"Now that's a pig of a different color..." "...pigs of a feather flock together..." ...aah whatever. I'm up to late and still avoiding writing a paper I need to finish!

I couldn't think of anything more original than adding a few extra horns and a beard. Guess my heart wasn't in it today as I became jaded after abot 40min's and gave up. reference used.

Hey... Where's his nostrils?! Haha... I guess that's another "unique" feature. :o

Strangely, I was reading Pierre Boulle's original Planet of The Apes novel last night, and was inspired by this paragraph:

"If I noticed a camel with three humps or a wild boar with horns like a stag, they could in no way astonish me after what I had already seen on the planet Soror."

I told myself i'd draw the boar one day, and then gave no more thought to it. Then lo and behold, todays topic arrived! Spooky!

Anyway, here's my half an hours worth for today. A Boar with Stags horns... There's some great stuff appeared today, it looks like it will be a strong showing all round!

my reference was from the movie Babe. I started to draw a pig and suffered from shock and awe, so I put on babe, and while my kids watched (the movie) I sketched this.

I am trying to get used to color and painters brushes.

This sketch was about 20 min for the pencil, and about 30 min for the photoshop treatment.

I didn't warp the design much; next topic I'm going to push whatever design a lot further away from reality. I also should spent more time on the color; the values and lighting aren't quite right, but I've seen busy at work lately this is about all I can get in.

teyekanik-I love that. Very nice.

lpetty-Tight pencil sketch. Did you use any reference? Seems very accurate. Great job!

Morr-Love the design. Like to see more of that boar.

Nephilim-Good start! I'd almost like to see the creature that skull came from more than the headpiece, myself, but I'm anxious to see where you're taking the piece.

Gumdrop-great texture and color scheme.

Commander Obvious-I REALLY like this. The style is very reminiscent of something...I want to say Ralph Steadman, but that's not who I'm thinking of. Hmm. I'll get back to you. :)

Village Idiot-lovely as usual. Ever get tired of being good?:D

dARKCLOWN-I like the chunky linework. Very 'inky'.

webgirly2k-This is cool! Probably my favorite of the pieces you've posted.

xbiten-That's not lame, my friend. Seriously, every time you're hating your work, you're probably learning something. Besides, if you keep this up, and keep drawing every day, you're going to improve exponentially.

Suggestions: You might want to try layering in a little more color gradation outside of the orange range(maybe some blue reflected light?) Also, I notice none of the orange is bleeding into the white of the hooves and the teeth; incorporating a little of that local color into the other elements will help tie it together. Hope I didn't offend, and I hope this was mildly helpful.

Good work, everyone!

Ipetty, i'm very envious of your raw sketching skill.

An alien warthog on hmmm, some planet similiar to Dagobah i guess. highly prized for the jewels that make up their eyes, many foolhardy poachers die each year in attempts to catch the elusive beast.

Commander Obvious - I really like your strokes. Gives it a nice agressive look.

village idiot - Not your best but I love the face (particularly the eyes) and hair on the shoulders... it's the hammer that throws me. His right hand is gripping the haft in a way that makes it look like it's pointing slightly forwards, but the left hand and the hammer head say otherwise.

nephilim - Interesting start. The top of the skull and the eye sockets look good, but I can't really make out what's going on underneath.

dARCKLOWN - real nasty looking brute. The stubby back end is great. Did you mean to have his front knees bending the wrong way?

teyekanik - Love the solid mass of this. His eyes look great.

Morr - Some nice texture. the bristling hair give it alot of energy.

xbiten - he's well done, but could do with a little more variation in skin tone... like a more pinkish nose or something.

beeglebug - I don't think that sort of background suits the pic' but I like the way you have expressed his shadow.

webgirly2k - Must be something with eyes today as people are giving such evil looks to poor piggies. The white outline looks very effective when combined with the spikey smears. Interesting idea.

lpetty - Superb sketching style. really dig the fatty folds on that. Cool colours too.

goran - Nice sketchy look with the white added. Love the keys.

Helzer - Bling bling piggy! really looks like you went at that agressively with the brushes. great stuff.

DocBoom - Hey that's cheating! Hehe... nice idea combining DSG's. the cowhog looks great.

Dr. Stevew - Well if it started out as a hog you've certainly twisted it alright. Love to know what you drink in the morning! :D

eygji - It's a good pose and would certainly look great if you came back to it and added more. It need stronger colours and contrast to give it some weight.

Ideaspark - Man that's crazy! Your commentary helps alot here hehe. I like it.

Sunny - Nice sleek look to it. I like the addition of the flies.

el_kyrre - Another cool sketching style. The front legs look very impressive.

buzzz3d - great style and colours. Nice feel to it... very cold.

-W.- - Nice details. Kinda has a Lovecraftian feel about it.

fletchgirl - Super nice paterns. I love it.

jasond - The eyes have a nice cartoon look to them, but his nose looks like a car badge. :D

WoodenWorkhorse - Aww... the cutest one so far. Love the 'shrooms.

Damn you guys never cease to amaze me. Not a lick of time today, but I'll say that I always miss the really good topics. Damn!!

Commander Obvious - I like the textures.
village idiot - So it's not "exactly breaking the concept barrier", but it's still nice to look at.
teyekanik - When pigs fly... good work, I especially love the eyes.
Gumdrop - Colors and textures are top notch again. Yeah, if you wouldn't have caught the sans-nostrils, I would have.
lpetty - WOW! I love the sketch and the painting looks even better. Those little side nostrils are a really nice touch.
Helzer - So great... pimping ham!
DocBoom - Hahah. What a way to handle a 4 day absence.
Sunny - Cool. Looks like something Stephen King would have thought up. Brush strokes are nice too.
buzzz3d - Damn! Good colors and mood. Using the blowing snow really adds alot to the concept.
Antilight77 - Very nice design. The eyebrow expression is really cool. Is that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles new arch enemy.

gaah... been gone from the dsg for a while, and decided to start it up again (to get beefed up for the upcoming workshop)...

I guess I was dreaming about purchasing a motorcycle and was thinking about switching from the sportbikes I've ridden in previous years to a cruiser and for some reason this idea came to my head... hope it makes sense...?

about 1.5 hours of work went into this (not counting the 2 hours i spent trying to figure out how to color the background while preserving the foreground colors... aargh! not knowing Photoshop can be a pain!!)

I don't know why, but around 4:30pm today I thought about this Salvador Dali painting (http://www.euronet.nl/users/koolberg/dali.jpg) which made me feel like painting pigs with exceedingly long legs (and human breasts). I didn't have enough crack on hand to smoke to properly get in the mood :P  so here's what I came up with instead...

http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Russell_Collins/DailySketchBook/DSG426_UniquePigWarthog2.jpg

I've got another one from my sketchbook (actual pencils were harmed in the process of creating that image) that I'm thinking about coloring and adding to this ballooning thread but if I don't get it done in time, it is like a cross between Cerebrus and a pig. Three heads. All ugly. Made of bacon. Mmmmm bacon...

The creative juices are really flowing today, really good.

CsakiP: Very good dynamic action

lpetty: Cool sketches

Thrash: My favorite today. Very refreshing and beautiful brushstrokes and use of colour.

Dahsramu: Cool design.

Stinogatron: Maybe you can make a little more distinction between light and shadow. Now the shape of the head is a little hard to read at first. I have a Wacom A5 by the way.

Antilight77: Yeh! Bad ass Pig!

WoodenWorkhorse: Very cute. I like it.

fletchgirl: Cool concept, maybe if you add a few highlights/shadows that it would look even better.

el_kyrre: Cool pencils. Wish I could draw like that.

Sunny: I like his hairdo.

Ideaspark: Very original.

goran: I like the texture.

Gumdrop: Cool! How do you keep the outlines (like near the ears) so sharp? Mine always tend to get a little blurry.

teyekanik: Oh yeah! That's one bug I don't want to have crashing into my windscreen :)

dARCKLOWN: I like it. Maybe add a shadow to the floor.

village idiot: I like his face. Perspective on the hammer looks a bit weird and the overall picture could use a bit sharpening but that is just my taste.

Commander Obvious: I like the graphic style and the feathers.

Cheers,

Erik

Great turnout in the end. :chug:

Thrash - lovin' the shape of that inflatable. Nice texture.

buzzz3d - I usually have the background on a different layer to begin with until I get all the basics down and have finished trying out different colours. Then I neaten up the edges with an eraser before merging the 2 layers together.

Commander Obvious: very cool. Im really diggin the feathers going down the back, it really sells the drawing. There could probably be a little bit more distinction in the face area, but I think its pretty unique overall. Good body shape.

Village idiot: nice facial espression. I think you probably could have pushed the design a little bit more though.

Helzer: that would make an interesting illustration critiquing the objectification of women and the bling bling idealogy in hiphop/whatever.

el_kyrre: this doesn’t read so much like a pig. Its too elephanty. Also I think there are issues with the joints and body mass overall. I don’t think this creature would be able to stand. It looks like its in pain. Locomotion is also hard for me to visualize. But… its great u only spent 5 minutes on it! That’s how it should be! Cool

buzzz3d: great loose color rendering. Also, your creature has a nice bit of personality. It looks like hes been around a while, like the alpha male that’s been through some serious shit. Nice.

Antilight77: dime a dozen perhaps, but theres a market for that. And also, that doesn’t mean you cant inject a bit of personality into him, making him stand out. Also, if you know it’s a failure from the start, why spend the extra time coloring and what not? Sketch more and develop a solid concept. I think the eyes are too cartoony. get rid of the white and throw a shadow under the brow, itd be much more “bad attitude”.

Commander Obvious: I think this is very inique. Im familiar with the dali reference, but it didn’t click until you said it. There was something about the design that was reminiscent of something and its uber creepy. It works very well. Nice concept!

Engine Man: great rendering. Nice lighting, but your still keeping it a lil loose. This has a kind of Warhammer 40k look to it. Something about it.

Engine Man
May 5th, 2004, 08:05 PM
Thanks, CoolkatCasey. I didn't even see the Warhammer influence until now. Ha! Good eye. :) Gotta love those space marines.

There's a story to the looseness, and I'm going to bore you with it :D: I started off with a one minute sketch that I loved, but as I started working it strayed farther and farther from where I wanted it to be until I was completely frustrated and one-hour deep into a mash of colors and no definition. I had a small breakthrough and managed to undo a LOT of the damage in only 40 minutes, but I still wonder how far I could have been if I didn't screw it up for an hour.

Anyway, I think I like it enough to tighten it up in the future. It's far from finished.

Take care!
