Thats right, Design is key for any artist of any pedigree be it teh yougn aspiring artist to the seasoned pro.
To start off, here is a realisitc future brief (Sir Richard Branson is already started the ball for such a venture, we'll jsut take this 10 years further into the future)
Here are some fictional ideas for a fictional brief
SilverBullet Enteprises is a large media company involved in the launch of the first commercial Terran-Mars intersolar space travel.
They have hired you and similar artist to brainstorm and conceptualise a possible trendy but lavish space vessel for this commercial venture.
The brief woudl be to promote towards the 5% of the rich to foot the super black class and the meta national corporatiosn who have an interest in future mars ventures/mining/habitation
1/ Branding
2/ Style and Future venture (lavish interiors/housing for 3 month journey/full gym and VR recreation/finest restraunt and dining in space/ and a range of exciting new hobbies to pursue
3/ Conceptualise a SAFE but stylish space vessel to be built from materials mined on the moon, and variosu rare metals from earth
4/ Design a SAFE and robust housing for the new Nuclear Fision engine run on Deuterium (D3) from space fatigue/solar dust and exposure and space junk
5/ Design a Lobby space station, and a SPACE Shipyard in georobit 200 miles from Earth orbit (Terrans newest star)
All this to pitch towards variosu Meta national and cash laden conglomerates to invest in this space venture

Hi
I think people are laying down some very nice ideas, some of which we can use later on. But really I reckon alot of us are deviating from the task at hand, and alot of us are regurgitating their own or others words.
I think that This: because first, as a group, we have to define a look for the era and a little bit of history to run with. Any other suggestions to make up the list?? is really what we should be doing. Extra stress on the word Group

yeah, koshime and sketchling I like both ideas. (and the example fictional idea of a fictional concept of a fictional nature).
I feel that there is a lot of content on these forums that help people to develop good art skills, but less is aimed at stretching the creative thinking needed for design work.
I think that a number of small project briefs like these would be great for getting people thinking in new ways, that is (again imho) at the heart of design, rendering skills are no doubt essential, but they go hand in hand with innovative thinking when it comes to design.
projects with more body than the DSG style 'one sentence brief,' but not as intensive and as demanding on my time as a full project.
I do want to make it clear though that I wasn't saying in the previous post 'don't do the city!' I think its a great idea, and I don't want to be responsible in any way for dousing the enthusiasm that is so apparent for doing it.
perhaps two briefs running side by side, every couple of weeks or so. one written for the city, and one unrelated, so that people could pick and choose which suits them best each month. and would feel happier to jump in and out of the larger project (city)
I'm sure some people would find time for both briefs.
I only suggested this as an alternative for those of us who'd like to be involved in teamwork oriented projects, but aren't so sure about making a commitment to a single longer term project.

Hello everyone!
I see your threads are all in the middle of developing a story, and I apologize for posting right in the middle of it! However, I think this is the best place for me to communicate with other creative UK people.
I'm so glad to have found a UK artist group! I'm a college art student from Fresno, CA and am about to go to the UK for 6 months on an employment exchange program through BUNAC. My plans as to where in the UK I will work are not defined yet, (I have the option of working in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, or England), and also the type of job I will get is still unknown. I do know I will be arriving in London Nov 29th of this year and will be staying there in a hostel for at least a week.
I wanted to ask the UKers for advice on what location/city and what kind of job would be a good work abroad experience? My goals for this programme are to participate in British life, have new experiences, make new friends, and do a lot of traveling. I am also an artist, (interested in doing concept art) and enjoy keeping a sketchbook and doing creative writing.
My options are pretty varied for where I can live, and what kind of job I will get, so input from you guys is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
I look forward to meeting you all when I come,
Steven Worley

Let me see how to surmise
Scotland - Edinburgh is like london except its cleaner, the people speak in an accent, road system is strange and its up north, but there is beautiful landscape and architecture
Ireland - Kinda like scotland, the people are freindly, speak a strong accent and there is beautiful scenery obe had but you best do some research prior
Wales - smaller than scotland or ireland, N wales and down the coas boast loads of castles and scenery, can be travelled by bus (slow public transport), train, own car (best) windy roads but nice adventure and sketching to be had! Loads of tourists as well bu during this time of year its almost guranteed to e 120% rainign or wet . areas of ruric interest - Betwy-y-coed, Cllandonow (spelt wrongly), Caernafon, Snowdonia, Bristol
England - From York, to Lake district to the old blighty london and its nightlife/crowd and museums. Quire a few of ys are cetralised here now, so meeting up regularly is easier. But lacks rural adventure of teh countryside and the rustic beauty of turner

Well, my idea was to give similAr typed briefs/projects of media companies, game comapnies, MA projects like RCA, Central st martins
For industrial designed type briefs (car makers, hoover makers, cool interior design, transport rail/planes, phones) they tend to have a 1-2 week brain stroming session, followed by rapid sketches, wi a once a week meeting to consider which ideas are good/or not so useful to pursue, followed by further rendering. by week 3 a few final pieces are choosen to have a full render, imaging, branding and a demo reel put up for pitching to teh customer
For MA (masters) styled briefs, a vague heading is normally given and ou have to come up wiht an innovative idea. Eg. Promoting safety through spatial awareness (eg. designing telephone booths.chairs, objects that make people mroe aware of their surroundings and hence promote a safer enviroment 9ala neighbour hood watch)
For Game styled briefs, it is pretty much along the lines of
eg. I want your team to design the architecture for a race of Lizard styled men, for a MMORPG, along with a bustling vilage, that is a cross of middle eastern influences, set in a lush forest, using non iron tools and weeapons.
Various members o the group then split up to develop character costumes, character designs, creature designs, landscape designs, housing, own layout design,etc.. They meet every 2-3 days with a final friday meeting to collect all their ideas. after 3 weeks, they have a company pitch, and variosu ideas are approved or rejected.
This is logged agaisnt a time frame. i.e artwork tasks are broken down into time assets - called art assets or units. So to make 3 charaacters and costumes, that would be 3 assets.
One assest tends to be 3-4 days to a few weeks 9they dont ahve the luxury of a few weeks) but sometimes, the right vision just doesnt appear!

Hi all,
It looks like we've got a couple of different ideas here, and they're probably not going to work together.
Koshime, my experience tells me that what you're considering is a lot of work, and it's very similar (though grander in scope) to what we originally conceived of in this thread, and it's always come under the heading 'too much too fast'.
I'd kinda like to hear the thoughts of others in the list about this. In fact, if we can sort out a slot on MSN sometime this weekend, it'd be cool if we could just see what everyone thinks.
I'm cmacnevin@hotmail.com. If anyone just wants to ping me with their thoughts, or PM me, please do.

I was thinking very small but realisticallly.
The scenarios listed out, are actual/similar briefs of the real world.
For our group we coudl try to distill such briefs into simpler more achievable terms. But without a reference to waht it is actually like, one canot aspire to promote good design over this design looks cool, i like it attitude.....

This is true. Though one of the ideas behind an evolving city is that each session places constraints on the one which follows. You can't just create a new civilisation every time.
I guess the difference is that your idea follows a 'one idea, everyone designs their own thing' idea. The city idea is one where everyone's involved on the one project, and everyone's ideas are incorporated. We can limit the majority of the work to whatever we get accomplished at a particular meeting, and push it out the door a little beyond that. Also, if the idea does flourish, it gets outside groups interested, and if it went really well, we could start a site for it. I can't see that happening with iterative design ideas, which could be handled equally well in the DSG or academy or some similar body.
I don't mean to cast such a negative light on your idea, because it's valid and would be really great. I guess the thing I like about my idea (I would, it was mind :D) is that it's different to what's going on in the rest of this board. I'd like us to create our own culture and some interest around that.

I am getting more and more confused the way this idea is going...
What I hoped most to get out of this project, was to gain some experience in the actual process of Concept Designing by building from thumbnails, choosing a suitable functioning design, and then painting a finished end piece.
If someone wants to make it in 3D and add textures etc, then so be it.
They too would have contributed to the project in their own way, and gained another piece for their portfolio...If they animate it, then all the better.
Obviously, a story with a civilisation and an actual world will help with creating the Concept designs for people, clothing, furniture, objects, vehicles, buildings environments etc...
@ Koshime - I like the ideas you have posted, obviously, they'd have to be broken down, simplified, as you have said. Maybe they can be incorporated some how to the 'City' idea?
@ DC - the 'Evolving' city thing is a cool idea, but we must take in to consideration, the time to be spent on that too, peoples commitments and keeping momentum going. IMO - I think we should start simple. It seems too ambitious to have an evolving city every 3 months...sorry dude :bashful:
We should be concentrating more on our 'IDEA' generating.
The world we would be creating for should be on a level that expands our thought process to include 'Functionality/Practicality' as well as looking cool.
I want to be able to actually work with the UK group. Swap thumbnails & ideas; re-work someone elses idea; color someone elses piece; let someone else work on my piece; chop & change, cut & paste, duck and a dive etc etc...
If I am repeating myself, I'm sorry. My soul purpose is to have a good set of thumbnail designs > a finished color piece > 3D modelled work (if someone wants.) In that order. This would show that we have actually THOUGHT about our designs.
In my Gaming group (outside of CA) we have started simple. At the moment we are creating an actual website, we are called Electric Eye Entertainment. I have been working with a Web/3D guy who took a character of mine, modelled him, and animated him. Now I have something in 3D for my portfolio, and so does he.
Here's what we'll do.
Those of you with solid ideas - write em down on paper. In detail. When we have the next meet, we will discuss it properly. I think we all need to be face to face on this. We'll work together, and come up with a project to suit us ALL.
EDIT: those of you in the Industry who can help us out, please raise your hand with a few suggestions regards to approach etc..
Kisses

I agree with Molly, We need to start simple.
Decide wat kinda city it is first, do sketches/designs then work up to finals
Trade/re work each others ideas still while keeping it simple.
Don't wanna rush into and ruin everything with to much to work around.
So ya, 1st, decide the city! then work around that blah blah blah...
Not making anymore meets in winter time.

Can it have chicks with guns and monsters?
Crane
November 21st, 2004, 10:58 AM
haha. Lowpoly, Wat kinda city would that be?
Some radical Mob Wars going on there.
I think it should be based around Halo style/theme/age
Because the concept is still believeable, since the buildings and tech doesn't differ to much from now days, apart from the upgrade in armor and watnot.
The covenant tech and weapons are a bit complex so its best to stay away from the needler and plasma stuff at the mo.
So ya, I think halo is a great reffence for the city.
Not saying copy The Halo world, but make it simple yet awesome to look at and so on.
My point of view.
Dirty C
November 21st, 2004, 01:19 PM
At some point, yes, there will need to be chicks, guns, and monsters. But starting with an idea based on an established one is a bad idea, I think, Neon. Whatever we start, it has recently felt as though the mood around here has been that we don't do enough with the ideas. And starting by giving a fully developed world as a reference point is essentially excusing us from having any ideas whatsoever. Not dissing your idea, and any thinking is good thinking right now, but I think we need to start with much more elemental thinking, whatever we do.
I have a feeling Halo will be haunting this board for the next few months.. :[

Dang, Yea i thought of that point after i posted and was like, crap.. lol
Well its gunna be pretty hard coming up with a unquie Cityscape since so many have be done, some pretty radical, some simple and believeable, some just crap.
I still think it should be a Milita based city, since alot of people here, especially kim, can come up with some pretty awesome designs in that genre.
And i wanna try out some of my ideas to, since i feel they can go somewhere lol.
But thats just my love for awesome kick ass tech.

rrrgh, hurry up and tell me to design something!!. Well I'm not going to be able to make this meet, not if any of my family want christmas presents. I don't think they'll accept drawings as presents :(.
I've got to say though I found Dirty C's idea really exciting, if it isn't possible at first , it's always worth keeping in mind for the future. It sounded like a very..organic approach to concept design, looking at roots and foundations first and creating something living.

i'm trying to brush up on "the foundations" as Scott Robertson calls em.. years of drawing..and i've never bothered to refine technique hehe. what does everyone/anyone think of my life-stuff? I've been discussing with some people about how to approach life drawing, whether you need to hold out your pencil and judge proportions that way etc. Yesterday I tried doing everything just by eye, treating what i "saw" as 2d - things didnt turn out too badly - though the guy's arms look way too short in the first image.
oh well. let me know what you think.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the CA boards.
Do any meets take place near the West Midlands? I'd like to turn up for one, but London's a little tricky to get to from Ludlow.
koshime
November 24th, 2004, 07:20 AM
As far as I know, not many folk are distributed in the west midnalnds. Nearest is manchester and darby, and one woudl appreciate the West midlands is Really massively spawled all over (having previosuly worked in Nuneaton and stoke on trent myself) with the roadworks and long transport links/M6 nightmare....
Saying that, there is no contra indication to hosting one or starting one in west midlands, but you would have to find more peeps.
Birmingham isn't too central/easy access to get to (well its strategically located, but the traffic in is equivalent to having a 10 year divorce enstrangement)
On a more serious note, perhaps you could start a West mid/Yorkshire CA group meet
As i know there are 4-5 other peeps in the regions there..(normally thoguh if you had to train it down to Lon, a 1.5 horu train ride isnt too bad. Cartoon fox does the bristol-Lon occasional trip)
Welcome to the boards...

Hi guys,
Nice to see you all last night, and apologies if I was a bit off colour. Dreadful headache etc etc.
Anyhow, I shall get right on to deciding a few more things about the potential rivers, self mutilation and eggs we were talking about for the beginnings of the City culture.
For those of you who weren't present - we decided that the city idea was a go. Essentially we realised everyone's goals were similar, just different bits of the same puzzle. So Molly's thinking about thumbnails etc can be used for development, Koshime's ideas about restriction and strict design goals can be used to impose a sense of order and direction, and the City is an idea for a framework. Evolving the city one age at a time is the framework for the different projects. And we'll have one ringleader each time. I'm kicking off, and will present as much of the background info as possible, without actually drawing it. I'll try to gather some references which I think might be helpful as well. The idea is that we then have a few ideas cooked up before the meetin on the 12th, and maybe some thumbnails or sketches. From there we can collaborate and really get things going visually.
And thank buggery for that :)

When is the San fran trip and how much does it cost just out of interest?

The ruins are cool as well. I don't suppose you've looked at the art from Warcraft have you? Your style reminds me of the concept artist that works for Blizzard. If you havn't heres the link to his gallery. http://www.sonsofthestorm.com/gallery_samwise.html

First - Hi everyone, I've have been lurking a long time on conceptart.org. It was nice to meet a few of the UK crew though Christian's mini-workshop. I'm sorry I missed the gathering the other night - didn't find out until my time was already booked up. A little bit about me : I spent 5 years at university, and 5 and a bit years in the film industry (half in pre and half in post production). At the moment I am in visual effects but want to head in the direction of preproduction so I'm working on my concept art techniques with the aim of eventually becoming a production designer for film. I did quite a bit of philosophy both at university and at design school and really yearn for a job that requires me to think conceptually.
The main reason I am posting now is because it's really good to see people getting into it a bit more in depth (and to motivate myself to do more). To me there is a big difference between "fantasy art" (which I hate) and concept art (which I love) - the difference is the concept. The best illustration skill is wasted if there is no depth to the idea.
When I think of the quintescential production designer I think Syd Mead. What he brought to the industry was not just great draughtmanship but that all important philosophy of production design. One of the most important things to remember is that film is a language - if you know how to speak it you can be eloquent and be heard. The trick is you have to have something to say. If you look at all of the most classic and influential films you see that they are all speaking to say something. I could write screeds(and will at some point) on the central message of drama - but not right now. But suffice it to say the power of film comes from directing the viewers attention using a language of symbols in order to convey a subtlety of information regarding your central theme. (this should go for games but as discussed earlier the market has somewhat more control over games than movies).
I'm really enjoying the ideas for the city. My favorite so far is Sketchlings scifi idea about the sky cities. I would like to just take you through a few of my thoughts when I read the post...
>>The other book... cities in the sky by... cant remember! will have to check. anyway, in this book, a device called a spindizzy was able to lift all matter in a radius of itself and place it outside of the effect of gravity... out of space-time, allowing incredible speeds. Also it meant that ships didnt need to be built... in fact they were not. Whole cities were flown off earth en masse to start industries the universe over... so these wandering cities flew between populated worlds and worked for money before moving off to new worlds... sometimes even discovering and populating worlds. A city does not have to stay in place... So it can pick up all sorts of people<<
-cool idea... although the device has a pretty bad name - kinda at odds with how powerful it is.
-this blows apart the whole concept of nations - which in my opinion won't last anyway.
-what kind of industry does one start when you already have a device that can move a city between universes? I think I remember a doctor who episode where there was a city that materialised to mine which brought a "golden age" to the ctiy. I think there was a corruption scandal.
-how much does it cost everytime you move an entire city? What are the economics of this? Either it's really cheap to move the city - or really precious what they get there - or they do something very important, or it's kindof a decadent cruise liner kinda deal as koshime outlined.
-economics is a lot more interesting than it looks at first. Economics is really power - what is power? Power is control of resources (the spice!). Why do animals want to control resources? Surely any animals that could move a city between universes wouldn't have to worry about that? Animals want to control resources to insure their survival - are they running from something? Economies are really a result of ownership of resources - if I own it I can sell it, make a profit and then buy more. Are resources scarce? If the city expends this huge amount of energy jumping to somewhere - what happens if there is no planet there anymore - what if the planet has been mined - will it have enough energy to get back?
-resources brings me to empires - empires are built on free energy - by that I mean easily gathered resources. Empires historically have been built by creating a huge resource imbalance by slavery - that unfair distribution of resources by imposing your ownership. So are all inhabitiants willing inhabitants? Or are they just those guys in the engine room in the basement of Fritz Lang's Metropolis? Is it difficult to change cities if you want to? It's a big universe - is there any chance of seeing friends/loved ones again if you do?... who decides where the city goes? Are there different types of cities - nation equivalents? Is civil war a danger in these cities?
-Maybe the resources they are after are very different from the ones we care about? I read a book called something like - the oppanuchi hotline(I think) - they traded technology and knowledge with aliens- are they trading with different races in diffierent universes? Is it part of some higher intellectual process? A kind of galactic project?
Anyway the above is just a brief brainstorming idea on a philosophical level - guided by the principle that once you know what your question is you know where to look to find the answer....
All of this reminds me of an idea I had for a story, which I will gladly share if it will help everyone get inspired... I think it has good scope but is achievable...
protAeon
It is far in the future - it is say 300,000 years in the future - calculations for the expansion and cooling of the universe were wrong.. Over the past 100000 years life in the universe has spread from the tiny speck that was earth and ballooned outward, amazing technologies were created. empires, wars, art, culture, decadence corruption etc etc. One theory is that the cooling has been partially caused by hyperspace engineering works where thousands of stars in a ring get artificially nova'd to create wormholes .In all that time humanity never met found an alien civilisation - they may have existed but humanity never encountered them... but in that time it became them - that is to say humanity was the seed - the first intelligent life (that they knew of) in the universe and in the intervening time through habitat, or fashion or symptom of changing mindset and thought has diversified so as to be alien in the sense that we know it... BUT the universe has cooled much faster than predicted - partly due to bad data, and partly due to the collapsing of certain star systems for hyperspace wormholes. The golden age of expansion has declined - free energy is in short supply - it is getting dark. Much of the incredible technology from that age has either broken down or requires too much energy to run as to make it impossible to use. Economies are now based on energy units. In the time in which this story takes place there is a dying race (haven't made up any names yet) they curate, or tend an enormous computer built long ago whose sole purpose was the theoretical exploration of the universe, that is as it was realised that there may not be any other life other than that which originated on earth and the continuous expansion of the universe making it impossible to explore all of it, they built a computer capable of simulating it - at least to some level in order to more easily explore it. They would instead explore a theoretical universe and once found they would know exactly where to look in the real one for non-human-decendents. There is a legend that this race found something that they have been keeping secret for thousands of years. because of the cooling of the universe the decline of all civilisations has resulted in a kind of dark age - most or all civilisations have turned inward and in this race their science of virtual exploration has become a religion and the legend of the find become a prophecy closely guarded by a ruling class of priests. Our story concerns these priests. The prophecy happened as a freak occurrence 10 000 years ago. A brief hallucinatory glimpse of a completely alien object, incomprehensible to the priest that witnessed it. Amongst them there are several sects. One group believe that the priest who witnessed it lied or at least projected his own fantasy of finding something after so long searching and finding nothing. Another believe that the object is a device - the centre of the universe a free energy device that continues to spew forth energy continuously - with which the greatness of humanity in the universe could be restored and bring them out of the dark ages of it's decline. The third - a secret society - believe it is the key to the destruction of the universe - the nihilists - they believe that the universe has run it's course and must be purified in order the rise again - ie it will cause another big bang, they will be destroyed, but the universe renewed. While fundamentally opposed no one group has enough energy to make the jump (they will have to travel for several earth year through hyperspace to get there.) And they have to decide because the universe continues to expand - the distances increase exponentially. Through the simulation the priests have been able to narrow down the location - if it exists at all - of this device. It will take almost all the remaining energy of an entire civilisation to make the journey. If nothing is found they cannot turn back, they will just have to wait out the slow darkening of the universe. So that is the setup. Our story follows the an alliance of representatives of the various sects that will be sent to search for the device - a fairly unstable alliance since each group has different reasons for wanting to find the it. They are all united though by the idea that each wants to 'save' the universe, in their own way. The story would follow them to the where the object should be... When they finally arrive they are disappointed to find there is nothing there - or at least they think. In reality they have arrived at their destination - It is an alien artefact almost as old by their calculations as the universe. It takes them some time to realise that they are inside a craft so big that they their sensors cannot detect the edges - they are in fact in the hangar of a colossal alien edifice... They eventually make it to a small "hatch"(10 000 kms wide) and enter into interior of the thing. It is at this stage that some of the explorers reveal themselves to be from the nihilist cult. The two groups split to be first to find the power source first - one to unleash it's destructive power and the other stop the nihilists from using it to begin the universe again. All of them are bemused by the enormous environment that they find themselves in and what kind of race must have lived there. There is also the problem of energy for the exploration...
Well that's as far as I've got with the story - I am not sure yet who gets there first - what happens when they use it, what happens in the process etc. I think it has great potential for design though, great potential for characters, ships, environments, technology, landscapes etc... The story I think is interesting because we will see the decrepitude of the universe - how civilisations and individuals are in a state of living death - unable to expend very much energy to do anything - so on one hand we will agree with the sect that want to universe to flourish again by using the energy for themselves - but on the other hand we will empathise with the nihilists because by starting the universe again they would essentially be creating life again. I think one way for it to end would be for the nihilists to use it and it to create a universe but - one which is on the next scale down - a microcosmos that does not destroy the present one - they cannot enter it obviously but does not create the limitless power that the other sect was expecting... that could be a nice twist.
Anyway - how many of you would be interested in working on this story? I have in mind an experiment. Since I am interested in production design and art direction- which in itself is a very specialised skill - kinda different to concept design - I was thinking I could act as the client. One which acts to unify and incorporate everybody's work in order to come up with a cohesive whole. Obviously you can tell me to sod off but there are good reasons for it - first it is a much more realistic way to work - it's the way you would probably work in the industry . Second - it raises the level of the project by making sure that peoples energies are distributed on things that they are interested in. It also makes people really think about what they are designing if they need to present it to someone to 'approve' it... (obviously there isn't any money involved, no one works for anyone but it helps as an exercise). Now I realise I am a bit late with this email - Christian you seem to have a bunch of good ideas about how it should be run. My Idea really is that there should be a central story so that we are not just doing design for design's sake - but I think that this project has a lot of scope for incorporating everybody's ideas, for example - if people are interested in designing the city which the council of priests lives in, or ancient high technology in decay or the ship that carries them on their exploration or all of their technology (including their bodies) designed for optimal energy consumption. There would be a huge amount of to design and without an overall vision it could get pretty lost, but I think if we are methodical and begin from basic principles - like coming up with a rough timeline of their history - then we can continue fleshing stuff out until we have something very complete.... The nice thing, I think about this idea is that it would make an equally good game or movie, so we can all contribute - even non-artist types with a physics/science or scriptwriting background could readily contribute, especially in the research stages.
The other thing is if everyone already has ideas about what they want to do then maybe we can shelve this for sometime in the future... the only thing I ask is that I am acknowledged with coming up with the story idea - cause I kinda like it and was planning on working on it myself sometime....
Whew Ok it's been a bloody long email - thanks everyone for reading...
Please feel free to comment, criticise, and otherwise type in my general direction...

Was the miscalculation anything to do with IBM Maths co-processors?
*kidding*
I have to say, I don't really get where all of this is going. You know, with everyone coming up with stories and idea's. It'll end up with people not being happy about the way the whole thing progresses and it'll fall apart...by the sounds of it anyway. Everyone already seems to have their own idea about it and not a lot of it seems to be coming together into one coherent bulk which could be worked from.
Concept art usually comes from a brief, whether that comes from you thinking something up to do, or from a client. Either way, the point of it is to fulfill the brief and illustrate the idea of that client. The story is the client in this case, but because there are ownership and plot technicalities already I cant see how you can seperate the 'making up of the client' from the actual 'concept art for the client'. If this is about concept art, about improving your skills in this field, then the groundwork for this plot or story needs to be something which is built upon, not constantly changed or recreated....
I'm babbling a bit, but what I'm getting at is this.....if you want to get on with it instead of just talking about it, then you should all agree on one starting point and grow it together as a group. Right now all I'm seeing is six or seven different idea's fighting it out.
I'm impartial about what idea is good or bad or the one...but you should just pick one and go with it...grow it from that seed.
just being devils ad... ;)

Yeah :) We kinda had that problem when we met up the other night... we descided that for each age, one person or if that person wants, a couple meeting together could come up with a brief for each age... set a series of events, influences or whatever that have happened to the city/place in the last 200 years or whatever. Its up to the artist to do what they can from Whatever brief the current 'client' comes up with.
The first client/taskmaster will be Christian 'Eggs' Malone... see? :uzi: :a!: :uzi2: He make club for cavemen... we draw. what would a cavemans club look like? would they allow women to join? hmmm.
Yeah, so we'll see how it works.
Hope it turns out well :)

Imery, excellent idea, though I think we've finally got all these ducks in a row for one idea just now. It's still worth exploring, but maybe you want to re-open it outside the uk thread if you want to get people involved? We discussed it at my place and I think the design challenges involved are awesome - collapsing rings of stars judt brings so many images into my head it's not even funny.

Hey guys,
Cool to see that you joined up and posted, Imery. The story is actually really good, when I was reading it I had all these ideas running through my head,a small bit of it reminded me of Asimovs' Foundation (in a good way). Im pretty sure that if you had pitched this to everyone when we first kicked the ideas off that this would have come out trumps, I think you went over everything that I (at least) was hoping for in the project. Im pretty excited about what we will do now. Im sure christian has probably done a whole lot more research and writing to add to his/our ideas which we cultivated at the meetup, It will be interesting to see how he reacts to your post and what he says!
None of you guys have critiqued or posted your thoughts on Imery's proposal, ya know you still can regardless of wether C has posted his stuff up or not..
Right now Im open to both, we havent really commited ourselves to either idea or project (maybe christian has, and I hope all this doesnt fuck him off)
and I think both have their pros and cons. Our original project being more flexible and being semi-fleshed out in our heads- and Imerys idea having the strength of a solid story backed up with Imery as a client/director. (Well thats how I see it)
-Danny
Edit: I guess my slow ass was too slow in typing this and christian got in there first.

First off - thanks everyone who made it through my email - Second - for the record it was just posted from work not written there! :)
It sounds like for the moment there is a solid plan - that's cool.
The main purpose of my post was to point out to people that without a good narrative it's very difficult to unify everything and make it cohesive... for depth - you really need depth - you can't hide that you haven't thought about it...
I don't quite know what you have in mind DC but it sounds interesting - kind of a cosmological creation myth... In fact it seems to be consistant (at least from the one sentence I have read) with the type of imagery one might experience in an halucination about a device with which to rebuild the universe... he he.
I am quite prepared to let what has been started continue... maybe later on if people what come come back it we can - or even incorporate it...
Looking forward to seeing DC's design brief...
Later,
Imery.

Wow Imery, I can't wait to see where that story leads, even if not in this project, but in say, a film down the line...
Its an epic concept, I can see alot of unanswerable questions and deap thinking around it. And the idea of the whole universe dying, tragedy on such a massive scale.
Speaking of massive scale I thought the device being unimaginably huge was a great addition as well. I can just see myself uncovering this in a comic book or something, and having to pause with astonishment, and then laugh. Can you imagine the art it would take to show that? :O
I'm a bit confused about the relevance of the 3rd branch of priests, who dismissed the artifact. Just being picky really. It shows the strength of the story, in that a plotline that jepordises the believableness raised alarm bells with me. Sorry if that came out a bit wrong. :bashful:
Well i'm inspired to write now. I'm interested in whether you came up with the setting of the universe first, or the storyline involving priests?
Where-ever that story ends up being used, I'm certain the artists will have permanent insparation and enthusiasm with it as a foundation.

BNB (tony) if you want to get a job in a creative field then your looking at office work connected to a creative field (and then working your way up by doing unpaid extra work). A trainee photo manipulator (they sometimes come up but again not often, and at the interview I went too the people there were all at the very least 20+, does that mean degree's?).
Or do what i'm doing and look at Reprographics, sign/vinyl writers, or perhaps graphics. To get anything else without a degree it's a case of who you know not what you know.
Or just look at general office stuff. And you have to be prepared to travel, ive got a couple of interviews coming up, but ones in Brentwood (Essex), and one in Tonbridge (Kent). Both akward to get too without your own transport and both the wages are pretty shite. And in the advertisements for these jobs theyve both said overtime (paid) is going to happen, although they will allow for accomodation.
Contact me on MSN for more info, or do it the easy way and get a degree.
P.S. I know im not particularly good but I can do the basics ok. Whenever ive been to interviews the main thing they've questioned me on is travelling which I beleive has been the main bug-bear. And you have to be confident, I get very nervous in interviews so just apply for jobs you probably wont get for some interview practice, or bring some work to a group meet and they can really really grill you.
I'm unsure but I think those jobs are intended for KIAD students, phone up and ask. Cant hurt.
BTW by low wage I mean around 」10-12k tops. around 」14-16k pa your looking at recent grad territory, in which case it's a no go for you.
And you will be doing all the shit no-one else can be assed with at whatever job it is, if you put every last bit of energy into that (show enthusiasm) then they will give you other stuff to do, but probably only after at least a month, and then only if you can prove yourself to have the basic required abilities to churn out a basically well done piece in Photoshop/Illustrator/Quark.
You dont really have any chance of getting more creative than that, you could try a local newspaper to see if they need help with layout/designing ad's.
Good luck!

Happy Birthday Christian!!! Good luck with the hangover. :P
I'm looking at similar decisions at the moment as well. Baisically getting any interviews for anything I can. Remeber though, often the interviewers don't know how to interview well, its quite a skill. Sometimes you will get someone who thinks its just about destroying the person infront of you or impressing the other work colleagues.
My gap year rankings are, Related art Job> Art Foundation Year > Unrelated office job through the YearInIndustry course.
I don't like my chances with the related job however, i've already tried begging the local games companies for some unpaid work experience, maybe i should just ask for their signature or something.

Rhaucan you know that an A&D foundation year is pretty much compulsory now for almost any Art&Design related degree? And an A&D foundation will be very intensive, isnt Cartoonfox doing that?
If you do decide to take a year off of studying then the year industry placement is your best bet, or temping/travelling.
Or like you said some work experience, though it will be unpaid :[

-Acuna read, I知 doing that A&D foundation, and yeah its pretty important to get onto a decent course, I知 fairly certain that with the intensive'ness of the year it'll beat the pants off my A-lvl portfolio. If everyone thinks like that then I guess its pretty much necessary to get onto a decent course.

With the city, don't worry. It's not going away, it's still evolving in my head and I'm thinking about the workflows for how the project will work.
I'm thinking that for each of the five or six requirements, we'll create teams of two or three to finish the image. Those teams can produce thumbnails and sketches, and from there will evolve it into at least one finished image, which they'll all work on. After the initial sketches and thumbs, one of them will create the initial thumbnail, which is just blobs. Essentially it's just the composition, the arrangement of elements. After that, probably restricted to twenty minutes, the next person takes charge, and evolves it. The image can then go between the people, each of whom works on the aspect they think most requires fixing at the time. But the image always has to remain consistent, so you can't just work on the face, or whatever. Because otherwise you'll get areas which are too satturated, or contrast problems.
It shouldn't require too much hardware, but each team will need a laptop and a wacom. I'm guessing most of you have wacoms, so bring 'em. I have two laptops here, and I know Koshime can bring his. Anyone else who's got em, please bring em. It'll help things immensely if we've all got something to work on.
Does that sound like a good plan to everyone? I'm trying to maximise the teamwork and the amount we can learn from each other, and also help people find a solid method they can take away.

One problem, I don't have a wacom!! and i'm not going to the meet.
and....... er........I suck in ps!!

Ok, not having a wacom shouldn't be too much of a problem. Almost everyone has one, I think. And most of the time, you won't be able to work on the image at the same time. So you can always sketch then.
The software is irrelevant. And the point is to learn, so do your best.
The teams won't be joined throughout the project. One of the main reasons for the city and the different ages is that people can drop in and out of the project. And if a different age has a different feel due to the influence of one or more temporary bods, the more the better. There's nothing exclusive about who's working on it, other than that you have to be in the uk. And the meets will be the main point of focus, cause it's easy to motivate everyone there.
Also, the teams will probably people of varying skill levels. Don't forget, you can learn from anyone. Everybody has a trick up their sleeve you're unaware of. Someone that's never drawn a thing in their life might still be able to see values better than you can, and they tend to say things like "I'm not sure what's wrong, but something in this area doesn't work" when a more experienced artist will focus on what they know about: anatomy, colour key, etc. Which can lead down a path which makes it technically better, but overall weaker. Ignorance can be a gift :)
When I've got the references sorted for you, I'll open the DSG thread and chuck em in there.
Oh, wrote this hours ago and forgot to post it :)

The highlights on the dragon need to be blended a little more, at the moment he looks like he's made of jelly. Also, the texture of the horns is far too smooth - check out some photos of goat horns. His mouth also seems to lose a lot of depth at the snout - bring this, and his jawline, out a bit.
From a purely aesthetic point of view (tricky this - it's been a while since I last actually saw a dragon!), I'd adjust his eyes to make them more reptilian, and possibly loosen his muscles a bit - they look extremely tight.
Other than that, he looks great!

Shit its hard to keep up!!! away for 5 days and I have to read for 20 mins to catch up!
Yeah, that photo is truly awful. what can I say... salmon Teriyaki just does that to a man... (!??!?!?!?!) Anyways!
Um... oh, yes, the dragon. Very cool, especially as its yer first colour in PS. Welcom to the best program ever written. (yeah yeah painter ppl... painters good but its not there YET...9 is bloody close)
Anyways, I can only offer a couple of bits of advice for ya:
1) if you want to clean up the jagged white bits that a wand-selection gives you on the edge of your scanned drawing, make a new layer and set ti to multiply... then paint over the white bits on that layer... an easy way to do it. Also works if you do all the colouring on that layer too, but it looks like you did that? dunno.
2) all colours are RGB right? well, thats a red-green-blue channel image. any pixel in the image can also be looked at as HSB colour... that is the Hue, Saturation and Brightness... Hue is the wavelength of the light, ie red-blue etc etc. Saturation is the chroma or intencity of colour and brightness is the value of the pixel without any colour. Basically im just telling you this to explain what im about to mention :)
I would try to vary the hue throughout the image a little bit. People like don seegmiller do a gradient or create a lighting setup first to get rid of the white canvas and set up a ground of varied hues and saturations so that whatever you paint on top automatically has some variation. its harder to add later. That gives your image something that keeps the eye interested... hue's that are unvaried over an image rapidly tire the eye in a very real sence... its much more work for the eye to recieve a highly saturated block of colour than a block of grey.
Also, if you vary the saturation, it breaks the image up a bit and adds a lot of realism. The contrast will also make the saturated area's stand out more.
Anyways, I need to get back to work :) The trick of desaturating dirty area's between the scales on a dinosaur is something i learned on the dino project im workin on... it really helps realism.
Yeah. not much sence made there, but dont have time to edit and clean it all up. Hope it helps! More images man. keep em coming.

Umm Im not sure about competitions, I dont frequent any real design sites. As for portfolio, the schools I applied for in New Zealand have a fairly structured list of types of images that they want for design school, and It becomes more specific according to what your major is. The portfolio that got me accepted had a pretty wide variety of stuff; I had a certain number of what they call finished peices (mostly stuff I had done throughout highschool traditional paints and pastels, some photomanips, life drawings), They asked for some personal peices too, so I included some of the more tech stuff I had done digitally. The largest part of the portfolio was something which applied only to the tech design students (transport, ID etc) and that was a developmental progress notes/pages which you had done towards one of the peices.
So I chose to use the developmental work I had done for one of the personal peices I had sent, which was various designs of a fictional city. So I pretty much scanned in pages and pages of Thumbnails and working notes I had done for this peice.
I was told that the main thing they were looking for in the portfolio was strong developmental pages, these show your design thoughts and processes, which is paramount to them.
Although in the schools I looked at, in the first year, all the design students are pretty much intermingled. So They have a sort of foundation year where you get a taste of general design, but within the core papers/classes they have more specified elective papers and classes. For example I'd be taking a core design studio class with people who are studying VCD (visual communication design, which houses all the illustrators, animators and graphic designers) at the same time, in that semester, id be doing elective papers on post industrial revolution design history with people doing transport design. And while we were doing that the Illustrators and animators would be taking Lifedrawing 1, for example.
Not much of that made sense, I just threw down all that was in my head.

Thanks for the long post Schlo but I dont think I put myself across proerly, I was just wondering if anyone had any more specific idea's on portfolio pieces, I have a fiarly good idea of what I need in gneral, ie life drawing, sketch books etc. But for the desgn pieces I feel I am now alot better than I was a year ago when I made my last one so wish to update, but was wondering if anyone had any idea's. I can roll off a list of obvious things, mobile phone etc etc but as ive got alot of time (a year almost) I may as well find good things to design.
There is a new bridge that has been built by a deisgner called Thomas Heatherwick http://www.icon-magazine.co.uk/issues/january/heatherwick.htm
There is a small foot-bridge he's designed that to lift up curls round into a cirlce/octagon shape. It's really quite amazing, he's done loads of otehr things as well from city centre spaces to handbags.
I just need some idea to spark me off and knew you were interested in the same field. I realise the best designs are some of the simplest and are for the simplest things (a bridge is relatively simple compared to a PDA for instance), and that is down to the designer but i'm just trying to braim-storm a bit wider to see if I can continue to improve/make a better portfolio.
Cheers, Reuben!

Whiteware, hah i dunno really.. My UNI has some kind of deal with Fisher and Paykel (amoung other whiteware manufacturers) where the students do internships there and look at recruitment from the UNI. But They also take submisions from the fourth year whiteware design class, if your design rocks then they build it and you get mad dollaz.
Im not sure, but whiteware was the firt thing that came to mind.. dishwashers microwaves etc. I also saw some ID students who had done faux robot designs for mitsubishi, that could be interesting for you? Handheld games consoles was other stuff I saw, thats something which Id like to do, I dunno about you.
I think this is kinda hard, for me design and art seems like such a personal thing, unless youre designing, drawing or painting from/for a brief set by someone. I find if what youre working on (in terms of subject matter) is something that you enjoy then it becomes alot easier to produce baddass work. But the only thing I know you enjoy is vehicles.. motorbikes?
acuna_read
December 2nd, 2004, 11:20 AM
Yeah my main passion lies with motorbikes and that would be great to work in one day but realistically im far from the best in the world and probably never will be so product design is alot more realistic and appeals to me in quite a different way. Motorbike design (and car design) to me revolves alot about passion, try riding a Ducati sports bike and you realise theyre pretty shite, around a race track though they will make perfect sense. It's all about passion, you can leave your brain behind alot of the tiem, then re-engage it later once youve moved on. With product design im always thinking about interaction, as all products require use by people and most likely with hands. It makes me think alot more, and it removes me to start thinking about something I might not necessarly know/experience, that's why i'm particularly interested in inclusive design and why I love Domestos bleach bottles, Heineken bottles and bus buttons.
hmmmm, a hand-held device sounds quite interesting, and there you go youve done exactly what ive needed. Youve given me an idea, ta very much.
Did you see the other day on the news they have created a hologram type device in Japan? It looked like an electronic zoe-trope thing, very interesting. I am gonna design a new type of phone/communication device and it will be based around that.
Thanks alot Dan, that was all I needed :bashful:

Hi all, thanks to Molly i've only just stumbled accross this thread. Thanks Molly. ;) She suggested that I let you guys know a little about a Figurative art school im running in Salisbury, Wiltshire(an hour or so on the train from London). It was set up originally to provide access to models on a regular basis, i am a great believer that you have to draw from life as much as humanly possible. We have just finished the first term which went well, but our advertising hasnt quite kicked in yet. There will be a site up very soon that will provide news updates, information and a gallery for students to exhibit work.
The class returns on Fri Jan 28th and will continue for an eight week term, at the end of which there will be a week long intensive course. We will also hold several exhibitions throughout the year so that students can sell any work produced in or outside the class if they so desire. The artists involved in the project are behind it 100%, it should shape up to be a great class that we just want to continue to improve and develop.Any thoughts on how to really get it going?

Bring anything you want to draw with. If you have a laptop and/or a wacom, bring 'em. This time we're going to try and start with sketches and thumbnails and get them as far as we can, while collaborating. So we'll be sharing the kit round. I have wireless access here as well, so if you've got that you can use the net as well.

in UK, although the game/film industry is strong, gettign in via a degree course tailored specifically towards this genre doesnt exist.
Traditional methods would be
1/ Industrial design background
2/ Animation/3D
3/ Fine arts/graphical dsign/illustration
4/ know the right people
to get in , is mainly word of mouth, old boys network. Saying that, nothign like motivation, hard work, talent and knowing the right folks, to get your foot into the door.
"Concept art" positions, similarly, do NOT exist here, and are rare in europe/US.
Main thign being, once a concept artist has finisihed concepting, they are considered a spare tire/useless unless they have other skills - texturing/3D skills (but cmon, you want to be hired for your texturing skills whne you want to concept in the main? *grin*) - this is true esp for games. Look at any gabe job and there will be 99% of artist jobs required. Then it woudl say - great skils at 3D max/maya required. with background history of good anaouge skills.
Concept art, is taken as a secondary role in the main.
Contrariwise,
few traditionally trained folks who had done freelancing/fine cover illustration such as the newly formed ARKVFX group (ex warhammer artist/illustrators) are very strong on the conceptual aspect of thigns first, and 3D + animation just as good. But finding such companies/job positions are rare than hen's teeth.
So in summary,
The coveted concept art job in UK is rare, it exists, moves stealthily like "solidsnake" and lasts as long as a freelance job. Keep the dream alive :)

You might be able to get onto an art degree without a foundation course if you have a degree already and good skills. Only way to find out is to ask. Computer Visualisation? You mean graphics, if so that is probably considered art/design relevant and if you have the skills then how about going onto a post grad course?
Depends where you want to study as well.
I looked at those short courses at CSM but they were ridculously expensive, I will probably learn as much from taking work to this lot and getting it critiqued. I do know someone (through work) who is studying fine art at CSM though. :bashful:

:( I have no choice but to learn. thank my parents that are paying them fees for me at CSM for short courses. Computer Visualisation I'm doing is no way near art stuff. they tricked me into it :dead: first year they taught us about graphic stuff but as soon as I get on 2nd year, it suddenly merged with maths degree and become completely maths related stuff and computer programming. I've been doing art stuff for all my life and I love it <3 I will perhaps build myself a portfoilo and then do a postgraduate degree or some sort. wish me luck

here is some pre warning, all these fine art courses - they dont get you any closer (even the post grad ones) to concept art/game art or movie art. These courses, will try to open you to exploring differnt ways to produce art.
Fine art
- make a bucket out of paper/plastic/cans
- Animate using sand
- Although you can specialise in painting if you wish but they will challeenge you with the bucket art *grin*
Industrial Design
- Product Design
- Graphic Design
- Transport Design
- Furniture Design
Good for those who wish to consolidate landscape/enviroemntal/vechile art whilst making that future hit BMW/nokia phone/coolest stereo, etc. Some of the best concept designers are ID trained - eg. Syd Mead. THis discipline brings together the basics of how and WHY you are designing project X. Not just so project X looks cool, but WHY, HOW/ COST/ RESOURCE
Architecture
- One can never build your dream house. Takes 7 years. Probably not an option. Famous architect- Frank lloyd Webb
Textiles & Sculpture
- CSM is one of the best london schools for fine art/textiles/jewerly/sculpture
Illustration
- hones traditional skills. Some of the folk here attend KIAD. but if you have the greatest skills, the best are:
Best Old fashioned Art schools are (which woudl teach you teh best of teh old school whilst you perfect yoru new school digital art)
1/ Slade School of art (Outer london)
2/ Ruskin school of art (Oxford)
3D/Animation and Transport are still picking up and not very established at various schools yet. A few North and South yorkshire based school have promising courses.
Hope that helps

For transport specific design go to Coventry.
Ive spoken to a few people (In industry, in Uni etc) and all have suggested doing ID/Product design, so dont go to Coventry and just study transport design.
The general rule of thum is dont specialise at under-grad. Lean your work towards your specialist area within a general course. That's what ive been told/picked up anyway.
KIAD is good, the equipment at Rochester is impressive compared to some of the more well known places for ID/prod design. Some good work coming out. Keep an eye on smaller but just a s good places too. Nearest to me is Ravensbourne, 3D printers are good :bashful:

Post grad - you have the RCA
but i was more stunned by the Transport 3D artwrok/design by Huddersfield - great presentation at the New Designers.
Transport design si a good way to go at Undergrad - if you have a knack for vechiles.
but if it be characters or landscapes, then jsu tpick a product design beased course, and work you way upward from there. Make sure to be as MULTI disciplined as you can in yoru first 3 years of UNI, then specialise in yoru niche thereafter.
The object is not to aim for concpet art but to seek as wide an exposure as possible that will one day serve you in good stead in what ever creative field you choose.
There is a difference between creativity and artistry.
A talented monkey can paint (or learn to render)
A creative mind may not be able to paint to save their life, but it is their ideas which they get across well or approach a problem/solution
A blend of creativity/artistry is the perfect match, that only life can provide. uni helps you to take that first step me thinks
Bun

thanks for your kind replies guys.
the reason I'm taking those short courses is that I wish to polish up my own skills and wait till my university degree (im on 2nd year now) to finish. then I will see by then, how my skill developed. I was originally thinking that if by then when I'm graduated and slightly confident in my fundamental skills in art I would probably taking on the postgraudate course otherwise, I would perhaps go for another art degree.
I know that there's never enough in learning art and I do practice very hard. I really enjoy in illustration and concept art designing. it makes me happy :bashful:
I really appreciate those suggestions and advice you guys gave me. I couldnt find other people to talk about stuff in this kind area nor people that could give me advice on this. I even feel frustrated sometimes.
thanks for that Slade art school information you gave me. It's very close to my uni and they are offering some cool courses.

Anyway! if you consider illustration, some good courses are, I believe:
Bournemouth art institute, Brighton, Bristol, Falmouth, Kingston, Bath spa is meant to be ok as well, they are the ones I know about, Falmouth and Bristol are particularly highly regarded, but it seems if your University begins with B u cant go wrong.

Pretty average course from what ive gathered. Although formal education has it's merits it comes down to you as an individual. As long as you want it enough and practice you'll get there. Look at Phil Hale, he learnt from his peers, thats why ca is so great. There is a wealth of knowledge, just keep drawing, alot!!!!!!!.

BNB - co-ordination block? Does that mean you have trouble putting pen to paper??? One foot in front of the other? Having trouble dancing?
hehe - you need to be specific....or maybe Koshime's hypnosis has worked, and you are totally incoherent and I'm talking to myself...
Kid, as far as faces go, copy them from magazines or newspapers; friends and family; your favourite super hero, celebrities, etc etc. Emotions are hard to portrait in faces but so nessacary, so maybe get yourself a mirror and pull faces infront of it, and draw. Its also a good way to start self portraits. Once you understand how YOUR face works, it gets easier to understand other peoples.
Keep at it!
Koshime, I think you should edit your post, because there are some real gulible people on the forums, and they may go under your spell once they have read it~ *goes stumbling round in unco-ordinated fashion*

If you have a camera phone, get a strong light and put it on a relatively low res, then try taking some pics and copying them, its also convenient you can do it anywhere, even in the morning after new years
On a random note: I did the matrix marathon with my friend, then went to the pub and we quickly realised we couldn't talk about anything else, all our conversations with people turned to the matrix, luckily a few pints later our conversations didn't turn to much, mostly gloop.
Hope u all had a good Christmas/new year, filled with many dvd boxsets (what was that about?)

Got the ROTK box. Me, Liz and the three people who failed to make it home on New Years Day watched the second half of it in the morning, as nobody could sleep. It seemed like the longest film ever made, and it was only half of the actual film. Mental.
Been printing loads of stuff out for SF. I haven't printed much before, and it's a bit of a trial, since everything comes out much darker than on my lappy. So I'm making loads of last minute changes, and older stuff I'm spending a few hours sprucing up. Man, this is a lot like work :S

Salut--
I'm putting together a 24 Hour Comics Day in Dijon, FRANCE.
What is a 24 Hour Comics Day, you ask? Why, simplicity itself, my dear Watson. A 24HCD is a personal challenge for an artist to make a 24-page comic book in 24 hours. It's completely non-comptetive. There no winners, no losers, no prizes, and no medals.
The challenge is hardly limited to professionals. We seek beginners and pros alike. The only goal is to express yourself as you can.
The 24HCD will be held April 23-24 all over the world, but this one is the first and only in Europe.
We're looking for artists who would like to take on this original challenge. We also need people who would like to help promote the 24HCD. How to do this? Easy: if you think it's a good idea, talk about it! Seeing as it's the first one in Europe, we could easily have tens or even a hundred artists. We've already got a several foreign artists. With word of mouth, the sky's the limit!
Dijon isn't really far from many parts of the UK, only 1h37 after you get to Paris, so distance is not an excuse!
So run, don't walk, to www.24hourcomics.com for a better explanation. After that, go to my forum (http://www.wifi-bourgogne.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11) , and sign up.
Cheers,
Kenn Sebesta

Hi Harry, you could try saving up for Prague. Should be able to do that for under a few hundred squid. I've heard interesting stories about the ladies of the night in Prague, well their not ladies of the night. They pretty much walk around in nothing apparently, rather them than me.
I think my brain is surplus to requirements really (im sure many will agree) so may ebay that for a ticket to Prague, not necessarily for the workshop though :x
BNB- put a link in your signature (the overly long one) so it's easy for people to get to your sketchbook and comment/follow.

So is Prague next year's workshop? I致e heard rumours flying about for time.
I still suggest a London meet, or something ANYTHING, I知 so lonely in rural Oxfordshire, half way up a hill.
Anyway...
Anyone watching desperate housewives...?

On a slightly more important note, is everyone good? there is a lack of posts recently I知 guess due to term/work restarting and molly and DC have flown off..
This isn't going anywhere is it?

Watching Desperate Housewives? Is that just porn? :blah:
Yep 3 of them have buggered off the rest have been eaten or just not posted, I have been working and then working out what job I want to do now as this one is shite.
I think the PRague thing was meant to be in April im not sure. There was one in Germany last year that was like the American meet but looked alot smaller. Prague cost's peanuts to get to and stay in and drink's cost hardly anything (even on minimum wage it's cheap, is the anger showing through? :needle: ). I'm guessing it's more intimate and you get more involved at a smaller meet, not sure.
I'm good apart from the work, thank's :teeth:

Hey Cas. Good to see you rocked up. I myself have a vicious flu and am not in good shape at all.
SF workshop was incredible. Made me realise I'm closer to my goals than I thought, and got some really great feedback, including a possible matte painting thing in Soho.
Prague, if it ever happens, should be in September, they're saying. So don't stress about it just yet.

Cool painting alex.
Really love the details and mood. Just one tiny tiny detail, i wonder if the horizon line looks a bit strange , in the sense the cloud appears to coninue below teh orizon where teh sea shoudl be. Either due to the same blue tones used, or the placing of the horizon line.

I'm sure you don't need me to say its excellent (which it is!) but since you asked for heartless crits i'll try and search for some.
I'm not sure how close you are to finishing so its hard to say as well. But its not quickly obvious what the story is, maybe its not supposed to be. It took me a while to realise the small figures were people, either my eyes wernt drawn to them or they are quite similar to the enviroment.
The sea looks a little flat, perhaps adding a few shadows/ dark patches or ripple lines. And the picture presents a few problems for the geography in my mind.
On the right the picture ends with a flat plain above sea height, but its not clear that there is a cliff, hmmm perhaps thats how its supposed to be since its science fiction.
The distance line is quite blurred, i understand that is because of the brightness, but I would love to see a little suggestion of what could be over there, just to tease my imagination.
A small thing, the second meteorite line could be straighter, at the moment it throws the sense of speed of both of the impacting objects. A slightly wiggly trail makes me think of a slow plane. Then again, theres no such thing as a slow plane in the air so maybe again I am wrong.
UGh, typing all that felt horrible, Its largly incredible and those epic clouds are like an explosion in my brain.
I Can't wait to see it up in the collection of entries.

Just joining in.
Alex K:- Bruce Pennington springs to mind. It's very pink. I was told recently by someone who should Know that "pink does not sell". I have been reaserching myself and they may be right. Very few pink pictures arround.
I've been an online artist for over a month now and would love to join in more things. Planning to launch carear soon (just gotta do the dishes first).
Does any one know how you'd go about getting a cover for Heavy Metal?

Bournemouth's lovely in the summer.

Rob - Heavy Metal's submissions guidelines can be found here (http://www.metaltv.com/page.cfm?id=352). I'm sure you know the kind of subject matter they like, and the sort of quality they're used to. Leave the dishes to soak. ;)
Alex - Looking good! Very reminiscent of Gary Tonge's (http://www.visionafar.com) work. It certainly has an epic feel though as Kim says, there may be some slight perspective issues approaching the horizon. The thing that stood out to me when I first opened the image was the limited palette - the colour choices are nice, but the whole pic seems to use only four colours; black, white, blue and orange. This may be intentional, but I think the pic would be more interesting to look at and have more depth if you vary these up a bit, maybe shifting some subtle greens into the sky, some more saturated tones into the clouds, and possibly warming the highlights up a little, using pale a yellow rather than white. I hope you won't object to a crap paint over to try and illustrate what I'm getting at in place of my slippery grip on the English language - pic (http://www.vortex.plus.com/Tower-Sketchprogress15_adjusted.jpg). While I was in there, I also added an ( incorrect ) reflection of the comet (?) to the sea to try and firm up the composition a bit; you have a lot of strong horizontal and vertical elements in your pic ( horizon line and buildings ) so a few tangents like this might help to break things up a bit.
