Spartan Camp #186 - 50 gestures + Optional "Hatching Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 19th of June.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Hatching Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

A purely technical study this week!
Hatching is an old and practical drawing technique. I'm sure most of us are familiar with hatching to some extent, or it may come natural. If not, here's a small description;
By hatching, the illusion of tone and form is created by placing many parallel lines, usually wrapping around the form itself. Cross-hatching is an extension to hatching where hatched lines of different direction interlock to create a mesh.
For this weeks study, we focus on the drawing technique itself. Find a suitable piece of reference, whether or not anatomy related, and focus on the process of hatching.

[will add tutorials once found!]

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Did some 10 second gestures. This time I tried to not lift my pen, and I ended up with a mess of scribbles. It was pretty meditative though.

I also did some 30 second gestures. I think I got some more information in this set than in my last set of 30 seconds.

Hey Spartans! it's been a while. I'm back with some wonky-looking warm up gestures and lame memory studies.
Those look like you had fun Veriace!

Veriace - That's a nice method, although 10sec may be a bit fast even for that! Some of them went pretty well. Others didn't seem to work out because you did quite some correcting, even within that short time frame. Those explorational drawings can be very meditative indeed. Surprisingly, they can often end up really good. Perhaps because there's less pressure. Last post looking really nice already. You got tough poses that require a lot of detail or suggestion of detail.

Vertical - Nice! Loads of them. I think it's interesting how you've picked something up from a variety of sources. You don't stick to one approach but are very flexible, which (I'd say) is very good. I think it shows especially in the foreshortened poses; you tackle those relatively easily. If heads are giving you trouble... I think outdoor sketching (or indoor, wherever you find people to draw) is a really good exercise. Of the memory studies, the sitting ones seem to be strongest, don't you think?

I've noticed that posemaniacs has quite a few new figures, some of which are really nice. There's also a new subset of extremely muscular figures among the new poses which I really dislike. Just thought I'd give a heads up, hehe.

45sec digital referenced from posemaniacs, then a couple on my own. Trying to do this more intuitively and without construction.

First time doing this. Just discovered it today and did it on one sitting.Might do hatching later on tonight :zzz:
But I had a lot of fun and discovered that I prefer oil pastels because they feel more flowy and oh wow mine look so messy compare to all of yours ;__;

cannibalcarnivale - Hey there! Messy is not a problem really, especially since we are mainly considering gesture rather than detail. Once you got the anatomy, flow and gesture of a figure under control, detail may come by itself. They look like they are from a lifedrawing class, correct? I assume the different colours is so that you can overlap the figures without problem? Nice work!

LordLouis - Whew! great job. Nice combination of media as well as subject matter. I think it's very healthy to try different things, a good lesson for me too. Note that sometimes the gestures without construction lines look most natural. Construction can be limiting and simply 'drawing what you see' may get you drawings that are more interesting. Of course, construction has its own merits though. Just thoughts. Nice work!

I have never been in a lifedrawing class or proper art class in my life xD
And thanks, trying to make them less stiff.
And no, I just like a bunch of colors >>
