Concept: temporal striders
the temporal strider evolved into being in the last era of planet earth, amidst nearly unlivable conditions for all life. strangely they will also be the luckiest, because they evolved the ability to phase through time. thus continuing their survival in the more habitable past.

Although beautiful in color, these creatures from the netherworld feed on the life force of planets. The globes on their head resound in musical tones when they start the absorption process, fooling the unsuspecting natives of the planet with their seemingly harmless appearance.

Concept: "Muchos Colorees de la Luz"
This creature has been seen once by a farmer in Mexico. The farmer neared a waterlogged mine shaft while tending to his crops, and saw a flicker of purple light come from the gaping hole.
There, he saw the most alien, but beautiful animal he had ever witnessed. Light from the sun outside of the cave bounced off of it's teal skin, gleaming in a rainbow. It's needle-like feet barely touched the surface of the water. It emanated a purple light from the tips of it's feet and back of it's eyeless head. The minute he touched the mine's entrance, the purple fire engulfed it's body and it disappeared. He told the press about it, calling it the "Muchos colores de la luz", or the "Many colors of light".
No bigger than a human toddler, "Luz"'s species is a frail, defenseless species not of Earth. As a matter of fact, a species from nowhere. Or maybe everywhere.
They are born knowing what to do when danger approaches, then abandoned.
These creatures feed off of energy, which they usually do by absorbing sunlight through it's skin. The energy is converted to their own.
When faced in serious danger, or their environment does not meet it's requirements, it teleports. Nobody knows where, but where they do teleport they can access any place in the universe. In the "nowhere zone", they thrive; It's where they breed. Once business is finished, they go off in to the universe again.
Where they go, nobody knows.

Concept: Denkoura
Legend has it that the lightning from the skies came from creatures known as Denkouras. Denkouras are bug-like creatures made of panel like scales coiled around lightning. Though Denkouras don't have eyes they fare well in knowing their surroundings; lightning finds its way out through holes located throughout its body, Denkouras are able to analyze air currents by the movements of the lightning bolts. The lightning from these species is said to have enough energy to power cities for centuries, however this myth has yet to be proven because no one has captured a Denkoura in order to harness the energy. Many have came close however state that the Denkouras appear to seperate into bits of dust releasing the lightning stored up and disappearing in the skies.

Concept: The Eye-less Dragonfly Phaser
This inter-dimensional creature uses its nostrils to navigate, sometimes out of pure starvation it wonders into phases into our dimension hunting unlucky wondering flies, The Eye-less Dragonfly Phaser travels at a extremely high speed, its phasing abilities can be directly related to the vibrations caused to its abdomen, thought it seems that it is traveling through a black hole its actually the reverse of that, it literally tears its was through space and time thus phase walking. :yayca:

Concept: [*COLOR=White] Dimensional Scavenger [/COLOR]
[/B]Though quick and agile, this creature is more of a scavenger in its own dimension. Its main food source are small particles, though with it's tiny claws it has the ability to hunt its prey during times of need. The orb on its head houses the sensory organs necessary for functioning in its dimension, allowing it to perceive its surroundings. Its thin clear skin, which houses the blue strands of tissue allowing it to move, is protected by its thick iridescent shell. Though hard and light, its is mildly flexible, important for allowing its to fragile muscle tissue to move and pull its skin. Though rarely leaving its own dimension, it has the ability to create and puncture glass like windows into our reality. Scientists have been trying to learn more about this creature, but have had a hard time finding something delicious enough to lure it out of its own bountiful dimension.

Concept: "Petruchnkyea's Horse"
The first sighting of the horse species was by Col. Petruchnkyea in the year MXIIA, visiting the forests surrounding Lake Durkgy. He called it a ghost horse and a god's charioteer. The horse at times, could look like a regular horse with hooves, or serpentine, or even fish-like with fins. Since then, the Horse's existence has been elevated to a divine and spiritual level, becoming legend and folklore to the outside world, and becoming more fictional then fact.
Centuries later, scientists researching the biome of Lake Durkgy, discovered a natural occurring phenomenon where in certain areas of the surrounding forests, water molecules would instantly form, suspend in air, and form a thick fog that is different then the mist in other areas of the forest. Once the fog was thick enough, the scientists saw galloping horses form from the fog in the area.
Two captured specimens were brought back a few years later in the newly designed 'bubble' cages (which were used to maintain plants) by imitating the area's ecological and chemical composition within the cages to keep the horses in their physical and intangible states.
Named after the first discoverer of the horse, Col. Petruchnkyea, Petruchkyea's Horses have become the hot topic for the invention of teleportation. The Horses' ability to break body chemical components into basic molecules, and further into particles to travel, is being used to advance new particle-based transportation machines.

Concept: Gallaeus Transflectus / Shifting Hypra
This species of Hypra is usually found in the desert, when it is found at all. The phase takes place in just about a second and a half, and the effect that is seen as the "space fold" quickly disappears. No one knows exactly where the creature shifts to (or from), but scientists have been tracking their movements and studying their behaviors in order to get a better understanding of their abilities.

Concept: Sholiptus Phase Jumper
With a shimmer and a sudden shockwave, a Sholiptus comes into this reality disturbing a pair of mating Red Krewts. Its iridescent oily skin glimmers in the afternoon sun in stark contrast with its exposed bonelike "face". While little is known about this creature with the ability to walk between worlds, it is believed that its lack of eyes have been replaced by a much stronger sense of being and time displacement that surpass the light sensitive organs we as humans rely on so much to make our way through the world. The Sholitpus is not a dangerous creature despite its fearsome appearance, its body shape and super sensitive mouth parts are what allow this strange beast to travel between the realities unharmed.

Dimension Jumper is a small mysterious creature. He usually feeds by sucking up different kinds of juice, from various plants, and fruits. Many people saw him jumping from one food source to another, but no one was ever able to catch him. That's because of hes uncanny ability to make open up something similar to the portal above hes body, and by jumping into it disappear from our dimension. No one know, where Dimension Jumper is getting after each jump or whats the secret of hes special diet that makes him so much fuel for all hes daily jumps.

Concept: Harlequin Sucker
Harlequin suckers are small wingless insects. Their only purpose appears to be to drive people mad. Harlequin suckers have the ability to phase walk, which in this case means such a quick travel that it could almost be considered teleporting. They feed on mammal blood and use it to fuel their phase walking. This type of action is extremely energy consuming and takes heavy tolls. As such, the creature can't phase walk long distances without running out of fuel. Practically this means that once a harlequin sucker finds a suitable prey, it will live on it for a long, long time. The insect phase walks out of harms way every time the host attempts to get rid of it only to soon feed on a different part of the host. This creates a cycle which ends once the host gets numb to the continuous stings and lets the harlequin sucker eventually die of old age.

Also known as “Ghost Eater” the “Wisp Eater” sustains itself as the name suggests by consuming the spirit energy of Will-o the Wisps. Existing out of phase with our reality the Wisp Eater is visible but not tangible just as wisps are.
Most of the time the Wisp Eater will act much like solitary jellyfish; floating around old battlefield and graveyards the souls of the dead (wisps) are attracted to its iridescent blue tentacles. The orbs on its carapace which are often mistaken for eyes are in fact the beats stomachs where the patchily digested wisps can be seen realsing their energys.
This engery byproduct is also very useful for leaner times. If their have been to wars or plagues to speek of many Wisp Eaters will begin to starv. At this point the Wisp Eater takes a more active role in hunting. Now the use of the two humanoid limbs extending from its body becomes apparent. Despite being incorporeal the Wisp eater can render these limbs as solid object for short periods of time. The energy released by the digesting Wisps allows the Wisp Eater to generate an illusion of diseased loved one.
Many a fool has been tricked into a snowstorm or off a cliff by the hands of these meschvious beasts. Why wait for you to do when they can make you kill yourself.
-------
I fully expected to be disqolified from the compatition as I recognise the the Wisp Eater is not in fact Iradesent. First ever CA.org forum posts so not bad for one days work. Advice is much apreaciated.

Wish I'd had a bit more time to add a background and seriously work on the phasing, but I ended up having a lot to do the past two nights and couldn't do as much as I wanted :\
Anyway here's my phasewalker. It uses sonar from the silver dome on its head to interpret its surroundings and can blink short distances to get around quickly.

Please ignore my previous statement about the delay. It was a dirty dirty lie and I'm setting the poll up now.
Really strong showing this week. I really liked (lark, David79, scorge, heimdayel and xinranliu's work this week. I would have given it to heimdayel because the design was very original and the rendering is really solid, but I think that the iridescence of the creature was a little overlooked (I will elaborate in crits, tomorrow). I voted for (lark, really eerie, original design and a stellar rendering of iridescence.

Both of you followed the requirements, but your pieces gave very difficult reads, whether it was because it was muddy or because it looked incomplete in areas.

lawl this is retarded..whatever browser I use I can't see my mod-approved posts in finals thread - looks like I'll have to ask peeps in the wip thread if they can see it :S
okay, now on to the serious point: really tough to choose one seeing as there were a lot of good choices... really close call bewteen (lark, scorge and david
went with david's in the end - beautiful painting, liked the idea of the creature turning to a semi-solid smoke bouncing on rocky cliffs when ethereal.
some other comments
(lark - love it! very intriguing phasing effect, with image strips of the creaturre floating above it
scorge - wow, just wow. beautiful desing and work on the iridescence.
coldregree - intresting use of lightning in your bug, the moving parts look cool too
fuhnerator - shattering reality to get a steak! this phasing effect really makes it stand out from the more classic effects most of us used; nice mix of translucent and iridescent body parts
v-lkry - beautiful colours there for the dragonhorse; it blends in well with the foggy environment
artipahts - interesting design to your quadruped, the headcrest is particularly eye-catching.So is that portal too, with its watery distortion effect (but as someone mentionned in the wips - rob I think?? - would've been more awesome if some hints of another land/plane was shown instead of plain orange)
arbin - lol, what an annoying pest..mosquitoes were bad enough, but with teleportation they'll surely drive you mad

So, I guess it was a failure on my part. The idea was that on the left side is a mountain scene in daylight, on the right is a beach scene in evening. The creature is phasing from one distinct area to another. That's why there's all that smoke etc. around the creature. I should have made that more clear I suppose. Oh well.

Great round guys, ran out of time and was unable to finish, again! Had a hard time voting, it was between scorge and david79
in the end I went with scorge, I really liked the colours and the bony jaws, in my opinion it is one of your best pieces I've seen you do, well done.
david79: really neat creature, I liked the way you showed it in action chasing its prey, all the texture work is brilliantly done and a very nice composition as well, and the design of the creature is very interesting, there are mammalian, reptilian and insectoid characteristics on your creature and they all go well together to show its overall design, you only just missed my vote Well done mate.
xinranliu: Another strong piece, with some exceptional rendering, the colours look awesome, only complaint I have is the background and phasing effects look like they still need some work.
artiphats: I really like this design, I like the way you incorporated the phasing effects, while still giving us a good idea of the creature's anatomy.
(lark: Really neat dude, I like the style you put into your creatures, it's very distinctive, but they all still stand apart as unique creatures, I do feel you should've pushed the iridescence a bit more, though
I'll get to the rest some other time

Awesome round!
Scourge! David79! Amazing paintings. I nearly voted for Xinranliu as well, but Arbin took the cake for me. They were all AMAZING paintings, but design-wise didn't catch my attention.
I love the way the Harlequin Sucker's phasing was portrayed as well as the description. What a horrifying creature! This is what COW is all about to me. Clearly the victor!

Sorry if these feel formulaic, but I've been really busy with work, so this format is just easier for me.
(lark - Strength: Good rendering, well rendered iridescence, original design
Weakness: The effects get a bit overblown in areas, I’ve seen you use that particular ground for a lot of creatures, but you paint well enough to paint back into it to make it look less like a texture.
As Pertains to the Brief: Fits the brief perfectly.
Maeganite - Strength: Vivid palette, good mood
Weakness: Colours are not blended at all giving a very rough, choppy look to everything, lack of atmospheric perspective flattens piece, better sense of light is needed to give more volume to forms.
As Pertains to the Brief: The iridescence wasn’t quite captured and I wish we weren’t as hit over the head with the portal to another world, but it otherwise fits.
Dragonfrog - Strength: palette, clarity, diffused light, large improvement in rendering style over previous pieces.
Weakness: Image is still very flat, background has no depth, creature needs design to be pushed further, secondary lighting not accounted for at all which makes the pink lose its luminocity.
As Pertains to the Brief: The first two you have down, but I wish the phasewalking element was a little bit more illustrated.
ColdDegree - Strength: dynamism, mood.
Weakness: Creature rendered very roughly, giving a difficult read, eviro and creature rendered in different styles, lighting on creature arbitrary, composition impbalanced towards the center (canvas should be smaller, moon shouldn’t be directly behind creature).
As Pertains to the Brief: Seems to fit the brief fine.
AdrianNagorski - Strength: Sense of movement.
Weakness: Difficult read, uninteresting design, overuse of smudge tool, extra frame doesn’t help support image.
As Pertains to the Brief: Iridescence is hard to discern due to muddiness.
fuhrenator - Strength: Weakness: As Pertains to the Brief:
- Strength: Original design. I like the glass-like shatter used for dimensional rifts.
Weakness: Some forms feel flat, creature feels inorganic, no strong source of light or luminosity.
As Pertains to the Brief: Seems like it has eyes, but it could be interpreted as another sensory organ, I let it slide, but it should be more clear.
v-lkry - Strength: Mood and mysticism, colour palette.
Weakness: Design is hard to read, image busy and obscuring mist just makes it seem busier, lack of contrast reduces image depth further.
As Pertains to the Brief: Fits well enough, iridescence could be pushed further. That small bit on the head could look like an eye to some.
artiphats - Strength: Nice dynamism, interesting take on lupine design.
Weakness: Needs better attention to animal anatomy, needs stronger sense of light and shadow.
As Pertains to the Brief: Fits very well.
xinranliu - Strength: Rendering, movement, composition and design.
Weakness: Colours get overblown to the point where they become white, flattening the image. Brushe strokes in the background become busy when phasing effects and the brown strokes come together.
As Pertains to the Brief: Very nicely done.
scorge - Strength: High quality rendering, excellent sense of mood to the creature. Love the little extra creatures, which build the world nicely.
Weakness: Patterns on the creature begin to feel arbitrary which looks eclectic when paired with the vibrant palette and the skull-like mouth. The rendering on the phased out area could be tightened up a bit.
As Pertains to the Brief: Fits it perfectly.
tsabu - Strength: Unique, surreal design.
Weakness: Poor sense of light and shadow, issues with readability.
As Pertains to the Brief: Iridescence could be clearer. Phasing elements of the creature look unfinished.
David79 - Strength: Nice rendering, dynamic illustration, phasing effects are really cool.
Weakness: Boring design, I’ve seen creatures like this a dozen times before.
As Pertains to the Brief: Fits the brief very well.
Sealegs - Strength: Very original design, fairly nice rendering.
Weakness: Does not feel as large as it’s been scaled, more attention could have been paid to rendering on the limbs, perspective on back feels off
As Pertains to the Brief: Feels more bioluminescent than iridescent. Phasing effects could have been pushed a little further.
Heimdayal - Strength: Very nice rendering, particularly on the phase effects, with an original design.
Weakness: Poor image composition, the creature is in the center, and elements extend left and right, but nothing leads you on any diagonals or verticals, making the image boring for the eye to read.
As Pertains to the Brief: The gloss on the creature gives me less the impression that the creature is iridescent, but more that it has the palette of a creature that would be iridescent, without all the trouble of actually rendering it out. Iridescence diffuses light into various hues rather than reflecting white light as a gloss. Other than that it fits well.
Arbinn - Strength: Very interesting take on insect design. Really cool phasing effects.
Weakness: Rendering feels flatter than I’m used to from you.
As Pertains to the Brief: Works very well, but the split in the head could be interpreted as eyes if you aren’t careful.
TheAlmightyPillock - Strength: Unique design.
Weakness: Poor rendering quality, no sense of light, overuse of textures for background and creature.
As Pertains to the Brief: I don’t see it phasewalking, or as being iridescent and it even seems to have eyes.
jrbarker - Strength: Decent rendering, nice palette, good sense of luminocity of surface.
Weakness: Design should be pushed further, the body is rather bare and uninteresting.
As Pertains to the Brief: The phasing could have been a little bit clearer, but it wasn’t a huge problem for me.
ZenithDeLunaris - Strength: Sense of perspective on the creature, good effort creating space.
Weakness: Your rendering needs to improve quite a bit, do studies from life, especially of existing animals. Never use black as a flat bakground. Dial up brush size.
As Pertains to the Brief: I see elements 1 and 3, but 2 is not effectively portrayed.
J-Sun - Strength: Original design, decent rendering.
Weakness: Musculature could be further developed, some areas feel rushed, light source could be further established.
As Pertains to the Brief: Works quite well.

now the rest of you....
maeganite: they look a bit like metroids, anything else I'd have to say was already stated by Si Swe, lack of atmospheric depth, and muddy rendering
dragonfrog: I can see the eyeless part of the brief but the iridescence is very minimal andthere's almost no evidence of phase shifting. You should work on building those contrsts as well, becasue the creature's body doesn't stand out from the background all that well. It's neat to see it internal organs through a trnasluscent skin, perhaps if you incorporated that into your design a little more that would make it look more interesting
ColdDegree: Looks pretty neat, all the lightning like effects all over the creature doesn't really do it good, it brightens up the entire creature plus it makes it look a bit too busy. Although it looks like a mystical creature I don't see much phase sifting going on.
AdrianNagorski: It is still quite difficult whats going on. Your creature still looks very flat and with no values given it form it's actually pretty hard to read as an actual creature. Try to bring out the shadows and highlights to indicate its form and anatmoy better. The iridescence (as Si Swe stated) is hard to make out because of the choppiness.
fuhrenator: Pretty neat way for it to phase shift, shatteroing through reality and whatnot. Quite a humerous take adding a t-bone on a fish hook to attract it, but it does seem a little uneccessary as well as a bit of a distraction from your creature. I feel this needs some stonger highlights to give it more form and to separate it from the background.
v-lkry: Very cool mystical looking creature, reminds me of the Hippocampus in a way. This could've used soem more warmth on the creature, becasue almost the entire image is set with a cool blue hue, adding more of that pink all arounf the fron the othe creature would really help it to stand out from the background.
tsabu: as I've stated before to some of the other entries, push those values, if you were to change this to grey scale you'd find that the tone of your creature is almost the same as the background it's on. Some parts also look a little unfinished, it seems like there is some kind of clear fiery bits on the left of the creature but it's hard to make out. The portal design is really cool though.
Sealegs: I don;t see any sort of phase shifting illustrated and the iridescence can be brought out a tad more. It's a pretty interesting design, though, perhaps if you varied the positions of its tentacles a bit more to give the piece some more movement.
Arbinn: Very cool phase shifting going on, and a very annoying looking critter, as if mosquitoes weren't bad enough. It's a very unique design as well some nice anatmoy shown. The iridescence looks to me more like basic discolourations on the exoskeleton more than the phenomenon itself.
TheAlmightyPillock: At first glance it looks like your creature has eyes, and there is no evidence of iridecence at all. And the phaseshifting is way too minimal. Once again values need to be pushed a bit further to help define the creature's form, because a lot of your creature looks too be made out of paper.
jrbarker: Your rendering is getting better as you go. it's a lot smoother and more refined, it's good to see that your participation is gradually improving your skills as an artist. The design is a little dull, looks like a few other entries. The iridescence seems at first a bit minimal but when you look at birds feather iridecence isn't always a rainbow of colours. A bit more attention towards the phase shifting ould've also improved the concept.
ZenithDeLunaris: Fiirst I'd like to point out that it is best to avoid such a pitch black backgrounf to put your creature on, it lighten your darker values which flattens your image slightly. The Phase shifting looks very lazily drawn in and could used a lot more work. The large domeon it's head is almost recognizable as an eye, much like the large eyes of insects, but it's passable, the Iridescense (I'm really getting tired of typing out that word...)seems more like a purple underlighting on the creature than a shine.
J-sun: Very interesting design, almost looks liek it has eyes, but they could pass for ears or some other protrusion, the iridescence look more likes some blotchiness of colouron its skin.
phew that's it hope I didn't miss anybody...
oh, Heimdayel: first off I don't see your entry in the final thread either, but if others can see it then that's good enough I guess. A very interesting concept though, the phaseshifting is pretty well executed, but the iridescence is a bit minimal, and it almost looks like it has an eye. Good work overall.

(lark - Beautiful work (lark. very polished and complete, the iridescence you achieved is especially nice!
maeganite - Excellent design! I really like your style/strong colors. The overall composition is very engaging and really nicely done.
Dragonfrog - great concept! The iridescence of the smooth body is and instant read - very well done.
ColdDegree - great design on your Denkoura. I'm a bit distracted by all of the lightning/electricity and would like to see more of the creature - which I can see you developed very well - but sort of occluded with the effects. maybe just the addition of another creature that is less electrified would do the trick without altering what you have.
AdrianNagorski - cool concept! I'm not one to talk when it comes to posting a work that is teetering on the edge of being incomplete - that said - I can see that you started to get into some great details with the arms and wings - I'd like to see you oust this a further towards completion.
fuhrenator - very tight concept. I really like the segmented, insect-like design. I especially like the way you depicted the creature breaking through dimensions.
v-lkry - Awesome concept v-lkry! The iridescent and phasing effects are competing too much with/overpowering the creature. I like what I see regarding the creature but I want to see more of it.
artiphats - Very cool design. Like the "space fold" and the alien anatomy. The iridescence looks great!
xinranliu - Excellent piece. Love the colors and the painterly phasing effects.
scorge - Fantastic mastery of iridescence. Great concept & piece. Love the addition of the startled Red Krewts!
tsabu - I encourage you to keep working on this one and following through to a more completed piece
Looks like you have the groundwork for a very interesting and unique creature concept here!
David79 - Beautiful Piece! Excellent rendering and composition. Love the sense of movement and action of the scene!
Sealegs - Nice concept! Very nicely detailed. I like the way you illustrated the phasing - simple and effective - possibly the most convincing - as I'm really not sure what it would really be like to see a creature phasing into our reality! ;)
heimdayel - I cannot see your entry! :(
Arbinn - I really like the way you depicted this guy partially phased. I also like how you chose to do a creature that exist on a micro-scale and have the viewer zoomed in to a unique scale/perspective. Personally I find that sort of thing very challenging - nicely done!
jrbarker - Love the elegant creature design and the way you've depicted it phasing - sort of pushing through space. You definitely nailed the iridescence, although I'd perhaps want to see you push that a bit further. Awesome job!
Great work everyone! :yayca:

...though I would point out that you both thought it had eyes even though I said in my description that "though many people beleave that the orbs or the Wisp eaters carapace are eyes that they are in fact stomaces". Though I get what you mean about the over relience on textures I did the whole thing in a few hours and was trying to use an Imagine FX tutorial on traditonal painting aswell. I really need to work on my painting, its not my strongsuit and next time I need to give mylef more than one evening to do it all.
Thank you for taking the time to give advice despite my being disquolified.

Thank you for all the advice, guys! Like I said before, I love the critiquing and compliments as much as entering!
I'm glad to see I have improved, Si_Swe, and thank you for the wonderful advice. I will try my best matching requirements when entering next time, Rob, I had a hard time with the iridescence part of it. Thank you for the kind words, J-Sun, I'm glad you liked it!
Even though I always lose, it's still fun to see how you can make your art better so you don't lose :).

Really great work this round, I'm kind of shocked because I didn't see much or come up with anything myself earlier in the week. David and Scorge (esp) blew my mind with their critters.
Voted Xin because of the style/colors and type of creature though..

great crits from Si_swe and rob, thanks for the good pieces of advice guys!
lol when I saw other peeps' iridescence (looking your way (lark and scorge notably) I definitely thought I could've worked more on mine..and I totally suck at BGs :P, started recently to actually paint them, used to have only a textured blank colour field before, again another area for improvement
..I should come back to this painting and rework it someday :)
..and apparently only mods can see my final?? lol I should attach the pic to a post when the poll is opened - thanks to those who voted for me even though my pic phased out of the thread :P
