Once again I'm viciously hung over.

Oh hey, in my pained stupor, I found a great sketchbook at borders for only a fiver! They're made in the states, black hardbound and pretty big. I've been paying stupid money (like £8 or something) for spiral bound ones from a proper art store, but this is better. It's got a big S on the cover, so maybe it is Strathmore..

MarkDN
June 5th, 2005, 12:44 PM
I use A5 black cloth bound hardback books from Paper Chase. They're decently thick (must be 300 - 400 pages) so they tend to last about a year. They used to be a steal at a fiver, but the last time I got one it was eight quid. They're too cool to be without though. I've also got a nine inch square pad in the same style, but I think I got that in the UCL college shop.

What's Eurocom?
.
What is Eurocom? This question has been asked by the qreat philosophers since the dawn of thought. Some say it never really existed, like Atlantis or the great civilisations of Cimmeria. But others compare it to Brigadoon, and that mortals can only see it every hundred years, before it disappears into the mists of imagination once more. Others say it is a games company in Derby, but these people are dismissed as fools and usually end up gibbering in the corner of some asylum somewhere pawing their genitals.

any other 3d artists on here?

Depends what you call "art" hehe. I've just started playing with Maya again after a five-year hiatus. Man, it's easy to do things in a way that make sense and look ok until you have to render the damn things. Ugh.

Any way, I think there's a few Midlanders who are into it.

And I just took a quick look at your site - "art" is definitely what I'd say you do.

Hmmm... 'nice paintings'? have you SEEN the fine art world for the last 10 years? come to mention it, there havent been a lot of paintings recently in the fineart world and they are certainly ARTISTS (always in caps)... very often of the 'con' variety I think. But hey... if ya can get away with it...

The trick is to use 3d as a tool to bring interesting ideas to life rather than to see what cool stuff the program and renderer has in it... An artist should be able to make something interesting in any medium if he/she has to.
:blahblah:

Oh, and by the way... ya did know mullins uses 3d a lot didnt ya? its a very quick perspectiive tool.

At my college shop the art supplies are subsidised and DIRT cheap. So i'm not complaining! Ach, it depends what world you're looking at, right? Check out the Mall galleries from time to time - I've been to a couple of exhibitions there recently, by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Society of Artists. There's a decent range of style, if not the most avant-garde range of content, and there are some fantastically skilled painters to be seen.

There's 'Fursty Ferret' which i think is a badger ale (great brewery!)... Golden Glory's an interesting drink too. And Matt Dixon was telling me about another of Badger's ales that's got ginger in it. He bought one for me when he was down in Cornwall, but drank it 'by accident' in his garden before he came back into the office. Hmmmm.

But not wanting to get back on a North vs. South discussion... you can't beat a nice thick gulp of 'Old Peculiar' and that's from yorkshire. :P

And someone left a couple of scottish beers at my girlfriend's birthday bbq on saturday that were just LOVELY. I think they were by Innis and Gunn and they were over 6%. Aged in Whiskey barrels and bloody tasty.

'Blandford Fly' is Badger's gingery one. Stick it in the fridge ( shut up, ale snobs ) until it's just starting to get a chill on and drink it in the garden to enjoy at it's best.

Beers for poofs, though. Gin's where it's at for summer boozin'.

duddlebug

gin'n'tonic? lemon or lime?

Oyster Stout's a good one too!! And Golden Promise is a tasty pint. And I like a sturdy pint of Marstons Old Empire in the winter too. And then for the connoisseur, there's the weird but wonderful Banana Beer. Can't remember who brews it, and it just doesn't sound right... but it's feckin' lovely.

But if i was only allowed one alcoholic beverage it'd have to be red wine, methinks...

Old Peculiar is lovely when well kept. It's also thick enough to keep you regular!

Some models cant a strike a pose, and that pisses me off, you need variation. Maybe there should be some kinda course ya have to take to learn about being a life model, why you are needed, and what the artist expects from you. IMO, the model needs to understand art too in some way...

"boss eyed"?

And heh - my worst experienced included a chubby geezer with a drippy knob. I'm serious, long threads of goo which reached the whole way to the floor over the course of ten minutes before falling off.

My theory is he 'cleaned the pipes' before the class avoid embarrassment. I can only assume he had no idea it was happening.

It's hard just to talk about it.

That's... ugh.

IMO Mol's right, though - the model's got to have as almost much of an interest as the artists. At least one of the regulars is an artist herself, so that's pretty good.

Hang on, 'fridged'? Hands up who's ever been to a class with a refridgerated model (or perhaps a refridgerator model? Most astonishing one I ever saw had the word 'SMEG' emblazoned across the front. Must have been foreign. Hope nobody bought it. It was in a shop in Shrewsbury a few years back.)?

Heh, Smeg is a popular Italian brand of homeware. They do good ovens :)

And Imery was at one recently where the 'model' turned up, and was actually a model. Not a life model. Unfortunately, she couldn't be persuaded to get her kit off haha. But the weirdo arrogant geezer in the class took his kit off, then got his gf to come and take photos of him being naked in public. *shudder*

Nah, the worst is when the model decides to go walkabout in the nip at the halftime break. It's hard to drink your tea with a pair of saggy knockers a few inches from your cheek.

"I like the chiarascuro you've achieved on the shoulder."

"Yeah, I like bathrobes too luv."

God, I'm such a Victorian Dad. I should lighten up.

Now im only 19 and even I know its best to stand away from your drawing when it comes to bbreaks otehrwise they will lean over your shoulder. Infinately more disconcerting for me when it's men.

Ah, well so far all the models have worn a dressing gown during the break.

I'm getting the impression that these classes don't always go smoothly...

What sort of music do you guys usually have playing where you do life drawing? I usually get some slow classical stuff. The one time they put on something with a bit of an edge, it was swiftly turned off because it put everyone else off! :nohope:

btw, how common are male models? Where I go, there are four regulars, and they're all women.

Bring your trusty mp3 player/ E4 pod and stick on a good pair of noise reduction cans (so no one else can hear) and have a blast.

Personally, I vary between film soundtracks and 80s :)

It all about enjoying yourself and using the model/time at the studio to full effect....

Where i go to college the only models are keith (amazing model stays still for hours. When asked if he wants a break while in a crazy pose, he usually says no, like "the pose can't beat me!!")
And then colin who slowly moves, and his hands are alwayx fidgeting.
You can see if you move around the room, his gradual movement from where one person started to another.

Hmmm... to anyone who felt bad at not being able to go to the painter demo the other night at the mac store...Ugh. DONT! What a moron. Not only did he dance at one point and do the splits in front of a picture of elvis, but his paintings were horrible coloured...except for some startlingly accurate ones...which it turns out were photo paint-overs. good old clone-colour setting. He'd a been ripped on these forums big time.

Oh, and did I mention he loved himself? urg.

About the life drawing... Iv never had anything too odd with the model except the walk-around looking over your shoulder hippy droopy types, but I have seen some funny students... we had some VERY conservative people in my class in south africa! Our first life drawing class was quite a shock to a few such girls... one even screamed rushing from the room, hands firmly over both mouth and eyes. HAHAHAHA. It was a golden moment. :nohope:

Nice one, Badger :)

I haven't started mine, and I'm off to Glastonbury for a week from tomorrow morning. So I guess I'll have to think about it down there.

I've gone for the Rome one, and to be honest, am regretting it somewhat. Everyone seems to have gone for it, and while that should push people to greater lateral thinking and creativity, I think we've seen in the past that often the more obvious entry ends up winning. It's a pity we don't include space for the explanation of the concept, as I worry that people just end up looking for the obvious visual clues they're expecting to be there. ie: if there's no gladiators and no marble columns, it's going to be quite difficult convincing people it's anything to do with Rome (especially when a lot of judges take roughly seven seconds to judge the entire contest..)

What do people think about this?

Baaaah!
June 21st, 2005, 05:25 AM
I - personally :) - don't have an issue if people want to include things like that. In some respects I'd suggest that it's one of the reasons why that particular topic is so popular in-fact. If you were making a film that involved a Rome of the future, then your audience would be expecting, to an extent, features that provided some form of visual connection with Rome's past. So it looked, well, Roman I suppose, but in an updated form perhaps. You wouldn't have the oppotunity to explain why this Rome of the future looked the way it did, and even if you did, your audience still wouldn't really identify with it if it didn't establish some degree of visual relationship with what had gone before.
If you can meet that expectation whilst avoiding what you describe as the obvious visual clues, then I'll be mightly impressed and of course I'll be eating my own words :teeth: It's a bit like saying design a dragon, but it hasn't got to look like a dragon.

I take your point though and I've a feeling I sound a bit consevative, still that's my thought for today. I'm doing Rome as well - I bet you can't guess what that's probably going to look like :D

Summer Pudding
June 21st, 2005, 08:15 AM
I wanted this subject to be as open to interpretation as possible, and saw it as a chance for people to don their architectural history/evolution head. Which iconic images would endure, which would not stand the test of time. Would they all still be wearing togas, or would they only be wheeled out for sombre, ancient ceremonies, in the manner of the state opening of parliament, or high court judges. I'll hazard a guess Black Rod doesn't wear that ridiculous clobber when he nips down the shops for a pint of semi-skimmed.

If I gave a more specific brief, wouldn't that stifle creativity?

Pud'

Midnight

Hehe, so who's going to do a reincarnation of Hannibal slaughtering the imperialistic legionaries? Perhaps Rome has split once more between East and West, or maybe it's finally re-united on its 3000th anniversary? Maybe someone'll do a caricature of a US president assuming the mantle of the glorious Caligula (complete with Senatorial steed)...

Another life drawing class, another new model. Male, this time (first one we've had since I've been going). Not bad, held his poses pretty well, but his poses were so *boring!* He only did one standing pose, because he didn't think he could hold one for more than about 10 min. Geez, I can do Qigong for 20+ min, so I'm sure a model can hold *at least* two 10 min poses, can't he? Apparently not.

Ah well, next week's the last before the summer break (which doesn't end until some time in September), so we're all be off to the pub for a quick drink afterwards!

btw, anyone else notice it's Summer Solstice today? Hope you all had a good one!

Hey Pud,
You've got me the wrong way round. I'm good with the open concept, I was just suggesting that maybe if we actually did allow people some space to explain the subject, it'd allow for a bit more creativity and lateral thinking.

sketchling
June 22nd, 2005, 11:35 AM
Funnily enough, I always find that when the brief is tightest, you have to be the most creative... it takes more thinking to be origional. That said though, sometimes though its hard to paint an interesting image when ya think about it too much. It could be an idea next time to have a global theme like we have here, but each pair of contestants has to narrow down the brief as they choose.

Molly : You'll have to check the mac site... iv purged his name from my brain. I think the sms you sent me was the right name though.

Dave - Yep. All the positions available are in the environment or character teams working on next-gen stuff, so you'd need a pretty thorough understanding of high polygon realtime 3D modelling / texturing. I suppose the least technical role would be texture painting, but you'd still need to be proficient with unwrapping and laying out complex UV's and have good knowledge of material creation - normal and specular mapping and so on...

Hello, erm, people...

Finally got around to registering with CA.org yesterday, and thought I'd randomly introduce myself on the UK forum.

I'm a freelance concept/previs artist, though the contract I was working on got prematurely ended a few weeks ago, so I guess I'm technically unemployed.

My profile says 'London', but that's really wishful thinking - I'm actually in the piece of concrete home-counties awfulness that is Farnborough until I get some more work and manage to move back.

You can catch some of my older work at

www.aj-concepts.net

Unfortunately, the film I was just working on gave me the most annoying confidentiality agreement of all time - I'm allowed to show 'originals' of the work I did there to people in person (though how a printout of digital art is 'original' I'll never know), but I'm not allowed to 'copy' them, which apparently means no postings on the web. Most of the work on my site is therefore over a year old, which is a bit frustrating.

Anyway, introduction done. Look forward to talking to you all.

Take care

AJ

I think Davi wrote it in when i won the COW. Wondering if he meant 'butler'.... but then that's still confusing. I might PM him to see what it's all about!!

And Koshime... You can set the sliders up to do whatever you want (when you've installed the software!). I've got one on zoom and one on brush size. Brush size can be pretty useful if you have your cursor set to brush size, so you can see what you're doing. Quicker than CTRL+]... although i find my left hand's hovering over the keyboard for short cuts most of the time anyway. The only problem with the sliders is they're quite sensitive... and sometimes you set 'em off by accident. I disable them sometime's when they're pissing me off. It's noticable on the A5 (which i use at work). I was using the 21" Cintiq for a couple of weeks and the sliders were great. But then so was the Cintiq. *sigh*....

Absolutely! And may I add what a true gentleman he is as well. The epitomy of polite helpfulness and suave sophistication. Almost the idealisation of perfection, if such a thing were possible. Watch the skies Mr Dixon... the eclairs are coming...

Congrats to Mr Dixon :)

Koshime - I Havent much experience with setting up dual screen displays but what i do know is that viewsonic have a new monitor out called the v191 which is a 19' lcd with an 8ms response time (you need to check the specs though as viewsonic update products without changing thier name). Its suposed to be very good all round so itll be fine for graphics and games (i think there is a review on tomshardware.com). Be wary of other monitors with a response time of 16ms or less, they often sacrifice colou accuracy for the fast response time. You could also try finding out about Eizo mointors wich are suposed to be great for graphics work.

I wouldn't quite put him on the posh's pedestal though. "The epitomy of polite helpfulness and suave sophistication"?? Posh doesn't have to share his 'bodily air' all day.

I actually took the early picadily tube line to work today aroudn 6am....when i checked into hospital, we were halfway through our open heart syrgery when our hospital was put on major incident alert (a plan for all NHS hospitals to deal with potential war or future terroris threats which we updated about a few months ago)

Kinda still sinking in, that if i did a regular 9-5 job and took a later tube at 8.45.....would have been stuck in that tragedy.

At least for me, I'll be driving my car to work from now on, But will probably have to camp in hospital over the next few days till i can hitch a safe ride home, up north from hammersmith

BOLLOCKS do I go up London Tony LOL! Too much feckin hassle.

You guys sure you want to ride pushbikes around London? Ive been around London on Pushbikes and motorbikes and I have near misses every single time, some my fault many not. The tube is ALOT safer, even after this thing. Just walk if you can.

I just read something that some guy got taken down by armed police near Canary Wharf, dont know whether that's true or not. And there were shit loads of military helicopters going around the Woolwich (SE London) army barracks the weekend just gone, probably for that live 8 stuff but still alot of green choppers.

ho-hum, the world keeps on spinning!

Edit: Thought id reitterate the cycling thing if you are seriously considering it. It is EXTREMELY dangerous! Exhillirating, but you put your life into the hands of otehr people everytime you go out, you have no control over anything. It is just constant avoidance, do a cycle course or something.

MarkDN
July 11th, 2005, 04:41 AM
Um, guys, what *is* the thing in Waterperry?

Art in Action. It's large arts festival in Oxfordshire in the grounds of Waterperry house. There are loads of tents and marquees set up with exhibitions and artists actually working and demonstrating while they chat to the visitors. There are also practical classes, concerts, lectures, food, Pimms and wine (although the food is great it can be a little pricey so a picnic might be a good plan). There are painters, sculptors, glass blowers and blacksmiths. There are tents for Calligraphy, ceramics, Eastern Arts, Raku (eh?), Story telling, Textiles, Woodwork, Music, Performing arts, clock makers and a dozen other things. The lawn in front of the house is covered with tables and chairs for people to chill out and drink Pimms on. Or Wine, Beer and strawberries and raspberries and cream. The location itself is stunning; the gardens are absolutely magical and the fields with the tents are surrounded by trees and orchards.

It lasts for four days, from Thursday the 14th to Sunday the 17th. It tends to pull twenty five to thirty thousand people over the four days.

Entry charges; Adults £13.50, Pensioners £10.00, Students (bring yer card) £8.00, 9-17 year olds £6.50, Under 9s Free.

There's a big field to park in.

Come.

The website ( http://www.artinaction.org.uk/) doesn’t begin to do justice to it, but it’ll probably give you more details.

I just mucked around with ideas on a piece of paper until I had an idea I liked. I sketched out several different concepts for what he might look like, and then arranged the scene (tacking things down with blu-tack! Class...).

I'm sure you'll find an idea somewhere (Google, films, books, nightmares, trips to the supermarket, all the usual).

BTW - Art In Action was awesome - I had so much fun camping out in! met nuff people from all areas of the Arts and craft world - glass blowers/scluptors; textiles, calligraphy, woodwork, clock-makers, painting you name it, it was there. Made me appreciate the other areas of art and craft that you never get to see - best bit for me was the Japanese drum group, Haiko drummers I think I forget - anyway, they are in London at the Royal Albert Hall, I recommend seeing them, very uplifting and entertaining, they got a good crowd and the most applause. The Glass blowing was so cool, and the only campers who dared to start a bonfire...the clock makers made a big ass clock from scratch over the 4 days, then put it up in a raffle...inspiring to say the least...I am art-ed out - I need sleep....

So, a meet...its summer and we need one...

-whos up for it?
-whos free?
-Is there something specific that people want to do?
-Do you want a meet over the 2 days of a weekend?
-1 day during the week perhaps?
-Do you want to do some life drawing? I can get the space if its planned properly and people are willing to pay for the space and model???

How would one of you pro-digital artist feel about giving a demo of how you work? We could life-draw-it during the day, and have a digi-demo in the afternoon/evening?

I'd like us all to have a good meet up where its not just us lot sitting in a pub trying too damn hard to communicate with-one another...

please, let me know your thoughts!

Yeah, I'm up for that kinda action. It'd be good if we could get a projector for the digital art stuff. I should be able to borrow one, I think.

Steph mentioned you were looking, Cai - but somehow I think our temperaments are a little different :)

Reasonably. Still toying around with several ideas, tweaking, re-balancing, etc.

Still a huge amount to do, but then there's still a lot of time in which to do it!

Yeah, know what you mean - I've got two completely different pics on the go, and they're both just about done, I reckon. Obviously I have a lot of time on my hands just now..

Damn this no-posting-WIPs bollocks.

mmm...cool...another TD? rarr - that came round fast....I'll have a lookey in the Challenges Forum....

Cartoon - hope you find a place real soon. I may be in need of a place in the near future, but I cant make any promises as yet ;)

As for the meet, my preferences are for an all-day-Saturday-thang, with life drawing in the morning/afternoomn; digi-demo in the evening finishing round 9-10pm. A projector i can get too from a friend - but as much help with equipment etc would be cool...

waddya guys think?

Sounds perfect.

What about the venue for the evening bit? Depending on the date, we may be able to use mine if we need to.

I'm hoping work can provide that - but there will be a charge for using the space and hire of the model. I'd need to negotiate with my Principle, as the meet is not an official Academy course; they are a charity, and well, you get the gist.....

If its not possible, then we can arrange for just life drawing, then, yaa - off to DC's for an evening of digi-demos, and fun...

As far as dates go, during the week or weekend would need to be negotiated. We have our summer school on atm, so we'll need to work around that. Im hoping to get a few of the resident artists along, as some have shown interest in digital art. I think it would be a good way for the Academy to see digital/conceptual art in all its glory and the processes we all take to get to a finished piece.

Ideally, I'd like some of you Pro's to pop down and contribute by showing us how YOU do it - characters, environments, vehicles, etc etc, using digital, marker pens, pencils - whatever - you ALL get the gist....(hhmmmm...this is beginning to sound like a workshop...I dont want it to get to that point too much) but I think a healthy meet-up is necassary for us all to learn offa eachother and connect....

Ah... London hasn't got any closer. Bollocks.

I can see now I'm not going to get that sweet. No meetup, no sweet, no decent colours for my LMS entry yet...

Who else is really hoping for some major upsets in the first round?

Cackling evilly,
Mid.

Thanks for the welcome guys :D !!

Badger : he he I have a penchant for upper case type, don't ask me why, I would write this in capitals if it wasn't considered unpolite.....

Cartoonfox : where is your campus going to be ?

Remember I said I had no idea about colour? Anyone else ever had to completely re-start the painting becaues the sky, ground and figures are all using palettes that don't work together (and, hey, when they're all taking different light sources as well - bang-up job so far, this one...).

Crying into my tea,

Mid - Its all about the blocking in at the beggining in my experience. See which colours work. I just have to remember the pallete i use when ever painting traditionally *prussian blue, lemon, magenta, sometimes a bit of burnt umber* I find i get confused by the choice in digital programs.
Molly Sounds wonderful, i'll be sure to call in sick for work whenever you have it arranged. Target on numbers?
Maybe we should use the field of dreams approach "if you build it they will come" or possibly just waft the smell of beer and tea, and apple and pork sausages. Who could resist?
