Anybody know any good oil painting books to get started? I've never done any oil painting before and wanted to get a good book on it before I bought materials/paints. Any help would be much appreciated.

hey groover,
I've been painting for a while, but I never had any formal training and always just kind of winged it on the right materials and techniques. A few months ago I decided to get something to help me out; it's a book called "The Complete Oil Painter," by Brian Gorst. It has all sorts of information on the right kind of mediums to use, types of brushes, palletes, color mixing, how to stretch a canvas, and also some good painting techniques and tips. I found this book to be really helpful, and I think you will too. (found it at Borders) Hope I could help!=)

Hey Groover, I didn't see this thread, I just started a thread on Art books and I think 2 of them would really help you a lot. "Hawthorne on Painting" and Dan McCaw's "Proven Strategies for Creating Great Art" put out by "International Artist" magazine which I think is a really good publication. There are photos on my thread.
Have you checked out the Life painting thread? Most of the people there paint oils and there are critiques all the time. Good Luck! :D - B

I would recommend Gregg Kreutz's (pronounced "Kroits") Problem Solving for Oil Painters (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823040976/002-2789722-0734455?v=glance) to anyone!

the best book about painting i ever read is richard schmid's "alla prima". you can order it via his website, www.richardschmid.com and it is shit fucking expensive but as far as i am concerned, even importing it to germany was worth every penny.

Schmid's Cool, I have his book " Richard Schmid Paints The Figure" probably even harder to find these days. I haven't ponied up for "Alla Prima" yet though. Here's a picture for those too lazy to click.

Anything by Schmid is a must-have for the serious painter, but I hesitate to recommedn them to beginners or those exploring painting, since all Schmids books are so advanced in terminology, concept and technique.
Nevertheless, Schmid could possibly pass on knowledge that would help a beginner start to see right, and avoid bad painting habits.

'breaking the rules of watercolor" and "painting people" both by burt silverman.
i believe you can get the used fairly cheap. or if you don't have the cash, go to the library!
