Spartan Camp #185 - 50 gestures + Optional "Action Gesture(s) Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 12th of June.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Action Gesture(s) Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
The topic itself is simple. Make sure the gesture conveys a sense of action. Consider things like movement, (im)balance, tension, force. Reference could come in handy, especially images or videos of sports and martial arts. You can do this optional study as part of the usual gestures (lots of action gestures!), but you can also go for a single, longer study.
As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

New to doing this, is it okay to post our gestures as we go? This seems like a lot of fun, look forward to looking at everyone's gestures.
Here's some 30 second gestures that I did.

These exercises are interesting. I don't know if i'll be able to complete a full 50 of these by that deadline, but i'll give it a shot.
God knows i need the practice lol.

eatmybrains- I really like how much detail you got into your gestures. I'm jealous ^^
Here's some more gestures. These I did 2 minutes each. Not as pleased with them as I had hoped, but I was starting to fall asleep as I did them.

Drawing humans is as hard as always... I'm slow.

More gestures. This time I did them in five minute intervals. I noticed I started getting lazy near the end.
Just in case anyone is interested, I use this nice little site (http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/index.php) for my gesture drawings. It's worth looking into.

And here's my 49th and 50th gesture. Both timed at 10 minutes, but i went a little longer with the second one on accident. I paused the image and forgot to put the timer back on lol

Well, I'm getting a little better at quantity this week |D
Used pixelovely for the horses - love their animal drawing tool, will definitely get a lot of use out of that
Used Dynamic Anatomy for some of the figures

I did the optional action study. I know I did a good bit of action poses in my gestures, but I wanted to get more in depth with it. I'd like to do some more, however I don't know if I'll have the time ^^

I think I got my gestures together for my first time of spartan camp.
Anybody know how to learn light and form from doing figure drawings? :s

It was really fun to do, and I hope I have uploaded all sheets (attachment manager died on me so needed to use external host)!
You have all so much amazing stuff here, I especially like your birds, camel! and the horses are so dynamic! I need to dig in some animal figures next week! :)

Looking good!
A new topic, as well as some critique for all spartans will be there tomorrow.
As for me; some gestures referenced after WW2 photographs. As a means to achieve more natural figures, I decided to focus less on details and more on the gesture and form itself. Balance, weight, that sort of thing. Was a good exercise.

I'm late again, I put together my pencil stuff, I should get rid of this habit, it takes much time and these are damn messy. And big. Strange, I thought I barely drew something... But these were too quick :(
I focused on faces, I neglected them for too long. After this warm up I will draw heads from different angles, it was always one of my weakest point.

Quick and mostly crappy dogs, foxes, whatnot:

Refd but the reference had a different angle (and I couldn't draw that):

Quick master study:

I wonder if I showed my Landseer master study before, I finished it on Tuesday I guess, I don't want to show off using a not from just the last week painting but it's my favourite master study ever, despite my problems with the environment :D

Now I'm not in a hurry, some words about the others's works :)
veriace: The 30 seconds ones are vague, maybe you should do 10 seconds - THEN you simply must to keep your lines quick and few ;) Focus on the flow of the body and don't even think - at least that's how I drew 10 second gestures back then... They were refreshing though I don't know if they helped me.
Your few minutes works are much more solid despite the hairy edges, the longer ones tend to be scribbly again. It seems you focus on the details a bit too much...
Eh I'm not sure these were of any help :(
Camel: Lovely sketch style on the animals, I love them :)
LordLouis: The 1-2 minutes sketches looks good, it seems you used some really quick loose strokes there... Did you spend some time without drawing, looking at/analyzing the reference?
manlybrian: Simplified skeletons doing normal stuff, why don't I draw such things more often I wonder... Nice skeletons, the fleshed out figures are weaker (the neutral front side standing pose isn't the easiest at all, I already realized that), I'm the same... Practice will help.
Well I tried... I'm much better if I need to say something about a specific topic or single picture :(

veriace;
Nice to try a variety of timers. Good exercise. You're doing well on building up a figure and your proportions are mostly good. Careful with 'patting' the lines too much, it seems you end up spending a lot of time refining every single line. Consequently, the difference in quality between the 2min and 5min gestures is not quite as big as you'd expect. You got some tough poses in there though! Nice job.
eatmybrains;
First thing I noticed how good the bottom left figure's upper body is. You also got some great detail going in some of the others. I recognize the baseball pose - I've tried to draw it before and somehow it is a tough one. If you're working digitally, you may want to sketch on a different layer to prevent ending up with some messy lines. Saves some erasing!Correct me if I'm wrong there.
Camel;
I love these. I think they're great as gesture drawings. They convey movement, weight and form. I always find it tough to keep those attributes in longer, more refined drawings. Also - horses are notoriously tough as far as I know. Though I don't always follow my own advice I'd still say: always follow up with a couple of gestures on your own! To solidify your studies.
Ran out of time.... more tomorrow. New thread's up!

Seconded... I almost always neglect this, I lack confidence but when I did it once, I was amazed I was able to draw rabbits in a position I didn't even see in my references around that time...
And I remembered I did show my deer before :bashful: But I kinda finished it and it's cool.
Could anyone recommend masters who made great animal painting? I've found some other Landseer paintings I'd like to draw but I'm choosy (and I need many reference, one quick master copy a day isn't too hard), I prefer wild beasts in a graceful or dynamic pose ;) And horses being dynamic or expressive. I need to practice dynamism anyway.

Robert Bateman is a good one. George Stubbs did a lot of horses. Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert also specialized with animal paintings. I'm sure you could probably Google many more :) Good luck!
