I was Saved by a trip to the stuffed animals museum, otherwise I'd only have one Foster wannabe page worth posting...

the thingamajig with the long tail in the air was drawn during the mammals presentation. It was moving around while I tried to draw it. Really hard.

Your sketching style reminds me of my sketching style a bit. I'm not nearly as skilled as you anatomy/experience wise, so good stuff. I need to work on the chest area, so your drawings help a bunch. Is your anatomy based on Bridgman anatomy?

Iconoclast: Yeah the anatomy studies are all Brigman's Constructive Anatomy.

Gaboartpage: Look forward to meeting you in Austin!!

been too busy working on school finals for the last two weeks. have to combine the two updates into one, barely had time to open the sketchbook, have to pad this update with a few lifedrawings and some drawings done for the animation final.

only one new page and revisited an old sketch from two weeks back.
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/sketchbook31.jpg
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/bot.jpg

the first lifedrawing is 20min I think. the rest are 5min and 10mins. I'm getting slower and slower for some reason.

couple painted backgrounds composited with 3d in the final pass. that's why there's big empty spaces in the middle. the final composite the 3d elements stick out like sore thumb, but it was fun attempting.

SeraphSword & Icon: they're back now. I used to rotate out the old images due to limited webspace. 5megs from school account. But now I'm spilling the over flow into the animation club webspace since half of that never get used anyway. The portrait is one of the life models we get at school, he's got pretty chisled features like Andrew. He's probably 10~15 years older than Andrew.

cotron: damn that was you in the plane? I thought some dude had left a steaming pile in the lav since our seats were pretty close to the back. great meeting you and the other folks from virginia in Austin!

Yina: thanks!

Meta: man, that was hilarious! I wish I could be as quick thinking on my toes and generous with compliments as you were. Thanks for the advice. I had the same exact feeling leaving austin. I need to work alot more than I'm working now.

elboy: Hey Roy, good meeting you in Austin. I should be doing more paintings in the coming up months. Signed up to go to a local painting workshop on saturdays starting the 17th; and only classes 2 days out of the week. maybe I'll have something worthwhile.

wow, that's a lot of stuff, but I guess it is about a month's worth of work. It's good to see all those studies. There's one guy in particular on one of your pages that I really like, but I won't bother to point him out. Also, do I see some inkwash (doesn't really look like markers, but I guess it could be...)? Anyway, good meeting you too, Noah. I'll be looking forward to new stuff (like some pretty paintings).

prawda
July 12th, 2004, 03:58 PM
wow the only thing i can crit about your wonderful stuff is that i think that your ink work isnt that good as your pencil sketches the thin line of the pen doesnt seem to work with your style ( i remarked that on the selfportrait and the hand studies with the face on it ).

hito, you've got some great sketches here man. Lots of variation and experimentation is one of the most important things in my book. I love those life drawings w/ charcoal and that huge ass minotaur with the skull head is fucking menacing. This last page is one of my favorites, it reminds me of a guy on the web that i can't think of right now. i'll post the link when i remember.

good meeting you in Austing too, and as Jetpack's campaign manager, we thank you for your support (;) he hasn't commented on it yet, i hope everythings alright.)

Wow Hito - I'm impressed. I go away for a few weeks and come back to see you're really coming along. Your figure and cast studies are great (the feet are excellent). I really like some of your imaginative work, as well.

keep working the pen - I alternate between pen and pencil when I work and i think it's good to learn to work with something that isn't very forgiving. your last few pages of pen stuff really rock.

I'd say you need to learn to get better tonal range in both mediums, that's one of the things I fight with so often!! With pencils, I often have nothing darker than a mid tone and I almost NEVER go black. with my inks, everything is stark black and white - my hatching needs improvement. You're ahead of me, and you're headed in the right direction.

I've got your back, march on, brutha!

hito
July 26th, 2004, 09:54 PM
Maldrin man you hit the nail on the head about tonal ranges. my leads are HB lead and it doesn't get any darker no matter how hard I press. I'll pick up some 4B leads and see how it goes. I'm pretty heavy handed and so hesitant to go with darker leads for fear of getting too dark too soon. It already happens with the pen stuff... too dark too soon, not enough tones between the white of the paper and the nearly blacks. :/ I'll keep at it though.

thanks for the encouragement

wow, awesome heads. I need to do that badly :nohope: . Thanks for the inspiration.

On the still life, the vase seems to go flat for me where it is above the shoe. The right side looks pretty good, but I think since the shading only is applied above the shoe, it looks odd (instead of running down to the shoe, where my eyes tell me it should go). Does that make sense? The top is also really well done.

Cool stuff, keep stickin with.

I apologize for the lack of replies. I tend to avoid reading comments since I get air-headed easily and still get defensive sometimes. I tend to just sit quiet and go back later more objectively.

sone_one - thanks man. I'm envious of your economy of lines. I waste too many lines, bad habit that I compensate with heavy darks... another bad habit. :/

liam.c - lol. I dno't know about that... Gabo is the one that makes me look lazy. he's the one that's driving me to draw more. almost feel like a race hahah.

Zebzfree & maxtormer thanks man, I feel like I need to be doing alot more. Trying to slowly increase the time I spend drawing each week.

Jetpack - the texture is just the paper, I wanted to get rid of it but was afraid of messing it up so I left it without doing crosshatching. The life drawing has too many marks and the good marks are lost. Orban made that observation in CA Acad. I think I'm getting better with fluid lines, but still have the bad habit of relying on alot of overlapping. I should tatoo the word "Economize" between my thumb and index finger so I see it everytime I draw.

with the skull, the flowing hair nude girl
is great, but i think the ribcage
and waist treatment should be applied
to the whole piece because its good
volume shape depict face is great too !!!!

Good exercise of the piece before
girl angel, that wireframe treatment
shows your interest in shape depict

angel girl is a fire & ice surprise dude
cause you start seeing the lovely wings and
pose and then oh shit what happened to the leg !!??
its great cause it made me react dude
thats the artist goal :) great drawing

The Sargent copies are great
maybe the thing to take care
are VALUE/COLOR balance
i dont remember exactly
the paintings but im sure sargent
picked a focal point , for example
in the spanish lady first i see there
are lots of whites everywhere
and maybe toning down some of
them with the exception of the
focal point would give more depth
to the mastercopies , i like
her dress strokes very expressive
maybe you should apply that to the
flower & kids mastercopy, i think
the brushstrokes there are not as
strong as in the spanish lady

May 5th, 2004, 05:09 PM
5th drawing with the Bod Dalton
has some great face studies
your really nailed very well those
eye lids Noah very cool pencil treatment

Side view sword girl is great
i like her face proportions
and body language, also the perpendicular
contrast between sword and legs
very cool demond skull also

Hey i remember this still life ( weekend 5/02/04 )
from the painting thread, just check again those
whites everywhere and values, maybe a softer
treatment to shadow would work a little better

May 12th, 2004, 10:46 PM

You know what i like a lot
about your studies, that you
are freaking including perspective
lines in a lot of them i can see
your worries about it, dude you are
on the right track its just practicing
and keep sharpening . . .
cool animal studies
i like the bird one its nice

May 19th, 2004, 05:56 PM
Thats why ribcages are soooo
cool dude , CONTRAST dark and
white values, very amazing studies
of muscle structure

and that demond 6 leg muscle
freak is massive, the underline thin
everywhere makes me wonder
about your procedures, and search
this is very good , more please

hahaha reptile porn , good one dude

eath Mask of Ulysses Grant
thats what i mean, very good
piece Noah, in the chin there are
some bright values but you didnt
choose to place a white wich is good
it gives much more atmosphere, ilike
the warm color choice on right side
versus the cool left side, good
transition . . .

May 26th, 2004, 09:33 PM
mmmmm been busy with studies eh?
great exercises my fav is the last
laying woman cause her head structure
is so solid i see your search for those
annoying angles that make us suffer
solid curve and straight lines
i like her chest too and hips depict

June 2nd, 2004, 05:35 PM
Hey hey whuz that ... extreme beauty
page is great dude, more please the left
top character is great dude i like the costume
and shape contrasts and on the next page
the front side view woman has great etnicy
and render very cool, you can tell
its the same person very characteristic design

June 16th, 2004, 07:38 PM
WTF life drawings are great dude . . chalk ?
pastel ?? conte ?? i like the side woman
good line variety and well placed dark background
but damn the other ones are damn good too
amazing sense of shape and
good line sensibility that foot study is great !!!!!
starting to control pressure management on media right ??

July 12th, 2004, 02:16 PM
Wow Austin batch !!
the values on the wood sword model pose
on the roght are great specially his forehead
the rounded strokes look great

Austin Sat, in 202[?]
Hey that boxed vehicle looks good
very secure straight lines dude

very cool knees studies im diging
the understructure of those also
the feet ones
"trying to be like metalwind " page
is not unsuccessful is freaking cool
i like scapula one and the articulations
good volume depict even tough is just
silhouette linework, very good page

July 19th, 2004, 08:43 PM
PEN WORK !!!!!!!!!!
the first page is sooooo F**ng cool
no second chance right dude?
i like everything here because you used
pen for following plane angles and shape depict
the woman face has cool face muscle shapes
shoe boots are solid also

August 2nd, 2004, 07:59 PM
Heres a step jump Noah
your art is different here specially

cody - thanks for stopin by man. Keep up the good work on your thread also!

Josef K - Thanks for the encouragement. I don't know for sure where all this will take me. But whereever that is will probably be better than where I am now skill-wise. That's the most important thing.. so long as I'm changing and going somewhere, where I go isn't as important.

GABO GABO GABO Thanks a million for taking the time to write all this comment man! You're right on about the sargent copies. the kids in the garden was the first and the worst. The Capri Girl one was the best out of the lot, though my color is still off on her. The life drawings are most likely compressed charcoal, maybe conte; I don't remember for sure, I'd know once I sniff the paper LOL. I got a folder for your sketchbook thread. Have to try doing some portrait studies like you sometime. They look sweet. Thanks again man.

This week's stuff. About the same amount as last week...

SP, 90min... looks like me, another 10 years older [or maybe that is just how I look, deadbeat expressionless]. Hehe. Modeling of the nose is alright, the eyes and mouth are a bit wonky. Overall facial shape is a tad longer than it actually is.

Architecture stuff from magazine. Neat looking buildings all of these. Especially the soccer stadium middle top and the Kunsthaus under it.

Old guy is a refed drawing. Forgot where I got the image off of. One of the links from referrences section I think. Girl is out of the head. Not as great as I would like her to be, I'm still a ways off. But still, this is probably the best page thus far in my current sketchbook.

But those mecha are prime, me thinks this is something you should develop.

Another week, another update.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragements. I'm seeing progress, very invigorating, also very humbling, the better things seem to turn out, the more mistakes I see when I look back at the images.

Looks like I'll make my goal of finishing off this current sketchbook by the end of this qtr Sept 17th.

Last weeks mecha draw-off with Eric, "Big Ass Space Ship", Markers and Pen, little bit of gouache, and touched up in PS a little.
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/sketchbook095.jpg

couple cyborgs, copied them off the dry-erase board where I was doodling them with the marker. Once you get used to it, its actually very easy to make changes on the dry-erase board. There was another big boob anime gun chick drawing that a number of people contributed to... Hopefully I'll have a link for that up by next week.

Hito, I always love browsing this thread, seriously. How do you start developing your concept sketches? Do you just start drawing for do you have predetermined ideas about where their going to go? You have such an imaginative batch of sketches. One thing I'd crit is your faces, sometimes they seem sort of hit and miss. You'll really nail some and then others are more so so. It seems to depend on the medium your using sometimes I think. I see you've been doing some facial studies and I think you've got the right idea. Keep those up as well as the great anatomy studies. You're moving along really nicely! Keep it up!

thanks guys for the comments.

Zebz - Hard to say, usually I have some general idea [alot of times sparking off of something I've rencently seen]. Then some messy small sketches and if my brain and hand warms up well from that, something decent sometimes comes out. half the time things die at that stage because I can't get what I have in my head on to the paper.

For 90% of everything I draw out of my head, I can probably trace its origin to something I saw earlier, anywhere between an hour to a year, maybe even more.

The bubble dome mecha suit for example spun off while I was reading Shirow's Orion. The samurai guy spun off of the arm on the previous page which spun off of a character in Orion also.

The four legged mecha is off shoot of the big weapon platform in Appleseed.

I believe whole heartedly about the saying that having a strong technical base will free up the mind to be more imaginative. or in less kind words of Delacroix: "If you are not skillful enough to sketch a man jumping out of a window in the time it takes him to fall from the fourth story to the ground, you will never be able to produce great works."

And those times when I feel most unimaginative is probably the best time to do studies.

I should be drawing more though. Had a two week break from school and blew away most of it playing Dawn of War. Going to update this thread more frequently this quarter... maybe that will force me to do more.

anyway I've talked enough for the week...

couple things I was working on yesterday and night. couple Designs for school animation and comic book club.

doin an independent study in illustration this quarter, have to do 2 paintings over the next 10 weeks. here're couple sketches for paintings, working more on sketches for the next week or so and color comps.

The one on the right is "Apotheosis", was playing around with a sketch of it in the last update. FLeshing out hte idea some more in this sketch.

Nice stuff as always. My 2 cents on the painting sketches: Go with the first one. There's a lot more movement in there even if it is more of typical battle scene. It just looks fluid. The other one is a cool concept but I think the angle maybe could be more dramatic or something. It just seems more dull since the image is centered, the angle is head on, etc. Definately mess with it more though. I like the idea of the "holy" robot or what have you. Very cool stuff. Keep it going man!

Cool idea on the Apotheosis one but I agree, still not quite what you may be looking for in a finished painting. Perhaps you could set the "camera" just above him and slightly in front of him. You'd need to use some perspective in there to get the angle just right and it would be cool if you could somehow give the clouds the effect that their breaking as he's pushing through. I really like this idea. I hope you continue to develop it. We should all do a round of Robot Rennaissance drawings. LoL You could get some really cool stuff from that idea. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

The wide angle shot one looks cool too. Keep it up!

I know what you mean about drawing in public. If I feel I'm having a good darwing day I don't mind but most of the time I don't want people lookin' at what I'm doing. LoL But keep it up, we'll get there in time.

Nice little update. I'm really excited to see some of those color comps as larger pieces, especially the robot one. You've gotta make that in a widescreen so I can use it as a wallpaper for my Powerbook! LoL I'm sure it's going to turn out awesome. You've inspired me to work on some bots of my own, unfortunately I have no skill when it comes to that sort of thing. Again, hopefully in time I'll be there with ya! Keep it comin' man!

BTW, you wanna OC sometime? Just thought it'd be cool to chill and sketch sometime. Hit me up on AIM, ZRSBNETZ, sometime.

not much to show for a week... :/

A little at the MET, only had a few hours there, spent about half of it sketching, the rest the time poking Velasquez and Sargent paintings with my nose. "Pan of Rohallion" in the american art wing of the MET; 20min
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/sketchbook141.jpg

Henry O. Tanner's sculpt of Charles Grafly; one of the Wyndham Sisters; and Charles H Niehaus' "Caestus"; maybe 15~20 min each

You can never go wrong with Sergent and Zorn study. The Madame X study is great! And the 5 mins ink life drawing of the girl with the hat has lots of energy, good posture, and good poportion, my favorite! NICE work buddy!
Keep it up!

So I'm shooting down this thread looking at all the progress, thinking "yeah... hell yeah.... double HELL YEAH!!" Nice stuff. Makes me start looking around for where I put that pencil: I think I left some white space in my sketchbook. Looking at this thread is going to make me work harder tomorrow. thanks for posting your sketches.

Hey what's up dude? Dunno why I've missed this book. Cool robot designs man, and you're really getting a nice line quality with the latest life drawings. They look great, keep going with the inks.

niiiiiice brush stuff man, shows that you really break the form down to their essentials. I would say to simplify the shadow masses more when you're working in a midtone... but this post is really strong! jawesome

darth - thanks man. Havin a hard time translating that from computer to canvas though. LOL, still got a few weeks to iron things out. Hope for the best.

xia; Groover; joe; and cody - Thanks for dropin by guys. I'm working pretty much all inks with life drawing all this quarter. going back to charcoal pencils and such next quarter. Hopefull I'll see some improvement.

auden - Glad to hear that.

sorry for the lack of updates. Haven't been getting around to scanning the sketchbook.

Here're a few OC sessions from the last week. Some okay, some not so okay. Getting better feel for tablet now. Got a bigger tablet on the way.

session with Zebzfree [left] and Lightkirtar [upper right]; I'm lower right, the vagina clown monster.
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/11222004.jpg

session with Luna and genysis; not sure which is which, they were both on the left. I'm lower right again. No so good for the time spent on it.
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/11242004.jpg

with Maxetormer [left]; my life drawing from memory [lower right]
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/11262004.jpg

with lightkirtar; this one was fun, we switched at about 2/3rds way through. He worked on the tree, I worked on his robot.

Way to go man, this last bach shows lots of experimentation and
boldness, I really like your use of varied tecniques, afer seen your
life work I think I am gonna do some stuff with inks.

I specially like the foreshoting on the
one on the top left of this page:
ld33 (http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/ld33.jpg)

keep it up and update more often.

P. S. OC-ing with ya was loads of fun ill like to do it
again another day :D keep it UP!

small dump. If you leave a comment, please point out one thing [at least] that I should work on, technique, subject matter, whatever...

Ok as far as critics goes, I thnik it would be a good idea, that you
maked more scketchs focusing on line economy, some times your
line becomes a bit too messy, and that affects the reading of
your render, make more face structure studeis too, line work -
3D wire studies are great to understand the planes of the face
ovind doing to much gray renderings and work on doing more
3D wire strucutre to increast you plane understanding.

sketchbook147 (http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/sketchbook147.jpg)

For example In this one, your shapes go a bit to flat and it appears
that you copied mainly the values, make a wire construccion, even
when you copy stuff form a magazine, or form another painter, treat
it like a life drawing, make construccion lines, and that way you will be
practicing to think on 3D.

hahahahah! oh man that last SP is wicked-funny Noah! Damn, I feel shitty because I diddn't sketch it up enough during the WS, especially in the lobby.

I got some nice shots of you too. We should trade, I forgot that you got a pic of me, molly and foster. That would be cool to have for the record, even tho I was prolly drunk when you took it.... anyways I'd still like to have a copy. I'll send you the angry pic of you I got - Eric has a great one of you at the party too.

Awesome hanging with you in the little time I had to do so. take care.

wow dude, that SP is awesome! one thing, your values are all too light. when you look at it, all the dark spots are (the seperation of the lip, the seperation of the nose, pupils, eyes) spotty. i'm not saying the whole picture has to be contrasty, but if all your shadows are that light, don't make those things so black....it looks funny. you've done a great job of leading my eye around the shapes though, they feel solid. was great seeing you in SF man! those hands are looking great! your photos were real nice too! you've got a nice eye for that camera stuff...

Fun doodles as always, Hito. What you lack in skillz you seem to make up for in creativity. :teeth: I think I've said that before to you but oh well. It's true. Lookin' forward to an OC with you soon. My session the other night with brkofdon and rodrigo was utter crap. I almost always need a topic because I never know what do when I get in there. And I can't draw so well with my tablet, just not confident enough. eh. You keep up the great work. I need to get an update on my SB this weekend as well. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for droppin man

pretty poor production for two weeks. :/ I'll work harder in this week.

SP, Charcoal. The white round dots is from droplets of fixative. I got a bottle of liquid fixative with a manual pump instead of the aerosol cans. Better deal but the downside is the spray isn't as fine.

Great work!

did you use any compressed charcoal on the sp or only vine, in the photo it sure of looks like just vine from the bluish black color. I'd suggest trying out compressed charcoal if you haven't already... to broaden you experience with materials... especially give Alphacolor brand "Char-Kole" I can give amazing velvety blacks for medium- to large size drawings, it might be a bit clumsy for small ones though

The philly museum's awesome!

Ps. do you know of any good gaming venues in the area? My boyfriend's trying to find some places for 40k and IK Warmachine. we're going to check out the abington hobby place... any other suggestions? ( besides franklin mills/ the atomic place on south street)

Xaya thanks man. I'll try to do more work that's of posting quality.

hillary - yeah the SP is just vine charcoal. They're pretty nice on the sketchbook paper. You can push it around and stuff and the paper will still come through almost 100% when you erase. I use General's compressed charcoal (4B) and charcoal pencils @ the weekly life drawing sessions. Also black conte; sepia chalk; and ink; or whatever I find left behind in the room by other people some times.

German/Belgium right pauldron piece from Philadelphia Museum of Art; circa 1450~1500. did it while waiting for the Dali show. about 2.5 hours; 7x10"; 0.5 mechanical HB.
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/page-01.jpg

Um... random drawing. 5 to 6 hours. Mouth area is not good. 0.5 mechanical HB
http://stu.aii.edu/~aa1810/nli/page-02.jpg

These are done for a mini-sketchbook porject. The book will cycle between 2 or 3 stops, until its filled.

this is the last update in this thread. I'll be getting new webhost soon and future updates will be in a new thread. Hopefully I'll do something decent between now and then.
