Started with a few simple ideas, if its readable to the viewer that means I could expand it to completion.
No1 has a bit of perspective issue as well as no3, no2 you cant see it that much but I sort of wanted and overheadish view it works the way it is but the rock the man is laying on top of doesn't translate so well that one also came out in a weirdly traditional fantasy scenario kind of way,
gotta go to work so I'll leave this here next week I'll post more on one of these

@Flame_Unquenchable
I think you need more tone variation. Try dropping it into b/w and you'll see it (works for me anyway). My friend once told me that if you can make your lights and darks work then you can use almost any color and the painting will still visually work.
@Blankstate
Nice work. Can't wait to see what it will develop into. Air looks the most promising but I think you need to tweak composition a bit. Looks a bit static IMHO. Might be because of the mountain range or the background spire wanting to jump into the for ground. I like the ribbed platform in the back. Maybe move it to become a focal point?

@Blankstate: Very cool thumbs so far, I'm liking the ice and air thumbs a lot
@AdrianNaborski:Try not to draw too much at once initially, block in the composition and slowly add to it design elements, you'll find it quite overwhelming if you try to draw everything in the environment, start off by indicating large shapes, then making them smaller as you go
@ErikStorstein: Cool idea, just like in a movie or game
@Flame_Unquenchable: It's looking decent so far, try to avoid texturing so early as they may end up being painted over later on, also work on the composition of the piece because everything is almost the same tone. Basic idea is the further away from the viewer the more faded the objects become, think of it as a fog, the closer you are to something the more clear it appears, the same idea works for any atmosphere, it's just that foggy regions are very murky and block more light then a clear atmoshpere
@Nhil: It's still a bit rough but it's looking neat so far
@Sergon: Looks cool, I don't have too many suggestions, maybe try to make the silhouette of the floating dragon egg skull thing stand out a bit more against the background
Chose Air, something different than what I've done before. Haven't done a lot of Environments.
Basic idea here is each floating island is a nest...pretty straight forward, each occupied nest is guarding by a pair of dragons, one protects the eggs, while another circles the island fending off any intruders.
this is just a quick blocking in of the composition, this will be made transparent then painted over top with colour later, and I'll add a few dragons here and there to show a little life in the environment...will need to do some sketching to get a good design of the islands and add a few elements to really make them stand out, don't really want them to show as just silhouettes.

@Ros1
I like the space going on here. The stone almost looks like spider's web. Don't seem to be a natural formation. Maybe it was disgorged by the dragon sort of like bees making their hive O_o. That would also explain why it doesn't melt in the lava.
@revenebo

Here's my very first random sketch so far. My keywords for creation are : scifi, apocalyptic, air, sky, industry, hatchery. Though the subject of this week is more fantasy, but I love scifi, so I think I should put something like that on the design. All feedback are welcome guys, thanks :rocker:

June 20th, 2011, 01:34 AM
@flame: while the composition in the long run might be sweet, right now it all just looks really flat. The tones you have don't really do the scale of it justice. Try pushing the values some, and giving the formations some dimension. I fall prey to this sometimes as well, being comfortable with silhouettes. Just because those shapes in the background might not have as much detail on them, light still wraps them.

Daaaamn nice tones.
I think that bright orange light kills your space a bit. It casts strong highlight on the pipe and makes it look like that thing it attaches to is only a short distance away. The rest of the picture implies that it is very far away O_o.

Mhugo: Very cool, also good practice that you sketched out more than one version. I need to do that more often.
Hard to say which one is cooler, but I would say the DeadTurtle one, because that is very unique!
JSpayde: Good idea to do a bunch of different thumbnails - I'd probably tighten up a few of your favorites. Right now... I like the top right the best but don't really see the eggs/nest. Maybe pick your favorite one and do 3 alteration of that one - you want to make sure you are very happy with the layout before you spend several hours rendering it.

Nickodemus- thats awesome, really diggin the overall space and how the fierce dragon birthed out eggs everywheres!
Dile-thats great, the architecture and whatever style you used to paint it really go well together, such a grand, menacing place! I expect to hear a pipe organ playing lol
Ros1-i like the structure there, how its cool, cloudy up top but you got hell going down underneath.
gunsbins- the scifi angle is great, and gutsy- I can imagine mutant dragon babies hatching out of the eggs, corrupted by the industrial chemicals getting piped through the place!
just a sketch for the upcoming, did a bunch of wc thumbs and honestly my problem was i couldn't decide cause I want to do every idea- i think the big patty of treasure the thing is resting on will look cool, just needs some proper perspective. maybe a lower angle

gunsbins Looks cool, but you might be running the risk of getting too abstract. My guess is, it's some kind of high-tec structure up in the clouds with wholes torn into it (possibly by dragons). Of course it would be good to see where the eggs are.

June 22nd, 2011, 02:50 PM
AMAZING stuff.
I want to get in on this. I'd like to do an earth dragon, inspired by an octopus. The female octopus lays eggs once in her life, just before she dies. Then she becomes food for the babies when they hatch. I'm thinking some kind of "super dragon energy essence" (whatever you want to call it) type stuff runs out of the dead mom dragon all over the hatchery area to produce a fertile area for the eggs.
We'll see if I have time to finish it by the 30th.

I'm jumping into this a little late, but here goes!
Basically, I tried to make a hatchery that combined all the elements, but right now it's basically just fire, water, and air. ...And it's high tech (can't seem to get away from scifi!)
This hatchery is located over hot springs (like Yellowstone) where the shells absorb the minerals from the vapor, as well as its heat. They're strung up and can be reeled in by mechanisms similar to ski lifts for inspection by humans. There are three levels above the steam, the lowest (hottest) for the youngest eggs. So it's fire because it's hot, water and air, because they're surrounded by both. Oh, and hatchlings will be cared for in those greenhouse-like rooms below.
Anyway, I'm starting with a 3D mockup in Max. (I'm primarily a 2D artist and pretty new to the program, but I'm able to get by with basic forms.) It will be a painting later on and changing a ton of stuff, but I find modeling in 3D helps me to think about the scene more, and plus, it's fun! :D

baah this sucks. My computer is broken so I won't be able to finish mine on time, unless new parts are delivered really quickly (unlikely if I know the company right). Anyways, good luck to everyone, its really cool to see what everyone is coming up with and how everyone is pushing themselves! KEEP IT UP! :D

Here is the new update, may be this is the last. I will finish it soon.

Figured I'd go for a softer, nurturing kind of vibe on this one (rather than compete will all the badassery on display). Here's a couple of progress images - looking forward to getting into the colour and just hope I don't run out of time.

Here's the final.
Not much to add by way of back story. I tried to make a safe, warm feeling environment in a secluded place for dragons to hatch their young. The eggs are incubated in the steaming, sulfurous hot-pools and the funneled, water shaped rocks offer roosts for the newly hatched.

Well been working on this for some time now, wow there are sum freaken great entries in this thread.
does any one know why I get dithering when I save my image for web use?
1265512
used the filter just to see where I could take this image, still got the whole of tomorrow to render and paint over everything, cave wall seems rushed and the viewer isn't really looking at the eggs, the warm color of my dragon head sort of pulls away from them, gotta figure this out, still ain't to bad just even tho this isn't my initial design as well but yeah anyways . . . . . . .

Wow, so many great entries :) Unfortunately not enough time to comment all of them :/
Aeronik - i love the space and rock shapes in your piece, can't wait to see it finished...
My second idea with air dragons... Still many things to refine... I'm going to finish both, but not sure which one add to the voting...

I should have used more time planning the composition. This is a perfect example of an under planned work that you try to fix afterwards.
I guess I'll call this one finished for now..
Next time I'll take special care in preparing the image properly before charging at it :)

Alive - Wow that's looking great!
Juki - Nice idea. I'd like to see more atmospheric fog coming through.
Ros1 - Digging that air piece. Great shot from above. The fire one was cool too. I'm just throwing this idea out there but maybe to add to the "air" effect you can have some dust blowing off the cliff?
AdrianNagorski - No idea about the dithering. I think maybe you can blend the dragon's head with the water. The orange on blue makes it pop out incredibly.
Aeronik - Wow. I can see that looking very awesome. I'm guessing its water from that waterfall? Cool concept.
Fenrysk - Nice idea. The perspective is a bit weird though.
Here is an update to mine.

I haven't done an EOW in so long! But I love the theme and there are so many awesome entries.
Here's mine so far, after doing three drawings I started a fourth one after looking at diseased trees (pretty gross stuff) and then I thought it would be neat for a rotting tree root to harbor gelatinous eggs.
Hopefully I can color this by the final

Great work everyone ! I'm so exciting with this week.
Ros1 Nice one dude, love the camera angle and those strong shapes. I just have some thoughts: I see the shapes and the heights of the columns were a little bit equal. I think maybe you could make the main column higher, even cross the frame, and put the eggs around it or something like that :D and may be some more color and light contrast between the main column and the other one will make the painting more better. Anw, great work man :D
Here's my final one, quite busy this time, but still can manage some free time to complete it, thanks for all your comments guys, and good luck with your entry !
I've choose air and choose the scifi theme for it, with a little bit creepy. The mutant dragon babies is growing up on a ruin sky-hanging industrial site, the eggs are hang on the chemical tubes. The keyword for creation is : sky, hatchery, industry, creepy scifi.

@JSpayde: especially love the way the rocks are textured in your entry!
this is my final.
here is some flavor text to go with it:
In the skies above the western regions, naturally occurring magic crystal formations have caused some of the mountains to float to high altitudes. These crystals are infused with the air elemental magic, and for this reason, when a crystal vein has reached critical mass, is able to lift a whole piece of a mountain to the sky. The dragons that roost in these floating mountains lay their eggs in areas where the crystals would form near or around the clutch, allowing the dragons to absorb some of the crystal properties very early on. The magically infused dragons are thus able to manipulate winds, allowing them to fly higher and faster than other dragons. Some of the greater dragons of this air brood have been known to have power to create storms various kinds, manipulating air thermals to cause even rain, ice, or snow.

Flavor Text:
Jacobi Hawkeye, treasure hunter extraordinaire, lowered himself into the dragons' nesting caverns. The sight that greeted his eyes was more majestic than even an experienced adventurer such as himself had been prepared for. Yawning fissures emitted strange turquoise light, suffusing the vast space with an eerie, misty glow. Globular columns of rock, shaped by the dragons' own strange powers, rose like solidified smoke from the cave's floor to the ceiling. The columns were honeycombed with irregular nesting cavities, many of which flickered and glinted from the incubation fires within. Several dragons were visible, emerging from their dens and gliding ponderously from column to column. Even those earth dragons, largest and heaviest of the great drakes, were dwarfed by their vast, cavernous hatchery.
Jacobi admired the view, then continued on, undaunted. He would have to descend and climb impossible rock faces, cross perilous gaps, and avoid the wrath of the nesting dragons. It was a task more dangerous than any he had ever attempted, but the earth dragons' eggs were shelled with gold, platinum, and all the precious ores of the earth, and studded with gems to boot. Such treasure could buy a kingdom, and was worth the risk of its recovery ten times over!

Here's my final; first ever EoW for me, so I'm pretty excited! It was a lot of fun to work on this so I'm definitely gonna try to get in on more of them!
Great job everyone, there's some awesome stuff in here!
And for some flavor text:
The ancient forest had remained untouched for thousands of years. Hidden on a large island surrounded by extremely treacherous seas and far away from other lands, it was free from all industry or intrusion upon its natural cycle, allowing the trees to grow to towering heights. Eventually the earth dragons discovered the island and realized its natural protection, given that the only access was through the skies, and so it became their primary nesting ground. Hidden safely away in the hills, wrapped up among the twisting roots, the eggs of these dragons sit safely unattended, waiting for the warm spring sun to signal their entrance in to the world.

Here it is - still within the deadline (Pacific hehe).
This is actually a completely 2D painting - no 3D rendering, though I did design this in 3D and use that as a guide for my drawing. It took a crapload of time and layers, but I enjoyed it.
This hatchery dangles the eggs over hot, steamy springs (inspired by Yellowstone). So it's fire AND water because they're in a steam environment, and obviously air because they're, well, hanging in air! Plus earth because they're soaking up some of the minerals that linger in the spring vapor, like sulphur (OK, well, that one's a bit of a stretch...). Anyway, people use these towers to cultivate plants as well, which will become one of the first foods for the hatchlings. The hatchlings would be stored in the bottom rooms as well (visible in the right). Currently vacant from this particular scene, so use your imagination! haha

Here is my final. I think this completely reaffirms why doing thumbnails before starting a final piece is so important. The composition gave me so much trouble, and it's because I went into it without a gameplan. That said, it was super fun to do.
Awesome entries from all over the place and definitely too many to start naming names. Great job all!
