Spartan Camp #187 - 50 gestures + Optional "Walk Cycle Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 26th of June.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Walk Cycle Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

A walk cycle! Perhaps more of an animators' challenge but still very suitable for this activity. Depict the walk cycle in any number of frames, as long as you get the general feel there. You may want to use reference here. You can use actual (animated) walk cycles but using actual footage (films, series, sports vids) as reference may be a better exercise. For the challenge itself, consider weight and movement. Also, since you are limited in the amount of frames/drawings you can do, put some thought in timing those moments!

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

My wrist hurts from this. I did these in one sitting. First set was 10 second gestures, second was 30 second, and third was 1 minute.

Veriace - Great going! Although I haven't had wrist related problems myself, I don't think it's uncommon. You should be careful though, you don't want to strain your drawing hand and end up with some injury. I am not an expert on this, but there are some threads covering similar problems scattered around this website. Are you drawing mostly 'from the wrist'? From what I know, a lot of movement should be coming from the shoulder and perhaps the elbow.
As far as the gestures go - you're doing nicely. You got guts for doing all these different animals, often foreshortened too. I'm not sure about using construction for 10sec poses, perhaps purely observational sketches are more suitable. Once I get back on my own PC I can share a link to illustrate what I mean, hehe.

Sealegs - Sealegs, these are crazy. I like how you've gotten a very healthy balance between construction and 'free' drawing. Balance in these poses is outstanding. Do you mind sharing the reference source (book name). Though I think I can spot a couple, it's not easy to figure out which ones are from imagination. Reference can be a really good influence, even if you don't use it directly. Inspirational!

I haven't found a good way to incorporate drawing from the shoulder while using a tablet yet. If I had a scanner I would do more pencil gestures ^^

veriace - Forgot its digital when I typed that. I sometimes strain my hand from all the pressure sensitivity pushing, but not from the actual drawing. I think it's worth looking into though, that hand is (in)valuable!

Went straight in without warmup or reference poses this time. Took a while to get a decent feel of it. No optional :(

Samming - Nice technique on those faces! Mouths are not as strong as the eyes and noses yet but certainly getting there. Good to see a walk cycle too! I especially like how it is not just the arms and legs moving, but the torso and head are also involved. Fun to see the 'movement' sketch underneath too.

New topic's up!
