I just started my first class in sculpture, and .. Wow, Its as difficult as I thought.

My first project was to make a massive or um.. Well honestly I didn't understand the first project, but it was suppose to be a mass that we could make molds out of easily. We started in clay, then to the plaster, then to the wax, then to the bronze. IT was good fun, though honestly I didn't really get anything good. This is what came out.

(Sorry bout the mess around it, I didnt take the photos :P)

Its nicknamed frogdog... Yup.. I know Im odd.. :P

This is my second project so far. Its direct wax. So we work from sheets of wax. I usually just use water and a butter knife, I don't really know what other tools are good with the wax.

I also think I will be adding more of the details when I get these into the bronze. The wax keeps melting on me, so anything I do add, usually ends up pretty messed up by the end of the day.

I hope to have the second Ninja floating more, just connected to the base ninja. I gotta see how that will work tomrrow when we sprue and vent them.

Any tips to making this process easier, or just making things look better? Also I could use help on making a base, Im not sure what I will be using for that.

Also does it seem like I have any hope in this? haha

Well ,for your 2nd piece I`d say your off to a REALLY good start! I really like the movement in the Ninja piece. Just keep studying anatomy.Sculpting or any artform is a lifelong learning process.ENJOY!
I really want to try bronze myself at some point, any tips on beginning?

Thanks :D Oh Im glad you said that, since that was our goal in the second one is movement, and using lines and planes..

We use a glassblowing studio to pour the bronze into our molds, so if you have access to the tools and whatnot that helps. Im sorry I don't know very much about it, other than what we did in class. Though if you can ever do it, its quite the experience.

If your interested Im sure I could get some photos of our sand investment day thurs and bronze pour the next time. ^^

Yeah, the ninjas are just great! The headbands really help to add movement to them and accentuate the poses.

I want to do bronze evetually too. My school has the facilities... but I'm graduating in may. D'oh! I can't wait to see more from you!

These are my ninjas as they came out after the pour. Now I get to cut off all the extra vents and whatnot and clean things up. I sooo hope that the one floating one will be able to stand on its own.

that’s interesting your using the red sand thingy (not sure what it is) when we do our molds we use plaster/sand. (investment mold).

I found sculpting in wax to be a complete pain in the ass and generally screws up most of my detail. The stuff I use now is Alginate, the same stuff the dentist use to cast a mold of your teeth. (works well in some sculptures but not in all) from that point I just poor the hot wax in and walha instant wax figure.
