Wow man really cool. I especialy like the detail in the stone and shrubery. What process did you take in creating both the stone texure and shrubery detail?

add some more darker shadows to the statue and make more diffrent tree's and birds. maby make a nest on the statue and put somegrowth on top of it.

make it look old

Shouldn't he be standing next to a river? ;)

Seriously though, I dig it. I like the birds for the sense of scale. The only thing that bugs me is that the stone seems a little washed out. But the lighting looks right, and it seems accurate as to what it might look in the noonday sun...so I dunno. Maybe it's just me.

maybe it is just me but i am bothered by one thing..
at first glance it looks like it should be a huge statue.. then you see the birds and they seem to be behind the statue, that makes it rather small. and if it is small then the blacks in the stone should all be bigger imo.. well taht is my opinion.. nice idea though. ;D
keep it up

agreeing to what was said before, just make it look more weathered like its been there since some lost civilisation, mosst and stuff like that i spose, and the birds do seem to throw off the perspective, as if u've taken a picture from really close to a small stautue. but apart from that im loving it, great comical value.

Montross: Thanks! The brush I used (pshop 7) started with "Spatter 14 pixels" and I used the following settings...

Brush Tip Shape
-Spacing 60%

Shape Dynamics
-Control=Pen Pressure
-Minimum Diameter 80%
-Angle Jitter 30%
-Roundness Jitter 25%
-Minimum Roundness 75%

Other Dynamics
-Opacity Jitter 0%
-Control=Pen Pressure

Noise "on"

Evil: Yeah, it needs more growth type shit on it. I intentionally left the shadows pale, though; trying to get that "atmospheric" look to give it some scale.

Fuckifino: There's a river down there...waaaay down there. The "washed out" look, as I mentioned, was my attempt to support the scale.

Vimmzy: Apparently there's conflicting interpretations with the birds. I should probably have them overlap the statue to avoid confusion.

FFS: Weathering, aging, and clearer visual clues about the scale of the statue. I'm glad you picked out the comedic value. It's a rip from the awe-inspiring LOTR Argonath statues.

Thanks again for the crits, guys. This is why I post here; I desperately need fresh sets of eyes to look through and show me what I missed or fell short on.

Two quick things I noticed critwise.

There's something with the colors and values on the statue that bother me (too monotoned?). Maybe it's the values or it's the lack of transparency in the shadows (sky color). Maybe you can find some sort of reference for this type of enviroment.
The shadow on the inside of the sleve might have another value and color than the one on say the leftmost side of the statue (cuz of the reflected light there).

The forest line is too toned onto the foot of the statue. It would've been nice with some identifyable treetops. I prefer painting trees rather than using special brushes. It's cumbersome though.

the idea is fonky fresh. i agree with the one about the color of the trees being too much on the statue, and the shaows should be darker.

awesome awesome idea, i love cows and lotr
but once you get a little more than halfway up it the statue starts to look little cartoony. maybe if towards the top of the statue you show the weathering around the edges of the stoes more like the statues in the movie, cause yeah sure stuff would grow around the bottom but the top is reall where it would show weather damage.
if you revise it please post it back up here, i love it

Whats up preacher. Good to see you on the board. How's life in LA? Hit me up with your contact info. I'll drop you a line.

I Like the peice. Great concept. My only crit is that maybe you could have put something more structured at the base for size reference, like ruins or something. Other than that I got nothin.
