After yesterdays failed attempt at a Balrog I was keen to make a good go of this. I'm fairly pleased how it turned out.

http://pookabin.com/images/DSG/DSG429_Metamorphosis.jpg

plaf - Another Balrog? :D Sorry I don't getit, but i like the smoke.

artistanbul - Wonderful expression on his face.

village idiot - Love the style of that. It really suits the topic. I like the subtle addition of the legs.

mr Man - Here's (http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/metamorphosis/) a nice flash adaptation of The Metamorphosis.

Some great work so far.

lpetty - very cool. Has the feel of a painting done completely with burnt sienna.

Oregano - really captures the flavor of the book. nice narrative quality.

Gumdrop - yeah, you should be please. Great work. It has a poweful emotional response and some nifty brush work too!

village idiot - great line work, really captured what he's feeling at the moment.

back in school i didnt like kafka... so i did a pretty generic, unoriginal human-bug-thingy.

good work so far everyone.

@Ipetty: wicked... i like it a lot

@oregano: nice sketch, like how hes "hiding" in his coat ^^

@ gumdrop: you nailed it! great piece!

@ village idiot: hehe that mood is kafkaesk

Nothing new, just the assignment...
But I love almost everyone's contributions today.
Of course, we've all had enough practice with this topic; I'd think we should all be a able to handle it.

Hay all,

Its 6:59 am, and do you know if your turned in to a bug or not?..

http://www.digitalmack.com/Pages/TempPostings/Bugman_bed.jpg

I was thinking that this story is not atomically correct, I mean, if he went threw metaphors would there be his cast off skin and such laying around.. and I think not that it is a happy little event you can sleep threw..

Sone_one – I bet finding a pair of pants that fit in the morning would be difficult if you looked like that.

ArtoriusRex – it’s a great start, try and push the edges of the light and darks a little more.

Freakt – It looks like he is a rocket bug with a jet propelling him up the wall, work of smoothing the shading across his back a bit to give him (it) more of a round feel.

Ipetty – I take it this is during the change when he is fling about changing?

Oregano – yup its true, people these days just don’t seem to stop and take notice of the big bugs walking amongst us.

Jslayer – try and separate you objects with more shadows, like maybe one on the wall behind the bug man to bring him out a bit, as he is blended in to the background a little too much.

MR Man – it has potential…

Jermainevl – I like the texture it looks like it was hand painted... Was it?

GumDrop – kick ass no doubt, I would look about the same if I awoke like that as well. And thanks for the link .. I didn’t know what this was about till I saw the movie..

Village Idot – love the stile (and the shot), it not one I see to much. Kind of looks like a Alice and wounded land picture…

Artstanbul – Very graphic wood cut like nice..

Plaf – it would suck to be him…

I'm off for now... I'll work on this one some more later (no really, I will this time :) )

[Edit] Okay, I polished it up some. @SPACEWALKER - Your comment about the family got me thinking that I've been taking the easy way out on a lot of sketches lately instead of diving into the material and trying to do something interesting with it... I think it's time to challenge myself & stop doing such comfortable work.

http://www.atomicagedog.com/art/dailysketch/metamorphosis.jpg

@ lpetty: It looks brutal and violent. Yours directly inspired mine.
@ Gumdrop: Awesome as usual. I can remember when you were first developing this style, and now look how far it's come... really amazing.
@ village idiot: I really like this one, more so than your last couple in fact. It feels really professional and confident. The only thing I would change is the bedside table. Its borders should be better defined, imo.

just for your information the story isnt just about the guy turning into a bug but also his familys reaction to it, i was even told that the was about kafkas personal relationship with his father. just to make the topic a little more interesting :)

My first post. 45 Minutes. When I studied Kafka in High School we came up with alternate endings. This is his sister as a bug.

Thanks for your comments. I am pleased that you guys think I'm making headway with my style. I'm getting there as far as sketches are concerned, but how it will translate into a finished piece remains unclear.

jermainevl - A bug in a suit is always good. What is this artrage people keep mentioning?

Mr Man - The hands cupped to the head add alot and is something I should have done myself. Wish you had more time to flesh out the details.

JSlayer - Love the face on that and the "I love bugs" sign. Did you spend more time on this than usual? It really shows if you did.

Oregano - I really like the mood of this. A bug about town. He looks sinister in a subtle way. The pape is a nice touch.

lpetty - You swine! This is so good. the colours, the texture, the brushes... everything. Looks like he's erupting into bug form.

Freakt - Playboy? Shouldn't it be bugboy? haha. Hope you come back and colour it. I want to know what colour you use for the soiling he's done on the wall! :D

ArtoriusRex - Haha... here in the UK it's midnight, and your pic is making me feel sleepy. Great emotion and I like the pajamas.

sone_one - Very nice sketch. the anatomy is solid.

auden100 - Such a great character. the huge eyes and the tiny mouth are real nice.

Antilight77 - Well to answer your question: I often feel like a bug in a run when I'm making good with the pillows, so yeah... I know alright! :) The shedded skin is a great touch. i like the angle too.

Railboy - That is really horrible... in a complimentary way ofcourse. Gotta love those eyes!

eygji - That's a great idea to brainstorm a topic with different takes. I must try that.

TheDarkWhisperer - Please tell me you're a Ian Miller fan. I love mouths done like that. Nice eyes.

Sapphire - The simple addition of rivets is very effective, and that big horn is cool.

plaf - Great abstract style. Makes me look at it for a long time and find more than one way to interpret the shapes. I do this alot with the patterns on the tiles in my bathroom... but I won't go there! :o

buzzz3d - Hehe... sweet! There's alot of character in those hands/legs.

livid_devil21 - Is she resting on her elbow? Kinda hard to read.

DocBoom -Ooh that's nasty. Mom & Dad are in for a ral suprise. Nicely done and a good idea.

Thanks for the comments on my sketch today everyone. Incidently, I've never read Kafka  That will change here shortly, as Kafka is one of my wife's favorite writers.

JSlayer, you're on the right track. Draw *EVERY DAY*, and if you don't have time to draw, THINK about drawing. Draw in your head. ALL the time. You'll get to where you want to be far sooner than you think :D

Cool work today. bugs are fun.

A couple of items stood out for me:

Gumdrop - I really like the fairy tale feeling of yours. Its whimsical and disturbing at the same time.

Docboom - I really like your composition and staging. Very Horror movie. Reminds me that I was thinking that I might've done my piece in a german expressionist horror movie type of style, but I got too lazy to do the research.

Thanks. Sometimes I go into a frenzy, and I just have to paint. That is called an artrage..:D
No seriously. It's a computer programme like Painter. But a very very light version of it, it has few options but it's nice to practice with in my opinion (although I had some troubles with it :( ) You can download it here: http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html Oh and the best thing is: it's free :)
