It`s been 15 years since "Tomb Raider" has hit the stores and Lara became one of Forbes "fictional 15" characters and a pop culture icon. Now, it`s time for a reboot, and reinventing her in a whole new way -

nFBrgeSjj-0

Release date - fall 2012.

Thoughts, opinions, expectations...?

Saw some gameplay of this at E3, they're going for a whole new survival feel to it. I gotta say it looks promising. New story, character and style looks like it could be for the better. Gotta say I'm a little excited

Couldn't have expressed it better myself.
I remember a Game Informer article pointing out that the game will be significantly more gruesome than its predecessors.
I wonder what that could entail.

I've never been a big fan of Lara Croft style shooters, but this actually looks really amazing. I also read an interview about Lara's new character design which I really like. I don't know if it'll be avaible for any platform I have but if it does, I might give it a go.

That said, her VA really does like hamming it up!

Yeah, less moaning and grunting...

I think Lara looks way generic and like every other game character these days. Someone said Square Enix/Claire Redfield and I agree. The nice thing about Lara is she didn't actually look like other games characters, and actually felt like a woman rather than a girl... Her design and the game set the path others followed, now it feels like she's chasing after others' successes. And there's something almost drugged about the actors delivery as well, so slow and deliberate like an affected posh Brit accent. Tomb Raider was an adventure game not a survivalist load of tosh. But hey ho, everything has to be darker and grittier now, so no doubt it'll make loads of money and be 'awesome'.

Wow looks a lot better than I thought it might but being an old school tombraider I can't help being suspicious and a little nervous of the whole 'oh lets make it gritty and rework her character too' thing... hmm we'll see I guess - here's hoping they pull it off.

Fun little nerd fact: Lara Croft's 2 most well known assets (her gigantic knockers) were totally a mistake. One of the developers was messing around with the models and happened to select the polygons on her chest and a slip of the mouse caused him to enlarge the polygons to a cartoonish 150%. For pure giggles he showed everyone else at work the accident, and they all promptly insisted that it be permanent

ha ha, I call bullshit on that story. Having built many a pair of low-poly knockers in my time I can tell you it's not that straightforwards to change the scale. This isn't Weird Science you know!

Uncharted felt like spiritual successor to the Tomb Raider series. Every TR game on the PS2 stunk. I feel like Laura should get the recognition that Nate gets. Hopefully this will give Uncharted some competition. I hope it has lighter moments because right now it looks too dark for the what the original IP was. Almost like turning Duke Nukem into some tattered, old war hero who's looking for redemption.

Newman's right. I worked at Core Design on the early '00's and it's an urban myth about her knockers. Their sizing was quite deliberate!

This.

Didn't know who Claire Redfield was but after looking I agree the simalarity is almost uncanny. New Lara is really forgettable; I've watched this clip a few times but I still end up rewatching it because I can't remember her face.

Original Lara is memorable and fine the way she is - surely the only people who wanted her redesigned were feminists and people insecure about her epic aesthetics

Ok. might as well put my 2 cents into it.

Couple of years ago I wrote a paper on "Tomb Raider" and Lara after watching a documentary that was included with the "Anniversary" edition of the game. And one thing that stuck in my mind was a description of Lara as "Sargent major with balloons stuck up his shirt". I loled. But I also realized it was true. Also, a second phrase I recently heard was that she was "like teflon - nothing stuck to her". And that is true as well. Regardless if she is running around a tomb or fighting monsters, sharks, giant octopuses etc. - her makeup is always perfect. As is her hair. And cleveage. Like in that hair product commercial. :tihi:

This "new " Lara is more to my liking. I have to admit. Bash me all you want, but now, for the first time, she feels...real. She`s not like teflon. She gets cut and bruised. She gets scared. And she does what ever it takes to survive. Wouldn`t we do the same in a situation similar to that one?

Now, this "survival" story...well, I guess they had to start somewhere. Also, she looks more like a girl now b/c she IS a girl (21 if I`m not mistaken), and not a full-grown woman. It will be interesting to see if she will actually start to grow up during the game and turn more into Lara we knew till now - sturdy, cocky, handling situations like a boss. The voice, however, irks me to no end as well (first time I watched this trailer I was like, gosh, girl, speed it up a bit <.<), and if you watched the game play video you`ll notice there`s a lot of moaning and groaning (at moments sounding like you`re watching a porn, TBH), so I hope that will change as well. I`m sure we`ll all be wiser once it gets released.

And to conclude - new Lara FTW. Why? B/C if I want to look at a plastic, perfect, Stepford style women, all I have to do is turn on a TV (which, btw, I don`t have), or watch some porn. She used to be a caricature in my eyes. This feels quite refreshing (especially since I never played Resident evil and similar games. I know, I know, shame on me....).

A critic said "5 minutes of this trailer made me care more about Lara than 15 years of her existence". And I, for one, agree.

Thought I'd watch the gameplay video to see what you were talking about and shit thats some terrible voice acting. And why does she talk so much? I'm assuming she's on her own so why does she have to walk around saying "Gosh that was scary" and "Oh nooo"

Hahaha literally couldn't play that game if that decision is final
