View Full Version : My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic

ok, i just had to make a thread about this, because
THIS. SHOW. FUCKING. ROCKS!
1225244

i know what you're all thinking right now...
1225250
...but hear me out for a moment.
1225248

it is really well written and superbly animated, with very entertaining storylines, almost "classic" jokes and greatly fleshed out characters.

1225247

of course, as time goes by and you have accepted all of these things, they become slightly irrelevant next to the fact that it's just GOSH-DARN-CUTE PONIES.
it's like a sugar rush.
1225245

and last, but not least, thanks to the internet and perfectly timed still-frames, it has become MEMETASTIC.
1225246

so i implore you to give this series a chance, watch two or three episodes (youtube) and to consider for yourselves whether you have place in your heart for a series that shines with 90s-style goodness and gives hope for future generations of tv animation.

all of you who already watch and love this series (bronies?), feel free to post pictures, videos and just generally discuss what is an awesome show.

p.s.: it was written/created by the same guys as "powerpuffgirls" and "foster's home for imaginary friends".

YES.

I think this is a great idea. We need to have a staging point to spread the Bronyism for this terrific show! I think it'd also be a cool idea to share the story of our first introduction to MLP as we go.

So I'll start.

I was in sketch Group with a few of my other artist friends and one of them asked me if I watched it. My reaction was expected as reveling in surprise and a little bit of 'What? Pffft. Why would you watch a show for little girls?'
I ignored all the requests for three weeks until finally I said 'FIIINNEEE. Link me to a good episode.'

I was linked to this:

GesUqna5H64

And there were two things that blew my mind.
The first was how they accurately portrayed the artist (Rarity) and her relationship with Clients (Don't want to spoil it, watch the video =D) And the second was how surprising it was that it didn't patronize the audience at all with hastily written dialogue. I watched every single episode in a night (At the time there were 16 available.) I've proudly been a Brony ever since!

And other brilliant things I noticed was how Rarity's musical number was a tribute to this song:

-836TtoF_5I

And that half of the plot of one of the episodes was a direct reference to Icarus's plight.

A huge shout out to Lauren Faust by enriching my whole childhood with lots of good animated shows.

i've come to the conclusion that rarity probably is my favourite pony. i mean, i can't really pick a favourite, but everytime rarity has time to shine (lol), it just makes me smile widely. best example, the whining part.
here's another example of her at her best. i LOVE it when she's melodramatic :D
gyQIO0LcsJs

funnily enough, i did get introduced to mlp through this forum here. i can't remember who, but somepony posted flutterguy's song in the cheer me up thread, and a week later or so i decided to check out the series on my own. at first i was confused too why i like this, but by now i've come to accept what i feel and am trying to convert my friends to watch it :D

oh yeah, and here's an example of what i mean by "classic" humour. :D
i mean, door chase scenes? how long is it since i've last seen that used? :D

edit:
this one's slightly spoilerish since it's from the newest episode, but it showcases just how well this is made. even danny elfman would be proud of this background music.
(also, possibly referencing ren and stimpy with those painted backgrounds?)

Exactly. I can't REALLY pick a favorite because they're all done so well, but if I had to it would be a toss up between Rarity (For the way She portrays our archetype and her and hilarious solutions to sticky situations, plus She was my introduction to MLP) And Pinkie pie (Because Gosh darn it, I've always had a thing for Hyperactivity.)

She hasn't really gotten her due screen time until Episode 25, but 25 was SOO WORTH IT ^^

yeah, i wouldn't have thought it (she's my least favourite pony tbh), but that episode might just be my favourite up to date. heh, "normal" angry pinkie pie scares me more than cracked pinkie pie though :D

Is this related to the old-school My Little Pony? Cuz I loved it... I felt strange, because I was a guy (I'm still a guy :P) and it felt so girly, but I loved it! If it's something like a sequel series, then I'll give it a try xD

I keep seeing this everywhere, so I guess I will have to give it a try. Might also be the motivation I need to tackle that biiiig box of 80s MLP toys I haven't found the right display space for. (Well, other than all over my husband's studio space.)

I am of mixed feelings. I've seen people praise this a lot, and I loved the original show back as a kid, but.... I just can't get over my disgust of those thinderella pony designs. I guess it's because I really loved the original toys/show, but when Hasbro decided the old ponies were apparently uncool and too fat, they redesigned the ponies to be thinner and added diamonds to their eyes (Generation 2) which practically destroyed my pony-childhood in the late 90's. I think I bought one to exhibit some sort of sportsmanship but I couldn't muster any liking to that toy, though I displayed the old 80's toys openly for who knows how long.

But then again that one episode was okay, but the designs, but it seems to be one of the better cartoons of these days, but the designsnnnggghhhmmmaybe I watch couple episodes and reach some sort of dislike/okay equilibrium and get some sort of mental closure on these ponies.

more like a complete revamp :) and less girly, despite first appearances.
it's kind of like "robot unicorn attack" in that aspect: it should be the girliest shit ever, but it's just plain awesome.

The best thing about MLP:FiM is that it doesn't pretend to be anything. It just is. It makes no attempt to be pretentious, it doesn't try to take itself seriously. Just simple storytelling in its purest form.

"YOU'RE... GOING TO... LOVE ME!"

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm beginning to like this show. It's so well-timed and the jokes have universal appeal. The characters are well defined in personality that I can actually forgive the look of things. It surprised me as much as when I first saw Powerpuff Girls; deceiving designs hiding brilliant execution for what they're given (I mean, seriously, who knew one could do so much with girly ponies?). At times, I wouldn't even have known it was written for their target audience if it wasn't for the look of things (and maybe their song sequences...). This is one of the few recent cartoons that can actually make my cold soul laugh.

I think I'm going to look for more episodes now...

and
From Equestra Daily's comments:

"Looks like one of the staff members of the show just dropped a few words on the Allspark forums, in response to both Lauren's and Kreoss's posts."

Nayuki:
"I've known about this for a while now, was wondering when the news would finally break. Now before people go all gloom and doom, I'd like to point out that she is still doing a lot of what she did in season 1. She's still heavily involved in the pre-production of season 2 (story and scripts), she'll just be less involved in the post-production. This really won't have any impact on the production.

To clarify what Kreoss was talking about in his blog, no 7 episodes are not complete, he's talking about watching animatics, essentially storyboards with the recorded dialogue from the voice actors. Layout starts later this month, and animation starts next month, so it'll be a while yet before the season 2 episodes are ready. I've actually seen more of the animatics than he has at this point, and season 2 is shaping up to be AMAZING."

Still... even if Season 2 is Half-Faust, Season 3 will be Faustless, unless Circumstances un-change.

See, this is why I promised myself to never invest too much love into someone else's work. Something changes and it ends up shattering you. That's what happened with House; Seasons 1 and 2 were brilliant with the focus on medicine, the puzzle and the tangential learning of medicine... Whereas season 3 onwards had all the lead characters bitching and moaning about their personal lives whilst intermittently pausing the soap opera to remember that they had a patient that was spewing blood all over the floor.

Again, here's hoping that Lauren Faust pulls a Peter Jackson and weaves her way back into the top spot <3

I kind of expected this to happen. The show is far too different from what is considered a show for young girls. It garnered attention (from the least expected audience) for the reasons Hasbro probably did not want, and the ultimate goal is probably to sell the toys to girls. The show outshone the point of it, and now Hasbro's most likely going to take it down a notch. In the worst case scenario, this might end up like Winx Club by season 3 *shivers* but hopefully the remaining team can continue doing a great job without being controlled too much by the toy company.

EDIT: Stuff like: JHy3ZhY9VKs

Brilliantly characterized and timed, almost fucked up, but when your toys look like

http://www.frugalcouponliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/my-little-pony.jpg

I can see why Hasbro might raise a brow lol.

WHEN WILL SEASON 2 COME OUT DAMNIT.

Beeston
May 8th, 2011, 01:00 PM
I think the biggest irony for Hasbro is, Lauren Faust took their product which was aimed at materialistic little girls who wanted toys to play with, and made it something compelling, intelligent, deep and well written with good humor, and it became popular amongst adult people . And I wasn't the least bit persuaded to actually buy their toys.

As Faust is a feminist I'd hate to see her reaction to that statement.. Her design philosophy has always been to create shows for girls that weren't patronizing or the same stupid princess plot each time. And Powerpuff girls appealed to me in my childhood as well. It's nice to find something that's deep and well written that didn't have a lot of darkness to it. And there's something about a well written kids show that really stands apart from a lot of Adult's television these days, probably because it's lack of 'Mature' themes. I haven't really felt this way about a television series since Avatar: The last Airbender.

EDIT: Or Toy story 3. PERFECT example. I was completely convinced that they were to die in that fire.... *sheepish*

How do you know you're the only demographic that is interested in it? I know at least adult women for sure. I don't know how many kids, but when I was young, anything having to do with horses was a guaranteed win with every girl I knew. ;)

"Patronizing" is the key word, and not just to cartoons aimed at young girls.

I think most cartoon writers nowadays need to stop treating any of their young audiences as morons, female or male. It's ruining potentially good concepts in favour of what they THINK will sell, and it gets to the point that even their target audience can see through that.

MLP isn't exactly missing the audience either. On every episode on Youtube, one of the most viewed audience will always have Female 13-17 on it. Maybe it's not selling the toys as much as it could (thank god), but it's exactly what Faust wanted and then some. I don't think girls are necessarily going to cry in a corner seeing Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy slowly descend into madness; it's just funny!

I don't REALLY know for certain, but I don't think saying it became popular amongst adult men excludes it being popular with anyone else either =)

I just mis-constructed my sentence, that's all.

So I suppose I should have said 'I think it became more popular amongst adult males than they expected it to, who wouldn't be as inclined to buy the product as Hasbro would like.'

I have yet to learn the language of 'Covering my ass' :P

i just hope they'll update us with inside info every now and then on whether it is or isn't going to be good (i.e. animators posting whether they're happy or frustrated with how it's turning out, no real details), so we don't descent into hysteria and speculation where we don't need it.

(posts taken from ponychan.net)
"Aside from the fact that she wasn't fired.

Jesus Jackhammering Christ, chances are as she got further along in season 1 she realized that she was slowly losing creative control to the writers and artists (who she thanks), since an episodic structure (the one point of executive meddling that might have caused this.)

Face it, she wanted episodes 1&2 to be the template, and instead got Tales from Ponyville, not that there wasn't continuity (hell Best Night Ever was practically continuity porn.)

notice she says Personal creative involvment and creative control.

Creative involvement went out the window when she had to defer to the various writers and artists, and probably became impersonal when she had to be the boss and worry about things like, how close are we to the deadline over, this isn't quite right, redo it. As for Creative control, she had less once it got past episode 3 when writers took over, and once again had to make it impersonal when she had to say things like, "I'm going to have to cut out these lines, and this joke."

tl;dr Not the end of the world or the end of the franchise as we like it."

@damascus57: Ha, I wasn't going by just that sentence alone. It seemed to me you were saying, "The company is demoting this creator I like because it ended up targeting the male demographic who don't buy pony toys." Thus saying it must not be popular with the intended demo, or those who buy the product.

I could also say I know a lot of adults who buy plenty of toys. ;) It wasn't a srs bznz comment from me though. Just teasing you. ;)

Hasbro IS in the market of toys, but as has been proven with other companies who get into the entertainment biz, that is not all they make money from. A popular toon is still going to make good money, even without the bonus of merchandise.

I fell in love with the show in the first two episodes, it had continuity! Which is rare with cartoons now a days. I was a big disappointed when the third episode didnt continue from the first two..but only for a brief moment. Ive been watching ever since day one, and Im thankful for such a lovely fun show.

I love the flying animation, and the detail to making the wings on the pegasi look like WINGS. There was continuity through the season, small little things...and the last episode of the season had the dresses that Rarity made! I was :D :D :D .

I am looking forward to the Season 2, mostly because Luna will make a return! I am hoping it doesnt turn girly girl..which is what I am afraid of.

Just so I know, I'm not judging, but is the love for this show real and genuine or is there a sense or irony here? Or is this show like the Spongebob? Something parents can watch with their kids and take some enjoyment from it too?

Carnifex

it is genuine, and parents can get enjoyment out of it too. it can't really be summarized, so it's best to just watch and judge for yourself.
i'd say it's better than spongebob though ;)

They're both good in a different way.

The legitimate reason is that it's actually a very well made cartoon. It's like a 90s cartoon renewed two decades later and it doesn't take itself very seriously.

I was telling my husband about how I was going to watch this since there were some dudes on CA that liked it. He made the Obama face posted above, lol. THEN I told him it was by the same creator of Powerpuff Girls.

He said, "Oh! Then it's probably good and I'd watch it."

I never watched PPG because I thought it was "girlie" but he LOVED it. So there you go, shrunkendesigner. Sometimes "girlie" just means "good" and you don't need to worry about your masculinity to enjoy it. ;) I mean, my hubs fav cartoon ever is Kim Possible. Though less "girlie" it was definitely not targeted to boys/men. ;)

Oh yeah. I didn't know it was made by the creator of powerpuff girls until I noticed the the personality archetypes of all the ponies were so similar to the three PPG's... And I loved that too :P

And yeah, Samurai Jack is awesome too, but in a different way.

Lol, I never worry about my masculinity, especially since I watch Glee by choice, (much to the dismay of my girlfriend) the most manly show around. I've never watched the Power Puff Girls, but I remember seeing clip of it and thinking it looked mental. I think the pace of modern cartoons is so different now than what it was when I was younger in the 90's. I'm so old... but damn it I am manly.

I prefer really crude and politically incorrect shows like South Park and Family Guy and, of course, The Happy Tree Friends but, I will have a look as I'm not adverse to trying new things.

Okay, I watched the first episode of it and I'm sorry guys, its not for me... I see why kids love it and the nuances that attract the grown ups (like the Granny Smith Pony) though and don't judge anyone above the target age for watching and enjoying it. I did think the musical score is pretty good though but that isn't enough to rope me in.

I'll go back to my big boy cartoons and Harry Potter...

the thing is, the first episode is quite different in tone from the rest of them. you shouldn't necessarily judge by that one, sadly.

Oh my, you should NEVER judge a show by it's pilot because in some cases, such as emmy winning Rugrats, The pilot episode involving Tommy and the toilet is so radically different from episodes coming afterward, you could swear the animation teams were on other sides of the world.

Also, The Simpsons. Jesus Christ look at how far THEY have come. From those scary monsters from the shorts to the Post movie episodes.

I've watched My Little Pony FIM On Demand and I've. Fallen. In. Love. <333

The expressions and pastel colors tickle the little girl in me and the
humour isn't as corny as most kiddie shows that have lessons.

Example: An episode where the lesson involved to not judge someone by the way they look.

Fluttershy, got a deep Barry White Voice.

Hilarity.

Welcome... to the real world... ;)

Anyway, I saw the latter post in the Cheer Me up thread Droid, but I figured that this would be a better place for it.

I so happen to be working on a re-dub of the Battle of the Pelennor fields; I title it the battle of the Appaloosa fields ;) It's only 3/4 complete and I can't seem to find enough footage to complete it without replaying already used shots backwards or flipped. I'm not really happy with most of what I've already done and as I said I'm scratching to use shots in a creative way that I haven't already used 3 or four times, flipped or played backwards. If someone else wouldn't mind seeing it and giving feedback, that'd be great.. I've got gigs upon gigs worth of data in a file, so even though I'd love to do a collaboration, I doubt it's practical.

It's not that odd. It's a well-written show that can appeal to anybody. And it doesn't suffer from trying to appeal to an audience of young girls simply by making everything pink and cute.

Justin Beiber on the other hand is cheaply written music that does try to appeal to an audience of young girls by being cute and singing sappy songs.

OMG, Rarity is unlikable? Sorry, but no way. She may be vain but she's always handled as an artist and a businesswoman, not a vapid fashion victim. She doesn't wear what society says is cool, she makes her own clothes according to her own ideas and markets them, running a one-mare-show very successfully.

Maybe she's a bit shallow and silly at times, but all of the characters have flaws. (If Rarity is in any way unlikable, I declare Rainbow Dash to be unlikable for her jock-ness and self-centredness, but those are just parts of her that make her who she is.)

She may be vain but she's always handled as an artist and a businesswoman,

In which episode? "Look Before You Sleep" and "Sonic Rainboom" (the only episodes I saw that had her important to the plot) showed her as a self centered pretentious snob who likes having arbitrary rationales to look down on others and wants to be the center of attention.

I GUESS "Suited for Success" is about the artist and businesswoman angle you're talking about, but I only gave the episode a minute or two. I felt no urge to continue because I already gave the series 2 hours of my time, and I concluded that it wasn't something I liked enough to watch anymore.

not a vapid fashion victim.

When on earth did I say that? Are you talking to someone else?

Maybe she's a bit shallow and silly at times

That's not a maybe. That's all I ever saw from the character.

If Rarity is in any way unlikable, I declare Rainbow Dash to be unlikable for her jock-ness and self-centredness, but those are just parts of her that make her who she is.

Rainbow Dash certainly isn't self centered, given what I saw in "Griffon the Brush-Off". What's "jock-ness?"

...Mind you, but even is she is handled as an artist and businesswoman, it doesn't automatically mean she'd be likeable to everyone. And then you basically go on to saying that if you find one character unlikeable (of reasons that Psychotime didn't even say as far as I know) then you should find the other ones too? Personal likes and dislikes do affect a lot here (I'm sure everyone here has at least one character [of any series] that they dislike that others like), so...

I didn't intend so say it like that, sorry if it came across as such. I was trying to point out why I personally think Rarity is not unrelatable at all because usually her role would be the chick whose tastes are determined by society and who's totally vain, which is not how she is treated at all. So she may be a lot of things but I don't find her unapproachable at all.

Besides, I never said I didn't like Rainbow Dash. I say that there are things one could easily dislike about her but they are part of her character and flaws that are balanced by her good traits.

Sorry that it came out badly, I've had very little sleep and food for the past two weeks, my brain was kind of muddled typing it.

Yeah, I didn't assume you personally didn't like Rainbow Dash, but even still, personal likes and dislikes tend to play such a huge part with what character you like or dislike that things like that don't necessarily affect the personal opinion. I like some characters that are unbalanced and flat, and I like some characters that are well written and balanced and all between, and though I can say "X is a really flat character with no redeeming qualities" I can still like them because there's just something that I like, even if they really aren't well written as characters.

Like you personally said, you personally find Rarity likeable and can relate to her and I'm sure so will many others, but not everyone will.

Don't know if it has been posted here before or not, but I stumbled onto this Blog post of the old (I think) "My Little Pony" toys, where people have taken it upon themselves to customise them. For instance, there is a Boba Fett Pony and a Pony Encased in Carbonite. My personal fav is the Xenomorph pony.

I thought I'd share the link with you MLP lovers because I thought you might get a kick out of it: http://www.buzzfeed.com/rebeccae/my-little-pony-for-geeks
