View Full Version : How to start drawing?

Here is my problem, I've been drawing since I've been like 8 years old. From ugly graffiti to now fantasy type characters and whatnot..

But for some reason, I stay A) mediocre at sketching and B) real bad at coloring things. When I start a sketch, and I've put in more than 15 minutes, I don't even remotely think about deleting it ..I just sketch on and ruin it most of the time because the start sucked, and I can't draw anything anyway it seems.

Anyway, when I do manage to get a good sketch, or start from a sketch that someone else did (I tried to color Sam Woods' stuff and so on) I always take YEARS for what others do in 5 minutes (they say..) and I never get to finish it because I either start to hate it, or it takes too long and my attention is wearing off.

I've seen tons of tutorials about drawing with tablets and photoshop, I've tried some, but never got it working like the tutorial writer intended ..

So long bla bla, how the heck do I get started good? How do you (experienced people that do what takes me hours in minutes) do it? Any real good tutorials that cover the basics of anatomy, poses, and sketching/coloring in a way that I might understand? ...

Here are two of the things I started, tried to color, and never got further than they are here :)

Hey Fyrn, hmm i cant say much but it seems like you just leaped into things. I suggest that you backtrack and go back to pencils first then coloring later. First off, heres a link to Loomis' book which teaches you anatomy. spend a lot of time studying each part and draw then drawing the parts from reference photos, real life and or sculptures.

goodluck.

btw try not to expect to be really good right away, remember, you are comparing yourself ot artists who spent a lot of time and practice to get to where they are now. Also note taht they were once like you an i.
