hey nice idea to add a new whole new sub-forum for this. ^-^

well, i'm in. i'll be able to saty at my dads house. the coach trip will be the only thing that will cost a lot, but it should be fine.

i was wondering if my brother could come too? i didnt really want him to come, but he sulked for an hour so i decided to ask! i felt guilty ^-^
he's 15. he just joined here as Meta, he'll be posting later maybe.

anyway, i hope its not a problem. if we go to any bars, will i be able to be his guardian or something?

anyway, i cant wait for this. discs79, lol we dont need to see your portfolio for you to join, artists of all levels can join ^-^, nice work though :)

Hi all!

30th(after 6:30), the 1st all good for me. I dont have the friday off. Im very keen to meet you guys.

One other thing.... where? Nat history museum is great for sketching creatures, etc... science museum for technical stuff... coffee shop for... well, coffee and talking shite. And sketching between espresso's. (too many and the only thing ya can draw is trees...)

anyways, what do you all think? I can submit a vote if we cant make up our minds... which is inevitable.

Hello guys/gals

Sketchling - If you wanna meet Friday after 6.30, I'll meet up wit ya? A poll sounds good too...

1st of May is a Saturday. We could all meet out side either:
British Museum - near Tottenham court road, (plenty of cafes, bars'n'pubs) The John Soane Museum; also a little walk to the Nat Portrait Museum, Trafalgar Sq etc
Nat History Museum - close to the V&A & the Science Museum

I'd suggest we keep our first meeting simple, bring sketchbooks to show while introducing ourselves. Then go and do at least 1-2 hrs work??? In a museum??? Meet back up then go for a bite, drink???

What do you all think?
PLEASE state what your keen on doing....??? Discs? Schlo-mo? Cartoonfox? Dirty_C? Tomoscopic? Kim-L? Lowpolymatt? Makafui?

Mollyx

i'll Pm a few others...

April 22nd, 2004, 01:12 PM
Yo!

Mollyx : Im keen for fri night coffee or something. Im working in soho, on wardour street, livin in southfields/wimbledon, so anywhere between the two is the best for me, but can gladly travel otherwise. Can maybe think up some idea's for the next day or whatever (like a daily-sketch type thing). I carry my sketchbook with me as standard, so drawings always an option :) .

As for where... its all good. British museum has a very wide variety of ancient stuff which is gorgeous to draw. Id vote that way. Its close to the national gallery too, but I doubt we will have time for more than just the B-museum... its HUGE.

I recon we could just go and sketch, or we could have a concept-idea we need to research. like Ancient starship, or something more origional... or a choice of a few. One tends to do more when you have something to go on though...

anyways, lookin forward to it!
Cheers

Well, the austin group is meeting weekly. That's a bit much for an area this size, but what about if we tried to nominate a weekend every month? I'm finding myself getting a bit un-motivated just now, and i know come the austin con ,we're all gonna be jealous as hell!

Too much? Attendance not mandatory, of course, but if we make it a regular thing, we can always just confirm whether we're making it or not..

its the thing I mentioned earlier in the forum.. with like a theme... like a daily sketch 'two words' thing where we have a goal in mind. eg an alien portrait and go to the national portrait gallery... Get idea's from there and do a concept sketch using influences from images in the gallery.

MAybe im just thinking too much, but a theme tends to allow ppl to tether their brains to something and then let the creativity run wild.

This is going to be cool :) Even if tiny, its all good!
K

Molly
April 26th, 2004, 09:34 AM
- nah Sketchling you aint thinking too much - thats a cool idea!!!

We've got the National Portrait and British Museum round the corner from each other, so there's nuff influence there to work on.

About your alien idea - we should try it!? How about fantasy creature too??? (duh, same thing?) Do some sketching ourselves throughout the day, at prefered museum, then taken what we've all done, find a nice bar/pub sit down and let our imaginations go wild????

About MSN messenger - I'm at work, and they frown like grumpy bastards upon all that - BUT! I shall endeavour to put it on my machine anyhoo... now, where'd you get yours from/ where can I download... blah blah blah

Dunno who's going to get a chance to read this before tommorrow, but here are a few idea's for a few theme's

1) A creature portrait in a classical style... like if vermeer were commissioned to paint 'alien', or Rembrant to paint ET...

2) An Art gallery of the future. In this future, Many alien races mingle and interact. This gallery is all about appreciating the diverse kinds of art found amongst different species and planets. (and the kind of spaces one would use to exhibit them)

3) The transport museum... in 3000 years.

Well. Just some idea's. Will hopefully see a few of ya tommorrow... if ya come late and we have actually found eachother and gone somewhere, then my number is a couple a posts up.
Tomollo then

Hehe don't worry too much, it wasn't a complete loss that you weren't all with us. It turned out to be the most rabid organisers amongst us hashing out exactly what we wanted to do, at length in the Princess Louise tavern :D

The first thing we learnt is that the galleries maybe aren't the best idea. On the weekend, many of them are booked solid, and you tend to wait about two hours to see any shows. So we've decided that the focus of the next one will most likely be the Natural History Museum. For those with an inclination to draw dinosaurs, it's your dream holiday, and there's plenty of other interesting forms and whatnot there too. Makes me think of what Android said in Amsterdam - every book about "artists' anatomy" you read is by an artist, and in some way tainted by their opinion: It's better to read a book which is actually about anatomy and take away only the facts.

Sketchling (Kim)'s ideas got us going alot, and we decided that we're setting an assignment. Kim's ideas are really solid, and exactly what we need for developing skills and imagination, so before the next meet, which henceforth will be the FIRST WEEKEND OF EVERY MONTH, everyone planning to attend will have to produce a Rennaissance Alien. Aliens are maybe a little easy - there's loads of reference we all know and love. But the Rennaissance is a way to draw from artists maybe we don't look at enough - not just their anatomy, but the style of their colours and brushstrokes, yadda yadda. Plus it's an awesome way to turn usual thinking on its head. So get cracking. Maybe we can say final posting should be the Wednesday before the next meet.

Sketchling's got the pics of our beer-and-sarnie conference, so I hope he posts them soon. And I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with.

hey, you forgot next weeks lottery numbers. ah well, no worries ^-^

sounds like you had fun. i really wish i came, to meet all you guys, but next month i will go for sure. first weekend of every month, sounds great. should become a healthy regular.
so, what we have to do is draw an alien head in the style of an old master? or am i missing something.

hmmm, so did you meet again today? if not, why not? when i go, its gonna cost alot to come from cardiff (coach is loads, train is even more i think) so it would be a bit of a dent in my pocket if i only came for one day.

well sketchling, post those damn photos man. ^-^

You know I've been thinking....

Why dont we do a kind of ' uk (or London) weekly sketch group' thing.... we pick a subject...agree on it and do some artwork based on the theme. I'd love to do a daily but I wouldn't get time to....but a weekly one would be cool..

It might be a really good way for us all to work on similar themes plus it would be a great talking point for any meets we go to.

Thoughts?

sketchling
May 4th, 2004, 08:28 AM
Lowpoly - Yeah, funnily enough we discussed that at the meeting. Im very keen for that and would be willing to help come up with idea's for the topics. I also just dont have the time for the Daily thing all the time.

Weekly things would get us motivated and give us something to show on the monthly meetings over and above the project we set for that.

I vote YAY :)

sketchling
May 5th, 2004, 07:29 AM
Wednesday it is then. So we set a task on a wednesday... and display the previous one at the same time? I assume so. Can do WIP along the way anyways.

Another point : Are we going to mix between character/creature/environments? some people tend towards one or the other, but its a good idea to try different things.. What ya all think?

We could nominate a few people to take it in turns to set the next weeks project... that way character lovers can set characters... etc. that way we can tend towards what we like and still have challenges every week...
(especially if you try to stick with one genre and have to turn something like 'Environment : Ancient Spaceport ' into a character...It could lead to interesting results.)

sketchling
May 5th, 2004, 10:29 AM
Hi all

Mollyx and I were chatting and descided that Weekly Brief's should take the form of 2-3 words, to leave things open ended. DSG style... EG 'Dwarven Astronaught', 'Derelect Planet-Factory' , 'Rusty Steel Garden'... um 'Elven Lumberjack'

So for this week.. as im posting this, lets make the topic one of the above! :D

Molly
May 5th, 2004, 12:19 PM
"Dwarven Astronaut" My choice for subject...

"We could nominate a few people to take it in turns to set the next weeks project... that way character lovers can set characters... etc. that way we can tend towards what we like and still have challenges every week...
(especially if you try to stick with one genre and have to turn something like 'Environment : Ancient Spaceport ' into a character...It could lead to interesting results.)"

he he... Actually I was sayin for this week that we can choose any... so each can choose their own from the list... if ya think we should all do the same thing, then its Dwarven flyboy, cause you chose first. :jump1:

I can put the derelect planet-factory in the background of the dwarven astronaut after all... hmmm... I sence a plan comin together...:D

Dirty C

lowpolymatt
May 5th, 2004, 02:50 PM
So are we all doing dwarven astronaut then? Or any one of the four?

Dirty C
May 5th, 2004, 02:54 PM
Just rock any one of them, I think. Ok, another question, you lot. I'm gonna get me an Intuos 'real wacom' in the words of mr manley :) Do you reckon it's worth getting the A4 oversize rather than the A4? I travel alot, so it's a matter of how much easier one is to carry than the other. I reckon the extra space would be awesome, but I dunno if it's worth the extra hassle.

I'm torn between my constant problems with hefting stuff between two houses and the fact that if I don't buy the one i really want, I'm always pissed off in the end. Watcha think??

sketchling
May 6th, 2004, 04:58 AM
Yo!
Im doing a dwarven astronaut salvaging scrap from a metal garden on a 'planet-factory'
... with a big ass EL-V3N 'lumberjack' arc-welder...
THERES ALWAYS A WAY!!!

Dirty-c -
Id just go for the a4... remember that the screen aspect ratio is rectangular and the oversize wacom is square... so if you want to have an identical up-down, left right movement between hand and screen... you wont use some of your tablet area anyways... I am very happy with my A5 at home, though an a4 would rock... got one at work, and it rocks.

I may be wrong about this, as I assume the A4 oversize is the squareish one... Anyways, whatever you do, you CANT go wrong with a WACOM!!!

i hear a lot of people on conceptart mentioning a site called photobucket that allows you to upload and remote link to pictures (unlike sites like geocities etc)

"Photobucket currently allows 100 megs of disk space ( ~2000 pictures ) and 2,500 megs of bandwidth ( ~50,000 hits )"

Thats seems like plenty and it FREE, otherwise start saving your pocket money for your own website

that should put IMG tags around it and make it appear in your post

Summer Pud - Yeah I'm back at the ole EA....I used to work for em when they were Bullfrog...and now I'm back again...

I'll let you take a guess as to what I've been working on ;)

Lowpoly :

Very cool idea for a planet-factory :trippy: Only thing id say is that it'd be effective to have a subtle bit of blue/purple colour in the shadows to compliment all the orange/yellow to add interest and contrast... in a similar way to how your sun and planet have bits of subtle differing hue's of orange that bring them out. Especially the sun... you can nearly feel the heat from it! Lovely sence of light with the volumetric 'rays' too.

Thats me 2 cents worth :)
Its really wicked!

Well... I have little ground to stand on cause like a fool I left the cd with my contribution to the week on the floor of my room... so no uploads for me today :( Baka!

And suggestions for new theme's? Ill come up with a few later if nobody suggests anything. I like coming up with wierd ideas... :)

lowpolymatt
May 12th, 2004, 05:45 AM
Thanks for the crit Sketchling. I tried a few varying colour themes for a bit of differentiation between the bright and dark sides....a bluey green looked good. I'll have a play and re-post them so you can all see what I mean.

As for themes...

Wel, I've been looking at labels on products and thought a cool subject could be :

'Handle with care' or 'Keep away from children' or 'Always wear protective clothing' or 'Fragile' would be a good theme...OR alternatively...just take a product with a warning label, then make a pic based on the warning label?

What do you all think? It's a little less structured and open enough that you could make anything from it...

Thoughts?

sketchling
May 12th, 2004, 07:26 AM
:) Like that.

Id say you should use 'Warning : keep away from children' ... there are so many ways one can turn that into an interesting image... :) Mind gets to thinkin... hmmm.

This is me image... I went a bit experimental with emphasis on the 'mental' part with this one. Tried to go for a 'steel' gardenish feel with the wire-vines, a planet nearby for a planet-factory on which the two dwarves stand... using a 'ELV-3N 'lumberjack' salvage power-torch...thing. A bit flimsy, but next time I do only one... 4 briefs in one image is a mind-screw!

Took a bit of influence from Craig Mullins - LINK (http://www.goodbrush.com)

anyways, here it is :

I learned a lot doing it... though I dont like the image itself that much. NEXT!

lowpolymatt - Is Ross Dearsley still at Cherstey?

lowpolymatt
May 13th, 2004, 05:46 AM
Sketchling - I really like it. Looks like a lot of effort went into making all 4 ideas gel into 1 image. The rusty vinework is the part which seems to sing to me though. There's some reall nice sketchy work in there.

Nice one!

Matt Dixon- Yeah Ross is still here! Ya know him then? ..I'm sure I know your name from somewhere....Matt Dixon...Matt Dixon....it's evading me...but I know you from somewhere!!!

(You can't hide!!!)

Matt Dixon
May 13th, 2004, 06:11 AM
lowpolymatt - I doubt Ross remembers me, but I admire his work very much indeed. Give him a big kissy from me if the opportunity arises. I met him a few times while working on XBox and GC skus of HP and the COS, which might explain why you've heard my name - was it accompanied by vigorous swearing, by any chance..? ;)

lowpolymatt
May 13th, 2004, 06:15 AM

At the moment it looks like the nat hist museum...or at least thats what Mollyx and I have come up with so far. Very good for characters etc. I think that we should do several studies of stuff we find there and then try and come up with several characters/creatures based on the reference we gather during the day... Then, at the end of the day, we can look at them and crit/comment etc.

We would then have the month to develop one of them (or more) into a final piece.

This is very much open to suggestion, but I think its a good idea. Im going to check out the museum this weekend to look for things we could do and draw.

Ooohh... check this out : LINK (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/fbeasts/index.html?src=hp_ad)

Sketchling - cool image, and the textures are great but I must admit, it's a bit confusing on the eye. Maybe some bigger bits of steel in the foreground to lead the eye towards the focal areas a bit better would have helped things along. I can't see your comment here, but that second guy's hard to see. Still, I've learned recently that frustrating yourself by trying to learn many things at once is a great way to do a great picture after the one you're finishing right now :P

sketchling
May 14th, 2004, 04:37 AM
Yeah. I really dont like the image that much... definitly an experiment, but I did learn a hell of a lot on it... number one (seems silly. but...) Lighting... I NEVER set up a defined light source... in ANY of my images. Your drawings made that increasingly clear to me. I gotta do far more drawing from life.

:) But tis another step.

Right, well I'm out of it again this week, as I have to do a few pics in a hurry for the mage warfare thing. Oh, I guess I can lie and say this is my dwarf spaceman. When he's at home and not in space, and kinda angry :P : http://toeslikefingers.com/tmp/bv2b.jpg . I need to fix the shadows a little, and the grain on the wood and the light blast up the top of the door, but I'm tryin to rush through a few more, so I'll get to it shortly I promise :S

sketchling
May 16th, 2004, 06:42 AM
:) Thanks dirty_c. All your skill are belong to me... mwahahaha.

By the way, lowpoly and I came up with 'keep away from children' as an idea... kinda open ended, but it could be lots a fun! Basically a character or environment based on a warning label... Im thinkin an environment like a town with evil, pen knife weilding 'friendly' children everywhere, a childs toy with a bite/edge (goo-goo the toy chainsaw or something...?!?!?!) or a crazed elmira-type psycho-babysitter.

the options are endless....

Oh, DirtyC... love that pic. I really like the shadow on the face. One thing though is that the wall behind the head kinda pulls my eye away from the face cause its quite light, which is a pity, cause the face is really emotive. Also some surface details on the handle might help to delineate the form a bit more.. like surface contours. Its a very cool image :) Not really a dwarf... not that mine was either! The point of the weekly thing is to get things going in our heads and make us paint/draw! Which we did. Nothing like group pressure to get one going :)

Love it. Keep em coming!!! :) K

As far as the next meet, I'm up for it. If there's gonna be more, then we could split into small groups and wonder round the Natural History Museum, till we find our preference for drawing. Then meet up at an appoointed time, and compare what reference we 've gathered. Then go find a cafe, and use our references and imaginations. to come up with a creature/demoned etc etc.

Hey bro. Well, it depends where you're staying and how long you think you'l;l be in the city. You'll most likely want to get a zone 1 and 2 travel pass for the day or the weekend. The day is like £4.30 I think and the weekend's more like £6.

It looks like we'll be meeting somewhere centrally. I guess your train might go to Paddington. Here's some tube maps: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/tube_map.shtml and that site is good for all sorts of tube type info.

Hi!

We will most likley meet at the natural hist museum. its at the 'south Kensington' tube stop on the district, circle and I think Picadilly line as well. You probably arrive at paddington or Victoria... so a day-card (4, 50 I think  ) should keep ya sorted for the day, though busses might be cheaper... though I dont know anything about routes.

Looking forward to it myself! Ill bring a whole lot of cool books on concept art and digital art... but I might need help carrying them for the day, or I cant bring them. they would be good inspiration I think. I have one book on 'digital character design and creation' by don seegmiller that fits what we have in mind for saturday too. several chapters dedicated to ways of making character design more effective and creative. If we go for the structured approach that is...

RIGHT everyone...
We'v had the first meeting of the month... now what we gonna do about it? I have more photo's.. dunno why they did not all go up, but they will!

And the topic/task for the month.. a character.

You can either just draw a character based on one or more of the photographs I posted or you took... OR Take it further:
This stuff is out of don seegmillers 'digital character design and painting' - a really interesting book.

Things to think about when designing a character:

1) Create the characters history
where is he/she from and what was his/her youth like?
Where is he living now and why? - house/condo/hole
Where would he want to live? - mansion/hovel/luxury hole

2)Characters every day environment:
Space? Underwater? Underground? Airborne?

3)Characters Personality
whats the characters name?
was the character born, created or hatched
obsessivly neat? a slob?
Educated... dumb?
Is he/she shy/bold, sneaky/gullible, religious, romantic?
What are the characters phobia's - shit scared of slugs?

4) Physical Look - What would he need to look like to fit with1-3?
Thin and gangly? Massivly built? Fat and happy?
Is he made of flesh/rock/metal/plant etc?
Male/female/unsure?
Skin/fur/feathers/rock/other?
What kind of facial features does he have?
Fangs/200 teeth/can he speak?
Does he lurch, walk slowly/fast, is he dignified?

Anyways, these are a few of the questions Don writes down and answers when he makes a character... I Suggest when we make a character we should try do a bit of that too... make tha characters more convincing. Also makes it possible to add the detail, cause you know whats needed if you can answer these and any other questions you come up with.

Right now all I got is 'fnibble the warrior sloth'...

Happy sketching!!!

I've really just been fleshing out a few ideas. Learning more about how to use Painter's tools in the process:

checkit (http://toeslikefingers.com/gallery/untitled02.jpg)

And very nice env, dude. One question: where are the ropes going? are they intended to be relatively parallel to the ground and coming towards the camera? Or more 'flat' to the camera and going up somewhere? I ask because they're getting wider as they go up, which looks like they're coming towards us, but not getting wide enough to really pull it off. And if they're suspension cables from above, I think some of them should be getting narrower too, to show that they're supporting it from all sides.

sketchling
June 22nd, 2004, 01:29 PM
hey cool!! Youv been busy :)
A comment if I may :D
The area.. think it was 2 on your 12321 scale thing of values should be more saturated I think... I just think a couple of brushes with a 'saturate' brush in those area's could will liven the skin tones a bit :)

Really like the way you put that face in the background. :)

As for the cables in that image... This was the first concept sketch...

Hello,

I haven't posted much but I'd be up for a meeting, but I can't figure out where you guys are meeting on the thread (kew gardens?) I'm up in Oxford, so it's pretty cheap to get down to london with the Oxford tube. Just wondering where/what time you are meeting on the 4th.

There is a flamingo behind you.

Dirty C
June 28th, 2004, 03:56 PM
Hm. I guess we might as well meet at Kew Gardens. If only because it will help Cartoonfox's continuing education in navigating the tube :P We'll sort out directions later on. I've never been, but heard it's really good and big, so we might have to make this one a little bit longer than the last one - if it's outside and sunny, maybe pick a few places to stop for an hour or so and draw specific things.

And Molly, you have to tell us everything they said. I've just come back from five days of hedonism at Glastonbury, which was absolutely wicked. We definitely need to get you into a regular thing, if you're not already. If people aren't drawing or working on something, Sketchling's project work is a really great way to explore stuff. And if you're drawing the same thing over and over, which so many of us are guilty of, then it's a great way to break out of that and push yourself.

And since I've been gone, the board seems to have come up with a disgusting default theme. What's going on there??

Well, the priority for me for next time is a photoshop/painter tips and tricks session, preferably watching a couple of the colourist-type pros (senors sketch y pud) run through their typical workflow, and hopefully not arguing so much that we don't learn anything :) I'm not quite sure what the best venue is, though. I'll see if the gf minds us using my place, cause it's pretty central.

Does that still sound like a plan to everyone? Was thinking maybe we could visit the exhibition on a weeknight. Only my thoughts, so don't get the idea I'm laying down the law or anything :) Just whatever works for everyone and they're keen to do.

I might come down to one of these things sometime...
how many of you usually go?

koshime
July 5th, 2004, 01:18 PM
What would be useful is if some of us have some laptops + wacoms handy perhaps for some photoshop/painter/OC sessions. Only thing is we woudl need a central place in london that allows for folk to meet up, plug in and fire up their laptops.

Was thinking of investing in one (ala photoshop monster) later this month.
On that note, there is the debate of a Mac vs power notebook. Personally, I am not too partial to the mac OS, but from a specification adn resolution point of view, Mac Powerbooks are pretty high on design, function and more importantly photoshop-ability...

p/s Incidentally, for those interested in the MA courses/ Industrial Design in London, I'm not sure if Royal College of Arts London is still having its MA exhibition going. (normally good mainly for the transport and design) I know the Central Saint Martins exhibition is finisihed/.virtually finished (good for jewerly, fashion and textiles, some interesting pieces on show) as most fok have broken up for the term last week

Molly
July 5th, 2004, 02:13 PM
Dirty_C - if ur GF dont mind, ur place seems cool. And the exhibition during the week? - Fair enough, there would actually be less people than if we went on the weekend...
Troy - so far, we've had, 4 meetings? (back me up guys) and on Sunday there was 5 of us. We'd all like more people to turn up, it's getting the UK'ers to look in this thread. Come down man, serious, we would like to meet you...
Koshime - as Dirty_C said, if his gf dont mind, we could all bowl round his place. Its pretty central. Nrth London? I think...

It's definitely worth it. People have different combinations of skills: some are colour dudes, some are anatomy freaks like me, some are combinations, and some have great ideas for how to free up your imagination. There's no hero worship and everyone's free to argue a point. And everyone has something to learn.

In some ways, it's helpful to just talk about this stuff, cause hardly any of us encounter people in our daily lives who know what we're on about. And hav ing three or four people there to try different ways of explaining something really helps it sink in.

cartoonfox
July 5th, 2004, 05:03 PM

next to the amsterdam workshop, its the most insperational thing for me. nothing beats seeing other people sketching, seeing how they aproch things. think things looks go on here? scanners do these guys no justice ^-^ seeing sketches in real life is so awesome.

and you can learn so much from each other too. and like dirty_c said, theres no "master & apprentice" type stuff, everyone is here to just hang out and draw ^-^

Hey guys,

Thought I'd share this you all. As some you may know, there was a Grand Prix promotional thing in London yesterday, where they were racing F1 cars round London. 1/4 million ppl turned up to catch a glimpes of the cars racing by. Fortunately, my bf was photographing for the Met, and got some cool pics.
Drivers were: David Colthard, Nigel Mansell, Jensin Button, and Juan Pablo Montoya - tho I dont think he was driving...

check frame 032 - Cartoonfox looks like Juan Pablo Montoya!

just thought i'd run this by you all, i'm gonna see if i can afford it, though 90euros isnt too bad at all.

yeah, taht's what i was missing - and kingda expecting - in amsterdam. Dunno if I can really afford to go to Germany, though. Damn, that sounds really excellent, too...

cartoonfox
July 8th, 2004, 10:43 AM
well try your best to go ^-^ i'm sure it'll be realy cool.

90euros is £60
and you can get a return flight for about £175 (i'm sure you can get cheaper, but i havent looked hard enough)
and the hostel that marco mentioned is about £31 for 3 nights, in a 8 beed room.

if you can go, then that would be cool. i'll even help you robb a bank ^-^

ok check this out

if you fly from luton on the 19th and leave 24th, it comes to a total of £30!!!!!!!! (i chose the cheapest times

so can you go now ^-^

Err Luton.
Man, that area is like a road traffic accident zone on the M1.

I used to work at Luton & Dunstable Hosp A&E for 4 months.
But that certainly takes the mick £30 for that duration. Its cheaper than an average trip from Work to N London!! :bash:

What does one do in germany from 19th-24th btw? *grin*

cartoonfox
July 8th, 2004, 12:48 PM
cant you take a train to luton? if so thats what i'll be doing, otherwise i'll have to go from bristol.

I'm actually not too cocnerend abtou goign to Berlin. nice to eb abel to but not essential.
I feel teh regular london meets woudl be far more beneficial from a learnign standpoint and a way of improving ones art from a personal standpoint.

I wont be back till July 20th.
So depends when you guys hold the meeting next..

Is dirty C's place drivable to?? Which region is it in. central lon or greater lon

Loads of people in here and you all wonder round where I vaguely know.

When/will there be another meet up in town (ie London)? Read through the first page then skipped to the last and im chasing up a job in wardour street too, though its for a runner!

P.S. kids dont drop out of college you get stuck with limited job prospects, oh well better save up to go back in a few years. in the mean time I can visit loads of galleries and look at all the books and design mags i cant afford during lunch! :clapping1

P.S.S. If anyone knows of jobs going for an A-level trained student (and an A&D foundation course drop-out, due to many reasons that have now been resolved) within a creative company of any sort then give me a shout (PM). Dont know whether im allowed to do that but just did.

P.S.S.S. Just read properly and found out the meeting thing, cant it be nearer Eltham/ j/k lol!

another P.S. If its mechanical and makes sense in terms of physics i draw it, in particular vehicles (cars and motorbikes). I'll get some pics up but have recently got into life drawing and natural things, as of last Sept with a Saturday class.

Sorry for wittering on, and have fun!

hi there, welcome to the forums ^-^

yep, there surely is another meet up. we meet every first sunday of the month, in a chosen place in london. we choose where nearer the date.
so the next meet is 1st august, from 11am to about 4/5pm (though might be longer next time)

so far we have been to the pub, a museum (cant remember the name, but it was big ^-^) and last one was at kew gardens.

so this 4th one we're gonna go chill at dirty_c's house (he'll give the address nearer the date) and we're just gonna draw all day (maybe even a mini thunderdome) with all sorts of styles and things going on, including a photoshop tutorial/battle between sketchling and summer pudding. the whole thing should be awesome.

it'd be cool if you could come along (although if we get alot of people this time, dirty_c might want to change his mind ^-^ dunno how big his house is ^-^)
so just keep your eye on this thread (maybe subscrive to it) and then about a week before 1st august, we'll all go crazy and sort things out like address, times, etc etc

Yeah, my place is actually really small, so hopefully the weather's good and we're not all stuck inside. The number of attendees fluctuates closer to the date normally, so we'll take a look at it on the week. I don't imagine it'll be a problem.

Oh, and I meant to say: I'm going to a drop-in life drawing class tonight, from 7-9. It's right by the angel tube station and it's a fiver. Anyone who wants to tag along, gimme a shout or just show up even. More info here: http://www.candidarts.com/candid_arts_trust.htm (click on 'classes')

mmmmmmmmmm. Lunch break, wait no i still dont work. :ahha:

Anyway that looks good, does anyone know of any life drawing classes like that but perhaps in Lewisham/Camberwell/Deptford/Greenwich? Or further out into somewhere like Dartford/Bexleyheath etc? (or Bromley)

Otherwise ill have to trek up there in a few weeks, thanks for the link!

Anybody ever thought bout asking one of the galleries if they have a large area that you can use? If theres a few, say maybe 15+ then they may help, remember theyre all people and interested in art as well. If not go and sit in the Tate Modern. :smirk:

There's always the park :)

And Molly's in Deptford as well, so she'd probably be keen to find one with you (though I've conned her into coming up to Angel anyhow).

My gf works in Deptford and seems to think it's got a great artistic community. Funny that nobody seems to be able to find it..

Now you know i'm a complete weirdo/computer geek/nerd/ general layabout/bum, being able to post to this sooooo quickly.

I do attend life-drawing classes in Greenwich (Royal Hill), forgot the school name but its next to the Cop shop/Police station and is part of the Greenwich Community College. But that only runs on Saturdays during term time so............ :nopity:

My work lol :googley: I have a very good imagination but currently struggle to put it onto paper. Oh well its getting better!

Funny you should say acuna_red, as my hairs ginger and long for a lad (shoulder length). I'll get some car sketches up cause I can do those well(ish) :jump2:

ciao :beam:

I really need to get out more or do something. :arcfreak: oh well!

Anyway, its a pay up front thingy and costs a fair bit (too much IMO) but the classes are ok (dont remember the price either, and I had discount last year which i wont this). Greenwich CC (http://www.gcc.ac.uk/pls/hot_sys/aff_page_pls_user_content?a=140703&ccd=home)
Heres stuff but the site is shockingly appauling and the course search feature barely works, better off phoning em up. I might give Lewisham a go this year though, had an old (A-level) teacher go there and he seemed to like it.

Just checked out Camberwell and they do some classes, I think hteyre open to general public. Have to phone up for costs though as it doesnt mention any
short courses (http://www.arts.ac.uk/shortcourses/shortcourses.htm)
These are probably good, but gonna be steep in price.

Just checked CSM and they do some drawing classes that are £250 for 25 hours spread over 10 weeks. But thats CSM, theyre must be cheaper?

Off to eat some Lemons!

Does anyone want to meet up before august 1st? (I'm going to be going down to London at some point) As I'm probably not going to be able to meet up on the 1st, one of my friends has a 21st birthday on july 30th in derby which I'm possibly going to be getting quite drunk at.... So if anyone is around London at anypoint between now and then, do you want to meet up?

Just got home (half hour or so) and now watching racing on the telly (WSBK) and decided to flick through, ive got a great idea and was using the "drahn time 8" picture as reference, the bird standing up against a shed. I'll post that tomoz morn(today) and hopefully you can give some tips/ideas/snyde remarks.

I was also reading through the beggining of this thread and saw bits about getting more members and also other things like............cheap equipment. So heres a couple of ideas, only a few drinks so should be fully coherent

1) get more people, I dont know how to do it but get more, was looking at the pictures of the Nat History meet and saw cartoonfox is built like a brick shit-house (note to self: dont wind cartoonfox up) :afro2: Anyway, perhaps some posters around town? Theres also another way of doing it, *ahem* stencil art. Start putting them up in places like the London Graphics centre, up round Tott Court Road book-shops (Magma is a good shop) outside the tate etc etc.

2) Someone who knows a good supply shop/wholesalers who can offer a good discount so all of us (and anyone who visits London from around the world) can get reasonable priced supplies. If anyone from other countries read this perhaps doing all over the world would be good? Like a secret code (thats the drink talking :partyguy: )

I'll now fall asleep in a stuper, and no i cant spell either! :waves:

not being handily located "dahhn sahhffff", i'm looking into some life-drawing classes up here in nottingham. No joy so-far, but i know a few people who might be interested so i'd even consider starting one up myself. The only question would be how.

Anyone got any ideas is this area - venue hire etc. I'd be particularly interested in suggestions on going about getting models without getting slapped/punched/arrested.

P.S. Molly, looking through the pics of people thread and was wondering if

and

B) have you ever been in neighbours? :btu:

@Pixelherder, no idea how to do that. But thought of putting up small adds in local art shops? maybe one or two colleges?

Hey Aidan, not familiar with Nottingham, but there must be a college that does drop in life drawin classes or summink. If ur going to start ur own group, maybe ask a few friends first, see if any are up for modelling. They dont have to be fully naked...Im lucky enough to have one friend whos up for it.(but Im not sure if she'd pose for a group ^_^.) Ask around, if no luck, then try ppl in the street, you never know, nuthin to lose?
Cartoon - 'built-like-a-brick-shit-house' means ur a BIG bloke, so dont mess wit him...;P
