming out the alchemy laboratory is a small and extremely powerful creature entirely made of gold, and its size and form depends on how much /what kind of gold the alchemist invests in its creation. How many magicians and alchemists killed themselves after a whole life of saving gold, and after a failed Stone experiment (with an incredible amount of volatilized precious mineral), we´ll never know.
That sacrifice is worth well, cause this little creature will act as an amazing fusion tool and the fire it expels will allow the alchemist to create great bunches of gold and ancient and very complex formulae. With a side effect, the creature consumes itself and needs a minimal but constant gold feed.

Concept: Golden chameleon

The golden chameleon is alchemist's perfect pet. No one knows why, but as it touch something, success of transmutations seems to grow significantly. Unless if it's pure psychology, and the créature has no impact.
Anyway, feeding it with golden crickets has an heavy cost.

Concept: Yng-sens's Vyrner

The Oriental alchemist's Yng-sen had little luck in his previous experiments, mostly because he insisted on using cow's dung as the basis for his research into the fabled Philosopher's stone. He finally met with success one day when the village children replaced the cow dung with some of their own as a practical joke, producing not only the Philosopher's stone but a magical golden creature that would be heavily involved in his future experiments involving cow urine.

Concept: Golden Long-Limbed Finger Pointer
After finding he had created the famed philosopher stone, the legendary alchemist noticed a small creature hiding in a dark corner of his laboratory. On further inspection it appeared to be a strange looking gangly thing with arms and legs long and thin. No bigger than a small dog, it stood there trembling. The alchemist learned to love the creature as his own. "Fantastic! A helper!" he thought to himself. Alas the only thing the creature could do was point.

Concept: Aureusaur

After the philosopher stone was concocted, instant precipitation formed. A carcass of a small cat had been on the Alchemist's table, and as the precipitation formed and mutated the carcass, the carcass stood on its own, with newly added metal appendages. It is to note that the long tail, as written in the Alchemist's journal, seems to be an umbilical cord to the newly born.

The creature is a constant companion to the Alchemist, and for the most part, is a valuable asset in organizing and keeping things tidy surprisingly enough! In addition, what better way to hide the Stone... then in plain sight?

Concept: Golden Stitch Beetle
The Golden stitch beetle secrets liquid gold that quickly hardens into a fine thread that it uses to stitch or sew golden fabric that is stronger then steel because of the fine weave. It also stops electricity and protects vs fire.
It only makes this fabric when the alchemist wishes which is often since it's his new favorite material to work with in his experiments.

Oho's are small, wise, and very obliging kind of familiars. Having one of them as a companion is a dream, and desire of all wizards, and alchemists around the world.
Sadly for them getting one is very hard, and its not just because they don't know the proper recipe. These one's who knows the recipe, also are cautious of making use of it, because the major recipe is... the the alchemist first born child.

These few who decide to go through the full process and sacrifice he's own child, are promoting in the art of Alchemy very fast and soon thanks to the wise advices of friendly Oho's, are available to accomplish most difficult alchemical tasks. Oho's are not only very useful, but also happy and cheerful companions, but sadly the grand master's alchemist's faces are always sad and gloomy.

Concept: Treasure Climber

Favored familiars of all self respecting alchemists. The six legged treasure climbers are helpful yet slightly spoiled and picky critters. They accept only silver as their food yet still they have to be persuaded into eating it. The treasure climbers excel in many different tasks while helping their masters but they are best known for their outstanding memory. This allows alchemists to "dump" their thoughts into them. The creatures can't talk however, so getting the information out of them can sometimes prove tricky.

Concept: Gelboros
An alchemist was finally able to incubate the mythic philosophers stone. However, much to his surprise, the gold used in the stone's creation surrounded the stone and formed a delicate golden creature. The alchemist kept the amazing creature as his familiar. Being an extremely clever creature it helped aid him in the creation of many extraordinary discoveries. As the alchemist grew old an weary he realized his faithful companion, sustained by the stone, was an immortal being. For the alchemist's last experiment he created a second philosophers stone and thus a second Gelboros so that the two golden creatures could forever have a companion. Since the death of their original master it is said that the two creatures will appear to and aid an alchemist who they deem worthy before once again disappearing without a trace.

Concept: Flaxen Fowl

With a bang and a flash of light, smoke overwhelmed the entire room: Poof!

"I have done it!" yelled the alchemist.

He opened the window and the smoke cleared. He then noticed broken glass and singe marks on the floor.

"My beaker..."

The alchemist suddenly noticed that a huge bird like creature was perched on his coat hanger.

They both viewed each other and the alchemist heard a voice in his head.
"That was quite a faulty attempt to make gold." The Flaxen Fowl cocked it's head.

Concept: Useless Toad-beast Assistant
Weighing in at about 10 pounds, this creature is very fearful and timid, its brain is about the size of a pea so it is very forgetful…. It is afraid of anything that moves and is almost completely useless. It likes to have its belly rubbed/polished…. The alchemist has been unable to create another golden pet…looks like he is stuck with this one...

Concept: NickoDemus

NickoDemus was just another one of the little laborers sorting all the worldly possessions for the vaults of the dark lord in the place where most people retire to: Hell.

He particularly had a fascination for counting all the new comer's gold pieces. He dreamed of making the shiny stuff for himself.

Demons often vanished from down under. Experiments the Dark Lord loaned out to his minions on earth were the cause of this. Nick's day finally came when he was randomly chosen by an alchemical transaction gone wrong using goat ball sack hair.

The experiment failed, the philosophers stone was obliterated and its remnants became direct extensions of Nick's body.

When he glows...metals obey his command and change to gold!

Design: horns for looking like a badass demon. Goat face/body: goats are the symbol of the dark lord himself. Wings...well if he's going to be a companion gliding helps a lot.

I voted for lkjhgfdsa, Ricardo Robles, Golden Serpent and Lawvalamp. Beautiful work everyone!

I voted for
lkjhgfdsa - Loved it from concept - finish.
V-lkry - Can't stop looking at his from limbs, makes me wonder if it can fly or is instead super agile. Either way I wouldn't wanna be alone with one.
tsabu- I really spent some time looking at all the small details like runes and gold markings.
Sealegs- Always Impressed with sealeg's work. Definitely inspires me to push myself.

To everyone else - Great job, I liked all of them this round and I like the good turnout. It's seems like more WIP's posts there are the better the end results.

Well done guys! Great to see the 3rd in a row multi-vote round!! Some great entries as always, Ricardo Robles, GoldenSerpent and Sealegs had the top three in my opinion!

Ricardo Robles: really like how the creature seems to be made of several gold trinckets, some parts are looking a bit unfinished but nothing major and still got my vote

Golden Serpent: Very cool dude, Really neat concept giving it cat-like features and the long tail wrapping around and into the creature's mouth is a nice touch. the background is just as impressive as the creatures in the foreground.

Sealegs: Really funny idea, this topic had everyone's push towards being a helper creature and you went just the opposite way. The creature reminds me of Jabba The Hut actually, cept with more limbs. The rendering of materials is fantastic, looks almost like actually frog skin in some places as well. Good job mate!!

Honourable mentions:
Lawvalamp-didn't vote for you because I felt I've seen this creature before, and he seems a bit hellish which slightly draws of topic slightly, but the rendering is probably the best in this round, looking forward to future stuff from you, I'd also like to see you participate in the wips thread if not for your own improvement perhaps to help sorry chaps like myself, lol
v-lkry-solid entry, like the idea that it's a little dragon, but because it is a dragon I didn;t vote for it because I'd like to see people flex there creative muscles
El Khan-I like this scene very cool very touching. Old people love to have little critters around, especially yappy little mutts that bark at everything and annoy the hell out of everybody...
lkjhgfdsa: really kool, the eyes are a little creepy, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what u were going for. This guy reminds me of meowth for some reason.

Very interesting entries this round guys!
special ones for me:
lkjhgfdsa, crazy creature, maybe a bit too much humoristic, but it perfectly fits with the kind of creature an alchemist could have as pet or helper. the arms pose gives an interesting arcane/mistic feeling to your piece. In this round I tried to keep sticked to made it "entirely made of gold", and there are some hairy surfaces which take me out of that. There we have hair made of gold but maybe the effect wasn´t 100% well achieved in my opinion.. although the effect is very good in the horns and golden coins. Having the creature sitting on the top of a mountain of golden coins is cool, gives a good sense of abundance!
Grimstitch, The concept maybe is not very powerful but i liked it from the beginning, it looks so tender and the warm light & the environment gives it a realistic look. The "gold" effect wasnt very well achieved, though.
Golden Serpent beautiful image, very storytelling and well rendered. The gold effect was very well done. The description was very interesting too. I voted for you.
Lawvalamp, the rendering and execution is admirable, the concept is less interesting. Looks a bit classic demonic goat creature, and i don´t see a clear skin made of gold. The creature doesn´t seems to be the of helpful kind. Anyways the background is nicely done as well, and the coins are a good touch!

But cool entries everyone, you did great!

Thx for the feedback Ricardo - I'm usually known for having realistic rendering skills, but time (and a rushed concept) just wasn't on my side this week. Glad I got in there though.

Went for yours and Golden Serpent. I could really get the sense of both being helpful and friendly, petlike along with some great execution - got my vote.

lawvalamp - yours is very well done as well, dynamic, but just didn't seem to fit the brief.
