We were talking about the possibility of a Norf/Sarf UK Thunderdome last year... well, it would appear the States is feeling feisty at the moment!
Just in case anyone is up for it...

Hehe... im up for that, though wih some warning... I need to do something for expose 3 too if I can... try get in on the action.
Alex - I like the idea and I think the compositions good, but I would play with the colour a bit... try take the colours you have used and vary the hue a little bit...and the saturation... saturate the areas the light is hitting and leave or desaturate the areas in cshadow maybe. If you look at the image as just black and white... its gorgeous. You have the value side of it really well implemented.
Also with the sky... the blue you use has no variation from top to bottom... and is very green... maybe a gradient and a shift to a more realistic purple-blue would help a lot... the sea is also the same colour. Basically I think its very little you need to do... but that little will improve a good image to be a gorgeous one.
look forward to seeing what ya do with it :) Good luck in the competition!
K
P.S. Love your architecture... you are going to have to gimme some pointers next time we meet... :)

Norrf vs. sauf would be good one day.
Just proper trekked it round London. Knackered. But the RCA seem to have some of their MA graphics, illustration, film and fashion shows on, if anyone wanted to know...
Otherwise I think I may retire to doodling and watching desperate housewives. (I swear I mention it every post, maybe I should put it in my sig)

As to meetups, we'll sort something out when our dear departed gets her arse on the plane. I want to do a big one again in maybe late Feb, and get a few more people down that we met in SF.

Thank's everyone for the crits, Illustrious Harry, thanks for pointing all those things out, I've tried fixing as much as I could like the horizon line, I know what you mean with the perspective, It's Not quite sharp enough maybe towards the horizon line. and I should have used a perspective for the coast. (I used 4 vanishing ponts in the picture for clouds mainly, and nearest tower.)
I was really trying to impliment the colour Thanks for the advice Matt and sketchling, and thanks for the paintover Matt I see what you mean with the varying of the colour, and bringing in a bit more life. I spent an hour shifting hues, and bring levels down/up, colour changing, but unfortunately I couldn't afford much more time than that to do it. And Gary Tonges work rocks. (writing my dissertation at the moment, 9 days left......erk) erk, I hope I didn't leave it to pink now. I've always been quite monochromatic, and this is a bit of a shift for me away from that, which is probably the reason for only the 4 main colours An the reason the reflection of the comet is not in, is because it would be further down than the cliff, and you wouldn't see it .

Oh, now, hey. The City project. I've realised that December was a terrible time to get the thing going, especially with the workshop at the time it was.
We have a few options:
1.Try and finish the current era off real quick and move on to the next one to get some blood into it again.
2.Just move on to the next era straight away.
3.Can the whole thing.
My feeling is that we give it a week or so and see how people are feeling about it - hopefully after meeting up at during the week, etc. Maybe by then people will have some enthusiasm for something work-like again, or just know that it ain't gonna happen.
Do people have thoughts about it now?
Molly
January 24th, 2005, 10:17 AM
Cas, the IDGA sounds cool. Is it during the day? If so, cant make it. Gotta work. Does the London Chapter have regular meets too???
Cai - well up for it. I'd love to catch up with ya all. Starbucks in Leicester Sq is fine with me.
As far as the City project goes, we should keep at it. Finish off the era we were in before Xmas, and move on to the next asap! Lets not can it. We had so many fantastic ideas. And the work done already was cool too:)
I think we should elaborate on them more.
So Weds - what time? anytime just as long as you get there???

:O Wow, what luck! I have an interview for Reading Unversity tommorow.
I figure while I'm in the South might as well spread myself about and make the most of it.
I might not be able to get from Reading in time for the meet, but I'd definetly love to go the IGDA thing. Anyone planning to go from the Starbucks meetup? or will it be more a spur of the moment thing. Oh and is Strand the station next to Leiciester Square?
As for the city project. Don't stop now!, any chance to be creative is going to be helpful. I know i've looked at, thought about, and drawn things I never would have before. In terms of design stages as well. I've got some more scribblings, which i've been holding back until I had something a little less scribbly. I'll try and post more and i'd like to push ahead with it now.

At a guess, I'd say you might be by yourself for a bit there, Cai :) I'm not sure about the game thing - what is the focus likely to be? How to program for the platform? Might be a little dry for us art types. Cas, do you have any more info on this?
Anyway, I won't be there till about 6.30, 7. I'll be in my work clothes, so look for the twat with a beard wearing a suit :)
As for the City, well, people are saying nice things about it, and hey I even talked to the Concept Art teacher from Ringling about it at the workshop, and she thought it was pretty cool, so I guess we'll resurrect it. I'd like to do a bit of an ideas session at starbucks if people are keen, just to get people back into it. And sketches are what i always wanted to see more of on there. And collaboration - so feel free to pick up someone else's idea and play with it. I realise I've done this a bit more than everyone else, but I'd really love people to feel free to do it more - it might be easy to get offended if someone changes your stuff too much, but the more used we get to the idea, the more you'll expand your thinking.
Anyway, I'm sermonising again. See you tomorrow :)

Hi All
All I know about the topic for tomorrow's IGDA event can be found here:
http://www.igda.org/london/next/
Apart from the discussions, it's also a good opportunity to get to know some developers in and around London if you're looking to get into the games industry. Because the venue is the second floor of O'Neills, the evening is already marked more for networking although I'm sure you'll hear some interesting talks. However, I'll keep posting details of events when they come up, if you can't make it tomorrow.
IllustriousHarry - I'll keep an eye out for you and your sailors jacket. I wear glasses and will be sporting a big grey snowboarding jacket, which will probably be hanging off the back of my chair. :)

cartoonfox - I think it's worth attending any gathering/workshop/conference you can, because you're likely to learn things which will make you very enthusiastic about the industry. This definitely benefits your work if you know exactly what career you're aiming for. Plus, it's also a great place to make contacts.
However, the venue is a pub so I don't know if there are going to be the usual age restrictions for entry.

yeah, was cool seeing you all again. too bad i had to leave so early... i missed my train again!!^-^
by not even a minute, i saw it leaving the the platform. wasnt my fault this time, i was on the tube, and it stoped for about 6/7 minutes, then changed to a circle line, so when i got off i had to run up, outside and down the 'other' paddington for my train.
luckily there was another at 10:45, i didnt get home till 1:30 am ^-^
anyway, woke up today with a worse sore throat, so thats why im at home. hopefully it'll be gone by tommorrow, i dont want to miss anymore painting classes.

Aw fellas last nights autopsy eeek.... After a while, I had no idea what I was looking at. Prof. Von Hagans made a complete mess of the male and female reproductive organs. Why couldnt he have just used a plastinated model? hahaha - aw man, it was cringe material....fantastic.

Hello lads (and lady... Tekura? I thought your name was Molly?)
As for the autopsy, I've not been up till late enough to watch it, though the idea reminds me of that Bodyworlds exhibition (not bad, but got a bit dull near the end). I hope they release it on DVD. Some bloody good ref material in there I imagine.
Splitting genitals ain't that bad. Snapped mine (banjo string only thankfully) only a few months ago. Not very painful, though the blood loss (think 'running tap') does make you a little queasy... :S

i just need to practice more...or maybe learn how to. Concentrated too much on drawing since the start rather than painting. now i find myself lack of colour sense, bad at picking the right colours and the way how light works.
maybe i should start painting some apple. god i hate brush
Dirty C
January 30th, 2005, 11:44 AM
That's how I started as well - it seems that most people do. Those that start with painting get more respect, but hardly ever get as good at anatomy as those who drew first.
The important thing for me in making the transition from drawing to painting was realising the differences. Drawing is about finding the borders of things - the point at which an arm meets the air on your paper. Painting is about describing the masses, where everything is a blob that needs to be refined by refining the shapes of it and the blobs around it. The way I taught myself to overcome the difference was to do life drawing in charcoal, and to start using the side of the charcoal, and lightly, building up the density with successive marks, finding the borders as you go. That way you're 'growing' the different areas into each other, not being too precious about the lines, and starting to think the way that you might if you were painting.
In other news..
Man, seriously crashing here. Played a set at a friend's rave in Elephant & Castle last night. Went really well, the natives seemed to think, but didn't sleep too well when we got home at 7, if you know what I'm sayin.
Dirty C
January 30th, 2005, 11:47 AM
Oh, the other thing is to try and finish every composition - all that stuff you hear about 'negative space' which always sounded like bullshit? It ain't, it's how you learn to paint. So in anything over like ten minutes, do your best to at least 'mass in' the environment. It might mean just hashing in a bunch of darks on one side, and lighter on the other side to accentuate the form.

Hey Bun, I find setting up a scene. Then using a limited palette to paint it in an hour. You only have time to suggest the forms and work tonally. Using A2. Well it works for me. (use clutter and cloth too)

Hey Dirty C. Been reading your tips on painting - I will definitely have them in mind when I attempt a Bruce Lee painting I'm working on.
As for meeting up, like I said, you guys are cool to check round my yard. I live in a 3 bed in Highgate/Kentish town and my flatmates are hardly ever here (ones a doctor, the other lives in a flat near his Uni for the most part).
Otherwise, that pub in Kings X weren't bad. And there's plenty decent places in Camden too.

Cheers for that Dan - might turn out to be helpful. In general, we seem to find that diogn it at smoeone's house is a good idea, as we can work digitally, and we get more done. Outings tend to be somewhat more social and involve a lot of walking around/eating/drinking.

You can take the man out of London, but you can't take London out of the man. Guildford just doesn't have the same cachet.
I'm working down here during the week, and hightailing it up to Manchester on the Friday night to see the wife and kids.
Yeah, I guess it doesn't have to be Monday. We're doing a lot of late nights at the moment, but Monday isn't usually one of them.

Please tell me you've done some paintings since september last year, Kim.
Hey, I was just thinking abuot something. Do you think that it's harder to get praise on ca these days? Like, do you think that in the last year or so, since it started rocketing in popularity, that the standard has been getting higher?
koshime
February 3rd, 2005, 09:35 AM
I dont know so much about praise.
I think constructive criticism and guide to improving ones paintings and sketchings are hard to give and meagre in recieving.
I do think the level of overall improvement in most of the artist on these boards has trippled at least. And the trend i see is a growing disparity of folk just starting out, folk with great talent and artistry, and lesser folk of skill and artistry in the midle. Like two humps and a small plateau in between.
What. ther eis a world vs USA thunderdome? when did that happen?
Molly
February 3rd, 2005, 10:38 AM
Cant do tonight either fellas, got to sort my website out, got a friend doing it for me ! yay! (and My TD too...)
As far as the quality on here, yup, a lotta people have rocketed skill wise since joining or IMO, since attending a workshop. For example, Hurricane. He's excelerated with his Painter and Pencil skills, its unbelievable. (tho, imo he has some proportional issues with his figures and foreshortening)...
Personally, you can still get praise when posting work, but its only from friends etc so you get the usual, 'you rock', 'your awesome' etc etc. To get real praise for an image you have done, well, I think it would have to be dead good etc etc to get any professional reaction.
But all these follow with a crit or two...
I dunno if I got you right on the praise thing Christian, what kinda praise you talking bout?
Molly x
Summer Pudding
February 3rd, 2005, 11:48 AM
The P word eh? Praise is all well and good, but constructive criticism is what, I imagine most people want. The trouble is, there are loads of pictures out there, with so much wrong with them, that by the time you've finished ripping it to shreds, you're essentially advising them start again from scratch. I tend not to reply to these posts, because I think my response could be more dispiriting than encouraging.
There is also malign neglect to contend with. A friend of mine who recently achieved professional status has posted some phenomenal work here and on Sijun, much of which was criminally ignored. The minute the powers that be anointed him as a 'professional' the dickless fanboys started replying. Tossers.
Anyway, back to Mr Bungle, and my sordid grief hole for a bit.

I agree with what has been said already about the praise and comments factor, ive discussed it with christian othertimes but I think its futile to protest or complain about it any further. The phenomenon of celebrity is rampant all over this site and its one of the factors that pushes me to stop posting art work on here, and go to eatpoo.com and the likes instead.
Im curious as to who that friend was, SummerP? Ive lurked sijun for a longtime (post count of one!) So im interested in who it could be.
oh and I totally agree about the progression of artists here. Although I think someone could progress quite easily if they just lurked this site and didnt post for feedback. If you just observe, follow the demos and tutorials, draw/paint/speedpaint everday on your own you can learn sooooo much.
Summer Pudding
February 3rd, 2005, 12:46 PM
PMed their name and threads started by them, to preserve their annonymity, and so you can see I'm not talking about myself. In fairness to CA, the Sijun crowd gave him a rougher deal.
Dirty C
February 3rd, 2005, 12:54 PM
Hm, I guess the P word wasn't quite what I meant. Well, maybe I did. I guess what I was really trying to say was kinda what Koshime was saying: this site turned a tiny field of a few talented individuals into an insane race for glory for a few thousand nerds just like me :)
And I think more my problem is that I tend to skip the bits which say "I love this yada yada" and see the problems in my own work about 300 times faster than the good points :)
Anyway, onwards and upwards.

It's the same logic so many in the US apply to terrorists - they don't have a reason, they don't love anybody, they haven't been treated badly, they're just EVIL. Sketchling - I prefer the first image because it gives me the impression that I'm in the environment observing the scene. Also, because there isn't a figure in the image, the enrvironment feels more important than in the second image.
Hope this helps.

sketch one is th ebetter enviroment shot but doesnt show tha tit is an abandoned factory. more like a gas forest or aquatic forest
sketch two is more an appropriate setting but would love to see the caustics and something to offset the dark tones off the foreground besides the blue hues

Both images look really good, Kim. I think the first is a more effective piece overall but the second seems a better interpretation of the topic, though possibly just because it's a little more obvious.
I agree with cas, though - the silhouetted figure in the foreground perhaps isn't necessary. I have to say that I love what you've done with the industrial features in the horizon in this one, though - it really draws you into the pic and gives a great sense of scale. Nice job!

I am in the industry as a concept designer / biz dev guy.
Basically, if you're working for a developer, expect a low salary and rough hours - especially now. If you chip your way to the top (change companies as much as possible for better pay and you'll get this quicker), your salary will improve significantly.
There are only a few developers I would wish to work at as a creative guy, as only a few developers truly respect and understand the creative process. In my opinion, they are -
Oddworld Inhabbitants (San Luis Obispo in CA)
Starbreeze Studios (Sweden)
IO (Copenhagen)
Valve (sod knows)
Epic (see above)
or somewhere small, unknown, hungry and optimistic, with very few egos poisoning the water.
Otherwise, use a big company if you don't mind being a bitch for a while and learn everything you can. It looks great on a CV before you go somewhere else and do some proper work.
My 2 pence

I could perhaps meet up on Thursday after work. However Friday and Saturday afternoon is also good.
As an aside, I asked whether the Art Academy - where I'm enrolled on a part-time painting course - would let us use their studio during the weekend. They said yes, for a small fee (no more than £12 for the whole day, but probably less).
The reason I looked into this is because I was hoping to organise my own life drawing session for Saturday/Sunday afternoons. Would anyone be interested in attending? We could perhaps draw/paint the model for a few hours and then go on to something else. The cost of the model would be split by however many people attend.

Right. How does this sound, then?
NORF vs SARF Thunderdome.
Split participants into two ( hopefully ) equal teams, based on location - you'd have to state which side you want to fight for when you step up. As the SARF will clearly be at a disadvantage, they get to choose who to face off against in the NORF.
For a change, I'd like to see us all tackling the same topic - something nice and loose, like creating a cheesy Thunderdome fighter ( maybe based on a self-portrait? ) so both sides end up with a little 'army'. What do you think? Otherwise, I guess we just set up individual topics like before...mumble...bor-ing...mumble...
Deadline in mid-March ( Monday 14th? ) so it doesn't conflict with last-minute Expose entries. Want to hold off a bit before we 'start'?
I'm happy to host finals if you like.
I suppose we should open a thread in the Challenge bit so we don't clutter this place up. ( Molly? You're the UK spokesthingy... :) )

£12.00 for the whole day? I've been looking to take up a painting/life drawing class this year, one that has longer hours and is more than 10 wks. Where is the academy btw? If you could gather some info for us all that would be great.
The Art Academy is near Southwark tube station (5 minutes walk from Waterloo). They said it'd cost no more than £12 per person (maybe less depending on the number of people) for the entire day, although this doesn't include a life model. I'll ask the life model about costs at this evenings drawing session, here at work.
If anyone knows of an alternative space, which is big enough, I don't mind organising the model. Where did you host the November drawing session, Dirty_C?
As for the North vs. South Thunderdome; is this the first UK-only event? I wouldn't mind seeing everyones previous work - any links?
Molly - btw, you did get my PM, listing drawing and painting courses in London?

I can't remember the name of the place we did the thing last time - I'll have to have a long thinks..
Ok, so self-portrait.. I like that idea as well - never really done one. Well, not a real one, they were all pisstakes. What else? Maybe we should make ourselves imaginary extras in something like LOTR.. one side could go Sauron's side, the other the Alliance races.. have to come up with a decent story for them as well? Like "I am Earinhole, tiolet cleaner of Rivendell" or somesuch..

haha - spokesthingy...
I rrrreally like the idea of making a cheesy character out of self portraits! Thats such a cool idea! We get to do SP'd AND a char concept. I prefer one subject than individual. We can help eachother out, and it would be good to see how each one of us approach it. Man, this is gonna be fun!
Once everyone has confirmed, and we have opponants we'll start a thread in the Challenge Arena saying what we're up to etc.
Finals in the 'Finished' section, and if you guys want, you could start a thread in the 'Sketches' section too. Matt, when do think we should start the UK TD???? :)
CAS - yup, I got ur PM. If we get enough people from the London area to partake in weekend life drawing do you think the academy could bring the price down from £12 per person to £5-7? I only ask this because we could either do life drawing every sunday or every 2 weeks. Also, we'd have to pay the model, so theres that to think about. If others outside of here from the academy want to join in then the more the merrier.
I'd rrreally love for this to take off asap, as I am itching to do some life drawing!!!
dirty_c, Kim, Schlo-mo, trev, Koshime, acuna, imery, Dan - and anyone else in London - wot you think???

With the imagery from those tedious movies still all over the place, I think basing our work around LOTR ( or any other established 'universe' come to that ) would limit creativity a bit. I suppose there's no reason why individual challenges couldn't have some sort of theme, but it'd be interesting to see what everyone comes up with based on a single, loose brief.
If we're all happy with it, I'd like to leave things as open-ended as possible - 'Draw yourself as a Thunderdome warrior' - or something like that. There wouldn't have to be an element of self-portrait even, as long as you're creating a character that projects your personality in some way, and the figure can be in any style; fantasy, sci-fi, Sticklebricks, origami etc.
Freestyle, baby!
edit: Molly snuck in while I was replying to you, Dirty_C. Bad manners.
Start it whenever you want, Molly. I know some will be working on their Expose stuff until the 28th of this month, but there's a lot of UK'ers who don't often post in this bit ( I see you watching us, PJM! ) who would be good to get on board, so I s'pose the sooner we get things rolling the better...

I think every other Sunday or something is a good idea. Every week really isn't workable for me, and I imagine a lot of people.Models go for about £8 - £10 an hour, by the way. How long would we be able to use the room for? As in, what times? And I'm sure Imery would be keen..
cas
February 9th, 2005, 09:22 AM
How long would we be able to use the room for?
The hours are from 10am till 5.30, at the least. I think it may be possible to stay later.
I was thinking of having a model for around 3 hours followed by anything people want to do.
If it turns out to be a little too expensive we could make it a special event run once monthly. I'd be happy to pay £15 if it meant an entire day of solid work.

Life drawing sound's good, i've been looking to do some more, not to bad to get to from here as well. I know of one other person who would definately be interested for at least a few weeks to do a painting of her's, long-term i'm not sure but I can ask some other's. Every other week sounds good.
The TD sound's good but how about giving the individual opponents the choice to decide their SP's. So we know everyone has to do SP's then between them they decide to make, beast (like CFox's coll one) 8) ), meideval, futuristic apocalyptic(sp?) battle etc
Just let's the opponents make it more interesting for themselves as well as opposed to you must do blah bla blah.............

I think the reason its a good idea for there to be one topic is that if FORCES you to apply a creative thought process to a problem... like you would do in an industry environment. I think this is a very good idea. Again, we would not do this every time... but its a bit of veriety and its a challenge! :painting:

I reckon I could be up for the Tdome, the self potrait as a character idea is really inticing. I cant see it working with one v one duels? Do we have the right numbers and skill levels, What about a group vs a group? ie the north as a group vs the south as a group, a combined effort from both sides. So each side would submit their seperate works and It would be judged from an overall standpoint.
Dirty C
February 9th, 2005, 12:13 PM
Yeah, that's really hard to judge, though, cause one great entry with six crap ones will often win over six pretty good ones. My thinking is that we say that everyone is doing a self-portrait character, and each pairing agrees on the details beyond that. Admittedly, because there's not a million of us, we seem to have one person at every skill level, and only one or two at very similar levels. Even those of us who are about the same level are good in different areas.
So how about we kick off by getting everyone who's interested to stick their hands up? Then we can get a fair idea of fair pairings. As usual, I'm attempting to hit above my weight :)

Flipping heck, Sticklebricks! I remember those Matt! You could never get the wheels to go on properly. I used to keep mine in an R2D2 model kit box.
This is so annoying, I'm supposed to be getting on with my Expose piece and all I could do last night was think about how I was going to do a self portrait/warrior thing for this Thunderdome. Aaaaargh!
You know... I see a wasteland; a wasteland where once were Southerners, living in their overpriced houses, imagining a bleak nothingness beyond Watford. Now shrivelled husks, crying bitter tears at what might have been; what might have been before the crazed artistic hordes from the North crushed them into dusty shadows of their once mighty selves...

One on one matches. Easier to judge. Southerners pick their opponents in the north.
Subject for all matches - " Yourself as a Thunderdome warrior ". Beyond that, anything goes. If you have to have boundaries, sort something out between yourself and your competitor. As long as your final image is a character of some kind displaying something of your appearance and / or personality, it's all good.

um...? er...? wha...?
Now i'm really confused.
Mr.Pudding, I thought (because Mr.Dixon said) that you (and Molly) were both southern types. And that would make the contest 'a bit silly'. Being Norf vs. Sarf and everything. But then you said you were a northern blokey. So i thought that you were back with Molly. But now you say your the Paddington Ponce. And southern again. So. You want to challenge me? But what happens to Molly? And i think she said she'd challenge me if you were Northern. But now your southern. Um. I think. Er.
Or are you just fickle? Picking your side at will? Jumping around like an elusive pimpernel?
If you're northern... then you should take on Molly, shouldn't you? If you're southern it just gets confusing.
I think i've confused everyone... sorry...

So.............
whats the subject?
...........and whats this about north Vs south?
Being a welshman im only partialy linked to each camp, south by location, north by attitude, politics and economics.
......but i live in surrey, so i guess that makes me south.
but if there arent many northerners then ill be a proto northerner for the sake of the comp.

Given that one of our best chances just went and decided he was a northerner, I think we'd prefer you stuck round :)
(and don't worry, I'm from new zealand, and you don't get much more southern)
the theme is a self portrait as a thunderdome warrior. whoever you pair up with and you can decide to specify other things, but the self portrait part is the main driver. Do feel free to think laterally, however. This is, after all, Concept Art.

Hi Andy,
Yup, we do have meetups every month or thereabouts. In geenral they've been on a Sunday, lately at my place. Though just recently they've tended to be at night. We've not got much drawing done in bars though, so I think we're looking to do another weekend meet soon. Keep watching this thread and we'll sort something out soon enough.

Hey up, just found this place (conceptart.org) and pretty impressed with all the info on here..
Not sure if this is the right place but anyone know of any life drawing round west yorkshire area - nights or saturdays ?
I have crap discipline when i get home after a hard (!) days work, i really need to be "out" to force miself to draw..
Currently doing an A Level in art part time, its ok but not enough drawing and not enough critique.

I've yet to get more info on using the studio space at the Art Academy (it's half term this week hence the delay).
However my Saturday is free so I'd be happy to meet up with everyone for some drawing/Painter.

Oh i'm working till 3 on sat and might go to bristol uni open day, but if sketches are going down i'll see what i can do, sketches where? in a pub :confident prob not that productive.

Yeah, it does look really good. Especially for those of you struggling to make the move from drawing to painting - seeing all that glorious colour is pretty motivating.
And I'm pretty sure it's at the Tate Britain. That one has probably the best exhibitions, actually. I'd be keen to go to that if anyone's keen.
