So, I'm aspiring to become a concept artist, long story short I have about 18 months before starting college and am building a new portfolio as such. But I have heard concept artists are more of a temporary job, and not commonly entry level.

Would working in another level of production for either gaming or movies give me a better chance to work as a concept artist for that same company when the opportunity arrises? Which jobs would fall along those lines to get me into it? What are some jobs some of you guys do after the need for concepts is over? Are there companies that require concept artists at all times? Are there multiple concept artists working on different subject matter such as characters and creatures vs. machines vs. landscape?

Honestly I'm pretty open, I'm just exploring options at this point. I'm redeveloping and improving skills to be accepted to the college of my choice, but I need to declare a major before I even apply and want to have an idea of what options there are. I'm sorry for asking such open ended questions, but any help is appreciated.
