Hey guys I'm looking for examples of famous or obscure epic greek sculptures like Laocoon and his sons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laocoon), David or the Farnese Hercules (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farnese_Hercules). I think they make excellent drawing material as everything is so well defined (anatomy and composition).

I can’t believe nobody has replied to this thread! Oh well, better late than never. I just took an art history class over the summer so some of this is fresh on my mind. These sculptures are pretty famous, so if you’ve taken an art history course or two you probably know about them already. I won’t list the ones you’ve already mentioned.

From the Classical Period:

Kritios Boy
warrior A from riace
zeus from cape Artemision
Discobolos (Discus Thrower) by Myron
Doryphorus (Spear Bearer) by Polykleitos

Late Classical:

Aphrodite of Knidos by Praxiteles
Hermes and the infant Dionysos by Praxiteles (It’s also worth looking up Silenus and the infant dionysos)
Apoxymenos (Scraper) by Lysippos

Hellenistic:

Of course I have to mention Nike of Samothrace. I love the wings!
Gaul killing himself and his wife
The Dying Gaul

Republican Rome:

Head of a Man known as Brutus <--This is a bust

Roman Empire:

Augustus of primaporta
Commodus as Hercules <--bust

Gothic:

In my opinion there’s not much from these times, but I guess Ekkhard and Uta from the Naumburg Cathedral is worth a mention. I kind of like Uta, the lady.

From the Renaissance:

Donatello’s David

Baroque Period:

Gianlorenzo Bernini, Cardinal Scipione Borghese <--This is a bust
Gianlorenzo Bernini, David <--I LOVE this sculpture. He made this when he was only 24!!
Gianlorenzo Bernini, Ecstasy of Saint Teresa

Bernini is the man. You should also check out his Apollo and Daphne sculpture. He also created the La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, which is a neat fountain in the Piazza Navona.

Oh, forgot to mention Aulus Metellus: The orator and the Apollo Belvedere. Anyway, I’m not sure if you were looking for really dramatic sculptures or anything like that, but hopefully this list will help a bit.
