View Full Version : Drawing In Class

I wanted to make a thread where we could post work done on notebook paper without being ashamed. I think that doodling in class is a great thing. I plan on dumping 5 sketches a day from my archive (stuff I drew in high school when I should've been taking notes) and work up to the stuff I draw in meetings now.
I hope others will reply. Again, this is work done on some sort of paper made for a different use (notebook paper, graph paper, legal pads, post-its, cardboard, etc) and prefereably art you did when you were supposed to be doing something else.

It seems that the creative juices really get flowing in situations where your attention is supposed to be focused on something entirely unrelated to the masterpiece that unfolds in, around and in complete oppostion to margins on a sheet of paper. Hell, if drawing was forbidden during classes...I think I'd go nuts...
Anyway, to make some sort of point:

Just a small taste. (There is an entire section devoted to this very topic on my site...)

So, Zeb, where are you?:D Anyway, I just wanted to remind people that these are old, like, way old, the furthest one at the top was from high school.
I drew this one in Sociology because there was this cute girl I wanted to hit on and when I had finally gotten up the courage she stopped coming to class. She eventually came back and I got to hit on her, but, somehow, even though I used the word "date" and even though we were meeting in a public place, she thought it'd be okay to bring a date of her own. I've had a long history of girls named Rachel hating on me.

last year in english I had a 3-subject notebook. i was supposed to have note in 2 and a journal in one. I completely used up the middle section (not like I was gonna take notes on romeo and juliet anyway) onece, i got my journal back from being graded. Big red ink, it said "why are there so many violent sketches where your JOURNAL should be?" good times... I hate shakespeare. I have no idea what happened to that notebook though or i'd post some pretty pictures.

Awesome story SCARECROW; it's funny how looking back at these old sketches brings up such vivid memories you would've otherwise forgot (well, at least I find it as such).
5 mo'
These first two are from a phase I went through to get my creativity going. I was drawing way too many figures and not concentrating on anything else. As a way to think more abstract (which has helped me with my figures, by the way) I started drawing what I thought certian songs looked like:
What the hell was in my room last night?: BUTTHOLE SURFERS

One day my whole dorm was watching TV. A movie came on called WAXWORK where people were being killed in a wax museum. The wax was coming to life and stuff. Really bad, but nobody could leave for some reason. Instead we just started quoting the movie like it was comic genius -- "Ooh, that's GOTTA hurt!" -- so anyway, after it WAXWORK II came on and we were able to turn that off after 15 minutes. In its defense, the movies sucked, but made the sequel transition very well.

These first two are based on comic characters I created (the comic should be up on my site within the next week, so if you don't see it, PM me and gripe). One day in Advertising I decided to draw chibi charactures of them.

Okay, 5 more. Today though, the sketches are very close to the sketches I'm doing in class now. The last one of this five was done last semester, so C+C appreciated. Of course, I'm not going to go back and re-work any of these... unless someone really thinks I should...
Anyway, I always like getting an ego boost, and love the cutting remarks as well.

Sorry, so sorry mr. right.
Exams and what not...college is a bitch!
Seems as though we all have that sociology problem , so I'm glad to see that it isn't just me.
Here's a batch of class sketches. And for some reason I feel the need to explain that I don't tend to do full drawings in class, I generally just quickly lay out ideas as they come to me. So, the reason why they look like quick sketches is becuase they are.

That is a helarious pic right.
I didn't say I wanted to see the pic though, (i'm still glad you posted it!) I said that this thread could quickly turn into another "pretty girl thread." People posting "here is some girl in my class that i'd like to...<insert something here and no pun intended>...but i drew her instead"
Ok, it was late and I'm fried, OK. Hehe.
I love this thread though. I sometimes see people in some of my big lectures just doodling ( I hate that word) so the next class I'll sit behind and off to the side of them to get a look at what it is they "doodle" and most of the time I see silly faces, or their name in bubbly letters, or little hearts and stars and other misc. stuff, but this thread really shows the creativity that can come from boring classes (like sociology...rrr).
Anyway, sorry to drag on like that. I really like the pic of that girl, very funny!.
Oh, and shadow, those pngs take forever to load...atleast on my crappy dial-up they do. Damn cheap parents...rrr.

Oh, and I did edit my post. Chopped out a huge chunk. Like I said...late night and sleepy.

Now that I think about it, I really wish I saved all those menus from resteraunts that I've eaten at and drawn in over the years. Would make for an interesting addition (I know the thread is called "Drawing in Class," but...you said it could be anything as long as it was drawn while you were supposed to be doing something else).
Not that big of a ATHF fan. Sometimes it's on and sometimes it's not.

hi,
it is amazing how much u have improve.
you can see bigger result if you draw it on blank paper.
also, it seems that you have stuck on level, now, try to advance yourself, reach the higher drawing level.
challange yourlse.f
Zeb
May 4th, 2004, 10:22 PM
Leon, the point of this thread is to show work that was done on lined paper and preferably when you were supposed to be doing something else. We all know that unlined, drawing paper makes for a better sketch.
As for improving, who would you be directing that towards?
Myself?
mr.right?
shadow?
Laying a blanket statement like that when there are several posting artists is kind of pointless? And mentioning room for improvement, and a "higher drawing level" is sort of an assinine statement as well. For obvious reasons that there is ALWAYS room for improvement regardless of your current abilities and skill. Besides, this isn't Zen Buddhism.
Now that I've got that out of my system...
I know I have to improve, my class sketches are rather boring as compared to work by mr.right and shadow. And I don't feel that my skill really shows through in those works. It's more of a backwords look at the things I do. I still post here becuase it is worthwhile to bring forward your shortcomings and have a "forum" to compare even the smallest of sketches to help "improve" (as you put it).
Now, I may have just launched off the deep end here, and I'll make no excuses for that.
I'd like to see more people participating here though. Like I've said a bunch of times already, I KNOW MORE THAN JUST THE HANDFULL OF US DRAW WHEN THEY SHOULD'NT BE!!! So, let's see them.
Even though this is mr.right's thread, I'd still like to thank those who've participated so far and wholly encourage more people to contribute!
(This is the LONGEST post I've contributed so I might as well throw in an image right?!)

What you'll want to do is scan your images in with a high dpi (it you're taking pictures on a digital camera, you're just going to need a real good camera).
I scan my images in at 300 dpi, which is industry standard for poster-sized art (at least around here), and to post them online I change the dpi to 72.
If you're still having problems, try re-sizing the image by pixels; in photoshop--> Image: Image Size --> change the proportions of you photo by pixels (good rule of thumb, 350 pixels for the shortest side). IMPORTANT: make sure you are constraining proportions!
I don't have anything to post; just taking a break from animating. Working on the sound on one right now. Should have it up on my site tonight.

stacy your work has a real nice characature feel to it, and that really pushes the helarity of both of those situations.
as for resizing, well, listen to mr.right, he does it all the time.
there are a bunch of methods to resizing, and constrain proportions is your friend.

thanks zeb and thanks for the help mr.right
ill try that.....
hey this is probably not the right place to ask this...probably launch or something.....buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut does anyone know what the hell that thing is next to everyone's name? i think mine says Swordsman but it keeps changing...i understand the ones that say 'administrator' and crap... but...what...the hell......does mine stand for? can i change it?
PeggyChung
May 7th, 2004, 12:48 AM
well the photbucket compresses it more than what you have resized it so it makes your drawing looking choppy whcih is what it does to mine too
the swordsman means how many posts you have made. it chances due to how many posts you have made ex: 250= x
500 posts = xx and so on. somewhere in the loungue you could search it up, there is a list of it. some people have custom ones because i dont know what. and pros get "professional" on theres.

Please, do not even hint at that.... (I'm paranoid).
But seriously, I'm just hard at work on these animations for my presentation on Saturday. I'm working on the last one now, but don't expect a serious post from me (ie: one with drawings from class) until about Sunday.
edit: Also, I have no idea about how photobucket works -- I link to my personal site. Sorry.
edit again: Hey! Yesterday I was a SOLDIER and now I am a WARRIOR!
However, if everyone's chill, I've got screenshots from the last animation-->

As you can see, my wolves need work. Considerable work.

I was looking at the work of T. Ely. Simply incredible! I don't know if you can find things about him online, but the Harry Ransom Center here in Austin has a considerable collection of artist's books. And I'm talking original copies! There's nothing cooler than seeing a BOOK someone made and painted in BY HAND! Anyway, I was looking at his book and started to copy a panel when I was overtaken with an odd sense of creativity. Hence, this piece.

Zeb: in the last post you made, the one with "heads", I actually liked the one you think is "crap" better than the "refinement". What makes you think it's crap? I liked the light on the hat and the bigger face. Also, your pen shading is enviable!
Stacy: Sorry for not welcoming you to the board sooner. I really like your work. So much "character" in your characters. I also like your loose pencil style. Are you using a regular no. 2?
Lady Lioness: I was expecting some wolves out of you... :D
Shadow: I'm getting red x's man. Is everything alright? You changing hosts? I really liked seeing your posts; I hope you give us more. Your sketches had a lot of work put into them.

Ah, I don't get online for a couple days and people start contributing, well, it's about time.
I'm another year older, and yet feel no older. Twenty is definitely a strange age to be. One year short of legal gambling and drinking, but no longer a teen ager...strange feeling.
Anyway...the responses...hmmm.
stacy: you're not thrashing the thread, so no worries. we're happy for the contributions.
mr.right: I just find the "crap" version to be very ugly...and thanks for the props on my pen work...as you probably noticed the "Freehand Fantasy" pic on my site was also done all in Bic Pen...there is just something about the smooth feel of those cheap ass pens that works. School is just about over for me for the semester as well, and that leads me to a question, where do we go with this thread?
SirRon: thanks man, you'd probably laugh if I told you how long I've been drawing that same damn thing...YEARS! There, I said it...hehe.
I think that is all...I could be wrong. Sue me, or rather...don't.

But seriously, Zeb, you bring up a good point:
Where does it go from here? I realize that there are still people in high school here and that there is still plenty of time for ya'll to do more work, but...
SUMMER!
It's upon us. So... do we just come back to this thread in the fall? Or do we make this a thread for notebook paper work? I don't know that I'm going to be doing much more work on notebook paper outside of school, so... I'm up for suggestions.
edit: my suggestion is to take the doodles we've done on notebook paper and make them serious works of art. And it doesn't have to be our own drawing from this thread... unless people don't want me touching their stuff...
My last three (tenatively). School's over for me.

Responses first:
LadyLioness: sweet pic, and I don't see why the wolf is so upset with little ol' me...hehe. Really, cool. Damnit, one thing bothers me though...why put "crapness"?
Will: funny pic, and welcome.
mr.right: man, your work rocks. So inspiring. As for the octopi (not squid...although they may seem squiddish), that girl just begged to be the victim of vicious oceanic creatures...hehe.
Gee, no one else? Damn.
Moving on. Where do we go? Honestly, I'm hoping this thread lives through our little hiatus' but I'm thinking that there should be a way that we can maintain the thread throughout summer "break." Hopefully people will continue to post and more and more people will join in on the fun.
I'm considering mr.right's idea to take this ideas we've been toying with during classes and pushing them further and it is actually rather surprising that he mentioned that today...creepy really for the following reason:
During Brit Lit I today we started Paradise Lost by Milton and I was inspired to do this drawing (that I may never do). We were going over Book I in which Satan falls from Heaven and I was struck with this image of how it would look if I were creating it. I did a few concepts in my notebook, but haven't scanned them yet, so be patient. Perhaps tomorrow.
Here's the overall layout though:
The page is seperated into two pieces, one being two-thirds of the page and the other, obviously, the remaining third. The top third contains three panels. One in the top right, one dead center, and the third at the bottom left. In the top right panel is Satan, falling and surrounded by fire (think Meteors) and still appearing like an angel. In the dead center panel he'll still be falling, but pieces of him will be burning off and his body will show initial signs of demonic tranformation. The bottom left panel will show him falling, but fully transformed into a demon. Finally, the bottom third will be one whole panel that shows Satan chained in the lake of fire in Hell.
Damn, that was a lot to type and probably a lot to read. Sorry, but it's been in my head ALL day. Expect the images tomorrow, and I'll try and crank out a few more as an added bonus.
Out.
*mr.right PM me or email me if you want to try and come up with something to take up Summer Break...

Welcome, welcome.
Thanks for contibuting.
First and foremost, resizing is your friend!!! Those images are large and I'm not that avid a fan of scrolling, atleast not sideways...hehe.
Your work where you laid out the shapes and lines first are your most solid work, obviously, becuase you took the time to work through that more annoying aspects of drawing.
the Pterodactyl lacks contrast, much, most, of the shading blurs together and flattens (and distorts) the image.
For the warrior guy. Anatomy is the issue here. Follow the same methods you took with fleshing out the stick figures and you should see improvement.
Sorry if you weren't looking for crits...I just couldn't help it.
Thanks for posting, and keep em coming.

mr.right, I watched your church animation and I love it. The sketchy style is so cool. I think I'm missing something though...I don't get the soap thing...I really like the BG images on your site too. They also have that sketchy, and blotchy coloring that really looks cool. I'm really liking your site.

I can't believe we've made it to page 3! And as another surprise, I have 5 pictures to post today! A couple from work, one from church, and one ... like we talked about...
Zeb: hey thanks! I think the "Church" animation is probably my best, although others are funnier. The way my site is set up right now, I haven't finished the pages or people on them, so... but... several people say that they like the people unfinished... don't know what I want to do.
http://www.right.demonicpillbug.com/pics/notebook/3_29s.jpg
Okay, question: which looks better to ya'll because I tried two different scanning methods. Do you like seeing a refined picture better, or seeing the actual pencil strokes. I personally like looking at this thread and being able to tell what media was used, but then again, the other one looks cool too.

May 11th, 2004, 10:19 PM
I really like the unfinished, sketchy look. It adds an immense level of character to the site.
Thanks for the pic. I've dled a few of your images to play around with, so I'll see what I can come up with in the next few days.
As for the sketch vs refined sketch...while the refined version is cleaner and easier to read, the original sketch is more of what this thread stands for. (Atleast to me, anyone who feels otherwise can say so.)
Well, here's the concept I said that I would post in reference to my "Paradise Lost" idea:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Notebook42.jpg
I find it odd that this is the first time that I've scanned a lined paper image and the scanner dropped out the lines on its own...scary.

I'm glad to see so many posts! I'm sorry about the hiatus, but finals are over for me now. Also, I found a yachtload (which is bigger than a boatload) of old sketches done on the back of old papers. I don't know how old some are, but I'll try to post the older ones first and work my way up. These aren't as old as high school though. These are all college pics. I should be able to go back to 5 a day.
Zeb: Thanks for coloring my pic! I see the squid/octopi battle is just heating up...
Will: Waiting for a post in pen... You said you'd try.
Sancho: I'm not sure what to say to you. On the one hand, there is much to be said for re-creating charachters consistently (without variation that makes you think they are different characters) -- I assume you didn't use exact reference for the Sonic pictures. Is that eyeball guy your own creation? I think I'd like to see more of him if he is your own. My favorite is the first on yellow paper. I'm not saying you shouldn't post more Sonic stuff -- it's just harder to critique, and I'd like to see more like the first yellow paper pic. Welcome to the thread. (oh, also, is that last robot from RPG World?)
Skid: PLEASE RESIZE!!!
Ardjet: Very cool! Have you considered coloring something and posting it in the creatures thread? I suggest you cruise through it if you haven't yet. It's a good thread.
Little Jackson: It took me a while to figure out that it was a face. You may consider (and this is going to be hypocritical because my early posts are notorious for not doing it.) cropping closer.
Good work all around.
fun practice: made one new stroke each box and had to keep all the old strokes the same. It's tough to reproduce thigs so accurately.

Hey, thanks Will and mr.right. They joy of colors.
So what're you two using to color. I'm rockin PS7.0.1, or shorter, 7. I have Painter 8, but no codes to crack in yet...so I haven't been able to try it out. Open Canvas is fun, but I don't find it that acceptable for coloring. Damn PS has ruined me possibly.
I'll try and get a few more done soon for you guys, but It's so hard to pick...I wish shadow's stuff was still up...boohoo.
Thanks again, and mr.right: don't take so much time off next time. You had me worried. Hehe.

Oh...and expect more octopi soon...or possible evil squids!!! Now with extra tentacles!!!

Wow! We've come a long ways! Totally awesome.
Because of moving, I no longer have internet and have to come to school (shouldn't be a problem, I work here) to put anything up. So if you prompt me to put something up (for example I need to get a squid pic up) it's going to take me a little longer. Just fair warning.

Skid: I saw your links. 1 it looks like you put a lot of thought into your sketches and 2 it looks like you did some heavy pen layering to maker areas darker (specifically the slime one) I know we've been encouraging people to work with a ballpoint pen because it's a misunderstood media, but I think I'd like to see some pencil work out of you.

Who would have thought that was back when mr.right started this and no one posted that we would make it to page four? And with more people posting each week no less!
So, I have a request...for anyone that wishes to try it out. I want to see a "while you were supposed to be doing something else" sketch of people around you turning into plants or trees. Sort of an expirement to meld the human form with a more natural form. This would be an execellent way to work on contours for both humans and foliage have wonderful primary and secondary contours...anyway...take your time with it, or just ignore me all together.
Have an image:

mr.right: i have no idea why we're the only ones from the beginning still posting, although in the begininng we were the ONLY ones posting practically. i don't mind who it is that gets drawn...in fact i might try one out later on tonight...just so it doesn't look like i'm not willing to do my own stuff.
Ardjet: hey hey, you're givin me more to color!!! nice.
brkofdon: amazing.
LadyLioness: don't say such things about yourself. one must have faith in their own abilities first and foremost. If you don't believe than you won't grow as an artist.
Alright, that about covers everyone.
Now, everyone who reads this thread or is consistently LURKING out there...I insist that you participate. Seriously, wer'e up to page four and about 80% of this stuff is by either mr.right or myself. Damn lazy people. Hehe.

Well, all of my ugly people are in therapy. They want to be nice people, mostly. It goes without saying that most of them are in anger management classes, and several of them need to learn to hold their tongues. Skid's friend: my apoplogies if any of my people were rude to you -- somehow, though they are not real.
Otherwise, I love coming back and seeing hella new posts. Tender.
.cfb:  I'll come up with more constructive comments when I can get my jaw back up.
TheBug: I don't know how I missed your first post, but your work is awesome. a hell of a a lot of detail in that turtle. I'd love to see you take on Zeb's metamorphosis idea.
Zeb: Speaking of which, I have drawn a piece that combines a decaying bonzai tree and my friend playing video games (secret meaning????) but I can't post it yet. Thanks for coloring my dude! I think coloring looks best with the pencil work one, so if I do a drawing in pencil, I won't try to convert it from now on. Also, it looks like you are using the burn and dodge tools. And if you are, I shouldn't be able to tell, my friend... The pic by Skid you colored is your best color work yet.
All: I'm sorry not to post artwork. I've been doing plenty, but cannot FTP my work from my computer and have yet to find a computer here where I can. I'll figure something out and then I'll have a way huge art dump.
Later Days,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :eat:
Zeb
May 26th, 2004, 09:47 PM
I understand completely mr.right. As for skid's piece I didn't burn or dodge at all. The shadows are mostly darker values of an approximate color...if that makes sense. And the whites are actually 10% greys with small white highlights added. Argh.
I used to never burn and dodge, but for these quick one layer pieces it tends to make it quicker and easier to lay down values quickly. How redundant.
Any tips though on avoiding the obviousness of those damn tools besides not using them?
I like using lower opacities of a color then building on it with screen/multiply layers, but that takes awhile. Sometimes too long.
Aw well...dragged on a bit there.
I'll catch back up later on this weekend perhaps.

*edit...I did burn for the shadow...sorry!

here's a little crosshatching experiment i did in english class.
i think it's pretty good.click HERE (http://ice.prohosting.com/kipodm/CoolDragon.JPG)
if the link doesn't work go here (http://ice.prohosting.com/kipodm/Portfolio.htm) and see the bottom of the page
Zeb
May 27th, 2004, 10:14 AM
skid: while this is a good expirement there are several problems with your hatching. first off, it is way to erratic. it also doesn't work the way it should. your image still appears flat. slow down with your lines and make each one individually. also, i tip, instead of using normal cross-hatching, try to work on cross-contour, which is where you follow the forms with your lines. oh, and generally you will wrap the hatching lines around the object anyway to give it more solidity. and try to avoid what you did with the scales on the chest of the dragon.
Sheesh, sorry if it sounds like I'm biting your head off.
I have a little thing you could do, they made us do this back when I was still and art major, draw ten 1x1 inch boxes and make a gradient using cross hatching with your pen. I'll scan mine:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/pengradients.jpg
There, I hope that helps atleast a small bit.

Okay, :(
It's become apparent that this summer I will not have internet access. The main reason for this post is so you won't be wondering, "Well, he said he was going to post..." I apologize -- and I'm also very saddened that I won't be able to update or even view the work on this forum very often.
I hope this thread lives on, though, and am sure that if anyone can keep up with it, it's ZEB.
Good luck all, have a productive summer!

mr.right places a lot of faith in me...considering that I too won't be able to contribute as much as I'd like to over the summer.
I'll need all of your help.
So, try, hard as you may, to supply this thread with plenty of material. I'll try hard as well. And when that runs low, well, I'll just have to dip into the collection to date and start coloring.

Why don't you throw up some pics LXS?
Here's me playing with skid's bird at about 2 AM, it looks alot like skids...sorry, I wasn't feeling very creative:

And here is a pic I did of my friend Pat while I should've been watching my nephew. (but he's six, so no worries!)

Well. Let's go folks. I'm going to try and get atleast three images a week to post, that way this thread doesn't die...mr.right would kill me if I let that happen!!!

I would not kill you, Zeb. You've been doing a great job of keeping this thread alive. I was happy to see more posts! .cfb and Lioness esp.
.cfb;; I like your dark images -- have you considered using heavy blacks in your work?
will;; sorry not to comment earlier, but that's an awesome Cyclops pic (even though he's my least favorite X-man)
zeb;; upon further meandering in photoshop, I've discovered that layering too much makes the images muddy, and like they've been taken to with the burn tool. Blending is a good tool, but try to select the blended color and use it at 100%... hmm, but even then it can still come out muddy... try thinking about the type of light, not just the source and it will help you think about how to get areas darker, because if they are dark enough, you should just go ahead and make them black. Again, this is just me experimenting; let me know if it works for you.
And I encourage everyone to look at killing.people's tutorial theread. Voila! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18980)
Later Days;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

mr. right: I've tried some heavy blacks, mostly with india ink and a thicker brush, but it never turns out too well. This is about as close as I get. Maybe I'll try again.
Anyways, I haven't drawn much recently, because of finals, but eh, here's all I've gotten done today:

While this thread is called "Drawing in Class," it was made quite clear early on that the drawings could have been done "while you were supposed to be doing something else."
For instance, drawing on menus while in resteraunts was found to be acceptable by mr.right early on.
This thread is really meant to be an outlet for all those times you, all the artists reading this, couldn't just not draw. It's for when you were supposed to be engaged in some other, no less important, activity but were stricken with an uncontrollable earge to create. It's to have fun!
Hey Dutch have you checked out killing.people's tutorial thread that mr.right posted? If not, then do so. I learned a few things from it and I'm sure anyone who reads it will. You're definitely showing some progress though. Hell, my main crit wouldn't be with your skill, but rather with your compositions. They are, respectfully of course, boring. A portrait-esqu image, a profile shot, and part of tree with a branch cutting about center? Come on, I know you can come up with more exciting and just as quick compositions.
One of the best things for learning PS isn't just sitting down and coloring out an actual image, but playing with brushes, color, value, texture, lighting, and on and on. An abstract "screwing around" can be more helpful than a rendering of some sketch.
Take that as you will.
.cfb: That link isn't working. It tries to load http:/// and I'm thinking you forgot to add the link? Or maybe CA just screwed it up? Who knows.
Well, back to animating...argh.

mondan: If you say drawing in class is one of your favorite pastimes, why don't you post some of the art then?
Emerald164: Thanks for contributing. One thing though...could you crop out all that negative space in those images so they load quicker and there is less blank page showing? That'd be great if you could.

Hey thanks for taking the time to crit my work
i`ll defenitely keep this in mind when I feel like drawing with photoshop
The problem is
I don`t have a wacom tablet or something so I find it very hard to lay out a nice composition
When i`m working with a mouse I have lots of trouble making a nice composition because I can`t find my "flow" if you know what I mean
I know it sounds stupid....but I dunno how to explain it......and because my motherlanguage isn`t english it`s hard to explain also :D
I will pay more attention to the composition next time
Thnx again :chug:

No Problem...Sorry about that :) I would have done it earlier but...I'm a procrastinator :(
Zeb
June 11th, 2004, 09:55 PM
Dutch I understand COMPLETELY what you say about "flow." In fact, that is the perfect word for it. All things must have a steady, constant, delicate flow in order for a level of composure to exist. The flow of one line to the next. The flow from light to dark or color to color. All must be smooth and clear. There is a deep, and masterful quality to harnessing the "flow" of the instrument and utilizing it to its potential.
A mouse is NOT the best of tools for this. Although, if you slow down and take a bit more time and effort (I'm not speaking at you, just in general) sometimes the outcome can be just as good. Like all things, it just takes patience.
Here, this was my first ever real PS attempt and it was done with a mouse.
http://zebzero.com/images/Fantasy2.jpg
While it is a hodge podge of hacked up layers (which is dreadfully obvious) there is also a "flow" about it. It took about seven and a half hours if I remember correctly.
Now that I've gotten all of that philosophizing out of the way.
I hope you understand what I've been ranting about and don't think I'm just being a pompous windbag (which I can be sometimes!).
Emerald...don't worry to much. Procrastination is very dangerous though. Trust me. It's just like crack, addicting and deadly.
Well folks. I promised three images and I'm not ready to post the third yet. I haven't been able to draw while in the midst of other things because all my other things have required my full attention. I apologize.
Perhaps I'll bring a sketchbook to my nephew's soccer game tomorrow. Perhaps.

Sorry, no new art, but I was going through the thread recording numbers for no apparent reason. These are the people, from most to least posts, that have posted artwork on this thread. I included coloring someone else's pic as an art post because it was how we once decided to keep the thread alive and it is still art. Also, if you linked it instead of posting it visually, I counted it (a lot of Skid's work is posted this way). Enjoy!
1. mr.right - 115 posts not including the three screenshots I posted from my flash animation.
2. zeb - 46 posts - less than half what I did but OVER FIVE TIMES the next closest "poster" child
3. stacy- 9 posts - I'm not kidding; she hold's the "3" spot and we lost her on page 2.
4. shadow & lioness - 8 posts - more people we've seemed to have lost.
6. skid & dementist - 7 posts - keep 'em comin' guys
8. WillSchnevel & .cfb - 6 posts - witty remark here
10. ardjet & Dutch Badass - 5 posts
12. Aerythes, sancho, andres_pad, jamie, f00l, & Emerald164 - 4 posts
18. The Bug - 2 posts - the grid paper man
One hit wonders:
Hunger_Artist, Lord Flathead, brkofdon, dryfire, Little Jackson, threelegged_chicken, & sodomizer.
Hopefully this list will make some people want to climb the ranks...

No new art, but tell me this doesn't suck:

Zeb, I was just curious if you ever sketch out an outline before you jump in, or, y'know, scratch out the forms first. From what it looks like, nobody on this thread is really doing that.
I admit, I usually just get the head and shoulders down before jumping in -- especially when using pen, but if the character or object is going to be doing something crazy, I have to sketch out what it's going to look like. Usually I sketch then draw over it, but sometimes I draw a thumbnail real sketchy and make it nice when I work on the larger version.
Later Days,..........////;;;;;;;;;;;;;
edit: changed my avatar. Didn't think it was right to be a veteran with someone else's art as my avatar.
... except I guess it takes a while to kick in... here are the three I chose from:
http://www.right.demonicpillbug.com/pics/icons/slumber.jpg http://www.right.demonicpillbug.com/pics/icons/spray.jpg http://www.right.demonicpillbug.com/pics/icons/punch.jpg
Zeb
June 17th, 2004, 11:30 AM
mr.right: You should hold on to the other two potential avatars as back up. Can't keep the same one for too long. As for the other question. I generally sketch out a circle for the head lightly and that's it, everything else I just draw (which is painfully obvious in many of my works). If I'm doing a pose I've never done before I do the full stick figure thing to lay out when I want it to bend and such. If the image is something I plan on taking further than a sketch I'll do a few thumbnails first to get an idea of the composition. Perhaps a few in color to see what color does. Mostly though, I just do the circle for the head and draw some lines through it for the hair line, mouth, nose, and eyes.
I did the full stick figure for the Marvelous Bob Pic 2 above, but I erased them out before I scanned it in. The joy of 4H pencils.
Here's an example:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/SameFace.jpg
The first one I did is the top right (with the lines showing) and the rest I could pretty much duplicate and tweak each time. I have a really cool marker sketch of the same face...I seem to be drawing it continuously every time I pick up something you can draw with.
Argh.

Yakuza: Nice pic. A little color would be sweet...
Shamrock: I like it. I like the hand holding the knife more.
Dutch: Try playing with textures. Shading and smoothing you're getting better at, now push it further. The wrinkles in the guys face and his scraggly eye brows would be a good place to strart...I know you had to get back to work so it was cut short...this is for next time.
Ether: It doesn't matter what I was going to say and urging me to do so when I said it wasn't going to be nice, isn't very nice. Besides, I said it in a nicer way below that. Just trying to remind people what they're here for.
YouKillMyself: Fix the eyes so that they look like they are IN the head. Right now they appear to be popping out. Also, the holes on the skull don't appear to be flowing with the curvature of the skull and they flatten it out up there.
In other news, I'm a lazy ass and this is all I've got for you:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Jack.jpg
By the way, I was working from a digital cam photo he sent me. Said "make me in to a pimp..." and I tried. Halfway through it though I noticed that I changed the perspectives on the face...so the nose it wrong and the eyes are off kilter. Speaking of the eyes, they're too big and a bit to anime-ish...argh I wish I could kill that part of me...and the mouth is an abysmal failure.
So, if you decide to crit after that, be just as abusive as I am to myself. No one ever learned anything from having smoke blown up their ass.
And I'm spent.

hand with the knife looking better... I tried and
tried but i couldnt get it to look right with it being that small
well...seeing as how my wacom tablet is at work
i will get to work on it more...also i think the left
arm needs to be bigger.
As far as your drawing goes...I love how you
always draw in pen it takes great confidence
and comfort to do that...and i respect that.
But your guy has no neck...so please give him
one when you get the chance.
ANd one question are we allowed to post progress
on drawings?
Zeb
June 25th, 2004, 12:24 PM
It was agreed to that for summer you could take the concepts you've done here and push them further. Possibly make finished works out of them. By the way, what prog did you draw that in?
So, it you wanted to finish the wolverine pic, then do so.
Yeah, I should've mentioned the neck in my thing...in the photo he doesn't really have one either, but it makes more sense. I hate drawing from photos...they're too flat. The perspective man!!! I killed it. Straight slaughter house mess of perspective on that. Thanks for the response.
Well, I should probably be drawing or something.

Yakuza's work is very good.
I have OC 1.whatever and 3.somthing plus. Did a few things in there. I love the ease and simplicity of the prog.
I have no idea what's going on here! Hmm.

Hey guys thanks for the comments. This is the first time I have participated in an "art" forum. It nice to be around other creative types. I Also love the honesty here. I want to become a better artist all the time and with the kinda crits I have seen and been apart of, I dont know I am just realy diggin the maturity level here. I wish that wasn't so rare.
Keep those sketches comming.

Somebody hates me.
I was kicked off the internet by my apartment complex -- apparently I was infecting the network with a virus that had already been quarantined by my computer. whatever
So when I finally get back online, CA is down. Damn those hackers! I had to go a long time without my forum fix (and I've got some good stuff to post).
HOWEVER, now that CA is back up my hosting is down! All everything I had online, all my art, my website, IT'S ALL GONE AND I DON'T KNOW WHY!
So honestly I don't know when you're going to see some art from me, but I like what ya'll have posted. Youkillmyself, Ether, Shamrock, Dutch, Yakuza = good stuff.
Also, I liked the old CA interface better.

Talk about taking something slick and screwing it.
This is obnoxious...
Anyway, sorry to hear it mr.right...and I was so excited that the man behind the thread would be returning, apparently it was not to be so. Well, you ARE back, just not back in full force. Soon perhaps.
I was cleaning and changing my room around and a stack of notebooks fell out of this pile of old school work I had stashed under my bed. I flip them open and find several things worth scanning. So, here they are, a few (not so new) new images:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Notebook51.jpg
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Notebook52.jpg
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Notebook53.jpg
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Notebook54.jpg
I think these happened during Colloquium of my freshmen year at UD...back when I was still an art major aspiring to be an Illustrator or Graphic Designer. Things have a way of falling through though and now I'm a good ol' English Major with no concentration, no direction, and no motivation to do anything.
Kids, I have an important piece of wisdom to lay down on you: DO NOT GIVE IN TO THE ANIME STYLE! It may seem like fun and a great way to draw, but it'll ruin you forever. The influence is deep in my art and try hard as I can, I can't fully remove it. It's screwed me over so many times. Anime WILL limit your growth as an artist.
I've gone back and told my high school art teacher this and she's promised me to beat it into the heads of her teens. She said she sees so much of it in their work that it makes her sick. I told her to tell them that if they aspire to be artists then giving up the style or changing it drastically is the only way to do so.
I've ranted long enough. You all can feel free to TRY and debate me on this, but keep in mind I won't argue this. It's a done deal and it's how I feel to my core. Those out there that swear by anime, manga, and anything of that genre, well, good luck...you'll need it.
And with that, I'm spent.
Out.

yeah I need to work on hands.
The problem with the arms, well... the first post his left arm is too small and seemingly not in motion. The second post, I think the problem is where the arms and shoulder area connect more so than a problem with the arms themselves.

Here's something I did earlier. For awhile now I've been trying to make an image that depicts just how this one particular female in my life makes me feel. Well, I was sitting and watching a movie with the rents and started sketching. About five minuts into the sketch I realised that I wouldn't be able to do it justice unless I stopped watching the movie...
Keep in mind that it isn't finished. It's far from it actually. Well, enjoy:

Organics are blue. Human is red, and metal is black. I know a human is technically organic, so don't go there. I traced this from my original copy with bic pens.
And here is another quick sketch:
http://www.zebzero.com/images/Half.jpg
I have a fascination with only drawing half of a face. That and I hadn't drawn out any guide lines for a whole face, but rather built this on one piece at a time until it was at such a point that I couldn't really keep going without ruining it.

A yes, time for another reply.
Inukipachuki: Welcome, welcome. Always glad to see some new faces. Sorry to hear about your lack of a scanner. I'm sure most of us have some real horror stories when it comes to that subject...for instance, the first scanner I ever own worked for about three days, then got effed and scanned everything in with a harsh red glare. Funny thing is, the damn thing works just fine one my friend's comp...
...I'm sure you'd like me to say something about your image, that IS why you are here, isn't it?
Here's how to make that image easier to see...first off, add some ink to it to make the outlines darker. Then, when photographing try to not stand in front of the light so we don't see your shadow. Set up the drawing with a decent light source and try out several shots to see which angle gives you the best resolution. Lather, rinse, and repeat.
Oh, and everyone go to www.zebzero.com/ammonites
Script is by Ether and myself. Site design by me. It's up to page four. Art is by Ether.

Convertr the picture to a jpeg, and upload it to a webhost like www.photobucket.com, and get the URL of the image.

I'm pretty sure that a new one of these threads will be started within the next couple of weeks. Just to make a fresh start for everyone and to get back to the real reason we're all here, DRAWING IN CLASS (or work...hehe).
Sorry to've been MIA for so long. To much to do, and to little time.
Of course, this thread was supposed to die awhile back. Which is why you haven't seen anything from mr.right in awhile.
Aw well, keep an eye out of Drawing in Class II and keep drawing you crazy kids.
BTW, Mr Frost, you are now king of the pen work. That is amazing.

First off, Ether, those gestures of the people are VERY good. I like them a lot, keep working like that.
NOTICE: Drawing in Class II will be appearing shortly, and will not carry over ANY images from this thread. So anything you were doing here HAS to STAY here.
So, for those with the wolverine pics and the other misc. stuff, it stays here.
This is a clean slate for everyone, so I'm hoping that more people will get down on it. Classes are starting this week, some have started already, and I know that there are many many people that are apart of this forum that just can't sit through a class and NOT draw. This is what we're here for, to see the drawings you produce when you're supposed to be learning about something.
Wait for the new thread to appear for more information.
And uh, feel free to continue this one as long as you'd like.
Just to let you know though, I'd appreciate it if it started to die.
Out.

Our professors and instructors incourage us to doodle. I had my history teacher ask how many of us in class were doodling while he was giving his lecture, and almost everyone in the class raised their hands. He had no problem and went on saying, "I doodle even when I'm lecturing, I gotta do something to keep my hands busy so I don't seem like I'm figiting." I thought that was pretty cool, then I went back to my drawing. I'll post some sketches from today's class, right now I'm trying to get out of my GD class so I can get to work on some 3D.
