Well I learned one thing from todays topic: Water colours ontop of oils are so much fun. :)

andres_pad - I see your improving. He's a nice colour alright. Try varying your lines a little.

Andre, I really like it. I have kids and I could really see this as a childrens book illustration.

Everybody great job! I am so inspired by everybody here. I know we aren't supposed to say we suck but well, Hoover IS my middle name... lol

....mmmmmmmmm, dragons......
</HOMER>

I'll be posting a little later today.

andres_pad: Very good work. I agree with Gumdrop, you are improving and it's nice to see you trying some color there as well.

Gumdrop: Nice feel to the pic. I love the prickly texture that I'm sure is a byproduct of the mixed media. Love the flame in his hand as well. Great colors.

JSlayer: Good sketch. I would try bringing him out a little bit. Do you have a kneaded eraser? If not, pick one up and experiment with strategic erasings to help bring out highligts. Your background can be darkened, even with the torch, to help create stronger distinction between the character and the background.

village idiot: Great picture. Good colors and mood. I just kinda wish you'd finish it :D Now that would be something to see!

Traci: Welcome to our humble forum (saw your posts a couple of days ago). We look forward to seeing your work, regardless of the amount of training. In my experience, training doesn't count for half of what passion does!

Cheers,
~Oreg.

Just a quick one today, Oriental stile king dragon….

http://www.digitalmack.com/Pages/TempPostings/drgano1.jpg

Helzer – I like the use of the brush marks to describe the space. I would like to have seen a little more description of the volume of the body, maybe a high light or two/

Village – nice use of the red bounce light, it real brings the figure out.

GumDrop – the dragon has a nice “hairy” feel to it. when you said “water colors on top of oils” do you mean in 3d mediums or on the computer?

Cant wait to see everyone else’s posts

~Cheers

Antilight77--Nice! Drawn very well, and I love the colors. You get a cookie.

Village Idiot--Beautiful. Love the red reflected light. Cookie for you.

Gumdrop--That is wild looking. Oil and watercolor, huh? Almost looks like fabric. Really tapestry-y. Cookie.

Helzer--Cookie. Great textures as usual.

JSlayer--Awww, he's happy (eats peasant). Cute. Cookie for you, too.

Andres_Pad--Very expressive! I like the cross-hatching on his scales. Definitely a cookie for you.

I'm going to try to post later. So far it's looking good today! God, I need a cookie right now.:D

Lets see if I can manage to actually post something every day. or if it will take a couple more months until I post again.

Anyway, the idea behind this one is that dragons aren't the safest to have around, and I assume cold will render them rather harmless. This is supposed to be the keeper...
*note to self: learn to draw dragons until next time*

Thanks for the comments and crits everyone.

There is some real stunning work today.

MIKECORRIERO - spectactular work!

dingoegret - Love the design of the dragon...very dignified. Your linework is loose and full of volume. Cool

buzzz3d - I don't see anything wrong with the colors. Stunning work, love the transparency in the wing.

OLSEN - Great work, really like the design of the dragon's face.

village idiot - Awesome, sort of has this Prince of Denmark quality to it.

Gumdrop - Sinister. Cool work and really nice textures.

Man... everyone seems to be on fire today (pun intended)! thanks for all your comments.

JSlayer - He has a nice character about him. The angle of his horn is a little too extreme IMHO. I think a more rounded one would work better.

webgirly2k - I was in the same boat about a year ago - hadn't picked up a pencil since I was a kid and have had no training, but this place sure does inspire. Hope to see you become a regular.

village idiot - really nice look to it. His throne is very cool.

Helzer - Lovin that so much. The sky is wonderful... as is everything else.

Antilight77 - Very nicely done. the background and colours suit the subject. Oh... and the WC's were just another layer in painter to add texture and depth.

teyekanik - Wow... big brute. The sketchy lines look great.

dischord - Very original and a great style. Hope to see more.

Mr Man - Haha... cute!

OLSEN - Damn what a cool head. Love the wngs and colours too.

buzzz3d - Grrr... I'm getting the red X even after refresh. others seem to love it so I wanna see too! :(

eygji - Yay... atlast we get to see a hoard. Nice setting and composition.

dingoegret - Wish you'd finish him off. I like what I see so far.

Stinogatron - really cool style. Sort of like crunched fragments of paper.

xbiten - The anatomy is a little off but I like the colour and the armour spike.

MIKECORRIERO - I thaught you'd warm to this topic. Amazing piece... one of the best I've seen from you. Love the details... particularly the dragons head. You really handle those pastal colours too damn well!

This started out as what seemed to be a good idea. Now, I may be banned from the forums for life!

It is supposed to be Donald Trump. Who better to be the king of the dragons! I sketched it by hand on paper and colored the scan in Painter 8.

I would have liked to give it a decent effort but my 1 year old has stomach flu and was puking on me, and my puppy has distemper and was seizuring on me all day. Fun-day, and did I mention I can't draw dragons, hell, I can't draw Donald Trump! *sigh*

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the comments. It means a lot. I've been pounding away on the sketching in a serious way recently. Sort of got pissed at the plataue I hit there for a while.

Sometimes, getting mad is a good thing :D

Yeah, the dragon got lost on this one. I'm going to post another a little later that's a bit more "dragon intensive". I want to give my hand a rest for a little bit tho.

btw - your dragon rocks. Great colors and overall feeling to picture. Reminds me of the movie Dragonslayer in a way. Glad you posted today.

Hehe. Clever work around JABAJAWOOLU. I give you props for creativity.
Little crit: We don't actually know how large the dragon is unless we have some kind of point of referance in the picture. By this I mean, the dragon could be an inch tall and still have a close up of his nostril drawn. Just mentioning that because I did dig your idea.

I've been seriously slacking off on the DSG lately. And not just the DSG, all art in general. But I'm getting the motivation again.

This one took far too long, and I quit before it was entirely done. I was planning to add a bunch of vegetation growing off of the dragon, but I spent too long redoing the eye over and over until it looked half decent and I never got around to it. But I'm still happy with the result.

I'm a big dragon fan. I think it goes back to watching/reading the Hobbit way, way back in the day. And, to compound matters, I have a six year old that is just possibly more fanatical about dragons than I am, so Dad here had better be able to pull off a convincing dragon every now and then :D
