Hey Josh, and other guys, looking good. I'm sorry its taking me so long to put up some new sketches, but I've been kind of busy lately. In mean time, here are two pieces from Jeff Murchie, a good friend of both Joshua the James and I. Jeff just ended a freelance contract with LucasArts doing concept work for Red Rock RTX. He's been too busy to post, so he gave me the go-ahead to put these up. Enjoy...

MindCandyMan
December 17th, 2002, 07:49 AM
I love these ones. You should do more of these after you finish your robots. You guys should see these in person they look even better. Fozzybar...if you married smeagol that would make me your brother-in-law...no offense but if you look like your avatar I would be embarassed to have you in our family. :D ;)

December 17th, 2002, 03:50 PM
Wow...thanks guys! I appreciate the comments. However, I think I'll steer clear of the whole "marriage" theme that seems to be running through some of them! LOL! :D

Joshua...you're so right about the color stuff. I think it's evident that I'm not as comfortable or proficient with color and it's one of my goals in the near future to attack that problem. I'll be on the boards a lot looking for help. As soon as I get my Wacom I will be hitting that with a vengeance. It's an obstacle that looms in front of me but I'm determined to get over. Thanks for the feedback.

Going to see The Two Towers tonight at a midnight show!! Can't wait!!!! Maybe I'll get some more creature ideas from that. We'll see!

Wow! Lately it seems like my every artist I'm a huge fan of is posting on these boards!!!

Mike (feeb)...I've long admired your work and am a HUGE fan of your pencil work. Very, very nice. Crisp and extremely interesting to look at. I've used your style as an inspiration from time to time with my own pencil work and would like to get into more of the sepia toned mediums like yourself. Can you explain why you like the Verithin brand of pencils? I'd just be curious to hear what you have to say about them. I've tried using ColErase terra cotta but am very unsatisfied with it.

Again, I'm a big fan. Great work!

Montross
December 18th, 2002, 07:43 PM
I know this is besides the topic but how do I post drawings on here and how do I make a picture under my name. If anyone can help please email me or message me. I PM a Art leader but he hasnt replied. I appreciate the help.:evilbat:

feeb
December 19th, 2002, 06:25 AM
...also, one big drawback of verithin, is that they're not very forgiving. Like the scan above of the little assassin (in the girl's hand), you can still see lines I tried to erase (fingers). This is one of the reasons I think that the pencil nearest to perfect, isn't a pencil at all, but a tweaked brush in painter.

-Just an afterthought.

here's one I did for this thread,
both underwater creatures I guess
it's quite difficult I;m happy I came up with the second one :) it's got a sort of spider web tail to trap things, when it does catch something it 'clenches' the poor thing very hard onto its rear body where there are those spiky (venomous?) things, ouch :P

Zeitgeist: Thanks, man... I try. :)
MindCandyMan: Thanks again, dude. Maybe I'll actually get around to doing some new stuff, soon.
Feeb: Holy god! Thanks, man. I've been waiting for you to do more to that piece. I saw what you started of it, on your website and it had me drooling even then. There's no reason why you shouldn't be working on the next LOTR movie, right NOW! For God's sake, man, send 'em your sketches, already. You are a towering badass.
Montross: I like the shading and detail you have in your creature. Draw it from a 45 degree angle, next time, though. The static, side-view makes it look flat. Keep posting.

feeb
December 20th, 2002, 08:34 PM
lol.... I appreciate the compliment, but sadly, the LOTR movies were all made at once. By the time I'd seen my first preview, it was too late. Ah, well, right? I hope to get work in film someday, so we'll see.

smeagol71, i have to think of landmate's brainfart as i saw this big brainy creature...oh man...i don't want to finish my thoughts...:bash:

I don't want to say "hey, your creatures are cool!", so i am writing it: "hey, your creatures are cool!"...the monkey looks as he doesn't like that you drew it in 15 minutes..."c'mon...gimme some more effort, you suck...i'll blow you away..."....things that happen, when you're drawing laser-guns instead of bananas in small monkey hands...

...time to sleep...i'm babbling...

Hooray! Prom, the master of PS painting has come to the creature thread! Man, I love that stuff, can't get enough of it!!!

Question...how much reference do you use for the physically real, more "familiar" animals you do? It seems you draw from a variety of different animals for each. Is this from memory or drawn from several pics you have in front of you or in mind?

Love the Metroid monster, really cool. That last one looks like Jigglypuff on crack! LOL!

Jens: Thanks for the kind words. You may be right about the front legs. I was going for really narrow shoulder blades and kind of a spindly look there. You're right though, it does look a little weird. To answer your question, the subject size is like 5"X6", so not too big. I usually work right around that size when sketching these characters.

Targete:
Boy would I love doing creatures full time he he. You and me both brother!!!! That is my dream job. I appreciate your encouragement. Coming from an individual such as yourself doing such high quality work I feel very humbled! Thanks!

Zipp - they look that clean in real life...he uses just a green pencil...it's sick...I watch him sketch them all the time...makes it look easy.

andreasrocha - This is a nice concept I really like it a lot. I like the rendering as well great job!

waylanderx - That kicks total butt...I love the texture on the alien on the left and one on the bottom right. Who am I kidding...they are all great...awesome job.

Elek - I love that pen one...the first one...rendered really well...pen is so hard and you have done a great job.

Beautiful as usual Smeagol, my only comment and minor it is would be to slide his shoulder/deltoid a tad bit towards his neck but keeping the rest of his arm in place..that way he will look like he has more bone structure. Sweet my man keep it up.

Thanks for the comments everyone, they're very encouraging and encouragement is something I always could use!

Targete: I see exactly what you mean. I'll think I'll go back and rework that shoulder per your advice. I was trying to accentuate the bone structure a bit and that would help I think. Thanks for your gracious comments as well, they are much appreciated!

ZippZopp: Thanks! For these last few sketches I've worked with a green col-erase pencil, scanned it into Photoshop, and adjusted the levels a bit to clean up the look. That's about it. By the way...your painting of Minas Morgul is fantastic!!!!

WaylanderX: Always been a fan of your work here and on your site! What great creature concepts, keep posting!!!

And last but certainly not least...thanks bro! See you on Monday if not before! :fruit:

I disagree with that, actually. I love the little guy's face. He's tiny! He's doesn't need to look like his brutish friend. The way you have it.....it looks like they are of the same planet (same idea for the ears and the "antennae" coming off their heads), but obviously of different origins.

You kept the design scheme throughout them both, but made them unique.

keep it. ;)

looking good man.

a crit on the females ass, you should bring the darkneed buttock down more. I would work on doing some very basicly anatomy line drawings. very geometric shapes with planes. The shoulders on the male seem a bit large. The easiest way to learn the arm is learning the arm muscles as big ovals and pretend you are drawing them as clay cause they stretch.
Keep it up though, these are great!

Interesting style, Maxx M. You got your own thing going there.

That bug-like critter, which is so full-rendered, looks awesome, but really "flattens" because of the values. The legs get lost over the torso, and things like that, because you have the torso darker than the legs. Remember that things that are closer have more contrast... brighter brights, and darker darks. Keep this in mind on your next insane render.

Keep developing this cool style, Hoss.

I was originally gonna post these in the demon thread, but i think these guys have more of a creature vibe. This is a collection of 3 to 5 minute sketches on yellow post-its or scrap paper I did at my day job last year to ensure that I drew something everyday. Bring on the little monsters!http://www.image4u.org/patloboyko/lildemons3.jpg

Top notch stuff.

Easily the best on this thread.

The loose brush strokes reminded me of Frans Hals the legendary Dutch Master.

Guild Navigator: Is that Bob from Commander Keen in the second picture?

Guild Navigator
June 16th, 2003, 11:01 AM
Well, I'm aware of Commander Keen but I never played it. It might be possible that I saw a picture of "bob" once and it registered subconciously with my head meats.

Charismatic monsters here guys. Davi, from yours I especially like the animal based designs... my recurrent nightmare is that my wife's gerbils are exposed to excess amounts of cosmic radiation and become something like your horrendous space rat.

Did this one while on the train today

I was thinking of a Goblin Demolitions Expert...some sadistic little goblin that loves to blow things up:
