Spartan Camp #184 - 50 gestures + Optional "Folds Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 5th of June.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Folds Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
Folds! Nothing more, nothing less. Folds are instrumental in understanding and consequently drawing clothes or fabric. They can be surprisingly tough as their shape is very variable. They provide their own problem. Luckily, a quick search on the net brings up quite a few good tutorials. Folds are often categorized in different types, as can be seen in the links below. With a little logic (and practice!) we will aim to tackle folds this week!

You can use tutorials, photographic reference, actual clothes to create a still life, or anything else for this study.
As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Hi guys! This will be my first time participating. I appreciate the hard work y'all do. I'll try to contribute as often as my busy schedule allows.
I was working on a painting and having a lot of trouble with the squatting pose, so I drew, well, a bunch of people squatting. My reference photos come from typing a word like "squatting" in Google search, and using the thumbnails to draw from. In this way, I eliminate the desire to draw details and attempt to learn how the poses actually work. Not sure I quite got it. Then I drew some of my hand. Finally I attempted last week's optional while my dearest was practicing guitar, and hopped around to get interesting foreshortening, which I never do. I quite enjoyed the challenge! I think some things came out accurately, and others came out quite frightening. Hopefully I'll get to the drapery challenge as well.
Thanks for coordinating these, Anthis!

oh cool i try to focus on folds recently.
well these aren't all gestures but it's one pic, folds too.
i'm back from the hospital, surgery, metal and stiches. i was better but i'll be okay just i'm feeling a bit strange right now.
in the hispital i read a french children's book (i barely know any french so it's interesting), slept and drew.

Ah! I've been wanting to try one of these challenges for awhile - I finally noticed that there was a new one up, and now I'm behind already XC Oh, well, I'll do my best to catch up tonight.
Love the idea of this, as I really need some motivation to do more gestures and life drawing. I found those folds tutorials very helpful!

Bah, failed miserably at this - forgot how busy my weekend was gonna be. I'll have to upload the few other gestures I managed to get done sometime later.
Great looking stuff, guys! I'm impressed that ya'll manage to do so many!

I want to join as well- so nr. 185 will be coming up later? (It's already near 11pm over here but I assume this forum runs on some of the American timezones)

Impressive!!!!
kiwigarbage; No problem and welcome! The thumbnail idea is a good thought. Especially when considering the gesture, you may not want having to pay attention to those details. Add an indication of the neck if you can, that way placing of the head may make more sense. The foreshortened figures are excellent. It's interesting how satisfying the illusion of foreshortening can be. You're lucky to have a good model!
Camel; Seems you did it! I was extremely happy with the tutorials as well. Seems we used a similar approach. I thinkt the third scan especially is effective. Good use of the cast shadows, values are strong too. Looks like you're smudging a little though, or am I wrong there? Haha. I assume you're the model of the later drawings. Good studies.
MARMENTIDO; Not sure how you did those first couple of figures - they're amazing. I can't seem to get sharp digital figures. Are you using a large canvas? Anyhow, great job, really strong. Nice porn too. Recognized Basilisk,... anime can be pretty good ref. You may have gotten a little tired once you reached the optional.. haha. Great job, those organic lines are a good lesson for me.
shiNIN; Good to hear you're all right! Those Loomis figures are pretty strong. You seem to be holding yourself back a little, I think the constructed Loomis figures are good enough to warrant that you can more dynamic gestures! Tougher, maybe, but a better experience too. And more fun once you get 'into' it. Enjoy some rest though! Be well.
nathonicus; A new one is up! It's a weekly acitivity, free for everyone!
