I know we're not supposed to say 'I suck', so i'll just let the picture speak for itself. It's supposed to be one of those undersea vents, with some kind of see through worm thing on it. Not even judical use of blur and levels could save it!
I spent nearly an hour on that, and now i'm really downhearted, i've taken a backwards step today. :(
Please rip it to shreds, I need some hints on exactly where I went wrong with this one...

oh man Defunkt, i love that
beeglebug- as soon as i read 'underseaa vents' i knew what it was, but at first i thought it was a valley .... yeah i think the crack is getting to me.
anyways all i can think of is maybe add something to show scale, like a little fish or a shrimp or something, or attract attention to the worm somehow. like put eyes on it.

Hey beeglebug,
I don't think it's a bad picture at all. It may not have come out the way that you intended, and that will frustrate you. But I don't think it's a bad pictcure and I especailly don't think that you suck.
I was able to identify exactly what your critter was (transparent worm) around an undersea vent immediatly. That there is an accomplishment: you've gotten across your idea and have communicated it well. And I didn't need to read the description to figure out what it was!
The only thing that remains is to refine it some. You've got the shape and color impressions down, now just sharpen it with some finer shadows and details.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
~Oreg.

i agree with oregano. Beeglebug i could tell what it was immediately. maybe a little shadow and hilight to really make it pop, but no need to tear it to shreds. i like it.
artistanbul.. whew, man, awesome fish, erm dog, er.... thing. whether or not it is a blurpy pic, it still rocks.
jeebus... same thought i had with the light. i kinda wanted to go with a little more of the deeper ocean stuff.
defunct... awesome dood. the grain really adds to the composition well.

Yo yo. Two underwater topics in a row. Missed the mall. Tsk.
Village idiot: Nice work. I LLLLLLLLLOVE it!! My guess itīs gonna be dark again ina few seconds.
Legato: Thatīs cool fer ten minutes. The sucker at the fin is a fine detail
Beeglebug: I agree with the others. I could tell right away. Add a sharper edge of white(mebee with 70%) right before the shine ceases and a glossy highlight going over the body. At least I would try that.
Aristanbul: Cool to see the "evolution" of the pic. What tools do you use btw???
Marvin 5: Childbook cool. Itīs a halfdragon. Thereīs a german childrens book where one need to cross the land of dragons and get help from a kiddie halfdragon.
Defunct: OOooooooh YEAH! Thatīs super eerie.
Jebus: Right on.
Well, hereīs mine.

I'm really getting a handle on this underwater thing... It takes lots and lots of layer editing to make it believable.
@village idiot - Awesome color & lighting as usual. The blurring makes it feels very dreamlike.
@Helzer - Terrifying. I'd recommend making the people's heads/torsos just a shade lighter above the water so it's easier to tell that they're floating. (I'm assuming they are because of their poses).

Thanks for the advice guys, i'm not going to do any more on todays picture, but I will take it all on board for future stuff.
One of my new resolutions is to not go back to old work and faff about with it, one of my worst habits is not leaving stuff alone. So, while I am here on the DSG at least, when it's done it's done, no matter how bad I think it is.
Oh, and here's my opinions for today:
villageidiot - superb, inspired me to try some limited pallete stuff too
artistanbul - design wise, not one of your best, but dont beat yourself up over the style, it looks good.
Helzer - cool Jaws motif going on there, and I like the colors
xbiten - Nice work, his skin looks like Ben Grimm! (The Thing)
Zkreso - Thats some cool colorwork, I love that style *adds to list of things to try out*
Defunct - top marks for atmosphere!
My winner fot the day though is VillageIdiot, the picture tells a story, establishes a mood, everything, its great.
See you guys tommorrow!

thanks people.. bbwolf, I used Aura. Tool: pencil, my intention was to render it thoroughly in pencil, but after a little time I got super bored and took a big so-called watercolor brush, laid some values here and there, smeared it around. repeated about thrice. I did some highlights in white pencil but got bored again. I need a cure..

here is my shot for today. worked on it here and there for about an hour to hour and a half. sketched it in pencil, coloured in photoshop 7, added depth and a few touchups in painter 7. was trying for a little guy casting a huge shadow. didnt make the shadow big enough to pull it off tho.

Jaba - conceptually, I like yours the best
needs some work, mostly just some more details to make it interesting- textures, etc.
if you ask me, artistic skill can be learned, but creative ideas like that are the most important thing.

I did a quick thumbnail of this at work today and had to go home and sktech it out. I got too carried away with the octopus that I think it took over the scene more than that of the dragon, but I like the outcome.
About 1 hour in Painter.

dagreengo ... thanks that really means a lot. thats kinda what i focus more on, on my dsgs, taking the concept a little further, twisting it to either show something that someone didnt think of, or just to get a laugh. i agree that the skills can be picked up and learned thru practice (practice practice practice) and i am working on that. but nine times outta ten, coming up with the idea of what to draw is where the fun is drawn from (no pun intended). if you can come up with an idea that you are really excited about, then you are going to come out with an alltogether better rendering.
wow some awesome stuff today guys. really cant comment b/c there are so damn many outstanding ones.
well all i gots to go b/c VIVA LA BAM is on then its straight to the slumber mill for me.
ps. Mike C. u really dont post enough on the DSG. miss your work man. great stuff, generic or not!

This is my first time putting anything in here, I've just recently stumbled over this site and am now addicted. Going to art school in the fall but have done nothing but photography for along while. Trying to get my sketching hands back.
I know it's a little over the suggested limit but this took i guess about 4 hours.
