Guys, bit of an open question for you midlanders working in the gme scene here.

How does one actually go about getting into one of your places? I'm guessing it has something to do with actually applying for jobs, or somesuch bollocks. One day, y'see, I hope to stop wearing this pinstripe suit, making loads of money and living in a place I love, and start earning something south of the minimum wage to draw things I never wanted to draw and pretending I have newfound self respect.

What's a brother gotta do??

Hey Frankie ... pity I didn't make it down this time, woulda been fun.

Those Letraset inks are very cool, I've been using them with a big fat paintbrush on certain pages of my sketchbook, it's nice for making custom toned paper, and also as a base for painting/coloured pencilling over. Also works well behind black/white gel pens. Use it in a ventilated room though... actually wait, it's you... try it in a really enclosed space with no ventilation at all - it'll make you think that whatever you're drawing is f*ckin' awesome... wooo... spinny...

Dirty_C: I'm down for speedpainting! This time I'm in all day, so I won't be late (unless I forget) ... just reinstalling Windows and Photoshop after my hard drive died last week, but I should be good to go for tonight...

That's ok. As far as actual character design goes, by the way, I think Don Seegmiller's book has the best overview of how to think of them. Of course, I didn't read too much of it, cause I wanted to see how he uses Painter, but Kim seems to have memorised it, so maybe you'll get some help from him too :)

koshime
April 21st, 2005, 12:28 PM
the method don seegmiller uses, is quite painter orientated, and makes quite good sense of painting forms based on colour hues, based on the background adn enviro colours. it is by far the best, how to paint digitally for charac I would say. Saying that, seeing him paint on a fwe QT files, and doing it oneself is still a large gap to leap....

Kim, I love that jellyfish pic. The clouds are just beautiful, I can see the influence Sung Heung - whats-his-name has had on you. (sorry, cant spell that fellows name) And the design for the creature is cool too. I love the colors and the effects you have put in to show that the creature is kinda smooth and almost 'squeeshy' .... well, 'jellyfish' like...;)
...aw the sky has blown me away. Kim, any chance of a mini-tutorial for the sky? I love painting clouds when I get to -always a good solution for putting in backgrounds when the focus is the character- but I can never get the texture right for clouds; the whispy, candy floss like texture you got going on there....nice...

@ Badger - best thing to do if ya want Painter, is download a trial version(preferably painter9) and then go and find a 'patch' for it. This'll stop the 30 day trial, and you can carry on using it. Its the cheapest way I found to gain the program. Um, I think I have a copy I can get over to you??? Lemme know.

@trev - sort the links out on your character pics! I like the female pic, but the rest I cant see! the weapons that show, are nicely rendered tho....

haha... yeah. kim was slackin. I intended to finish that but descided to actually go home for achange instead. Dont worry though. I intend to go back and actually design that box in mah sketchbook. :D

Molly :) Yeah, thats a bit of ol seung ho's influence... watching him paint clouds is inspirational in the extreame. Clouds are also a VERY good exercise for understanding subtle value changes. and value in general!

Couple a tips that help a lot with clouds though
1) They are surprisingly sharp edged.
2) Paint back and forthe from the positive to the negitive shapes. Whispy stuff is best painted by making a stroke and eating back into it with the colour its painted over.
3) Create a cloudy kinda brush with an opacity that varies with pressure. Make sure its capable of hard edges.
4) Get some good reference pics of clouds from somewhere like mayang.com or imageafter.com and try copy them... iv messed up a few cloud pics before I could do that one. Reference is the key. Studies are what give you the edge. Studies and understanding WHY light behaves as it does.

I think CAS is now a concept artist and can shed more clear light on this subject.

Nope, don't do concept art just yet. :)

Still modelling and texturing but it's characters, not environments, these days.

Hi all my fellow brits,

I have an annoying Wacom question. I want to get a Intuos I, II or III preferably A4, but i am a broke student :bashful:

where can i get one? i have looked on Ebay and all of the Intuos I A4's go for about £150+

I also compared the UK price with the USA price and don't understand why there's such a big difference.

UK PRICE
Intuos 2 - A4 serial, Dabs.co.uk £417.99

USA - PRICE
Wacom website (USA ONLY) Intuos2 A4 tablet with Serial connector (PC) - $469.95 (converts to £245.91)

What ho, chaps. There's a little tutorial-thingy ( more a collection of progress images really ) for one of my doodles over in the COW section, if anyone's interested - http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43114

You lot should really get your idle fingers out and join in the fun over at the Creature of the Week. That Seattle lot are well represented most rounds.

J2XA - Ebay is the cheapest source of Wacom products I've found. Are you certain you want an A4 - is that what you're using at the moment? I used a 12"x12" Wacom Ultrapad for years, then downsized to an A4 Intuos, and now I'm using an A5. I really only bought it so I could fit a tablet in my laptop bag, but it's by far the best size in my opinion - it frees up lots of desk space over the A4 version and, unless you're using a HUGE monitor, means your pen movement on the pad will be closer in scale to your cursor movement on screen. You'll save a fair bit of dosh, too.

Matt wow, that tutorial is next on my list to read, its insanly great that people put the time and effort in to write things like tutorials and such, much appreiciated.

Kim Ahhh! jellyfish my great fear, now invade the sky, theres no escape! I will just have to imagine up something bigger to fight them off. Seriously though beautiful painting, I love the change in strong blues and liquid/fluid look. The floaty jellyfish like cloudbehind is great as well,

talking of things to read I didn't get round to that reading that extensive light link you sent.
Reading this -"Studies and understanding WHY light behaves as it does." reminded me of it
Is this one of those things thats really good to read before making another drawing and getting under your belt? A drawing belt would be cool, wonder what it would look like.

DirtyC The devil in constantine was cool, I feel guilty for not wanting something more visual and TERRIFYING though

Molly Sorry i've stolen your bold naming :bashful: I wish you the all the best with your careering! You don't need any luck thats for sure

Does anyone know if there are any good threads on a topic like -
"When do you count a drawing a complete?"
or something similar? like other parts of books or articles that might help me out.
I suppose I know its something you answer yourself really, but i'd be interested to here other peoples views on it "hint hint"...
Trying to photorealistically shade everything is feeling wasted, but I keep slipping into it.
Maybe its time to reach for a paintbrush/waacom tablet.

Wow thanks everyone for the help.......i got some pretty cold feedback in the general lounge!!

I am using an A4 Aiptek at the moment but it is really bad (the pressure sensitivity is really dodgy and the ratio seems to change so all of a sudden whilst i am drawing the cursor will shoot of across the screen). It takes batteries in the pen so isn't that reliable.
but when it is working the ratio seems to be quite good, but if you say the A5 is good i'll definitely look into it!!

Thanks!

If you ever need feedback/comments/crits please send me a private message or contact me through J2XA.com (there's a feedback form to put a query in)

I thought people might like to know (and I'm sure he won't mind me saying) that Duddlebug from the UK CA, became a daddy yesterday at 10.23 with a little girl weighing 6lb.13oz (phew!), which might explain why he's been a little quiet on the CA front recently (as I have, although not for the same reason!) :bounce: :bounce: Aaaah!

Congrats Duddlebug! :)

IHarry : Yeah... that light-how-it-works link is really good. It is aimed at people who do 3d though, but it is VERY applicable really.

After all... we are all trying to become 3d renderers with our pencils. First gotta learn to model in our heads and get form and perspective right, then to understand different types of surfaces and reflections etc and light them to look realistic. Its the same whether ya use maya or a pencil. Though a pencil has fewer context menu's.

Of course realism isnt always the aim, but understanding light means that whatever style you use you can give it an 'outside midday feel or an indoors gloomy feel. Gives ya control. :)

And yeah, I guess I should get involved in the COW stuff. Still got this damn pesky Factory thing going on in the background for my mate. Oh, and I'm doing lotsa life drawing these days. We had a pregnant woman as a model last night - there was an audible ripple of excitement in the room when she came out. Wicked, believe me. I really must get some photos of my life drawing stuff online - It's all A1, so kiiinda hard to scan.

As for Lucifer not being visual enough - I'm not actually a fan of overdoing efefcts in a lot of ways, so I'm glad he was what he was. I think the way they used effects in that film was great - like just showing glimpses of the demons in the street.

As for my dragon, it's here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=458478&postcount=92)

And for the tablet chat - yeah, I'm considering giong travelling in a year or two, and if I wanna take my laptop, that'll mean getting something which will fit in my backpack. But I work so damn FAST with my Two Fist Technique :) Hell, I've even started discovering that thre's combinations of mouse and pen clicks which I didn't design for which do stuff!! I'll be sad to have to give it up :(

Budget of 3500, want dual 2.7 with 2.5 gig of ram and a nvidia geforce fx 6800 ultra/raddy 9800 pro and a 23 inch apple cinema display. Quotes have come in about 3500 so far.

Cai, Northwick Park area of Harrow is ok, quiet, and suburban. Theres a huge PArk near by, and Harrow-On-The-Hill is near by too, has some nice views over North London. Harrow in general, is ok. I used to go to school & college up there. The Centre bit with the shops and that is ok. You see I use the word 'OK' a lot. Its not an amazing place, and I doubt the housing is gonna be shitty. A house share is most likely for you, see also if your UNI can point you in the right direction for that. Trains go directly to Baker Street in like 15-20mins.

Charcoal takes much patience, as the darkness of it seems unfriendly at first. But if you use it on its side and treat it like paint - building up forms rather than tracing outlines - it's the best intermediary point between drawing and painting, and it's hella rewarding when you do something you're happy with.

I'm hungry.

Hmm - I just had a chat with a friend of mine (who used to use pencils when he went to life drawing), and he suggested going with softer pencils. Worth a shot.

Don't know why, but I love pencils too much to give them up that easily!

Thanks, though (and it's good to know that pencils are viable - I think I'm the only person there who uses them!).

I like using charcoal for life drawing but I also use pencils - ive got a couple of big fat Pilot 'Croquis' pencils that are quite nice to use. I normally use an hb for laying things out and then a 2b or 3b once im happy with the way things look.

Just wondering - has anyone tried covering an entire page with charcoal then 'drawing' with a rubber?

koshime
May 4th, 2005, 10:31 PM
how about not using the rubber at all? As far as i know, charcoal is smudgy and unforgiving like the pen due to the high graphite/coal content.
but as dirty C said, it is jsut as rewarding watching loose forms form and definately one of my favourites in landscape sketching/life drawing

Hybridstar
May 5th, 2005, 05:14 AM
I use regular and mechanical pencils if im working on more detailed or smaller sketchbook studies. If you want to be more gestural and expressive charcoal is the first choice most people make, use either vine or willow and choose a paper with a good tooth if you want to work up the drawing. Winsor and Newton make a good medium surface paper thats great but if you want to be really fancy go for a fabriano roma, that comes in various off white colors. I would personally recommend using a medium that you can taper to a good point. Charcoal/pastel pencils, conte, pure graphite pencils(no wood casing) and compressed charcoal are all great sharpened with a good knife and refined with sand paper. The reason for the long taper is that it gives you a great range of markmaking options, remember its all about flowing gestural rythmic lines and you can use the broadside to quickly establish tonal areas.Vine charcoal and charoal pencils come in various grades. One very important thing to bear in mind with compressed charcoal, conte and certain makes of charcoal pencils is that they are very unforgiving, once youve made a mark its very difficult to erase. Oh and one last option is sanguine, nice warm brown that works really well on off white paper, make sure its chalk based as opposed to oil. Bit of an essay but i hope it helps.
:D

Badger
May 5th, 2005, 06:14 AM
I'm more of a fan of compressed charcoal, it's my observational baby. Foot (http://www.gilly.org.uk/badgertracks/hugefoot.jpg) example.
@Trev, i've done it, uses up LOADS of charcoal though. i'll try finding them....
@midnight,what about a graphite stick as a middle man? they are quite cool to work in. Pencils, I usually use an 8b and 4b for laying in tones.

Oh and charcoal takes a bit of getting used too, it's a completely different media too pencil. I used to hate it.
Oil pastel anyone? now there is a beauty!
back to work...

I hear you. And I understand charcoal very much and the patience it requires. But in the end, it is not my prefered use of medium for life drawing. Thats it. Nothing else.
I think being comfortable with a medium and gaining the same result as or close to charcoal is just as rewarding. I choose not to use charcoal, or want to master it (and I dont see why I have to cos everyone else is) but i havent completely ignored it.

It comes down to what youre trying to portray or depict in a drawing. We all use different mediums and techniques to describe different things. I wouldnt say charcoal takes any more patience to master than pencil though, but maybe thats just me. What do you folks say to getting regular Uk life drawing thread up? What do y'all reckon?

Pencil requires alot more skill as you will notice more even smaller imperfections. Charcoal allows you to be a bit lazier and messier and still produce a better picture, its better for those starting out at least.

I've been messing about with a few photo refs and 4B, 5B and 6B pencils. So far, I think the 4B looks a lot better than previous attempts (F\HB\2B! What the hell was I thinking?), and I can use a 5B\6B for anything really dark.

It's interesting to have my whole normal way of working (methodical, precise) rendered utterly useless in this case. Not necessarily pleasant, but interesting...

I'll give charcoal a shot, though.

I think this is a good idea. The 'Watts' Kids have one, why not us? It'll be nice to see the variety of mediums used; styles and approaches of those in this thread. As much as I like the work done by the Watts kids, alot of it looks the same - my opinion...
BTW = just touching upon a post by CAS a few pages back - my tutor holds classes on Saturdays, from 1pm - 8pm, for £15. Most likely I'll attend, its a drop in class like the ones DC does. Interesting discussion, guess I havn't really thought this much about how much medium can change things.

Oil pastels are beautiful to doodle and be abstract with, never dared to use them with life drawing though. I will now..

What about INK!? With a brush or bamboo pen, or just slopped over the page. If your prepared to go wild, careless and get a bit messy, it can be soo much fun.Great for fine lines as well, But it can create strife with some people, maybe when you have an exact idea of what you want to create. A great starter to loosen up and have fun.

Ooh and soft pastels, good ones. Cheap ones are simply hell. Good ones, you don't even feel like your working at all, its like your on a beach, rubbing your fingers through the sand. You can get all your colours on to the page, and then work with the best tool, your hands, and then marvel as they magically blend together.

oh deer...gotta do life drawing...right now.:pump:

Have any of you selected mediums and styles that are you? that you have developed and praticed and such? Do you say to yourself before drawing "I'm going to draw in this style"??
I'm craving a bit of focus and discipline. Our figure drawing teacher is obbsessed with wild experimentation and expression. If i've learnt anything its , drawing is full of a bizillion options.

Experimenting with different mediums has helped me a load. Once you've played around a bit with everything, you can really understand exactly whats good and unique about the medium your using, and focus on it.

Love the foot :rendered:

Ah, well I belted back into town and picked up some Windsor & Newton fixative. I'll remember the cheap hair-spray thing, though

Now all I have to do is hope that the other members of the life-drawing class don't keel over from the fumes.

btw, does anyone have a particular time of day when they just can't paint for toffee? I've tried doing some stuff in the early mornings- sketching's fine, but everything else is disgustingly sub-standard (a standard which isn't overly high to begin with!). Seems late evening\night is when I work best.

Very right, and even thou it isn’t necessarily cheaper, some of that spray gel stuff works really well.

I find for things like life drawing I work better in the mornings, because it takes a lot of concentration. Usually if I stay up late scribbling I think I’m creating a masterpiece, then when I wake up in the morning, its like 'gah!?' ;)

P.S. - Hi there Midnight, where is this life drawing class of yours? You've all got me wanting to attend one now :)

@ Cai - sorry to here that dude, if I hear of anyone wishing to find a roomie, I'll let ya know...
@Cas - yup - Sam, the 3D sculpture student takes life drawing classes, and says he'd like to make it every Saturday, So those in London have a think eh?
@Harry - hehe ink is a fantastic medium for quick strokes/gestures etc, it really teaches you to be sparing with your line work, i havent used it ina awhile maybe i'll take along to my next life drawing class; oil pastels - i like em but dont use often, they also have a habit of disintegrating quite quickly on me, maybe it depends on how soft they are? - anyway, a very nice medium for life drawing, you can be blocky and focus on just the shapes within the figure and you dont have to concentrate on teeny weeny details.

@Hybridstar - As for the life drawing thread, why not we start one in a week or 2? So people can scan their work in so far? I know a few of you here have been attending regular classes; the thread could be there to help eachother with life studies, techniques and how to incorporate it into your own conceptual ideas. We can show off our own techniques and best ways of using charcoal, ink, pencil, oil etc. There are tons of different ways to approach a drawing. Understanding all techniques may help you to define your own...

They'll be running until the end of May. June's uncertain, depending on whether or not people want it to go on then. There'll definitely be a break during July\August. I'm certainly going to be there all through May, and hopefully 2-3 times a month after.

Ah, I need some help again.

Picture this: you're about to go into life drawing, where you'll have between 5 and 15 mins per pose, and you've got a full set of sketching pencils + some charcoal pencils. Your paper, sadly, isn't that great (it's actually 80 gsm inkjet printer paper, because it's cheap in bulk!).

What do you use? 4B and softer? Charcoal pencils (very expressive, also very cumbersome)?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Mid.

Hybridstar
May 9th, 2005, 05:11 AM
You really dont need to use a pencil as soft as a 4b, i use 2b as my softest and tend to work more often than not in hb. I'd try both your charcoal pencils and regular pencils, bring them to a long point so you can use a range of marks. One pencil i have found very good is a "Black Beauty", its graphite and glides really nicely over a page. What size paper are you working on? With quick poses you are really trying to hit the gesture and rhythm so go with what enables you to capture that as expressively as possible.

Midnight
May 9th, 2005, 05:29 AM
Heh - I've just been making a few more quick sketches, and I actually like the feel of a 6B for this. Problem is, everything's stylised (it has to be in the timeframe, I suppose), and I want rich, deep, smooth-ish shadows with precise edges (in 5 min? Yeah, right... still, I'll try).

The paper's A4, btw, and I'm using Derwent pencils.

I'll just keep sketching throughout the day, with 2\4\6 B pencils, and see what comes of it.

I'll keep an eye open for the BB pencils, though.

Personally, to me life drawing is about getting the maximum amount of information down in as short a time frame as possible. That's a lot easier with softer pencils than hard ones. But to be honest, I always use charcoal, by breaking of a piece about two inches long and using it on its side until its unusable. I rarely use it to create lines.

Hybridstar
May 9th, 2005, 08:36 AM
Certainly longer poses allow a different approach but when it comes down to a five minute pose the main action of the pose is contained in the gesture and defining line of movement. Hit these along with a good sense of gravity and balance and you should have captured the pose. Dirty C, are you able to stick up a few exapmles of your life drawing too?

@Hybridstar - sadly not, since I've no working scanner at the moment.

Still, I've nicely wasted this morning rapidly sketching similar poses (from my head) with HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B. HB's too light, while 8B's too rich - of the others, I'm really not sure which I prefer.

Doesn't really leave much left other than constant practice with varying softnesses. As for tomorrow evening, I'll just wait and see what the shadows on the model are like before selecting a pencil (and hopefully get some other points of view from some of the other people there!).

A lot has been happening since I last visited: births, new members and university offers (including mine). My BT connection won't let me on the site for some reason and after a four-hour phone call they just said "well that’s just bad luck" (this is posted from the library). This is the first time I've been on since COW 11 and I've been having withdrawal symptoms. Just though I'd show my face again.

As far as the mediums topic I have to use something that you can easily vary the tone and line width so charcoal or a graphite stick works for me.
I find that with pencils I use a few 4Bs that start out at different sharpness so I just swap them very quickly. If I want a more finished piece then maybe add in a bit of HB at the end to blend from the white to the 4B shading (since HB gets deeper into the tooth).

I’ve been looking at some Yoji Shinkawa stuff lately and his brushpen figures look amazing. Does anyone else use brushpens for small/mid scale life drawing? I've tried but I tend to overwork them unless I work to a strict time limit.

Molly
May 10th, 2005, 06:28 PM
Pupil - yup - I have a brush pen i got in SF. Its pretty cool, granted you got the right kinda paper. I've used it on a Bristol pad and it was the best one. Sketch book paper tends to dry it up somewhat. Also, I bought ages ago a big sumi-type brush, big fat nib made of some smooth soft animals hair, wood handle. But when wet with ink or water color paint it makes a nice small, sharp point. I so forgot i had it...Thanx for reminding me:) I think I'll use it at my next life drawing class..

Anyhoo - I have my final day at work on Friday the 13th, and plan to celebrate my departure properly. I'll be drinking at the Horniman Pub in Hayes Galleria, London Bridge. click here for map (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=533500&Y=180000&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=10000&left.x=3&left.y=99) (near Tooley Street)

Hi Noonday Underground, great to have some more talent to add to the bucket in here. I like your style of art, quite refreshing and pleasing to look at.

I have a question for anyone,

Do any of you use references for figures in your paintings? And if so where from? other art? or do you prefer to to construct your own.

Maybe I should ask this question in its own thread, but this thread is nice and homely. :teeth:

Hi All

Do any of you use references for figures in your paintings? And if so where from? Other art? Or do you prefer to to construct your own?

I'm not a good authority on this subject as my work from imagination amounts to only a handful of drawings. However I've started using my gesture drawings from life class to base fictional characters on.

To clothe the character and other reference I'll simply look on the internet for useful images. This is where a spider diagram of ideas written down can be useful so that you can better develop your image search and look in places you wouldn't have initially thought of. Plus, I work on thin/tracing paper so that I can more easily develop the character in drafts.

This is actually the way that Degas worked. He’d draw onto or transfer his life drawings on to tracing paper. Because he had a large stock of such drawings he could play around with compositions similar in the way we can using Photoshop layers; flipping the drawings horizontally and adding or removing figures until he arrived at something he liked. If he didn't like the position of a leg on a model, or he wanted to re-use the pose in the same composition but change for variety, he’d simply take another sheet of tracing paper and make a copy with a slight alteration.

One other trick he used was to draw the model in the same pose but from different angles. Then using the above technique he’d produce paintings which had a beautiful harmony just like this one here (http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/ontheline/explore/journey/france/images/degas.jpg).

You asked about using reference in art and here I am rambling on about Degas! :)
Hope you find it useful, though.

Badger
May 14th, 2005, 03:33 PM
I very rarely use reference, i have a big problem with that, at A level i did nice paintings for ages, and now reference doesn't really fit into the thought process. Which is really bad! It also means my knowledge of anatomy is so appalling, voles could do a more accurate drawing while driving a rover metro :[

The only reference i use if i do find i'm stuck is me, the wonders of digital cameras.

Thankyou for the art history cas!
Hope you had a good time Molly

Thanks for the help. Its great to here about the famous artists before us and the inventive methods they used. If i'd come up with it myself i'd feel I was cheating, but at the end of the day as long as artful emotional decisions are being made, thats whats important.
I think it was Cezanne who said
"Art which does not begin in emotion is not art"

So i'll go and grab some tracing paper
And Ahh yes and digital camera's, its sometimes easy to forget those nifty devices

So I'll go and grab some tracing paper.

Excellent. Don't forget to do the image research, though. Look through as many images as you feel is necessary and pick things which catch your attention. For example; the way fabric folds over a persons hips or the shape of a trouser leg (especially around the ankle).

Have fun!

With regards to reference, what I'm finding really useful at the moment is to do a page full of gestures from reference, and then the next day (or whenever) try to recall some of the poses and draw them from memory as best I can. It really helps to pinpoint where you're making mistakes and also to expand the range of poses you can draw without reference. I guess it works with anything really...

I use ref for figures extensively for rough sketches, etc, but not for fully rendered works.

Currently I'm wrestling with drapery (damn ancient-style super-creasy drapes!), so yes, I'm using shedloads of ref (a 'shedload' being the official designated measurement of artists reference material). I'm working to the point where I can make it look natural without ref.

now, before I arrange another meet, I want you guys to think, what you'd actually like to do? we could organise a Saturday life drawing session? at 15pound each for 7 hrs? you dont have to stay all the hours, but it can be arranged? we can discuss technique, approach etc? mediums to use, what your comfortable with, what your not? Rendering, shape, form, WHATEVER - I can get a studio space and model - all I need, is to ask at the art academy i attend...no problems...
Its all well and good asking for a meet - but I want you guys to benefit from it too. The last life drawng session we did, back in November, went down a treat. We had a fantastic model, space etc I can get that at the art academy, as long as I know WHO WILL WANT TO ATTEND.

Suggestions are more than welcome, as long as its possible and realistic...not in some gallaxy far, far away....

edit: hmm, can it be true? Does typing 'Caran D'Ache' force all UK CA'ers to suddenly flee this thread? Peculiar...

Hi everyone, hope you're all well! :teeth:

Just a quick question, I was wondering how well freelance artists do in the uk? I am looking into a few things and jut wondered what the pay was like, what the flow of work is like etc. If you don't want to discuss your pay on the forum please send me a PM and i will keep it confidential.

I remeber Molly saying she quit her job and went freelance, and whilst i only work part-time (i am at uni aswell) i am thinking of going freelance as long as it can pay as well as my part-time job. I live in the south (portsmouth).

As i am at uni, relocating isn't an option.

I am also looking into where to do my placement year in 2006/2007 and if anyone knows any good art/gaming/movie related places please give me a shout, (i can relocate for this) Thanks :teeth:

I find it good, although you have to work hard. There are alot of freelance jobs available out there, you just have to go looking and obviously have the goods to back it up. Getting yourself a good agent is one option, there are some great agencies in the uk, folio, arena etc. It depends what avenue you want to pursue, editorial, book, advertising etc. The artists and writers yearbook used to have a list of agencies and card companies.
I've been doing fine art/digital illustration freelance for a number of years now. It's only recently that ive got into concept work, and hope to secure some regular work with 2000ad coz ive always loved the comic as a kid. Good luck, you could earn a good living but you have to be professional and competative.

Hey, talking to some of those agencies may be a good idea - is a lot of the work required like "I need this today" or is most illustration work in the freelance field more like "I need this next week/month"?

And hey, for those of you who haven't heard, it's a bad day for midgets everywhere.. http://www.newturfers.com/mwf/attach/38/355838/BBCNEWSWorldLionMutilates42MidgetsinCambodianRing-Fight.htm

J2XA - I suppose freelance artists do very well in the UK. As ppl have said, find agencies, representatives etc - but dont expect getting onto their books is easy. Folio, Debut Art, Arena - they are very high end agencies. They will charge YOU for submitting work to them. Do some research into it.....
Check out work on agency websites, and see the different styles they have and if you can provide that sort of thing. Also, dont expect to get work straight away. Its very competitive, and well, illustration success depends on your style, what you can provide. You may get asked to do small silly cartoons, to vector art, to high end art. The subject matter may not be something you like, so you must be prepared for that. Clients will be difficult, and not explain themselves well; also you may have to do some things for free to get yourself noticed.

What field do you want to illustrate in? Books? Commercial magazines? Corporate Mags? Web, Bars, Clubs, Resturants etc...
I have several styles which work well with certain clients. Some like shitty cartoons, some like detailed, stiff, vector art, some dont care...

Fortunately, my ex-employers still send me illustrations to do. Its all corporate shit, but hey, its art, and pays my way. Its not regular mind you, so, there is alot of selling YOU will have to do for yourself. Get a website together, and some completed artwork, you think you could sell to 'clients'.
Make up leaflets, business cards, small portfolios to send out (some places ask for hard copies) and sell, sell, sell. I will PM you MY prices...

www.lemonade.com - this agency is based in Richmond. They demand hard copies before they consider taking you on.
www.viewcreatives.com - not a particulary place I'd rely on, BUT registration is £25, you can upload onto the site then and there - but dont expect anything staright away.
www.illustrationweb.com - they arent recruiting, or able to represent ppl atm, but have a look at their site - aaah - send them some stuff, they may be able to help you...
Go onto company websites, find the name of the marketing dept manager, creative director, send them a link to your site, introduce yourself > Go to these cmpany sites, and find out who their competitors are...
Ask your friends, local newspapers, online magazines, etc etc...
Hey - get some advice from your UNI/college, they should be able to provide you with some contacts..if not, they are crap

My fingers hurt...I best go, got an illu of a bag with expensive goods in it to draw....*sigh*

If you ever need crits/comments of any help with anything please let me know!

Thanks for the help!

I am looking to do any type of art really. I finish my uni exams next week so will be spending the summer starting a portfolio from scratch, taking my skills up a level and putting something worthwhile on my appauling excuse of a website (i only have a temp page that i done in about ten mins :[ )

I have a job lined up designing a website, might try and see if they need a new logo too and perhaps some artwork.

I am interested in anything, concept design, illustration, cartoon work. I just see it as a way to earn money whilst doing something i love to do.

I am new to freelance work so i am really hoping to be up, running and getting freelance work by september/october.

Again thanks For the help!

Hi All

Does anyone fancy doing some drawing in Shoreditch (Brick Lane) tomorrow evening? A few of us went there last week and found some good places to sit and draw - outdoors and in.

Myself and Jimmy (who hasn't posted yet) are going to be there from 6.30 till around 8.30pm.

J2XA - As far as illustration goes, my advice would be to find something you like to do, and that you think there will be a market for, and build a portfolio around that. By all means show your versatility if you're confident with different styles and subject matter, but make that secondary to showing off a clear, consistent personal style of some kind; there's no reason why you can't have several portfolios, each showcasing a distinct illustrative style. I think you'll find that agents and clients alike will respond better to illustrators who have a definite 'look' than those who do a bit of everything. You'll see this demonstrated when you browse the portfolios on agency websites.

Folio, Debut Art, Arena - they are very high end agencies. They will charge YOU for submitting work to them. That's interesting, Molly. Is that based on personal experience? I've had meetings with Arena and, to the best of my knowledge, there's no charge to the artist at any point, just a ( very competetive ) commission.

Is it possible to make an entire portfolio as well as a website in 3-4months? i have to work for about half of the time too :S

BTW - silly question, Nick, did you go to the SF workshop? I swear I saw your stuff before...or maybe you posted here? Its cool tho, i really like your characters....:)
- hehe Hey Matt. Mainly with Debut Art. At the time when I sent em an enquiry, which was a about a year and a bit ago (which I havent done since, due to being scared off and a lil inexperienced) submitting onto there catalogues was hefty.... Fortunately, my ex-employers have been doing business with them for a while,(which I wasnt aware of until recently) so I was given a direct contact to talk to. I will let folks here know an info I recieve.
I got some info on Arena (when I look back now) from a fairly unreliable source, so I apologise fellas for any incorrect info I have given. :nohope:

I will PM you fellas my costs, but please, please please, dont take them literally.
They are based on MY abilites, style, and experience. Once I get better, the pricing could go up, or whatever....

CAS - I wont be able to make this thursday sorry luv. BTW do you know who Ivan is at the Academy? I met him, and he gave me nice feedback on my life studies...

Hey! I’m signing in for the first time after a days life drawing at the Art Academy in London where I met Molly and Cas, who invited me to check out this place. There’s some terrific looking stuff around the place and I’m looking forward to exploring further, however this is me right now; somewhat knackered. Exploration must be postponed until the morning.

My website is at http://www.marknicoll.com , or at least a site will be there when I make one (it currently forwards to a livejournal art dump).

Cheers for the invite, peeps. :rendered:

Will you be starting a sketchbook thread of your own? Mine is at the end of one of the links below.

I also recommend visiting The Society of Figurative Arts (http://www.tsofa.com/forum/index.php) forum. You'll find some good life-drawing guidelines posted by Michael Mentler.

Hey Cas - yeah, I'll have to do that some time. I only have an A4 scanner and no digicam, as yet, so I wont really be able to show my life drawings but I draw on public transport all the time and scribble in meh little black sketchpad of doom regularly enough.

As with last night, further exploration must be postponed until the morning (now I’m drunk and knackered). :dead: I'll thoroughly peruse your threads then (I saw one earlier and liked your paintings).

I'll be life drawing at the AA* tomorrow** evening.

*[Eidt] this sounds wrong. Suffice to say, I wont be drawing with a carburettor.

Trev- Good luck with the show guy, hope it all goes well.

Any of you guys use a mac, ive just made the transition from pc to Dual 2.7 g5 with 3 gig of ram. I like tiger os x but it takes a bit of getting used to, any advice on books to read or what not? Im amazed at how fast this sucker is though, apllications sart up with practically no load time, and the brushes in painter are so fast, very little slowdown in large files at a high res. Wicked, now time to make the damn thing earn its keep. ;)

Hybrid - not sure that you would need to read many of the books since the help files are pretty good. Is there anything your trying to do which is giving you grief?

Most of the keyboard shortcuts are the same except instead of using ctrl just substitute the apple key. Holding ctrl while clicking with the mouse is the equivilent of a right click on a pc, apple+i brings up the propterties of a file and apple+f brings up the sytem search. Dunno if you knew all that already so apologies if you do :bashful:

Badger - Ide definetly take a comp to uni since youll find that at deadlines the studios will probably get overbooked or something elese will go wrong at the last minute the night before when the studios are closed!

It's funny, I dunno if it's cause people are just busy (it is for me) or what, but the personnel in this section is starting to shift over. I really wish I had more time to dedicate to all you guys - the life drawing/painting love-in went really well, and i'd love to do it again.
